5 Minute Chocolate Cinnamon Sugar Toast.
5 Minute Chocolate Cinnamon Sugar Toast…the quick fix dessert we’re all in need of from time to time. Made using a good amount of cinnamon, a touch of sugar, and a bit of chocolate, for an extra special cinnamon sugar toast. It’s beyond delicious and the easiest to make. Every toasted sandwich is soft, buttery, and full of melted chocolate inside, and crisp and caramelized edges on the outside…with just the right amount of cinnamon sugar. ‘Tis heavenly.
Do you remember all those times the last few weeks that I said I was really into “old-school” or retro-style recipes? Well, this might just be my favorite yet. And it’s not that this is really “old-school”, but man these sandwiches remind me of being a kid in Cleveland.
A good Saturday morning meant dad was making his cinnamon sugar toast, which yes was just cinnamon, sugar, and toast…but with a good amount of butter. My dad’s cinnamon toast was my absolute favorite. Sure, I might be remembering it better than it was, but does it matter. It was delicious, and my favorite thing to wake up to come Saturday morning. I would imagine a lot of you can probably relate?
Cinnamon toast is such a classic. It’s one of those childhood comfort foods I will never stop loving…which brings me today.
Honestly, this sandwich requires no recipe, but then it does. Because while it’s just four ingredients, it really is one of the best things you can make this week. So I wanted to be sure to bring it to everyone’s attention.
I first started making this years ago…after not the best day, and I’ve continued to make them all these years later.
The FAST Details
My dad made his cinnamon toast simply with soft whole grain bread, butter, and homemade cinnamon sugar…which yes, is just cinnamon and sugar mixed together. The key was the soft bread. He used good ole’ whole wheat bread, the kind your mom would make you peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on. It’s got to be soft.
And then, of course, butter – and lots of it, coupled with plenty of cinnamon sugar. Dad made his best pieces of cinnamon toast with just a smidge too much butter. The butter would stay in a puddle with the cinnamon sugar on top? Oh my gosh, it made for the best bite of toast.
Beyond good.
So, I took my dad’s exact idea for cinnamon toast and I made a chocolate sandwich out of it. My only addition? Chocolate. Right there in the center.
And you know something, I know it’s simple, and I know this concept is not overly creative, but something about this recipe is just so special. And SO DELICIOUS.
The outside edges of the bread caramelize in the skillet, but the middle stays soft and buttery. Then, all the chocolate in the center of each sandwich melts into a puddle of molten chocolate goodness.
It is every bit as delicious as it sounds. A really great treat that can be made in just minutes. And at any time of day…breakfast, lunch, after dinner, and definitely late night. It’s always good…and I will not lie, an extra dusting of cinnamon sugar will make everything even better.
So what do you guys think? A little 5 minute Tuesday treat? Yep, it’s a good idea!

Cinnamon toast always brings me such great memories of childhood…whenever I eat it I’m instantly returned to my grandmas kitchen..great idea to add chocolate.
Thanks!! Cinnamon toast has great memories for as all it seems!
AHHHHHHHHH this is heaven right here. HEAVEN!
Thanks Katrina!
Eee!! Gooey, melt-y, chocolate-y heaven right there! Dying over how amazing this toast looks, Tieghan. Perfect Friday food! pinned!
Thanks Sarah!! Hope you have a great weekend!
I had the same issue with macarons! Each time the batter turned out perfect and the macarons developed a nice, shiny shell and I was so happy BUT just after 4 minutes in the oven they began to crack! Ahhhh. That killed me. Eventually, lowering the oven temperature dramatically and letting the macarons dry for a much longer time solved this issue for me. If your macarons did develop a nice, dry shell then it’s probably the high oven temperature that kills them (humidity is bad for macarons). But with macarons… you can never know for sure 🙂 Don’t give up! I hope your weekend will be relaxing and fun 🙂
Thank you so much for that tip! I will try it tomorrow!!
Thanks so much, Shiran!
Chocolate + Breakfast = Heaven. I’m in.

Macarons are a continual challenge for me as well. My daughter has actually had more success than me. Anything with sugar and cinnamon – my fave.
I am happy to say I got them right today! FINALLY!
Thanks so much, Liz!
Holy crap…this looks SO good 😉 I am thinking that this would make an awesome bedtime snack!!
Oh such a good bedtime snack!! Thanks!!
This. Is. Amazing. Totally agree, Tieghan — sometimes you just gotta go for the simple, 5-minute joys. Cinnamon toast was my absolute fav as a kid — putting chocolate in it?! SO genius. Love this.
Thank you so much!!! Sometimes the simplest things are just what we need!! 🙂
Have a great weekend!
Oh and I red your interview on Food and Wine. Congrats!! It was awesome!
This is brilliant. Since this uses ingredients I always have on hand, I’ll never again have to succumb to the last resort of eating plain chocolate chips when the chocolate cravings strike! Thanks for the idea! I hope you have a relaxing weekend after what sounds like quite a frustrating week 🙂
Thanks so much! Hope you have a great weekend!
Mmmm…chocolate sandwich! Never tried it with cinnamon though!
It’s a must try them!! Thanks Haley!

Cinnamon toast is one of my favorite breakfasts and late night snacks- I can’t believe I never thought of adding chocolate! Totally doing that next time!
Thanks Faith!
Tieghan I know that feeling. Today while eating milk and cereal I started day dreaming and suddenly milk and cereal bowl fell all over. Literally. Worst day start lol!
Chocolate always helps!
Oh man!! Hope your weekend is great!!
Thanks!
Oh man–I’ve had those kind of days. So frustrating. I still have yet to make macarons! It is the one classic French dessert that I never made in culinary school (and never have attempted at home). I really want to try them though.
I’m wondering whether the altitude and humidity level is causing that to happen? I would suggest letting them dry out a bit more?
I got the macarons down on Friday. Thank god!!
Thanks Laura!
gosh i love to try it… must buy the ingredients.
Thank you!
I have a love/hate relationship with macarons. When they turn out perfectly I want to high-five everyone I see…when they don’t I usually throw them in the trash as aggressively as I can and swear a little bit.
Sometimes a simple reset it what you need!
I got the macarons and Friday and jumped for joy!! But trust me, on Thursday I did the whole swearing into the trash thing…
Oh yes, I need this toast in my life! Love! Sorry about the macarons, they can be notoriously tricky. Did you test your oven temp? Doubling up on baking sheets can help too. Sometimes you just have to take a break & then come back to it later!
I got the macarons to turn out awesome on Friday. YA!!
I will try your tips though! Thanks Laura!
Oh my gosh! This looks amazing! What a great idea for the days you need something simple but incredible! Pinned!
Thanks Cate!
What a clever recipe! Simple, yet decadent. I love it! Pinned.
Thank you!
I just found my new favorite breakfast!
Thanks so much!
I got really confused in your post when you wrote “macaroons” because I feel like macaroons are super easy to make. Then I realized you meant macarons and I was like ohhhhh yes those little tricky things 🙂
Oops, sorry! I missed that error!
They are super tricky, but I think I figured them out. Or I hope I did!
OMG I hate those days. They’re the worst! But this toast is something that would make me feel better for sure!!
I know, they are!! Thanks Dorothy!
I have a macaron tutorial on my site. A few tips: I’m assuming you let them rest before piping. Make sure not to let them rest too long because the batter could dry out. Also, if your baking sheets are thin, they’ll get too hot. Double up the sheets for some extra insulation. Good luck on your next batch!
That cinnamon toast looks killer. I’ll take two, please.
Thanks for the tips!! I actually got them the other day, few!!
Thanks again!
Could I make this with Nutella or the Hershey’s chocolate spread? It seems to me that it would be easier to spread and put in the pan than chocolate pieces or chips.
Yup! You can! Hope you love this!
Saw this recipe linked on Imgur soon after I woke up this morning. 30 minutes later (once I could get my butt out of bed) and I had the gooiest, crunchiest breakfast. So simple and satisfying. Thanks for sharing!
Oh. My. Gosh. So easy, and yet so delicious. It tastes like it should be some expensive chocolate pastry, what with the melty chocolate inside, and yet it is made with the ingredients of good ol’ cinnamon toast with a few chocolate chips. And it’s so easy! Sorcery, my friends. It must be sorcery. Yummy, gooey, tasty sorcery.
WOW!! Haha! SO nice! I’m SO happy you liked my sorcery! Lol! Thank you Elle!
This is too funny! We’re on the same wavelength!! I was craving *my* dad’s cinnamon sugar toast (he used to keep a shaker of cinnamon sugar in the cupboard at all times), but I didn’t have any bread on hand the other night – travesty! I made almost this exact thing, but in “quesadilla” form – I heated a touch of coconut oil in a skillet, dropped in a flour tortilla, put some milk chocolate inside, and folded it over. 2-3 minutes per side to toast the tortilla, and then I sprinkled the whole thing with cinnamon sugar. Pure comfort food!!
Hey Kate,
Lol love this! That sounds equally as delicious, let me know if you give this recipe as try as well:) xTieghan
And, yes Teighan, well made cinnamon toast with enough butter and enough cinnamon so you can taste it, is still one of the best childhood tastes of all time. We would put it under the broiler.
Thanks so much Carol!!
The comments are from may 2nd of 2014.🤔
Hey Ellen,
That is because this was a very old recipe of mine that I remade and improved. I hope you love it! xTieghan
Delish! Made this morning!

I am delighted that this recipe was enjoyed, thanks so much for giving it a try! xTieghan
Yum!! I’d totally do this with Nutella in the middle.
That would also be fantastic!!
What a brilliant concept, a grilled chocolate sandwich. Oh the possibilities are endless. Add banana, peanut butter or caramel. Thank you for the inspiration and a fun decadent and rebellious way to get a gooey chocolate fix.
Thanks so much Aimee!
Wow! These bring back such good childhood memories! Will definitely be trying soon as a late night snack!
Thanks so much Elaine!!
Omg this looks incredible! I have all of these ingredients and will be making today!
Thanks Leah, I hope you love it!!
Good Lord,I can’t stop drooling(and Im only looking at the pictures). Can’t wait to try this!!
Lol thanks so much!!
Sprinkle mozzarella for a chocolate grilled cheese. Sounds weird but chocolate and cheese quesadilla or grilled cheese are amazing! (Mild flavored mozzarella is key)
Hey April,

I made this for my son and me today for a birthday breakfast, and I added peanut butter to the filling. OMG. New favorite!
Hey Anne,
Awesome! I am thrilled that this recipe was enjoyed, thanks for making it! Happy Friday:) xTieghan
I would have listed a photo of the results but there was nothing left but tiny crumbs. This is both great comfort food and dessert and something so easy to make as well. No one has said no to this, and everyone has been silent while eating it, other than a few sounds of ecstasy. . And if you really want it a little more of more, scoop of vanilla ice cream on top when it’s just out of the pan, toast crispy and chocolate gooey.
Hey Margaret,
So so glad this recipe was enjoyed, thanks a bunch for giving it a try! Happy Sunday:) xTieghan
Fantastic what a fun delicious recipe. Enjoyed with fresh fruit and Cappuccino this morning.
