Nine Favorite Things.
Thanks for joining me for another Nine Favorite Things post.
Hey, hi, and Happy Sunday! Tuesday marks the official start of autumn, but around here we’re already deep into autumn days. As you can see from the photo above, our trees are all starting to turn vibrant shades of yellow and orange. Walking outside or simply looking out the window is the absolute prettiest site and always brings a smile to my face. I’m amazed every single year by these colors and so grateful I get to take them in daily. I only wish this time could last longer. In only a couple of short weeks, those pretty leaves will have fallen and the color will be lost for the season. So while the color is still here, I’m going to talk your ears off about all the prettiness!
With Tuesday being the first day of fall, I’ve finally been thinking about those pumpkin recipes. Should I share a new one this week or wait until October? I’m feeling like it just might be time for pumpkin? I guess I’m ready…
And on that note, I’m thinking and brainstorming fall cocktails. Is this something you guys would be excited to see return to HBH this season. For the past few years, I’ve started back up with Cocktail Saturdays around this time and carried the series on through December. Should I continue? I LOVE these posts and have so much fun with them, but want to hear what you guys think? Harry Potter drinks for Halloween? Let me know!
Anyway, how’s it going? This week was another busy, but good week. We all had so much fun at my cousin’s wedding this past weekend back in Cleveland, but I have to say, the travel made me miss traveling for work. I’m so sad I’m not headed to NYC this fall. Being in the city during the autumn days is my favorite. This time last year we were gearing up for the release of the HBH Super Simple cookbook and planning multiple trips to NYC for press and events.
I have only one trip on the calendar, to LA in November, but other than that, nothing else is planned. Laying very low this fall, so it’s going to be a little different. But I’m also feeling excited to have more time at home.
Which…is really inspiring me to add touches of fall all around the house. I love decorating for the seasons but am never able to find the time. This year I’m making it a goal to decorate for fall and Halloween. I’ve already been shopping around on Terrain and Pottery Barn (see my picks below). Please let me know any stores you love to shop for fall decor? But, what I’m looking for the most? Shockingly, a new candle. I’ve tried so many candles that I absolutely love, but I’ve yet to find a clean fall candle with warm autumn scents like cinnamon.
Questions: What’s your favorite fall scented candle? How about your favorite places to shop for autumn decor?
Coming up this week on HBH, we’ll be kicking the week off with a warming, but healthy, chicken dinner. Then moving on to share something warming and sweet on Tuesday. On Wednesday we’ll have a fun recipe that’s great for Sunday snacking. For Thursday we’ve got a simple vegetarian dinner. And we’ll be wrapping the week up on Friday with yet another fall dessert….which are clearly my favorites!
If you’re catching up on blog posts from the week, be sure to sign up for our daily newsletters. They’ll help you to stay up to date with everything that’s happening here, as well as fun content you’ll only get via email. If you’re meal planning today, don’t forget to check out my menu below (it’s # 9 on the favorite’s list). You can grab the full grocery list for this week’s menu in our special Sunday newsletter.
1. Everything I want to decorate, wear, and do this fall…
1. Find an apple orchid nearby and pick all the apples. Then, bake these apple blondies.
2. Actually decorate for fall…with autumn flowers (and so many mums), pumpkins, cute wreaths, and my favorite candle (it’s a splurge, but Chai scented and perfection).
2. Bake my favorite pumpkin bread with cinnamon maple butter.
3. Watch all the best Halloween movies…Hocus Pocus, Halloweentown, and do a Harry Potter marathon with Asher. What’s your favorite Halloween movie?
4. Go to a pumpkin patch and pick out all my favorite odd-looking pumpkins. Then do some carving and roast their seeds…yumm. Here’s a list of 40 of the best pumpkin farms.
5. Homemade apple cider, apple butter, and apple cider doughnuts (above photo)…again and again. And let’s throw in some pumpkin butter too.
6. Send fall care packages to friends. Love these ideas…filling mine with lots of cookies too.
7. Sunday morning pumpkin pancakes while watching 31 nights of Halloween. I used to watch The Scariest Places on Earth when I was younger on Saturday afternoons while sitting by our fire enjoying dad’s chocolate chip pancakes. Best memory.
8. Go for a hike and take in all the fall foliage. Our trees are so pretty right now.
9. Mixing up spooky Harry Potter cocktails.
10. Fall shopping! I’m in need of new fall sweaters and a cozy coat. Loving this sweater and this wool coat…and this trench too.
12. And on that note, splurge on a new pair of fall boots. Or these (real big splurge).
13. Watch reruns of all the autumn Gilmore Girls episodes. Stars Hallow in the fall was my dream place.
Questions: What’s on your list for fall. What’s the one thing you want to do most? For me, I really want to find a fun pumpkin patch in Colorado. I’ve never been to one here!
2. Favorite Autumn Cocktails.
3. Leanne Ford’s Crate and Barrel fall collection…
Love so many of these pieces.
4. favorite question of the week…
q: Do you prefer remote living to the big city life? Does it affect your creativity?
a: Yes! I’m very small town. It works for me. I love to travel to NYC and LA but I love coming home to my small town. I love the space, all the trees, and the openness. But as I said I love being able to work in the city some too. Missing my fall trips to NYC so much this year!
5. latest recipe videos.

Finally, check out all the past Nine Favorite Things posts here.
Thanks for another great Sunday post! I love autumn and its atmosphere, I love apples and cinnamon and cosy dishes but I frankly get tired off all the pumpkin recipes at this time of the year (am I the only one?) Pumpkin has no special taste to me and having it pop up in every single sweet or savoury recipe makes me scream. So please, if you could add some non-pumpkin recipes this month I’d be thankful! Now I can also browse through all your other wonderful recipes and keep quiet until you all get tired of pumpkin too🙂.
I love the honesty! Thank you so much for this, I will try to get some recipes in there for you!! xTieghan
Fall is my favorite season and I just love everything I just read in your email from the fall decorating tips to the sage brioche rolls recipe! I wanted to give a shout out to my favorite candle company, Libellulecandle,. You can find them on instagram. I’m awaiting my favorite candle delivery, Pumpkin Praline Pie! They are a small company in my area and their candles are the best!!!! Clean burning and the scent is divine!!
I will look into them! Thank you so much for sharing, Fran! xTieghan
Not ready for pumpkin recipes until November. Then I only make pumpkin bread for our oldest son. I am not too fond of pumpkin except in bread or cookies. I really dislike it in pie. I do love sweet potato pie though. HA!! I also love sweet potato souffle, candied yams, baked sweet potatoes, etc.
I would rather just have life stories or food related recipes instead of the drinks.
Ooo yes! Thank you so much Charlotte!! xTieghan
Have you ever thought about making your own candles? You can use soy wax, which burns clean & cleans up with soap & water, & use a fragrance oil made for use with candles. Not hard to do, not very expensive, & fun to find the smells you love. With your creative talent you could fill your home with candles!
I have thought about it, but never acted on it haha! I will look into it for sure! Thank you Jean! xTieghan
Always my favorite post! I vote ‘yes” — bring out the pumpkins. It’s officially Fall and such a short season. Let’s enjoy the heck out of those pumpkins while it feels so seasonal and good.
Thank you so much Jenn! xTieghan
I loved watching The Home Edit! I hope they do more episodes! Also i would love some more soup recipes from you. They are always so good! Happy Fall Tieghan!
Yes! Thank you Kristen!! I am really glad this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
Loving HBH and shared with my girlfriends at home. I’ve enjoyed cooking the recipes with my adult university attending living at home daughters. I really enjoy my Sunday mornings reading the Nine Favorite Things. I live in Northern Alberta in Canada 🇨🇦 and am loving the focus of local and seasonal cooking. None of the recipes are boring nor overly complicated.
I love that either my girlfriends or I will try at least a few of the recipes each week. I’m baking the Broccoli orzo tonight with roast chicken with broccoli I get from my local organic farm. Yum I can’t wait.
Ooo that sounds amazing! I am really glad you have been enjoying my recipes! Thank you Christina! xTieghan
Another wonderful Nine Favorite Things, T. Your photography for those Harry Potter cocktails is absolutely gorgeous. You must have had a lot of fun setting them up. Like lighting the thyme on fire in the The Deathly Hallows Cocktail? Brilliant! I have to say the Golden Snitch cocktail is calling my name, but I’m a sucker for elderflower. I wonder if you could cook with the liquor and make something divine? My favorite Halloween movie is Practical Magic. Happy Autumn!
Thank you so much Heather!! I am so happy you are loving these cocktails! Happy Autumn to you as well! xTieghan
YESS ON THE COCKTAILS!!!
Thank you Keisha! xTieghan
Always love your style…always click the links for your outfit choices…and dream….
The picture of the doughnuts….sigh…I thought for sure I smelled them….I love doughnuts:-)
I’ll be making the apple butter blondies this week!
Thanks so much for your positive mood….
Thank you Mary Ellen! I am so happy you have been loving these posts! Is there anything you would want to see differently? I hope you are having a great week! xTieghan
Oh my god!! The pictures of those cocktails!!! The detail and care that went into not only the creation of the cocktail but the photos!! I want to try them all!!!
And those applet blondies!!! YUM!
Thank you so much Brittany!! I hope you try some and love them! xTieghan
Fall is the BEST season, hands down. As for your question about #5, I never watch or look at the videos so I would love more/different content for #5 instead!
Thank you Jacqueline!! xTieghan
Please do Harry Potter cocktails, they’re one of my favorite things to see on HBH! So far I’ve made the Golden Snitch and the Hermione Granger, and I want to make all of them!
Thank you so much Ellie!! xTieghan
I have gone to Trader Joe’s two weekends in a row to stock up on all the autumn products. Bring on the pumpkin recipes, it’s not to soon!
Haha love that!! Thank you Amy! xTieghan
I love all your drinks…would you PLEASE give some mocktail recipes too for us pregnant ladies?! It would be amazing. It’s so hard to find good non-alcoholic drink ideas. Thank you for considering!!
Yes, I would totally love to! Thank you Katherine! xTieghan
My favorite fall candle is Rustic Pumpkin from Illume
https://www.illumecandles.com/Gilded-Ceramic-159/?SelectedSKU=45491005000
All Illume candles are glorious! After pumpkin, I do their Balsam Fir – love love!!! Beautiful vessels and wonderful scents.
Thank you so much Genevieve! xTieghan
The cocktails are some of my favorite posts. I would love them back ASAP!!!
Thank you Elizabeth! xTieghan
HI T! Thanks for such a great post ! I really loved those Cinnamon Spiced Apple Fritters with Vanilla Coffee Glaze. They were the BEST EVER!!!!! I would like to see more recipes like that! Anything with : nutmeg ,apples, cinnamon, apple butter,, pumpkin butter, and anything vanilla-ish. Oh, muffins!!!!! I would love to see more fall muffin recipes. Thanks!
Aw I am so happy to hear that, Clare! Thank you! xTieghan
You inspire me with your recipes, enthusiasm, and magnificent photography! I am a Colorado girl too! We were just in Cleveland last week as well. Our daughter just had a baby boy that we had to meet! So cute! It was nice to get away from all the smoke. We are living in Windsor in a tiny apartment while we wait for our dream home to be completed in mid-October There is the sweetest store in Windsor called Rod Works. It is filled with beautiful things and unique holiday items. Truth be told, I find it irresistible. You can look it up online at http://www.rodworks.com. Have a wonderful, crisp autumn week!
Aw that is so sweet! I am so happy you have been loving my recipes, Cindy! Thank you and I hope you continue to! I will look into that shop too! xTieghan
Always up for anything Harry Potter themed!
Yes!! Thank you Sean! xTieghan
Love your roundups! I just bought the Capri Blue Spiced Cider candle and it’s amazing- spicy/cinnamony/apple scented and not too sweet. I’m not a fan of gourmand scents, so this is perfect! I love seeing your candle recs! I tried the Trader Joe’s haunted house kit, and it was a bit of a failure. Like many cheap cookie kits, the pieces didn’t really align, so we couldn’t actually build the house. My toddler loved decorating it anyway, but it was just in pieces! Trader Joe’s has some amazing fall items though.
Thank you so much for letting me know, Hilary!! I am really glad you are enjoying my candle recommendations, fall is the best! xTieghan
I’ve missed the Saturday cocktail posts! Yes please bring that back!
Thank you Jaclyn! xTieghan
Yes to cocktails and YES to Harry Potter drinks!!! I’m so ready for fall and for me that means bring on all of the fall foods. We absolutely love pumpkin and there’s no such thing as too much so I am excited to see what you share with all of us. We love hearty chunky soups and stews and meals that cook all day and make our home smell amazing. Your photograph is breathtaking. Thank you for all of the work you put into your blog, your recipes and my weekly favorite Nine Favorite Things.
Ok so happy to hear this!! Thank you Marla! xTieghan
Thank you for taking the time to put these beautiful segments together. Happy Fall.
Thank you Raynette! Happy Fall! xTieghan
Really excited to make the apple butter blondies this evening to enjoy after slow cooker french wine and mustard chicken (which is already smelling amazing). Your recipes inspire me in the kitchen and make me so excited to cook. I might even whip up an apple butter old fashioned with my leftover apple butter 😈
Sounds like an amazing evening! Thank you so much for trying this Alicia! xTieghan
I look forward to your Saturday Cocktail posts every year! And yes to more Harry Potter cocktails, those are my favorites! I especially love your Half Blood Prince & Deathly Hallows cocktail recipes. Excited to try out the Hermione Granger cocktail this Fall while watching the HP movies! I am always up for more pumpkin recipes, too. 🙂
Thank you so much Johanna! I am so glad you are as excited for those as I am! xTieghan
We camped outside Silverthorne this weekend and it was so beautiful! The trees are pretty much perfect today. I’ve gotten good pumpkins at Chatfield and Anderson farms (though I worry a bit that the snow last week may have impacted the patches!). Have a great day!
Ooo thank you for letting me know, Anne! I hope you have an amazing week! xTieghan
One of my besties raves about your recepies and your food photography. started following you and everything is so gorgeous I want to make it all. I love perusing the blog it’s so good and beautiful and lots of great recs. So glad I checked you out.
Aw I am so happy you both have been enjoying my blog and recipes, Tricia! Thank you!! xTieghan
YESSSSS PUMPKIN NOW!!! It’s fall in my heart on 9/1 every year!!!
As for candles, I’ve been enjoying candle making kits from a local shop (but she ships!!) and she has amazing fall kits available now! She has a “cozy” kit as well as a “fall” kit. I’ve done the “calm” one and made a lavender herbal and woodsy blend I can’t get enough of! Totally recommend!!!
Also wanted to let you know we made your recent tomato soup recipe and loved it! It was also so easy which I really appreciate.
Ooo that sounds amazing! Would you share her shop? I would love to check it out! Thank you Cassie! xTieghan
oh my gosh, I totally left off the link for the amazing fall candle making kit you must try!
I can’t recommend it enough- my 13 yr old and I had a blast with it, so I bet Asher would love it, too!

Check out the.Heirloomedcollection.com website for their Heritage candle.
Thank you Lissa! xTieghan
My favorite Halloween movie is Practical Magic. I just want to live in that house and have their lives. Maybe when I retire I’ll buy an old Haunted House on a beach somewhere!
Ooo I think that would be a bit much for me, but sounds pretty cool! Thank you Rachel! xTieghan
Tieghan..this is my most favourite time year! I love Fall cooking and baking and cooler temps. This is “comfort food” season. (And this is definitely the year for comfort food!) So, whatever you are serving up is fine with me. Pumpkin recipes? Is there really any taste to pumpkin without pumpkin spices? No, but the spices are really what Fall is all about, right? So, bring on all your pumpkin, apple, and pear recipes! The drink recipes never interest me at all, but whatever. It’s your blog and you can’t please us all anyways. I love your Sunday posts as well. Just keep doing what you’re doing. 😘
Thank you so much Colleen!! I am so happy you love Fall as much as I do! xTieghan
Two of these recipes and a cocktail are on the menu for this week! Thanks for the inspiration, you never disappoint!
Yes! I hope you love them, Lonnie! Thank you so much! xTieghan
I decorate for Fall starting September 1, a Halloween overlay is added October 1, replaced by a Thanksgiving overlay Nov. 1. Then it all comes down the day after thanksgiving to make way for Christmas. Go to fall/ Halloween decor stores, in addition to some local to me boutiques, are Grandin Road’s Halloween Haven (The best especially for outdoors!), Pottery Barn and PB Kids, and Michaels.
Thank you so much Amanda! xTieghan
For candles you might want to check out Antique Candle Co….Their candle scents are OMG amazing. Honest!!
Thank you so much Gram! xTieghan
I love that you are ready to jump into Fall too! I wish Saturday cocktails were a year around thing, so yes please start them back up and any Harry Potter cocktails would be much appreciated 🙂 I’m making the Death Eater Negroni tomorrow! Thanks for sharing your yummy recipes with us!
Thank you so much Sierra! I hope you love the Death Eater Negroni!! xTieghan
So on board with alllll of the Harry Potter themed everything! Would love a classic British beef pie recipe!
Thank you Hayley! xTieghan
I have the sheet pan sesame ginger chicken in my dinner menu this week! I can’t wait to try it. Both of my boys love Brussels Sprouts and just happened to buy them this week.
Thank you so much Elissa!! I hope you love the sesame ginger chicken!! xTieghan
I’m loving all the wonderful cocktail recipes! The wonderful pictures you take of the cocktail recipes are just gorgeous and would make for a fantastic book and that I would buy in a heart beat. Bring on those pumpkin recipes I’ll take them but more importantly I’ll take anyone of your recipes because they all come out so delicious and yummy!!
Haha that is so amazing! Thank you so much for trying this recipe, Mel! I am really glad this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
You should totally watch The Blair Witch Project! It is a classic and probably the best in the “found footage” category. I remember as a kid seeing all the previews for it and how they made it look like it was real, very good marketing.
Thank you Brie! I will look into it! xTieghan
Maybe it’s the association of pumpkins with Halloween but I just can’t get into anything pumpkin related until October! Love the care packages you shared! Do you have tips for mailing cookies? Would love to send some this fall!
Hey Christy,
Check out my holiday cookie box post. I share all of my tips and tricks and great cookies for shipping that can easily be decorated for Halloween!
https://dev.halfbakedharvest.com/2019-holiday-cookie-box/
Please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
Do you make your pumpkin purée yourself? I cannot find canned one here in France and I haven’t been able to find one that is easy (and not savory)… Any tips? I love all your recipes and I would love to be able to make the pumpkin ones !
Hey Jeanne,
I get my pumpkin puree from the grocery store! Are you able to find pumpkin pie filling? It depends on the recipe but you might be able to use that and reduce sugar. Please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
To jeanne@theustsache: you can find pumpkin (potiron en cubes) at Picard Surgelés. Cook the pumpkin and purée it in a blender. The quality and consistency is great for pumpkin recipes.
I’m ready for pumpkin by August! Fall is my favorite season and it always feels too short compared to summer. PLEASE continue your Cocktail Saturday series! I love the cocktails you create and would love another harry potter one for Halloween.
Thank you so much Lisa! I am so happy you are excited for the cocktails! xTieghan
