Homemade Slow Cooker Maple Apple Butter.
Sharing my favorite homemade slow cooker maple apple butter recipe today, since you guys have been asking for it all month long.

As a lot of you have noticed, I’ve been using a ton of apple butter this September, see this honey, apple, cheddar, and bacon panini, this brussels sprout mushroom pizza, this honeycrisp apple old fashioned, and this pastry wrapped baked brie with maple roasted apples. To my surprise, many of you are actually unfamiliar with apple butter. If that happens to be you, apple butter is basically just apple sauce, but thicker and spiced with warm autumn spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. It’s sweet, smooth, and possibly one of the most delicious spreads to put on toast throughout the fall season.
I’ll usually buy apple butter from the store, but on my fall bucket list this year I had written down “make homemade apple butter”. I was so excited that I actually checked the item off my list within the second week of September! I mean, this is amazing because my fall bucket list is huge, and I’ll often make a bucket list and never check anything off!
Anyway, I guess my point is that I was very excited to finally make some homemade apple butter. I’m also extremely excited, not only in how delicious it turned out, but how easy was to make!

If you have been following along on the blog for a year or more, than you know, come fall, I love to break out my slow cooker. Something about slow cooking a recipe all day long, just screams out to me during the fall months.
This apple butter is the perfect recipe to make on a crisp Sunday morning. Then maybe go out for a mid-day hike or bike ride and when you come back in the house will smell all cozy and delicious. then just spend an hour or two curled up on the couch and taking in the smell of apples cooking with cider, maple syrup, cinnamon, and nutmeg…nothing short of amazing. Honestly, I would make this apple butter recipe simply for the smell it gives off. It’s like your favorite fall candles, but so much better.
Of course, unlike a candle, you get to eat this at the end of cooking, which is obviously much more ideal than just blowing something out, you know?

OKAY, so here’s how this recipe works. Chop up your apples (I love using Honeycrisp) and add them to your slow cooker along with, apple cider, maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Cover and cook on low and slow all day long (or at least that’s how I prefer to do it). Then remove the sauce, puree in a blender and place back in the slow cooker for another hour or so. This will help thicken the sauce into more of a “butter”.
There’s almost zero work involved in the recipe and the end result is just so delicious. So far, I’ve used this apple butter in four recipes and it has taken them from good to incredible. AND I love that the only added sugar I used in the recipe is maple syrup. Meaning, this totally is totally acceptable to call healthy. Cool. Cool.
I have truly been using this apple butter almost daily. It is delicious in so many recipes (try it with pork chops!) or just spread it over a piece of toasted bread.
Plus, it’s the perfect way to use up all the fall apples you went and picked over the weekend…or that I hope you picked!

And you guys! Speaking of the weekend! I have so many fun details to share about the Half Baked Harvest Cookbook retreat. Would you like a full post on the retreat? I don’t have too many photos, but I have so much to say! Maybe I will share the details in my favorite’s post this Sunday!
Just to quickly recap though, the retreat went so amazingly well and was so much fun! Fortunately, the dinner on Saturday night went great. I worked with Crate and Barrel on the tables, and Kroger on the dinner. The tables turned out so cute that I might just need to recreate them and snap some better photos. I always LOVE the tablescapes I am able to create with Crate and Barrel product. The actual meal thankfully turned out great…thank you to Kroger for all my delicious produce…oh, and the ice cream social we did together was so delish.
Sunday morning was brunch with my friends at Land O’Lakes, and it could not have been more delicious. All of their special butters take recipes to another level…their pumpkin spice butter is just too good.
I will go into more detail on Sunday, so stay tuned for that!
In the meantime, how about we all make some apple butter and then this apple cheddar Panini and this cocktail?!

Cuisine: American
Keyword: homemade butter, slow cooker recipe
Apple butter is basically just apple sauce, but thicker and spiced with warm autumn spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. It's sweet, smooth, and possibly one of the most delicious spreads to put on toast during the fall season.
Ingredients
- 4 pounds Honeycrisp apples, cored and diced
- 1 1/4 cups apple cider
- 1/2 cup real maple syrup
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon or 1-2 cinnamon sticks
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
- 1 pinch ground cloves (about 1/4 teaspoon)
- 1 pinch sea salt or kosher salt
Instructions
Slow Cooker
-
1. In the bowl of your slow cooker, combine the apples, apple cider, maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt. Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours or on high for 4-5 hours, stirring halfway through cooking.
2. Remove the cinnamon stick and then transfer the apples to a blender and puree until smooth. Return to the crockpot and cook, uncovered on high for 1-2 hours or until slightly thickened. Taste and adjust sweetness level to your liking by adding more maple. Cool and store in glass jars in the fridge for up to 1 month.
Instant Pot
-
1. In the bowl of your instant pot, combine the apples, apple cider, maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt. Cover and cook on high pressure for 20 minutes. Release the steam.
2. Remove the cinnamon stick and then transfer the apples to a blender and puree until smooth. Return to the instant pot and cook, uncovered on sauté for 15-20 minutes, or until slightly thickened. Taste and adjust sweetness level to your liking by adding more maple. Cool and store in glass jars in the fridge for up to 1 month.
Stove-Top
-
1. Combine the apples, apple cider, maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, salt and 1 cup water in a large, heavy bottomed pot over high heat. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the apples are completely softened and the liquid has reduced by half, 30 to 40 minutes, adding water if needed to keep the apples in liquid. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
2. Remove the cinnamon stick and then transfer the apples to a blender and puree until smooth. Return to the pot and cook, uncovered over medium heat for 15-20 minutes, or until slightly thickened. Taste and adjust sweetness level to your liking by adding more maple. Cool and store in glass jars in the fridge for up to 1 month.

Yes, lets! No boring Tuesdays around here!
Thank you! I’ve been looking forward to this recipe (and I’ve already made the panini from last week ;-)) I’m also looking forward to more details about the retreat – the snaps on InstaStories looked cool! You make me want to travel to Colorado!
You totally should, its such a cool place to see! I am so glad you are enjoying the recipes Vera, thank you!
YES!!! Want to hear more about your weekend and see pictures. Apple butter is great and so is sweet potato and peach butter.
Yum! Sweet potato and peach butter sound amazing… I think I need to make those! Thanks Charlotte!
Thanks for this recipe, Tieghan, been waiting for it! Also, would love to hear all about the HBH weekend and see all the photos. Glad it went well.
Thank you Jean! I can’t wait to share it!
This look so delicous, I can only imagine how great it tastes and smells to… I’m wondering how I could make this since I don’t own a slow cooker
Just make this on the stove, simmer on medium low for 1-2 hours, stirring often until the apples are super soft. then puree. That will be great! Let me know if you have questions. Hope you love the apple butter!
Tieghan thanks for the lovely recipe. I’ve been meaning to comment on here for ages (been horribly busy). Anyway, what I’ve been meaning to say is, not only do I love your recipes, I also love the photos (I’ve published over 500+ magazines), so I do know good photography when I see it! In fact, I’ve been known to pin some of your recipes that for whatever reason, I know I won’t cook, but I love the pics so pin them anyway! I do enjoy your posts I just wish I was in synch with your seasons (I live in Australia, so the seasons are opposite (Christmas is the height of our summer!). Anyway, thank you for all the lovely recipes And I will be buying your book (& one for a friend) this Christmas!
Wow thank you so much Victoria! Oh ya, it is Spring in Australia right now. Well I hope you enjoy some of my recipes from our spring season! Also, it makes me so happy to hear that you like my photos and you are purchasing the book! Let me know what you make! ?
YES been looking forward to this one! I assume the apples should also be peeled, or not?
Thank you! No need to peel the apples. Hope you love this!
Thanks Victoria! No need to peel the apples. Let me know if you have other questions. Enjoy!
Thank you! I have this in my instant pot on the slow cook high setting now. I’m at the open cooking stage, but it doesn’t really seem to be thickening after an hour and a half. Any advice?
Hi Victoria! So this will thicken more as it cools. I am thinking what you have is probably fine. Hope it all turned out great! Let me know if you have other questions. Thank you!
Yes yes yes please post a full recap of the retreat! So excited to hear about it!
Yay! Thanks Erica!
I cannot wait to make this apple butter..oh my! It’s looks delicious! I need to go apple picking this weekend and then make this recipe and the old fashioned!
I am excited to hear about the retreat and how everything went. Sounds like everyone had a great time.
Made the Apple Pandowdy for a desert on Sunday, it was delicious! Everyone loved it! Thanks for the great recipe!
I am so glad to hear that! Thank you! ?
Thank you Joshua! I hope you absolutely love both recipes! I can’t wait to share with you guys the retreat, it was so fun!
Can you halve the recipe, or if not how long with the apple butter keep?
Hi! Yes, you can halve the recipe, that works great! The apple butter keeps for 2 weeks in the fridge in a sealed container. Let me know if you have other questions. Enjoy the apple butter!
Can this be frozen?
HI! I have not tried freezing this, so I am not sure. I would think it would freeze just fine though. Please let me know how it goes. Thank you and enjoy the apple butter!
This looks delicious! What a fun twist on traditional apple butter!
Thank you Kari!!
Yes! Definitely post on the weekend; I followed on Instagram but I’m sure there was so much more that we all missed.
This apple butter looks amazing. I hope you’re thinking about doing a pumpkin butter too!
Ooo pumpkin butter sounds so good.. I’ll keep it in mind! Thank you Penny!
Hi there- 1- do you peel the apples and 2- can you use other kinds of apples? Thank you!
Hi Juliet! No, you do not peel the apples and yes, you can use other apples, but I do like honeycrisp the best. Just use a firm, tart apple. Hope you love this!
I just made some apple butter in the slow cooker and I love it. I peeled the apples which takes some time ( my husband does it) and is kind of wasteful. I am going to try your recipe because you don’t peel the apples.
I am sure both ways taste great, but I hope you love this recipe! Let me know ? Thanks Gerlinde!
Hey Tieghan,
I’m looking forward to making this apple butter recipe and filling my apartment (or mom’s house) with the smell of fall. I would love a full post on the retreat! Haha I don’t have an instagram so I didn’t get to see your stories, but I’d love to hear about how everything went! I’m glad it seemed to go well and you can now (somewhat) breathe. ?
(Or at least make more apple butter).
Awh thank you Krisin! I can’t wait to show you guys the retreat, it was so fun! Anyway, I hope you love this recipe and love the smell!!
I am so excited about this recipe! Apple cinnamon combo is my favorite of all time! The only problem is, that I do not have a slowcooker 🙁 are there any other ways I could do this?? Rice cooker perhaps? Or just a normal pot on low heat? Thanks so much!
Also I have to say, I randomly found you on instagram a long time ago and always liked your posts, the pictures are so inviting and yummy.. Only recently I started to look into your recipes a bit more and I am just amazed. I love your blog!
HI! I would recommend a normal pot over medium low heat for about 102 hours or until the apples are extra soft. Let me know if you have any questions at all, but I think that should work great!
And thank you! What a kind comment! So glad you are enjoying my work. Hope you love all the recipes you try! 🙂
Hi, thank you for your answer!
I will definitely try the normal pot. I got a bit confused, because you wrote 102 hours. Did you really mean that, or did you mean 10 hours? Thanks! Looking forward to your new recipes. Warm autumn greetings from Prague!
Hi! Sorry, I meant 1-2 hours! Clearly was typing too fast, sorry about that. Let me know if you have other questions. Hope you love the this. thanks! 🙂
Is apple cider the same there as it is in the UK? Cider over here is an alcoholic, carbonated drink, served cold. I’d love to make this.
Apple cider in the US is not the same as we have in the UK. It isn’t alcoholic and it isn’t sparkling (that is what Americans would call “hard cider” I believe). They have a distinction between apple cider and apple juice, where the latter is usually sweetened, more like the cheaper versions of apple juice we’d get over here. The closest you’ll get in the UK to apple cider is one of the cloudy apple juices, such as Copella.
Hi Laura! Typically our is does not include alcohol or carbonation. I would use apple juice in place of the cider. Let me know if you have any questions. Hope you love the apple butter!
If you spread your toast with cream cheese and then apple butter, it taste like the toast is topped with apple-y cream cheese icing. Just sayin’.
Yum!! What a great idea for breakfast!
This looks great. Question though…what size crock put do you use for this recipe? I don’t have a huge one like most people, it’s medium sized but I don’t know the exact amount offhand. Looking forward to hearing more about the retreat!
Hi Amber! I think a medium size crockpot will be great. Mine is 7quarts. Hope you love the apple butter!
Just finished making this, so yummy! I used an immersion blender to “sauce” the butter, worked perfectly. I also strained my apple mixture through a sieve into a bowl to get an even smoother texture, and dumped it back into the slow cooker to finish cooking.
Sounds awesome! I am so glad you liked this!
OMG this looks amazing! My grocery store is selling huge bags of apples now, and I’ve been dying to make something with them. Quick question: does this apple butter keep in the freezer?

I have not tried freezing this, so I am not sure. I would think it would freeze just fine though. Please let me know how it goes. Thank you and enjoy the apple butter!
LOVE your Blog and so excited to see you have a book! Congratulations! Your photos are inspirational always!
SO… I made this apple butter from Red D apples from grandmother’s tree (that my 4 year old daughter picked with grandmother)- and as they weren’t the most perfect apples, I had to work at getting them usable (i.e. trimming off many bad parts) – but totally worth it as what a special day for my daughter… That being said, I followed the recipe and it is SO tart! Maybe I used too much apple cider vinegar for my type of apple? Have any suggestions to help save this batch?! Already added an extra cup of maple syrup… I’m thinking white sugar at this point… Thoughts? TIA!
Made it today- it was amazing!
Make sure you use apple cider (not apple cider vinegar) 🙂
Hey Kim! First, what an incredibly fun day. Such great memories!!
Did you use apple cider vinegar or apple cider? If you used vinegar, that is probably the issue. My recipe uses apple cider. Also, it could have been the apples. I used honeycrisp apples that where pretty sweet. Next time, try adding more maple until it is sweet enough to your taste. Let me know if you have questions. thank you!!
Really liked this part of the article, with a nice and interesting topics have helped a lot of people who do not challenge things people should know you need more publicize this so many people who know about it are rare for people to know this, Success for you
Thank you!
Oh my goodness, I just jarred this up, it’s delicious! Perfect amount of maple syrup and spices – I’m planning on giving my neighbors some tomorrow! Thanks for sharing xo
That is so sweet of you! I am so glad you like this and I hope your neighbors do as well. Thank you!
I am not sure if someone else asked this, but do you take the cinnamon stick out before blending? Thank you!
Hi Juliet! Yes, you remove the cinnamon stick before blending. Recipe is all fixed. Thank you! Let me know if you have questions and I hope you love recipe! 🙂
Finally getting around to making this – kitchen smells great – I used my dandy little Cuisinart Smart Stick and pureed the cooked apples in the crock pot rather than transferring hot stuff to a blender. Worked fine.
Great! I am so glad this turned out well for you! Thanks Marge!
Loving this! Eating it right now on a slice of homemade zucchini carrot bread. Delicious – I can’t get enough! Made it as written, with Honeycrisp and Liberty apples from the farmers market. Also used both a cinnamon stick and some fresh ground cinnamon. Cooked it on high for 4-5 hours, then low for another 5-6 hours. YUM! Thank you!
Sounds amazing! I am so happy you enjoyed this recipe Lisa!
AMAZING!!! Made this last night, and put in on french toast this morning. East and delicious.
So glad this turned out great for you Taryn! Thank you!!
Nice post i like it so much.I am very pleased to see your website which have rich information.
Thank you so much!
I made the apple butter and purred like instructed. However, I’m on the 3rd hr after blending and it still looks like applesauce. What should I do?
Hi! This sounds like the right consistency to me. I would stop cooking. It will firm up a little in the fridge too. let me kno if you have other questions. Enjoy! 🙂
Very good! This is nice recipe for me, thanks 🙂
Perfect! Thank you Alex!
Could this be preserved/canned? I’m hoping to use this as stocking stuffers and get it made now!
Hi! I am not sure as I have never done so, but I would think preserving or canning this would work great. Please let me know if you have other questions. Hope you love this recipe. Thank you! ?
Made this yesterday and although it tastes great its consistency is very liquidy. I followed everything exactly as written. Any ideas how to try and thicken it up, cant put it on anything because its in such a liquid state. Thanks
HI! Just let the sauce cook with the lid off for an hour or so until it thickens. You can also just simmer this on the stove for 30 minutes until it thickens too. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Happy Thanksgiving! ?
Yummy, I don’t think I have ever tried apple butter before! But this homemade recipe looks better than anything store-bought! Looks so fresh and sweet!
Thank you Cassie! You should try it, its so good!
This looks perfect. Can’t wait to try it.
Thanks Jason!

With the 1st day of September being tomorrow I have all the fall feels and your blog is the BEST for fall recipes! I have made many of your recipes and love them all. I use apple butter a ton in both savory and sweet applications and loved your other recipes in the top that mentioned ways to use it! My husband and I were in Boston/vermont last year and of course purchased maple syrup from Vermont which I have been dying to use! . We also had a pizza that made me think of you and a great use for apple butter!-apple butter base, smoked pork, red onion, gruyere, mozarella, and sage! I made this apple butter yesterday and it is truly amazing. I can’t wait to re-create that pizza and make your others recipes using it! Any other riffs on pizza with apple butter you can think of would be awesome because who doesn’t like a Friday pizza night!
I am so glad you’re so excited for Fall recipes because.. SAME! Thank you so much Taylor! I hope you love your pizza tomorrow!
Tieghen – I agree with Victoria S. that you have a beautiful eye for food photography – it is what first drew me to your site – thanks for sharing your talents! While I don’t love to cook, I’ve started cooking more and counting less on prepared foods.
As as a happy consequence have lowered my blood pressure …whole food is so much better than processed! So, thank you so much for sharing your inspiration and best wishes for your continued success …and happiness!
Awh thank you so much Karen! This is so sweet and I am so glad you have been loving my blog!
Hi Tieghan!
I just made this! My house smells amazing! Lol! I was wondering if this recipe can be canned? I seem to the canning bug right now! I did peel the apples (I don’t know how I missed the part of keeping the skin on!). Clearly I was a bit to excited about the recipe and didn’t read it thoroughly!
Thanks!
Tammy
Hey Tammy! I have not tried canning this, but I don’t see why it would not work. Please let me know how it goes! I am so glad you love this recipe! Please let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks so much! xTieghan
We came home with Ambrosia, Honey Crisp and MacIntosh Apples. I am going to use all 3 in the apple butter as I have 1/2 bushel of each. Last year I used honey crisp and it was amazing. We canned it and it was great! Tiegan your recipes are fantastic. We are a Half Baked Harvest Family!
Thank you so much Kim!
Hi! Does this recipe freeze well?
I want to make some to offer as Christmas’s gifts, and since apple picking season is now, I’d like to use apple I’ve picked.
Thank you,
Sam
HI! This freezes great and is perfect for gifts! Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe. Thanks so much! xTieghan
Would an immersion blender work for this? I don’t have a blender and don’t want another appliance!!
HI! it might take a bit of elbow grease and a little more time, but I am sure you could get it blended with an immersion blender. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe. Thanks so much! xTieghan
Do you peel the apples?
HI! I do not peel my apples, I like the texture the skin provides. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe. Thanks so much! xTieghan
What do I do if it doesn’t thicken like it looks in your pictures? Do I just keep cooking it to see if it will thicken?
Thank you.
Hey Shelly! Yes, just keep cooking until it is thickened to your desired consistency. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe. Thanks so much! xTieghan
I went apple picking and now i have a TON of apples. All different varieties. Do you think this recipe would still work out if I used a mixture of different types of apples?
Thanks!
I have an Instant Pot, could I use that instead of slow cooker? And if yes, any thoughts on time???
For anyone hoping to make this without a slow cooker: I had great success! I simmered all the ingredients for 45 minutes on medium in my Dutch oven (covered), then transferred it to a blender and blended until it was very smooth. I put the puree back in the pot and simmered it for 1 hour, uncovered on medium-low, stirring frequently. It was a great consistency by the end (and especially after a few hours in the fridge) and is absolutely delicious! As a side note: I did try the immersion blender but wasn’t satisfied with how chunky it still was. A minute in the blender gave me the texture I was looking for. Another fantastic HBH recipe I’m sure I will make again!!
I am so glad this turned out amazing for you Allie! Thank you!
Hi Tieghan! Love all your photos and your recipes are great!! I was looking forward to make this apple butter but unfortunately, I was unable to locate the non-alcoholic Apple cider. Can I replace with Concentrated & Unsweetened Apple Juice? Or does it have to be sweetened? Thanks in advance!!
Hey Brenda! I would use unsweetened apple juice in place of the cider. I am sure that will be great. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe. Thanks so much! xTieghan
Very good taste. I made it in the instant pot and it came out great.
Thank you Zsofia!
Very nice, i like it
Thanks!
Wow! Thanks for sharing! I can’t wait to make this! Maple and apples, never tried it before but it sounds delish!
Thank you so much June!
Thanks for making this easy! Made it without clove bc I didn’t have it handy and I’m not a huge fan. I was happily surprised with how much the recipe made. Slathering it on my pancakes and toast!
Got a huge stash of apples from harvesting at a friends so I need more easy ideas! Unfortunately I cannot live on apple butter and apple crisp. ?♀️
I am so happy to hear that! Thank you Danielle!
Love this apple butter so much!! I made this in my mini instapot, half recipe, blended in my Vitamix and finished on the stove top, which may have been unnecessary…although turned out great and perfect for the Amazing Apple Butter Bars (big hit for my dinner party last night)!! Now, I’m making a second batch for a friend:). So delish even on its own…a spoonful of Fall! Thank you! Love ALL that you create & share!!!
Thank you so much Janey! I am so glad you are loving this recipe!
Thanks for this recipe

How long will this Apple butter keep? Can you freeze it!!!
The apple butter will keep about 2 weeks in the fridge. Yes, you can freeze the apple butter. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe. Thanks so much! xTieghan
Hi there, this was delicious but like some other comments above, mine never set. I allowed to cool for a few hours and then refridgerated overnight and still quite soupy. Any tips to help thicken it to a more buttery consistency? Can still use for a syrup like topping if not as the taste is delicious!
Hey Melissa! I recommend placing the butter back in the slow cooker and cooking, with the lid off for an addition hour. That should thicken the butter up! Please let me know if you have any other questions. So glad you love this recipe. Thanks so much! xTieghan
My apple butter is still pretty runny after letting it cool over night. Is it ok to put it back in the slow cooker to reduce more after it has already been cooled down? Thanks!!
Hey Ariel! Yes, you can certainly put the apple butter back in the slow cooker to thicken it. You can also thicken it up on the stove-top as well. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe. Thanks so much and happy Thanksgiving! xTieghan
Perfect
Thank you!
I just tried this, it was aaaaamazing! My whole house smells so good. I just made this, to make the brie and apple dessert.. But this is a can definitely stand alone and it’s so easy! Talking about easy, I’ve been married 14 years and I’m a 35 year old women. Who’s cooked the same 10+ dishes for a decade and a half. Which only half of those are from scratch. My neighbor was obsessed with your recipes. But I figured it’s because she’s a good cook. So it’s easy for her to make anything good. I first tried your beef tenderloin and mushroom dish. It the was fun to make , easy to follow and absolutely delicious. My husband loved it. I was shocked. He’s a very harsh critic. Then everyday other day since, I’ve tried a different recipe. Not to get emotional, but you’ve turned me from a person who was scared to cook. To a person who can’t wait to make a meal. Thank for teaching this grown women how’s to finally cook.
Hi Aliya! I am so glad you loved this apple butter recipe! Also, I am so glad you love cooking now.. Thats amazing!! Thank you so much!
delicious and made my house smell amazing! can’t wait to use this in a bunch of your recipes!
I am so glad this turned out so amazing for you! Thank you Laura!

Do you peel the apples?
Hi Terry, I do not peel my apples. I love to leave the skins on. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you! xTieghan
Could I make this in my instant pot?
Hi Caroline! Sure, you can make in the instant pot. I would combine all ingredients and cook for 12-15 minutes on high pressure, release the steam, then saute for 10 minutes to thicken the apple butter. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you! xTieghan
I do t know what the equivalent apple is in the UK to a honey crisp apple. Is it a tart apple like a Granny Smith or more like a Braeburn or Jazz apple. Or is it a cooking apple like a tart Bramley apple. The wrong sweetness of the apple would change the end result. Thanks.
Hi Nina! It is not tart, I would say it is more sweet with a little tartness. I hope you love this recipe! xTieghan
Everyone should make this in the fall! So easy & so delicious!
So glad you loved this Kristin! xTieghan
Love it!
Thank you! xTieghan
This might sound silly, but can a Dutch oven replace a slow cooker? And would it be the same times to cook?
Hi Miranda! A dutch oven will be great! I would cook, covered over low heat for 2-3 hours, puree, then simple until the apple butter thickens to your liking. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you! xTieghan
Made this today and it’s delicous! My mom made apple butter and canned it every Fall with my Grandma’s apples so I was pretty skeptical if this would stand up to her recipe – because of course she doesn’t have a recipe so I had to look for one! – and it certainly does. Absolutely delicious. Cooked in my crockpot for 7 hours on high and blended it in batches. Every HBH recipe I’ve tried has been a keeper! ❤️
Awh that is so great to hear! So glad this turned out so well for you Sarah! xTieghan
Can this be canned in a water bath?
Hi Kimberly! Yes it could, but I’d suggest she follow the instructions as outlined in the Ball Guide to Canning for fruit preserves. Let us know if you have any other questions!
is there any alternative for the slow cooker or the instant pot? unfortunately i own neither of them
Just made this so I can make your spiced apple pecan cake tomorrow. So delicious! I added a couple tablespoons of butter at the end of the puree process for some extra richness and it was divine!
Oh man what a perfect addition! Thanks for sharing Kaylin!

I made this recipe this past weekend and overall it came out pretty good– tastes great, but mine did not reduce to the consistency in your photos! It’s much runnier… maybe I didn’t use enough apples? Still happy with the outcome though! I plan to give them out as favors at our (Canadian) Thanksgiving next weekend 🙂 Thank you for the recipe!
Ooo love that! I hope it turns out amazing for Thanksgiving, Erin! Thank you! xTieghan
What if mine is not thickening? It has been back in the slow cooker for two hours
Hey Alex, did you turn the heat to high and leave the top off the slow cooker? If so, try switching to a saucepan and simmer the apple butter over medium heat on the stove for 20-30 minutes That will thicken the butter up for you. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you! xTieghan ???
Could you make this in an instant pot?
Hi Emily! Yes, you can cook on high pressure for 20 minutes, then simmer the butter on saute for 15-20 minutes, until it has thickened. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you! xTieghan ???
Can this be canned for Goff’s using water bath canning or frozen?
Hi Chanel! I am not too familiar with canning, but I would image that this would work well and I know others have done so with success! Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you! xTieghan ???
So I just bought an instant pot!! I’m so excited, and wondered if I could do this in there? What would the timing be?

This sounds delicious! I want to make this for the french toast sticks 🙂 I’m just wondering, is apple cider same as apple cider vinegar?
Hi Mirka! It is not the same! Apple cider does not have a vinegar taste it would be found near the apple juice section of the grocery store! Please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
This looks wonderfully delicious! Is there anything I could substitute the apple cider for if I don’t currently have apple cider?
HI! Do you have apple juice? Or grape juice? Use either of those or just water. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you!! xTieghan
I am trying to use up the apples on my counter which are a mix of green apples and honey crisp, would mixing be ok?

You could do this on the stove top following the same instructions! I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
Really wish the recipe had of stated the Apple cider is not the same in the UK. I went through the comments after 8 hours of cooking this because I wanted to see if anyone had mentioned how thick it should be and came across a comment that said the cider is different in the US and UK people should just use apple juice which I didn’t know because I’ve never made this or applesauce before… gutted that I wasted 8 hours and £25 trying out the recipe 🙁
Hi Samantha! I am really sorry that this did not turn out well for you. I unfortunately do not know what kind of apple cider there is in the UK.. but it is more of an apple juice yes. Please let me know if there is anything I can help with! xTieghan

Good evening! I’m a new follower and have loved the 3 things I’ve made so far. This is my next one that I am trying tomorrow! Just 2 questions.
1 – Will a food processor work the same as the blender to get the correct texture needed?
2 – I have the mini instant pot (3 qt), should I cut the recipe in half or do you think it would be okay with the full recipe? AKA does this recipe fill up most of the regular sized instant pot?
Hey Katherine,
Thanks so much for following along and trying the recipes! Yes a food processor will work, the instant pot might be a little small so you may want to cut the recipe in half or follow the stove top/slow cooker instructions. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
Made this using the Cortland and McIntosh apples we had picked last weekend. Did the instant pot version and it turned out amazing! Just the right amount of sweetness and tart, and it made so much I could share with family. I will never buy apple butter again! Thanks for another simple but delicious recipe!
Question: If I halved the recipe would it be half the cook time??
Hey Jessica,
I am so glad you enjoyed the recipe! Yes, if you halve the recipe you can also cut the cooking time in half. Please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
We are going apple picking next weekend and this is this is the first thing I’m going to make! Thanks so much!

I made this. Really delicious! Just wondered about shelf life. I’ve read a few articles that if you process in sealed jars, it can last up to 6 months. Hoping to make more now and give as Xmas gifts. Thoughts?
Hey Jennifer,
This recipe is good for 1 month in the fridge. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
Hi! I’m in the process of making this and I’m hoping to can it. Do you think that will work for storage? Or would it need some acid added to it do you think? It smells really good!

This looks amazing! I’m planning to use some of it in your apple cider doughnuts this weekend 🙂
I’ll be using an instant pot, but I’d like to cut the recipe in half…should I also reduce the cooking time, and if so, by how much? Should the time change be proportional to the change in quantity?
Hey Lilla,
If you plan to only make half of the recipe you will also want to cut the cook time in half. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
I made this last Thanksgiving and it lasted in a sealed container in the fridge until July.
Wow that is so amazing! Thank you Marwa! xTieghan
Made your apple butter about 3 weeks ago. When it was finished I looked at all my little jars and thought, “This was a mistake! How will just 2 of us ever eat all this??” Well, we have almost finished it, there is only 1 cup of it left. We have eaten it on oatmeal, with pork chops, on toast or bagels. Bought more apples. It is time for a second batch!!
Wow well I am really glad this recipe turned out so amazing for you, Staci! Thank you for trying it!! xTieghan
I’d love to try this, I don’t think I’ve seen apple cider, just apple cider vinegar which I don’t like 😫 what’s the beat substitute?
Hey Samah,
You could use apple juice. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
