Frothy Whipped Coffee White Russian.
Say hello to the Frothy Whipped Coffee White Russian. It’s not your average White Russian, just better. Homemade “whipped” coffee, mixed with the classic White Russian ingredients of vodka, Kahlúa, and milk. It’s a touch of creaminess, hinted with vanilla and coffee, and it’s perfectly sweet. This is a fun and delicious new twist on a classic cocktail that can be served…any time of the year…enjoy!
Well, I finally caved and made the whipped coffee that I’ve seen pretty much everywhere around the internet. I hesitated for quite a while, but once I had this recipe concept for a whipped coffee cocktail, I knew I had to try it.
So I did, and you know something? It’s so easy and actually pretty darn fun.
If you somehow haven’t yet seen the “whipped coffee” I’m talking about, you can read more about it here. It’s so simple. You just take hot water, instant coffee, and a touch of sugar and whip the three ingredients together until it looks similar to whipped cream. It’s served over ice milk and is currently the coffee drink everyone is talking about. I know it seems odd, and trust me, it is odd, but sometimes odd things work.
And this works.
The truth is, I actually enjoy instant coffee a lot. It’s how I first started drinking (and loving) coffee a few years back. I’ve since upgraded my method of brewing coffee (hello to my beloved Breville espresso machine), but every now and then a cup of instant coffee is still enjoyed.
Soo, long story short, I had this idea to top a classic White Russian with whipped coffee. I hesitated at first, but then I just went with it…and here we are today.
I’m EXCITED. Shocker, I know.
This is unusual and very different. But…it’s easy. It’s fun. And yes, it’s also just so darn good.
The Details.
Start with the whipped coffee. As I said, it’s simple. Just whip hot water with instant coffee powder and a touch of honey. I was kind of shocked this worked, but trust me, it does. It’s creamy, light, and extra fluffy.
Now, grab a cocktail glass and fill it with ice. Add a good splash of vodka, a touch of Kahlúa, and a little vanilla too. Pour over some milk, stir, then dollop on the whipped coffee and let it slowly sink into the cocktail. Stir again.
And that’s it. Enjoy your frothy, Whipped Coffee White Russian.
My recommendation? This drink may be a bit over the top, but hey, it’s Saturday and we’re living life from home…anything goes. Soooo, let’s just make a fun White Russian and have a great Saturday night!

Frothy Whipped Coffee White Russian
Not your average White Russian, just better! A fun delicious new twist on a classic cocktail!
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon hot water
- 1 tablespoon instant coffee powder
- 1 tablespoon honey or granulated sugar (see note)
- 2 ounces (1/4 cup) vodka
- 1 - 1 1/2 ounces (2-3 tablespoons) Kahlua
- 1-2 ounces (2-4 tablespoons) whole milk or nut milk
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
-
1. Combine the hot water, instant coffee, and honey in a bowl. Using an electric mixer, whip until fluffy and light, 2-3 minutes. Alternately, you can do this with a hand frother too.
2. Fill a glass with ice. Add the vodka, Kahlua, and a splash of vanilla. Stir. Pour the milk over and stir to combine. Spoon the whipped coffee overtop. Gently stir and enjoy!
Recipe Notes
Sweeteners: I love the flavor of honey and it works well, but sugar does whip up prettier and smoother.
If you love a lot of Whipped Coffee on Top: use 2 tablespoons instant coffee, 2 tablespoons hot water, and 1-2 tablespoons sugar.

I tried out this viral whipped coffee foam the other day and couldn’t work out to do with it. I’ve just tried your way and boozy is definitely the best way to enjoy it. Sadly my presentation isn’t quite insta-worthy, but they are seriously tasty and perfect in the Isolation time we live in. I’m in Australia, so it is Saturday night drink time right now!
Thank you! I hope you are all safe 🙂
Hi! I am really glad this recipe turned out well for you! I am sure it looked amazing as well! I hope you are staying safe and healthy! xTieghan
Tieghan, you gave me the idea of trying it with molasses, it worked, yay! I drink whipped coffee every day, it is my new ritual. Such a nice dessert!
Thank you so much Jenny! xTieghan
Hi Tieghan,
This looks so darn good… but I am wondering if I could make it with my “walk off the table” strength regular coffee, instead of going to the store and purchasing instant. I am guessing it still won’t be strong enough….thoughts?
Thanks for sharing all your tasty and gorgeous ideas with us.

Hi Heather,
Thanks so much for your kind message! Unfortunately, the instant coffee is key here. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
Can you do this with regular coffee instead of instant? I’ve never made whipped coffee before!
Hi Keri,
So sorry but the instant coffee is key! I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
This may be a dumb question, I blame it on quarantine head. I have KAF instant espresso powder…can that be substituted for instant coffee?
Hi Keely,
So sorry but the instant coffee is key, it is all part in the magical fluff. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
This is just gorgeous!!
Thank you so much! xTieghan
Does the whipped copy stay fluffy if you make ahead?
Hi Lauren,
You need to use the whipped coffee once you make, it will not stay fluffy. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
I need this in my life! This and a pastry, all set 🙂
Thank you so much Tara! I am so glad you like this! xTieghan
Oh my!! The whipped coffee sounds fabulous with this white Russian! What a perfect drink to enjoy during these crazy times. Thanks so much for sharing!
Yes!! I am so glad you are liking this Linger! Thank you so much! xTieghan
For those asking if you could use instant espresso, I tried that for whipped coffee yesterday and I have to say it was not very tasty…. I didn’t have any instant coffee either so I thought it would be a good substitute but it was way too strong! Maybe less instant espresso and more water was needed but not sure how that ratio would work to make it whipped. Cant wait to try this recipe when I am able to get some instant coffee and Kahlua and for now, my instant espresso will be used to make the flourless espresso cake by Tieghan 🙂 xx
Thank you so much Kira! I hope you love this one! xTieghan
Thank you for inspiring me to try whipped coffee! I made it at 8:30am so just did a splash of Bailey’s in the milk and it was SO GOOD!!! Day is off to a great start. Thanks, Teigen!
Thank you so much Hilary!! I am so glad this one turned out so well for you! I hope you are doing well! xTieghan
@Jenny. You mentioned molasses..was this in place of sweetner or Kahlau ?
Thanks
What’s s of instant coffee works best? I tried with a Starbucks via but maybe it wasn’t the best choice.
Hi Lindsay! I use Folgers brand instant coffee! Please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
This was soooo good! A little strong, but perfectly so. Who knew that instant coffee could whip up like that?
So glad you tried this, Vanessa! Thank you so much! xTieghan
Why can’t I pin some of your recipes?
Hi Kim! I am not sure.. I will look into them! Is there any in particular you’re having trouble with? xTieghan
I was skeptical! I didn’t think the instant coffee, honey and water would whip up thick, but it did amazingly so! This is tasty but dangerous! Drinking it at 2 in the afternoon because I can’t have coffee too late! This is a new favourite and will definitely make again!
I am so glad you loved this recipe Ashley!! Thank you so much! xTieghan
I had everything and made this today, Oh Yeah!!! Happy in the apocalypse! (for a moment while I’m drinking this anyway) Really good!!!
Stay safe everyone.
So perfect! Thank you for trying this one, Karen! Stay well! xTieghan

Ohhh… Bring it on Baby! There’s just one way to make this recipe even better and that’s with home made Kahlua. Just search the internet for “Best Kahlua Coffee Recipe – Lake City Coffee”
Thank you so much Russell! Home made Kahlua?! Amazing!! xTieghan
Just whipped this up and it’s AMAZING! Love your recipes and Instagram stories/tutorials!
Thank you so much Alison! xTieghan
Loved it!! I had already tried the whipped coffee coz everyone else was but this… just perfect!
I am so glad you enjoyed this! Thank you Lauren! xTieghan
Delicious but I couldn’t get the honey water and instant coffee to whip. It stayed liquid. Any ideas?
Hi Kim,
So sorry you had issues with the recipe. You need to keep beating it with the batter, eventually it will whip up it just takes some time. Please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
I made this lovely drink for my husband who loves drinks with coffee. I used vanilla vodka in place of plain vodka.
The coffee whipped up just beautifully.
I stirred the drink as directed so I didn’t get the gorgeous separation of layers and my whipped coffee was almost the same color as the coffee so not worthy of the Gram but so tasty!
Your recipes are incredible. Chocolate fudge pop tarts are next on my list!
I am so glad this turned out so well for you, Carla! Thank you so much for trying it! I hope you are staying well and LOVE The pop tarts! xTieghan
YOU ARE A FREAKING QUEEN! How do you come up with this magic?! Trying this ASAP
Haha SO happy you’re loving this!! I hope it turns out amazing for you Bernice! xTieghan
As a matter of fact, the recipe sounds wonderful. I have tried with regular coffee and milk. I out into my bullet and it comes foamy and frothy also. Tastes great. If you have the time try it. It’s just another way of giving coffee a different appeal. I actually heat the coffee up in a coffee mug then put in bullet and it usually retains heat. Sometimes I’ll throw in micro for a min or so.
Ooo I am sure that is amazing! I hope you try this method, Marilyn! Thank you so much! xTieghan
So good!! Thank you for this idea! I used August instead of honey because that is what I had on hand but so so yummy
Thank you so much Alicia! xTieghan
10/10 will make again. I only had instant espresso so cut the amount of ‘coffee’ by half and kept the water and sugar ratios the same. It was great and whipped up nicely. Cheers!
Amazing!! I am so glad this recipe turned out so well for you, Shelby! Thank you so much! xTieghan
I really liked this a lot but i had a hard time getting the coffee/water/sugar to whip up well like shown in your pictures. It was still thick and luscious though. I used starbucks VIA instant coffee powder
Thank you so much Bridget! Please let me know if you have any questions! xTieghan
You were right, this is a fun drink. We had social distancing Happy Hour with my son and daughter in law last evening. I made the drink for my son and myself. We thoroughly enjoyed it.
Thanks,
Beth (in Rocky River)
Aw that is so sweet! I hope you are all doing well, Beth! Thank you! xTieghan
Look
Mine didn’t look as pretty, but boy, it sure tasted good! I also used vanilla vodka and fortunately hdd decaf instant so I could make an after-dinner drink. Patience while whipping is the key. I used my hand mixer and its whisk, as it’s a small amount to make. Don’t cut back on the sweetener or it’s too bitter!
Ooo love that! I am sure it looked amazing and I am glad it tasted well!! Thank you so much Marlene! xTieghan
It was delicious! I’ve been meaning to try this dalgona craze and this recipe was the perfect combo for my afternoon sweet tooth! Thanks for posting! I added a bit more almond milk with a dash of pumpkin spice and cinnamon! Yum! 🤪
Amazing! I am so glad this recipe turned out so well for you Erika! Thank you! xTieghan
This was a fantastic drink. Made it exactly as the recipe suggests and it was beautiful, too!
Thank you so much Sandra! I am really happy to hear that! xTieghan
Such a great idea! We made our usual White Russian (equal parts vodka, kahlua and fat free half & half) over ice) and topped it with the Dalgona made with decaf instant coffee. It was decadent! I was amazed at how long the Dalgona stayed fluffy! So easy and so good!
Thank you so much Gloria! I am really glad this recipe turned out so well for you! I hope you have an amazing day! xTieghan
OMG this is so yummy I have been trying to make since you posted. Question can you save extra. How would you recommend.
Hi Julie,
So sorry but the whipped coffee will not stay frothed so this really wouldn’t keep well if you saved extras. I hope you love the recipe! xTieghan
Hey, I have another thought on this recipe. Instead of instant coffee, try white coffee. White coffee has almost twice the caffeine as dark roast with a real smooth and very prominent nutty flavor. Just search the internet for “Whole Bean White Coffee”.
Ooo that sounds great! Thank you so much Russell! xTieghan
This drink is amazing! We have made it many times and LOVE it!! Thanks for sharing!!
🙂 Tina
Thank you Tina! xTieghan
Wow your photography is incredible!! Breathtaking 😍 have you had training in taking pictures? Courses etc..? I’d love to know as you seem to present all your recipes so well !
Hi Lilly! You are so kind! I have not taken any courses in photography… I really just learned by taking a lot of photos and playing around with the settings haha. xTieghan
Very good, thx for sharing with us..
Thank you! I am so glad this turned out so well for you, Juliana! xTieghan
This was so good and easy to make! I was already obsessed with the whipped coffee over milk for months now but never would’ve thought to put it over a cocktail! Thank you Tieghan for this outside the box yummy concoction
Thank you so much Carmen! I am so glad this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
Where are those glasses from? Love love love

Yum! We ended up using coffee liqueur instead of kahlua and hot brewed coffee from this morning instead of hot water to mix in with the coffee powder. Really good!!!
Thank you so much Lianna!! I am so glad this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
I made this with vanilla almond milk (unsweetened), sugar and left out the vanilla. My husband said it was the best drink I’ve ever made. A nice treat as we prepare to celebrate an August Christmas my 14 year old is planning to give us joy and hope amongst fires and a pandemic! Thank you for adding to our joy!
Aw that is super amazing to hear, Jenny! Thank you so much for trying this!! xTieghan
Hi there! I look at your recipes all the time and have made a few of your drinks. This one looks sooo good and I am planning on making it today. Did you just put cold brew at the bottom of the glass?
Hey April,
All of the ingredients and instructions are listed above, I did not use cold brew:) I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
SUCH a delish take on a white Russian, Tieghan! You’ve made such a big difference in my family’s life during quarantine with your spectacular creativity! I made one batch of this drink for my family and I with Kahlua and ran out, so improvised with my second batch and used Frangelico (hazelnut liqueur) instead. Amazing. I’d recommend trying with Frangelico next time!
Honestly might just have to whip up some instant coffee to have on my booze-less latte in the morning!
Yes love that! I am really glad you enjoyed this recipe, Anne! xTieghan
Loved it. Used whipped cream vodka and 1/2 and 1/2.
Love that! Thank you so much for trying this one! xTieghan
I love LOVE your presentation of your most delicious looking recipes. Can you tell us a good instant “DECAF* coffee? I presume decaf would work if it’s instant coffee? And what do you serve with these? Or simply are they a dessert drink?
Hey Lucianne,
Sorry I never used decaf coffee, but whatever your local grocery store has will work. I like to serve as a dessert drink. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions. Happy Holidays! xTieghan
Combine the hot water, instant coffee, and honey in a bowl. Using an electric mixer, whip until fluffy and light, 2-3 minutes. Alternately, you can do this with a hand frother too.
Fill a glass with ice. Add the vodka, Kahlua, and a splash of vanilla. Stir. Pour the milk over and stir to combine. Spoon the whipped coffee overtop. Gently stir and enjoy!
Thanks so much!
