Nine Favorite Things.
Thanks for joining me for another Nine Favorite Things post.
Happy November!! Personally, I could not be more excited that November is here. Don’t ask me why, because the closer we get to the end of the year the closer I am to a very hard deadline that’s nearly impossible to meet. Regardless, I am so excited for November. It’s now officially the holiday season and I know the next two months are going to bring so much joy and happiness. Cheesy of me to say, but it’s true! I’ve said it one million times over now, but this is truly my favorite time of year. This year however is feeling even more special. And for so many reasons (see favorite #5 below for one very special reason)!
Before we dive into all things November, how was everyone’s Halloween? Ours was much, much more low-key than previous years with no trick-or-treating, but we managed to have a fun night full of our favorite Halloween movies, pizza rolls for snacking, and Peanut Butter Stuffed Jack-O-Lantern cookies for dessert. Personally, it was my ideal Halloween. I’m such a homebody and never get time to re-watch my favorite movies. Therefore, finding an excuse to watch my favorite childhood Halloween movies was pretty much perfect. There was Hocus Pocus, Halloweentown, and the original Casper. We didn’t get through ALL of them, but twas’ the perfect way to spend Halloween at home.
What about you guys? How did you celebrate? Did any of you get to dress up? I know back in Ohio, my little cousins were able to trick-or-treat!
This past week was an interesting one, to say the least. I spent a lot of time with my little sister, Asher. She’s staying with me all week while my parents are out of town. As many of you know, Asher is a special little twelve year old. We’re fifteen years apart, but that little girl is just like one of my best friends. She’s wise way beyond her years and has more style (and sass) than I could ever have. She. Is. The. Best!
And also…she’s so hard to say no to! She’s has me and all of my brothers wrapped around her little ring filled fingers. We baked a lot of brownies, planned our annual Christmas Day, ordered way too many holiday decorations (and splurged on candles), and stayed up late watching Gilmore Girls re-runs. She was a complete distraction that I really didn’t have time for, but such a welcomed one. I could never turn that girl down.
She even helped me with some Thanksgiving planning and prep! Yes, on to Thanksgiving! I’ll be spending some time today planning out the details of our 2020 Thanksgiving menu. I hope to share our final menu and guide early next week, so be on the lookout for that. Today also marks the start of my Thanksgiving Tips series on Instagram! Expect a lot of holiday talk this year. If you’re looking for some holiday inspiration today, scroll through my 2018 Thanksgiving Menu and 2019 Thanksgiving Menu.
Question: what Thanksgiving questions do you have? Let me know what you need help with, and hopefully, I can answer all your questions!
Question: What are your BEST Thanksgiving tips and tricks? I’ll feature all my favorites throughout the month!
Coming up this week on HBH, Monday is all about another easy autumn recipe that the entire family will love. For Tuesday we’ve got something sweet. It’s likely to be a stressful day so I’m hoping to brighten everyone’s moods. On Wednesday, we’ve got a soup that’s equally perfect as a weeknight dinner as it is on our Thanksgiving table. Then on to a fun dish on Thursday that I hope will everyone love. And for Friday, our first Thanksgiving dessert! Saturday is a wild card. I haven’t fully plotted out my Thanksgiving cocktails just yet.
In addition, if you’re catching up on blog posts from the week, be sure to sign up for our daily newsletters. They’ll help you to stay up to date with everything that’s happening here, as well as fun content you’ll only get via email. If you’re meal planning today, don’t forget to check out my menu below (it’s # 9 on the favorite’s list). You can grab the full grocery list for this week’s menu in our special Sunday newsletter.
1. Things i’m loving, wanting, and excited to try…
watching…Holidate on Netflix. I normally don’t start Christmas movies until Thanksgiving night, but I am way too excited to watch this. Might have to watch tonight. Have you seen it yet?
cooking…Creamy Wild Rice Chicken Soup. Favorite November Sunday night dinner.
loving…MUTHA Face Oil that I grabbed at Violet Grey. I’ve been using this as the last step of my nightly routine to help lock in moisture overnight. It’s worked so well and I love that it’s a clean beauty find.
excited to try…Oribe Shampoo and Conditioner also from Violet Grey. My hair has felt so dry lately, I’m excited to try this!
listening to…Armchair Expert with Matthew McConaughey. I’m going to be honest, I didn’t think I would get through this all the way. But I found Matthew’s stories, particularly his life-story, very interesting and completely surprising. It was a good “doing dishes” listen.
reading…Made for Living. If you follow Amber Lewis, you know she’s the most talented interior designer out there. She just released her first book and it’s full of so much inspiration. This will make the perfect holiday gift.
loving…Zwilling Fresh and Save. This helps reduce food and plastic waste and keeps food fresh up to 5X longer.
also from Zwilling…this Knife Block Set and this Wine Opener. Both would certainly be perfect for holiday gifting.
ordered…new Zara finds! Love this sweater vest and knit sweater. The coziest.
loving…this Free People Mini Dress. How cute would this be for a holiday party?
drinking…Off Hours Bourbon. November is made for bourbon, this is my favorite brand.
2. The most popular recipe of October.
Most Popular: Healthier Slow Cooker Creamy Tortellini Vegetable Soup
Never have I seen a recipe become so popular, so quickly. This soup has been SO well LOVED this month! And that makes me so happy. I love this one too, and the added bonus? It truly is the easiest to make, and even healthy too! A mix of vegetables, simmered with Italian seasonings, a splash of wine, kale, and cheese tortellini. Finish each bowl off with an extra sprinkle of cheese and serve with crusty bread. It’s hearty, full of greens, and so delicious.
Runner Up: Cinnamon Swirl Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Butter Bread.
Would it be October without a pumpkin bread recipe? This one has been everyone’s favorite. It’s all about the pumpkin butter…and the chocolate. SO. GOOD.
Also have to mention: Slow Cooker Saucy Sunday Bolognese Pasta
Everyone’s favorite Sunday sauce. It’s easy, comforting, and best simmered low and slow on a chilly Sunday.
3. Everything Needed For Thanksgiving…
4. Favorite question of the week…
q: What’s your favorite Thanksgiving food?
a: I’m all about the sides!! Brussels sprouts, mashed potatoes (of course), a big salad, and the rolls!!
My least favorite side is probably the green bean casserole, which is why I don’t ever make it. I know everyone loves green bean casserole, but I don’t know 🤷🏻♀️ I just feel like there are so many better vegetables/sides!
And then the desserts! My mom’s chocolate chip cookie pie. And those brown sugar maple cookies I made the other week.
q: How do you find motivation?
a: For me, it’s pretty easy. I really love what I do! I love sharing recipes, photos, and stories with you guys. and I love being able to help you solve the “what to cook tonight” problem. So really it’s you guys that keep me motivated. Seeing everyone make the recipes I post, and reading all the comments you leave drives me to continue to create more. I always take the time to read your comments, emails, and messages so I know what you guys want/need. And then, I’m just weird and I honestly love working. I can’t sit still ever.
q: Where does Asher get her clothes?
a: She’s a hardcore Zara Kids shopper. Or my closet. She’s only 12, but every time she’s at my house, she’s dressing up in my clothes.
5. Meet the newest little Gerard.
Yep, you all read that correctly, there is a new little Gerard that we’re welcoming into the family!!
You know that trip my parents have been on now for well over a week now? Well, this wasn’t just any trip to Texas. They’ve spent the week there adopting our new little brother…Oslo James Gerard. He’s now two weeks old and even though I haven’t met the little guy just yet, I’m so excited to have yet another brother. Oslo is going to be so well-loved and I really can’t wait to meet him next week!!
To rewind a little, my parents have been trying to adopt for over two years now. It’s something they’ve wanted to do for a long time. Anyone who knows my mom knows she’s the most loving, caring woman out there. She truly loves raising her kids. Over the last few years, she grown increasingly passionate about helping mothers with an opioid addiction and drug-exposed infants. They tried working within the foster care system, but unfortunately, it can be flawed and difficult. There are a lot of good people who are trying their best, but they were never able to find a way to help.
So about 6 months ago they decided to go right to adoption, vs foster to adopt. They worked with several agencies, but their favorite by far, and the one they ended up receiving Oslo through, is called Special Angels. I encourage anyone looking to donate to an organization that benefits children to look into Special Angels. The agency is run by truly amazing people who create beautiful families. We are all so happy and excited to finally welcome our little brother home this week. More to come!
My parents have been staying in the cutest little renovated farmhouse in Waco, Texas, My 100 Year Old Waco Home, while finalizing the adoption. My mom said it was the coziest, most enjoyable place she ever could have hoped to bring Oslo home to. Plus it was equipped with everything she needed. If you check out the pics in the link you will see why. They really enjoyed their first week with baby Oslo there.
My dad returned on Friday night, but my mom has to stay in Texas a little longer until all the paperwork clears. My cousin Abby flew into Austin to be with Mom and the baby. Abby’s been sending photo after photo of little Oslo.
And guys? He’s the sweetest little baby. Sharing a few photos below, but more to come once I finally get to meet little Oslo James.
6. Snow Day Fun + Halloweeen.
Asher was a 60’s Cheerleader for Halloween! She put the entire costume together and did her makeup all by herself. So impressed!
We’ve had so much fun this week!

You have such a beautiful blog! Thank you!
Thank you Tammy! xTieghan
Tips & Tricks: have a plan!!! I have a Holiday Book that has every Thanksgiving & Christmas over the last 20
years. (I know, right?!) I cannot live without the Thanksgiving plan which counts backwards front before time we want to eat to the very first step, usually making & freezing the cornbread for the dressing. I balance meat eaters with my vegetarian needs. The actual two hours prior to the meal have the most entries but I do ALOT of prep work so I can socialize as well. It totally takes out the stress of planning, cooking & serving a meal with high expectations!
Oh wow! That sounds like it helps a lot and I am glad it takes the stress out of the day! Thank you for sharing, Dale! xTieghan
Oh my goodness what a big surprise!! Congratulations to all of you on the adoption of the newest Gerard. He is so cute! That little boy will be so loved by you all. What a Blessing for him to get in a lovable family. Thanks for sharing and looking forward to more pictures.
Thank you so much Charlotte! We are so excited and so happy he is apart of our family!! xTieghan
Thanksgiving tip: Name what matters. If you don’t care about green bean casserole then don’t spend all day making one. Prioritize what you want, and then either skip or buy the others.
Thank you Hilary! xTieghan
I don’t know the nature of your partnership with the every girl but the rampant diet culture in their posts makes me feel sad that you’re connected with them. The Trader Joe’s one you linked to seems to confuse “healthy” with low carb and/or low calorie. I wouldn’t want my younger sibling thinking that “healthy” meant restriction above flavor or enjoyment, and I know that the philosophy of your blog is anything but what the every girl so frequently promotes.
Hi Erin! I apologize you feel this way. Myself and family members have tried many of the Trader Joes picks and find them really tasty. Also, they are great for a meal without any leftovers (which I have been asked about) and that is why I wanted to share them with you all. I really do appreciate you taking the time to talk to me about this! xTieghan
Oh so much great stuff in this post! I always love these posts but how can Oslo not top everything?! He is so cute and can’t wait till you post more pictures, Asher is going to be such a sweet big sister & little mama to him!
I made your creamy vegetable tortellini soup this past week and we loved it! I am always a fan of soups but my husband is a bit harder to win over with soup but he declared it a must have again.
In this strange Covid life we are hosting our first Thanksgiving with a few family members. We are thinking we may go a bit ‘non-traditional’ but struggling with the menu. I would love to do a fun different take on the same Thanksgiving flavors but in light/appetizer feel (maybe less pressure?). Looking forward to your Thanksgiving posts coming up.
He totally does top everything!! I cannot wait to meet the little guy! I am really glad you have been enjoying my recipes, Becca! Thank you so much! xTieghan
Thank you for your lovely breezy post. I’ll be alone for the holidays due to COVID and have been dreading this season. You’ve reminded me to focus on the blessings and not on what’s missing.
Oslo is precious & ‘Holidate’ was a happy escape.
Thank you so much Terry! xTieghan
Congratulations to You and Your Family on the arrival of your New Baby Brother!
Thank you Frances! xTieghan
Congrats on the new baby brother!! He’s adorable!
Thank you Olivia! xTieghan
Congratulations on your new brother! Adoption is sooo special and that is one lucky boy.
It truly is! We are so happy that he is apart of the family! Thank you Morgan! xTieghan
Oslo!!! Congratulations to the entire family….lots of love to him. Such a happy post this Sunday!
Thank you so much Mary El! xTieghan
Oh my gosh, a new brother! So excited for you all!!!! Your parents are so amazing. I just had my first child 5 months ago 😉
Was just wondering what size you typically wear in Zara? Do their pants run true to size or smaller? I typically like my clothing to be oversized so I’ve avoided ordering things forever because I’m unsure of sizing even with their size helper haha.
Hi Carolyn! Thank you so much, we are all so excited!! Also, I think that Zara typically runs a tab bigger than normal.. and it is definitely made for taller people.. just to keep in mind! Sometimes I need to get the pants tailored to be shorter. If you like it oversized, I think you should be okay ordering your regular size! xTieghan
After a morning of making sugar flowers, foliage and berries, I made your French onion and mushroom soup, which was delicious, whilst sitting and reading your blog today, a perfect Sunday so far for a wet and windy day here in the UK. And, congratulations on your new little baby brother who looks so cute and precious. I am also loving your snowy scenery photos, I hope that we get snow here this winter. Unfortunately we are a few days away from a second lockdown which whilst this gives me a heavy heart I am trying to stay positive. Your daily and weekly blog posts with news and new recipes to try will certainly keep my spirits up through November.
Hi Colleen! I am really happy you loved the French onion soup, hopefully it is keeping you warm and cozy! I am sorry to hear about another lockdown, I hope everyone is doing okay during this time! Stay safe! xTieghan
Welcome Oslo…congratulations to you all!!! And God bless your parents for opening their hearts, home and family to this little blessing.
Thank you so much Diane! They could not be happier to be able to finally adopt him! xTieghan
Love your blog. I need a new cutting board. Which one is your favorite? I remember you gave this recommendation in one of your newsletters but I forget the brand. Thanks.
Hey Colette,
Thanks so much:) I love John Boos cutting boards! Please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
Love Oslo! Thanksgiving idea – There are a lot of us celebrating Thanksgiving solo this year or just two people, would love to see some tips/a plan for a smaller scale celebration.
Thank you so much Grace! xTieghan
Being a teacher I see such a great need for these little one to be truly loved and cared for by a great family like yours!
I think of all the joy Oslo and you will have as the days go by.
We are so happy! Thank you so much Nancy! xTieghan
Your blog is amazing! I don’t know how you put it together every week…it is packed with info, tips and pics. I live part time around the corner from you. I love your cookbook, and asking for the 2nd one for Christmas. I need ideas for side dishes at Thanksgiving, we have traditional Turkey, and since we’re from Houston, we make oyster dressing. Thank you for all of your hard work, I love it!
Oh how fun! I am really glad you are enjoying my recipes and book, Sandra! Thank you so much!! xTieghan
I am a faithful reader of your 9 favourite things post and this was the best!! Wow! Reading about your parents adopting Oslo and the organization behind it truly warmed my heart. You have the most unique family, and I mean that in the most positive way. You all have an interesting story and you are so close! I love this. It’s no wonder you are who you are having your Mom and Dad as role models and a house that oozes love for one another. I can’t wait to see more photos of Oslo when he comes home. He is one lucky boy being brought into your family! Be well!!
Oh – and I live in Western Canada and we had a fabulous Halloween! We built a candy “chute” to send candy down to the kids and it was a huge hit! In fact, this might have been the most fun Halloween! Seeing all the creative ways that people came up with to hand out candy in a safe way was really fun!
Hi Caroline! Thank you so much for this. It was so sweet to read how others view our family! We definitely are very tight knit and I love it! Also, LOVE that you built a candy chute.. how creative!! xTieghan
I love this site, but I think you’re overdoing it on “cozy.” Can we go one day without this word?
I so love your Sunday blog. I look forward to it every week, especially now when we all need pretty things to look at and the comfort of knowing you’re sharing this to all your “friends” around the world! thank you so very much!!
Several years ago my oven died about 2 months before Thanksgiving. I decided to purchase a counter top french door oven before figuring out all new appliances to match new stove/oven. The dilemma was then how to roast a turkey with company coming? I pre-ordered an organic turkey from Sprouts a full 2 weeks ahead and requested they cut it up like you would cut up a chicken! It was the easiest – and probably best – turkey I ever made. I think the reason it was so good was because I could cook the white and dark meats separately, to perfect temps! (This might help those with smaller gatherings this year.)
Perhaps the best part was that when I went to pick it up the day before Thanksgiving, it wasn’t ready so they prepared it while I waited and then didn’t charge me for it!
CONGRATS ON YOUR NEW BABY BROTHER! Let’s see, Asher is 13 years younger than you….Oslo is 12 years younger than Asher…is there a trend?
Hi Terry! Wow this is a great idea and I am sure so many will appreciate this for smaller gatherings! Thank you for sharing! Also, we are so excited to have in as a part of our family!! And not too much of a trend haha.. I still have two brothers in between me and Asher! xTieghan
A huge congratulations to you and your family on your new baby brother! That is so exciting and I can’t wait for you to meet him in person!
Thank you so much Lexi! I am so excited!! xTieghan
Can you also do something for small scale thanksgiving? This is my and my partner’s first thanksgiving on our own (#thankscovid).
I will definitely try! Thank you Ally! xTieghan
Congratulations on your family’s new addition! Oslo is adorable and couldn’t be joining a better family…lucky kid! So fun that you and Asher have been enjoying the week together. She’s the cutest.
Thank you so much Mikaela! xTieghan
Congrats on the new baby brother! That’s so incredible that your parents would do that.
But… what about that puppy your sister is hanging out with!!! Where are the doggie details! I’d be here for that 🙂
Hi Leanne! That is Merle.. Our family dog/ Asher’s dog! He is a few years old and a mini Australian Shepherd! xTieghan
Can you tell me where you purchased the crocks for the french onion and mushroom soup.
I’d like to make the soup in the crocks!
Thank you!

One of the best 9 Favorite Things yet! Congratulations and wish you and your family so much love and happiness! Thanks so much for sharing and providing another inspirational post!
Thank you Megan! We could not be happier! xTieghan
What I will be looking for in the coming weeks are Thanksgiving ideas for all of us who cannot travel or be with family during the holidays. There are only two of us, so cooking a big thanksgiving dinner is not an option, however, we still want some of the traditional holiday goodies. Turkey breast is not an option for us, as we think all poultry breasts are just dry dust. We will cook a turkey, but what else can we do that will not overwhelm us?
Hey Mary,
I will definitely be sharing all of my ideas throughout November especially for a smaller crowd. But, I think you should stick with the foods that you only really LOVE and skip everything else:) xTieghan
Congratulations to your family!! I have been following and making your recipes for a while and just recently started reading all your favorite things blog posts. This is by far the best one. Of course little Oslo kinda stole my attention. I love this story so much and hope to see updates on him as your family sees fit.
Thank you so much Kim! And totally understandable.. he is the cutest!! xTieghan
Congrats on your new baby brother! We are in the final stages of adopting our sweet little boy who will be our 6th. We are adopting from foster care a long and painful journey for all involved. There is a 9 year gap between him and our youngest. Your parents are amazing!
Aw congratulations, Jess! That is so amazing! Thank you! xTieghan
Congratulations on the new family addition!!
Holidate was a great cute escape of a movie!
Thank you Emilie! xTieghan
You’re Halloween sounded perfect. That was exactly our plan until our neighbor decided to have an outdoor magic show and fireworks.. so we had to put on clothes with zippers and buttons. The kids had a blast..
Congratulations on the baby brother.. he is adorable.
Aw that is so fun!! And I am sure your kids loved it! Thank you so much Hena! xTieghan
Congratulations on your new baby brother! 💙 What a great family to join. Can’t wait to see all the baby pics.
Thank you so much Tammy! xTieghan
I truly enjoyed this post. You covered nearly every food, fashion, & home interest. Congratulations on your newest family member!
Thank you so much Tawny! xTieghan
Congratulations on the new addition to the family, so precious!
Thank you Jayme! xTieghan
Congratulations on the new addition to the family, so precious!
Love all of these!!!
Can’t wait to see your Thanksgiving menu. <3
I always bring the cranberry sauce –it was something my grandma made that was my absolute favorite. She was pretty plain though…. Just cranberries and sugar! I like to splash in some spiced rum and a dash of apple pie spice. 😉 Why should eggnog get to have all the fun!?
Many congrats to your family! What a special time. 🙂
Thank you so much Carole!! xTieghan
Congratulations on baby Oslo! What a special family you have.
Turns out we’ll be having about 10 (Covid tested) family visiting us for Thanksgiving – so looks like i’ll be cooking! Looking forward to your recipes.
Can I ask one question? Your thoughts on turkey: Frwsh, wild, organic, traditional Butterball? If ordering i know i have to get in the order early.
thanks again!
PS Made your Coder & beer braised chicken for dinner last night. WOW!! Delicious!
Hey David,
Thanks so much for your kind message! I prefer to buy organic turkey from Whole Foods. Please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
What a blessing for your family!! Oslo is so cute and will be one loved little boy! You’re Parents are amazing!
I made your Creamy Vegetable Tortellini Soup twice now, and your Coq au Vin with just two chicken thighs following your stove top instructions. Both recipes are so delicious and easy for the cold and snowy days we are starting to have in CT. I do agree with others posts about more suggestions for the downsized Thanksgiving since my Husband and I will be alone that day. But don’t listen to the comment on “too much cozy”!!! How could that be possible!!!! In this chaotic world right now with Winter approaching, I can’t even believe that someone could feel and communicate such a statement.
Jackie
Thank you so much Jackie! I am really glad you have been enjoying my recipes! I hope you have an amazing and cozy week haha! xTieghan
Congratulations on your new baby brother! He is beautiful!
Thank you so much Megan! xTieghan
Hi Tieghan! here’s my thanksgiving question. I LOVE making and eating appetizers. All kinds. Famous for it. So I’m always asked to bring one to a gathering. The problem with thanksgiving apps, is if you’re not hosting you have to bring something ready to just drop on a table. Because the host’s kitchen is likely already full – stuffs warming in the oven, all the burners are full, etc. Even crockpot items can be difficult to bring, because you don’t know if there’s space for a crockpot and also it takes time to reheat again when you’re traveling with it!
So.. my question is.. what ideas ya got for me?? 🙂 Lol, thanks so much!
Hey Lauren,
Here’s some appetizer ideas that will be ready to serve once at your destination:

OH AND PS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART, congratulations and best wishes to your family!! ❤️❤️
Congratulations on the new baby brother!!! how very exciting ! Question- I am considering investing in the all clad roasting pan, but unsure of what size I should get. we often never have over 12 (adults) for holidays. I plan to use it for prime rib, roasting vegetables and of course this year’s turkey. Do you have the smaller or the larger one? Appreciate your feedback!
Hey Pam,
Thank you so very much for your kind message! I would go with the large. Please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
Oslo is so tiny! Looking forward to seeing more about the little one. Xx
He is! And so cute! Thank you Kelly! xTieghan
Wow, what an amazing story about how little Oslo joined your family! Your parents have such big hearts! Such a blessing for the whole family
It is! Thank you so much Julie!! xTieghan
Congrats on your baby brother!! I am from Oslo (Norway) so I do love the name 🙂 Is there a specific reason they named him Oslo?
Thank you so much Henny! That is so fun that you are from there! There is no real reasoning behind it.. We all just loved the name and it is unique! xTieghan
I want to join your newsletter distribution. Your life sounds so exciting. I thought Oslo was your sweet baby boy. I can’t wait to start trying some of your recipes. Keep doing what you love.
Jeannie H
Hey Mary Jean,
