Nine Favorite Things.
Thanks for joining me for another Nine Favorite Things post.
Happiest Easter Sunday everyone! I don’t usually put up a blog post on major holidays, but this Easter Sunday is a very different one. I wanted to give any of you out there who may not be able to spend the day with family and friends something to read and enjoy. It’s crazy that we have all been living in “self-quarantine” for weeks now, and even crazier that this is the way we are all spending Easter. I’m slowly adjusting to what everyone is calling the “new normal”. It’s weird, right? How are you all adjusting? How are you staying connected with friends and family during this time?
I’m thankful to be home in Colorado and with family, but it’s weird to not have all of my siblings here right now. For those of us here at home, we really don’t have Easter plans, but as I type this, I’m thinking it would be fun to do a virtual family dinner with all of my brothers and cousins too. Are any of you doing this? I know so many people who have been getting together with friends through zoom and facetime. It’s actually kind of fun and different. Personally, the homebody in me loves being able to be home, being comfortable, yet still being able to enjoy time with friends.
I would love to hear how you all are celebrating today…and what you are making! So far this weekend I’ve seen lots of cinnamon crunch knots, crinkle top chocolate peanut butter skillet blondies, and the original crinkle top brownies too. Lots and lots and lots of baking, that’s for sure.
In other news, I am so happy to share that we have little baby goats running around! Layla, gave birth to three healthy little boys and I have to say they have really brought so much happiness during this time. It’s fun watching them run around, play with each other, and bond with their mom. Layla is the sweetest with them and it’s just nice to see. Always makes you smile when you catch them hopping all over the field.
Coming up this week on HBH, we’ll be sharing more simple recipes that use those pantry staples. We’ll start off with a sheet pan chicken. Then move on to a fun new Asian inspired recipe. I’ll also be sharing my current go-to Mexican night recipe. And then I’ve also got a couple of new spring-inspired baking recipes that will be perfect for our days at home this month. Is there anything you’re looking to see in the coming weeks? I always love to hear your ideas, so let me know!
Also, in case you missed it, I shared my Shrimp Tinga Tacos and Spicy Strawberry Paloma over on my friend Molly Sims site. Such a fun, easy, and delicious Mexican night menu.
Lastly, if you’re catching up on blog posts from the week, be sure to sign up for our daily newsletters. They’ll help you to stay up to date with everything that’s happening here, as well as fun content you’ll only get via email. And of course, if you’re meal planning today, don’t forget to check out my menu below (it’s # 9 on the favorite’s list).
I hope you enjoy this week’s Nine Favorite Things and have a wonderful Easter Sunday! I can’t wait to see what everyone is cooking and baking up today on Instagram.
1. A few questions for you…
I have questions for you! I’d like to know what you all are up to, how you are doing, how you are spending your time, how you are feeling, and what you are looking forward to most? I read a post over on A Cup of Joe, which inspired me to ask you all some of the very same questions. You guys always hear from me, but I want to hear from you. So with that, let’s get to know each other a little better today.
- where are you currently at in the world?
- are you with loved ones, or are you by yourself?
- what is making you happy right now?
- what recipes are you loving most right now? tell me one savory and one sweet.
- how long have you been following along with HBH? what do you love most?
- are you working or spending your days at home doing? are you binging new shows, baking…both?
- what is one product or service that’s making this time enjoyable for you?
- what are you most looking forward to after quarantine?
- tell me what in your life you are most grateful for?
My answers…
- I am home in Colorado.
- I live alone in my cozy little house (that I love so much), but my parents and little miss Asher are right next door. I’m thankful to have them so close.
- A few things! One, the string of sunny days and warmer spring temperatures we’ve recently had. Two, you all, and your kindness and gratitude. I say this all the time, but we have the sweetest HBH community. It’s been really fun watching everyone cook and bake so much this past month. And three, working on new projects for HBH that are keeping me inspired.
- Oh man, there are so many. My two favorites that I’ve recently shared are spicy cucumber margaritas and my hot honey mustard pretzel chicken fingers.
- Well…since the very beginning of course 🙂
- I am working…now more than ever. This last month has been busier than all of the holiday season combined. As I said, everyone is cooking and baking up a storm. It’s been exciting to see…but very busy.
- This is so simple, but, candles. You guys I really love candles!
- A family vacation. Hopefully somewhere tropical…but not too far off the beaten path. My family loves to pick very interesting destinations. I’d just love somewhere semi-normal and very sunny + warm!
- So many things. So, so, so many things. First and foremost, my family and their health. We have a very large family and I’m grateful that all of us are healthy. Second, I’m grateful to be working. So many of you have messaged me saying you’ve lost your jobs. I’m just feeling so thankful to be able to work, it’s a blessing during these times.
Ok, your turn! Really excited to hear your answers!
2. If you have some extra time today….

4. favorite questions of the week.
q: Are there any foods you don’t like, but still cook with?
a: Nope! We actually eat all the food I make, so if I’m cooking it, I like it!! With the exception of something I might make for say one of my brothers. Some of the things they request make me cringe, but I love cooking for them so I do it!
q: Is your hair naturally wavy or do you put a curling iron to it?
a: It’s actually dead straight and more like you see it in this photo, but when I take it out of a bun it has curls…that fall within minutes 🙁 I wish they’d hold!
q: Want to know more about you? Family? Collage major? Hobbies? Anything!
a: My family is everything to me! I am one of 7, so there are a lot of us. For fifteen years I was the only girl, then my mom had Asher (my little sister that you always see). I graduated from high school with an Associate’s Degree. My plan was to work in fashion, but I switched gears and started HBH. I’ve been working non-stop on it ever since…8 years now!
I am 26. And nope, I am not married. And no I don’t live with my family, but we are neighbors. My mom, dad, brother, and two cousins all are a part of the HBH team.
I hike daily. If I wasn’t cooking, I’d be working in fashion styling clothes or I’d be in interior design. I love to make things pretty!
q: Is your barn and house on the same property? Like you can go from one to another?
a: Yes! Very lucky to have my house and our studio/office space all on the same property.

6. Quibi…your Sunday entertainment.
I first found out about this all new platform in December when a crew came here to film my brother Red for 5 days. Quibi founder Jeffrey Katzenberg and CEO Meg Whitman (eBay) decided on the name Quibi as a short version for quick bites. Which is what this platform offers…7-10 minute shows to be viewed on your phone or iPad. It’s available for download in the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store. Quibi is giving a free 90-day trial to anyone who signs up in April. After that, if you decide to continue, it’s $4.99 a month. Quibi offers 40+ series in a variety of genres. Some shows are movies in chapters (Survive), some are unscripted (Chrissy’s Court) and some are documentaries (Prodigy).
Here are nine of the more talked-about shows:
Prodigy – Eight episodes highlighting superstar athletes 21 and younger who rose to become some of the best in their sports. This is the trailer for Red’s episode.
Survive – Sophie Turner stars as one of two plane crash survivors who must make their way back to civilization.
Punk’d – Punk’d is back to torment a new generation of celebrities.
I Promise – A documentary following the public school for at-risk youth that LeBron James created in his hometown of Akron, OH.
Thanks a Million – celebrities such as Kirsten Bell, Jennifer Lopez, and more donate $100,000 to an unsuspecting individual.
Chrissy’s Court – Chrissy Teigen presides over real cases in a real court with legally binding decisions.
Fierce Queens – Reece Witherspoon explores phenomenal females in the animal kingdom.
Most Dangerous Game – Liam Hemsworth’s character is in debt and terminally ill with a pregnant wife. To make money to leave his wife he volunteers to become the target in a human hunt.
After Dark – Steven Spielberg’s not yet released spooky series that can only be viewed after dark…like the sun literally needs to be down.

Hi, Tiegan! Thank you for this sweet post and your time in crafting it. In response to your questions: I live in Southwestern Washington by myself, with family in adjoining states who I cannot see right now. I am a native of the Pacific NW, although have lived in many places. What is making me happy right now is writing letters, keeping in touch with my mother on the phone, and working on my photography and writing. I also have a tiny patio garden with herbs and flowers, and a chair there where I read whenever the weather allows. My photography can be found on Facebook on the page of a nonprofit with which I volunteer, NatureScaping of SW Washington, where we have 3 acres of Wildlife Botanical Gardens. I’m trying to cheer folks up with pictures of the gardens. I have followed your blog for several years and love your photos and your vegetarian recipes the best. I have been binging shows on Netflix and Amazon. I look forward to seeing my family and friends later! I want to hug everyone! What I am most grateful for is the things I have always been rich in: My adult children, books, and friendships. Those things abide.
Hi Terry! That sounds like you are doing amazing! I love the idea of writing letters.. I may do that too! Also, I feel like we all just might finish all of the shows on Netflix haha! xTieghan
Wow! You worked very hard on this! It is fantastic and I thank you! Stay well!
Thank you so much! xTieghan
Thanks for another great 9 favourite things post, Tieghen. What a wonderful way to get to know each other. I have been following HBH religiously for 4+ years and I live in New Delhi, India – & feel lucky to be around my parents at this time when we all could really use some emotional support. Things are crazy here too, the country is going through a lockdown and this might get extended until end of April – no Easter celebrations at my home but we did have a very popular Indian festive week, which was spent very quiet- very very unusual. Things that are helping me the most right now: spending more time in the kitchen, reading positive posts (like this one) and checking in with friends – so looking forward to meeting them and of course looking forward to eating out too!!! Your recipes are amazing and we are totally enjoying your IG stories! Thanks for all the hard work you put it. Stay safe.

8. Seeing my kiddos at school again!
9. On my desk at school, I have this piggy bank with a clear front, and a little tin of plastic rhinestones, and when my kids come to check out books or ask reference questions or whatever, they can “Do a Sparkle,” as they call it. They put a rhinestone in the piggy bank and share a happy thought, the best thing about today, even if it’s little – it still sparkles. I get everything from “My cousin’s getting adopted today!” down to “Ummm… I really like corn.” Just thinking about it makes me smile, and I am so grateful to have those memories to fall back on right now, along with the hope of returning to even more happy thoughts when this is all over!
Hi Kate! Oh wow! That is a huge weather change! Wait, that is so sweet that you do that at school! What a good way to have the kids think of the positives throughout the day! Go you!! I hope you are staying healthy and happy! xTieghan

Thanks for the distraction for those of us alone! For the questions, I’m in Minneapolis, MN. Unfortunately I’m by myself but my parents live near so I get to see them from a distance every once in a while. My dog is just about the only thing keeping me sane- along with knowing my BF gets out of the service soon! All the better than takeout recipes! For sweet… I’m horrible at making sweet but I’m going to go try a Dutch baby right now! I think I’ve been following HBH for about 3 years now- ever since I moved back to the states from Colombia in 2017. My favorite part of HBH is that it’s almost impossible to mess up! (Except baking- I mess up all things baking). I’m still working, but from home, when I’m not doing work work I’m doing projects around the house- painting, yard work etc, it isn’t enjoyable but it’s as good a time as any! Natacha Oceane’s home workout guide has been a mental health life saver! I am most looking forward to- and this sounds silly, but bowling- I live just down the street from a bowling ally with crappy bar food and cheap beer and there’s nothing like a Sunday (esp football season) without it! I’m most grateful to be in the low risk category, to still be working, and to have a home I can mess around with and a dog who always reminds me everything will be ok.
Hi Erika! I am glad you are doing well and get to see your parents quite often! Also, I hope your boyfriend makes it home safely and thank you for his service!! Haha I am glad you have not messed up most of my recipes, but it happens! Especially to me almost everyday haha. xTieghan

Happy Easter- I appreciate you taking the time to ask questions, so I want to take the time to answer. I live in MN and I’m sheltering in place with my husband and the youngest of our three sons who is finishing his freshman year in college online. Right now I am happy because I am able to work remotely, I teach yoga and meditation at The Emily Program. We work with people who struggle with eating disorders. I just made my first batch of macaroons! I used a Zoe Bakes recipe, though she used grahams, and I don’t have a scale, so my measurements were slightly off. They look much better than they taste. I am allergic to corn and wheat so trying to find recipes that honor both of those needs can be tricky. My savory recipe is your Salsa Verde Chicken Tortilla Soup! (Without the tortillas!) My husband adores it. We taught our boys how to make it and send our oldest back to work with a wonderful care package of soup to keep him healthy as he works in food service. I’ve been following HBH since the fall before the olympics. I LOVE your spin on flavors. We have your cookbook as well and have never been disappointed with one of your recipes. As I mentioned, I’m working at home and I have more time, not driving to and fro or teaching at the studio. I have a set of crystal singing bowls that I have more time to play with, which makes me happy. And I’m FINALLY watching Downton Abby. Better late than never! One product that is making this time enjoyable is the game Catan. We play with my son almost every night! I loose a lot, and it’s so nice to sit at the table and talk without the television on.
I’m incredibly grateful for my family right now. It’s hard to be separated from my oldest 2 boys and my siblings, parents and extended family (I’m the youngest of 6!) And everyone is safe and healthy which is making me tear up a bit just typing because I know that nothing is guaranteed and I’m blessed and lucky to know that right now, there is so much Grace in my life.
Thank you for this little break in my morning. I Love your blog and look forward to receiving your recipes each week. I hope you take good care of yourself. peace- sandy
Hi Sandy! I am glad you are able to work remotely and for such an amazing cause! Also, I am so glad you are enjoying my blog and cookbook! That makes me so happy! I hope you and your family are staying happy and healthy! Thank you! xTieghan

I really enjoy gardening so this time of year is my favorite. What I am looking forward to is a day at the beach with my sister, who I haven;t seen in weeks, and to travel to California to see my son who we haven’t seen since Christmas.

what recipes are you loving most right now? I’m loving grain bowls. The other day I made one with quinoa, strawberries, spinach, egg, and sprinkled “everything seasoning” on top. I alternate between farro, rice, and quinoa and pile on the veggies and fruit. I love to bake, especially cinnamon-y and chocolaty things, but not having anyone to share with means that I’m trying to avoid making sweets and potentially eating them all! When I go back to the office I want to try the pb blondies -I’m sure they’ll be a hit!
how long have you been following along with HBH? I can’t remember when I first started reading, but it’s been a year or two. I look forward to your chatty updates, descriptions of recipes and amazing photos!
are you working or spending your days at home doing? are you binging new shows, baking…both? Some tv and video games, reading, crafting, and walking outside when possible. We’re approaching the “unbearably sticky” season in south Texas, so I want to enjoy the fresh air, even if it’s in the backyard.
what is one product or service that’s making this time enjoyable for you? Technology, especially skype and zoom, so I can see my family and friends. I miss seeing people’s faces!
what are you most looking forward to after quarantine? Taking some of the lessons I’ve been learning about slowing down and reducing stress, trying to live a less stressed lifestyle, and enjoying deepened connection with my family.. Also, sharing baked goods!
tell me what in your life you are most grateful for? Right now it’s not having a commute (there’s a theme, here), seeing the little plants starting in my garden, that my husband and I get along and are doing well sharing our home for working and relaxing, that everyone I know is staying healthy.
Hi Ellie! You are too kind. I truly love connecting with you guys and since we have to do it virtually, I thought this is a good way haha. I am really glad your stress levels are down and you are seeing the good in the situation right now! I hope the weather stays nice for you and you are able to get outside! Stay well! xTieghan
Hi Tieghan and everybody! I’m currently in Southern California at my parents’ home, but my house is actually in Minneapolis. I had already planned a trip out here to help out after my mom’s rotator cuff surgery, so here I am. I’m staying a little longer than originally planned, but since everyone at my company is working from home anyway, it made no sense for my brother to risk traveling from New York, where he lives. I’m very grateful to be with family, and not be holed up alone through all of this. I’m also grateful for my mom’s nice spacious kitchen! I’ve been baking a lot of bread, including your lovely star-shaped monkey bread recipe for Easter breakfast this morning. Bread is making me happy! My other HBH foray this week was a favorite of mine: the mac and cheese with secret cauliflower. My mom hates cauliflower, but said she couldn’t even taste it, so I sneaked one over on her. Tee hee! I discovered your site about a year ago now and it’s my go-to location for finding something yummy to try. I particularly love the slow cooker recipes and one-pot asian offerings.
During quarantine, I’m mostly working, hanging out with my folks, reading a novel (Space Opera by Catherynne Valence) and Hulu just started streaming The Wire, so I’ve started watching that … want to see if it’s really the best TV show ever, like people say (I’m only two episodes in, but it’s definitely very good). I’m also thankful that my local knitting store in Minnesota is doing mail order … so I have the needles I need to move forward with my projects. I SHOULD be working on the novel I’m writing, but with all the funkiness to my normal routine, that practice has suffered. I have decided not to feel too guilty about that.
After quarantine, I’m most looking forward to getting back to my board game group. I really miss that. I’m also looking forward to getting back home to my cat. He’s happily living with a friend of mine right now, but I miss him.
Thanks for the “family” gathering. I hope everyone is staying well and happy and connected, however possible, during this bizarre time.
Hi Diane! I am glad you get to spend this time with your family and you are staying safe! Oh and a spacious kitchen is always the best!! It feels like you have room to make whatever you want! Also, I may just have to try watching the wire… need some new shows haha! I hope you have an amazing Sunday! xTieghan
I will answer all your questions later but just wanted you to know that I made the Cinnamon Sugar Brown Butter Popovers for the first time and did minis, so I could gift my neighbors this Easter morning. They were perfect and a huge hit! Thanks so much and Happy Easter.

I’m with my husband & kids & my Mum as she lives on the same property with us.
Yoga, discovering new walks, cooking and eating is making me happy!
The chicken meatballs with khai soi soup (not sure i spelt that right!), and banana bread.
It would have to be about 2 years i think, & what i love the most are the recipes of course, but apart from that, your food styling – its so inspiring!
I am still working but only 1-2 days a week. Rest of the time I’m trying to home school my 6 year old, keep my house organised and clean & exercising.
I have watched Misfits, Tiger king, strangers & am now watching Greys Anatomy haha. I am also definitley baking!
Does home delivered wine count?
Also going on holiday! Cannot wait to jump on a plane somewhere tropical & relaxing.

2. Loved ones, thankfully. my fiancé and our cat!
3. So many things. I’m loving feeling more connected to friends and family who are far away than ever, and how much love everyone in the world seems to be showing! From sidewalk chalk messages, to strangers volunteering to do grocery pickups for the elderly… there is a lot of heartwarming, thoughtful moments of humanity happening right now!
4. Honestly, I’ve been making your magic rotisserie roasted chicken – I’ve been making it every week and then my fiancé has been making chicken broth ? sweet – I haven’t baked anything yet but got the ingredients and cannot wait to try your brownies!
5. 3+years. Is “everything” an acceptable answer?! I love how approachable your recipes are (love how much you encourage us to use what we have, not to go out and get special or difficult to find ingredients), and literally everything turns out amazing. Nearly all my recipes are half baked harvest!
6. Both my fiancé and I are lucky enough to work from home. Lots of cooking and using everything we buy in our weekly grocery store run… and doing some home projects we’ve been putting off. I’m also planning our wedding in the fall, which, attempting to plan a wedding during a worldwide pandemic is probably a story within itself hah. Honestly it’s felt really busy!

Hello, Tiegan! I feel myself so happy after reading your “Nine favourite things”, thank you so much for them! And answering your questions: I’m now at my hometown Moscow in Russia, and I’m pretty lucky to be with my husband, but we both are missing our friends and family. What’s making me happy? Well, it seems to be funny, but my everyday routine makes me really happy and full of energy. Yoga in the morning, meditation, my work, reading books in the evening and cooking for me and my love. Today is rain here, so I think about some cozy and warm recipes like oat cookies or browny, and for savory ones it is naan.I’ve following HBH near 1 year or so, the mos loving things are cozy “Nine favourite things”, I always waiting for them! And reciepes that are easy, but sooooo tasty!
My days I spend at home, but most part of day I’m working except weekends, but I love my work and I have some time in the evening for just what I like.
As loving-to-sit-at-home person I don’t suffer very much, but when I have some panic attacks or nervious about something I take my book and my toy penguin mr.Gerald, it’s really help me calm down and enjoy our home sitting days.
When we can go outside first of all I’ll go out with my friends, I’m missed them so much!
I think, that I’m grateful for every second of my life and people whom I met or will meet in the future. For all that heppens around me I’m grateful. Because every decision and everything that happens is the best of the best!
Hi Ann! I am so glad this made you feel happy and I am glad you are able to keep a routine! That is so important to me as well! I hope this quarantine continues to go well for you and you stay safe and healthy! Thank you for sharing! xTieghan
