Nine Favorite Things.
Welcome to this week’s Nine Favorite Things.
Anyone else very excited for spring, a new season, and all the fresh blooming flowers? It’s of course still cold here. Actually, we are in the midst of a snowstorm. But I just put in an order for fresh flowers from Terrain and I cannot wait for them to get here this week. I’ve officially hit that time of year where I need to surround myself with pretty spring flowers in an effort to keep myself inspired. The bright, happy colors always help on these cold snowy days.
Speaking of flowers, it’s also that time of year to start planning and prepping our summer gardens. Because it gets so chilly here at night, even during the summer, we need to use a greenhouse to keep everything warm. So far, we’ve really only had success growing herbs at this altitude. But this year I really want to incorporate fresh flowers into the mix for both inside the greenhouse and outside. Last summer I shared my dream garden inspiration with you guys. I’m attempting to slowly put plans in place to make some of those things a reality this summer. Fingers crossed! Gardens are so much work, but the outcome can be so rewarding!
Question: Anyone else currently planning their spring/summer gardens? It’s crazy that it’s already that time of year!
Let’s see, what else. My family spent some time in Aspen this week to watch Red compete in the 2021 World Championships which goes towards world rankings. Next week will be the first Olympic qualifying event for the upcoming 2022 Winter Olympics. SO INSANE that it’s already time to start thinking about the next Winter Olympics. It feels like not that long ago we were all in Korea cheering Red on. Hard to believe three years have passed, but you know, time really does fly. He just missed the podium on Friday (by .1 point), you win some, you lose some. But he’s still sitting in first place in terms of World Rankings so that’s all good. I think I’m more nervous for the kid than he is. I am always so impressed by his ability to handle the pressure and block out all the noise.
In other news, I’m looking forward to heading to California at the end of the month. It’s so nice to see things slowly starting to re-open. I know things aren’t really normal (will they ever be?). But fingers crossed for some brighter months ahead…literally. My cousin’s wedding (it’s very small) is going to be in Julian, CA at Sacred Mountain and since I’m heading that way, I’m also going to make a stop in LA for a shoot with The Little Market and a quick stop to see the Home & Family crew. It’s been over a year, so I feel like I’m a little “rusty”. Nervous, but excited at the same time. I’ve definitely been in the snow for a little too long…
And that’s kind of that. Honestly, nothing all too exciting to report. Just plenty of plotting and planning for some studio and home updates. then the usual cooking, shooting, writing, and attempting to juggle one too many tasks…but nothing new there.
Oh! There is one kind of exciting piece of news. We are SO close to launching the new HBH site and it’s looking so good. I can’t wait to share it with you guys. The hope is that we’ve made improvements to help the site work better for YOU. So mainly adjustments to the recipe page and a new fresh look. We’ve had the same site design for years, so the refresh is going to be fun.
The other thing we’ve been putting together behind the scenes is a brand guide and I wanted to ask you guys a question….
Question: How would you describe the HBH brand?
I know what my response would be, but we’re curious to hear how you guys would best describe HBH as a whole? Please, let us know! Excited to read your thoughts!
Coming up this week, a new pasta that’s simple but great for spring (hello to lots of fresh basil). A new chocolate dessert that will be fun for Easter. A fun sandwich for St.Patrick’s Day. Hopefully, a new salad that I’ve been working to perfect. And then something springy for Friday, and maybe even a new cocktail too!
Question: any new recipes you’d love to see for spring? Always love to hear your suggestions!
1. Things I’m Loving, Wanting, and Excited To Try…
watching…Ginny and Georgia on Netflix per my cousin’s suggestion. Have you watched it yet? And also Fire Fly Lane? Starting Ginny and Georgia tonight!
cooking…homemade naan. Just what snowy weekends need the most.
reading…Into the Gloss with Leanne Ford. I am obsessed with everything Leanne does, so I love this interview with her. It was my favorite piece of content I’ve read in a while.
loving…Drunk Elephant. I was sent some of their products to try out and am obsessed with their Babyfacial face mask. Have you tried it?
watching…Oprah’s Next Big Interview with Chip and Joanna Gaines….I’m going to be honest, I didn’t watch the royals interview because I’ve never understood the obsession with the royal family. But this is an interview I am so excited about. I have so much respect for the brand that Chip and Joanna Gaines have created. I’m looking forward to learning more about them, their businesses, and how they manage it all.
loving…new pieces from Food 52. Currently in my cart are these scallops plates, blue speckled bowls, blue speckled baking dish, and these handthrown rustic ceramic dishes.
listening to…Rupert Grint on Armchair Expert. This is the only interview I’ve listened to from a Harry Potter cast member. I feel like they are super hard to come by? Either way, I loved this…but I am obsessed with HP, so probably a little biased in my opinion. Who else is a fan?!
loving…Seed Probiotics. I’ve been looking for a good probiotic and am really loving these so far.
ordered…this Staud dress for the wedding. It’s cute, BUT I feel like I am going to be cold. I’d add tights, boots, and a coat, but still…I’m not sure. Thoughts?
loving…the new Staub Sage Green collection. Such a fun color!
excited to try…meditation. So, I’ll be the first to tell you that I’ve never ever thought of myself as someone who could ever mediate. Nor did I fully believe in meditation. But after following Melissa Wood Health for the past few months, she has convinced me otherwise. I did one of her 10 minutes guided meditations the other day. And while I really can’t say I felt any calmer or differently, it is something I want to try to explore a bit more. I’m always go, go, go, and high anxiety. So I figure this is worth a shot to help center me and even to help me to work through my day in a more efficient way. More to come on this.

4. Favorite Questions of The Week…
q: Was there ever a point when you considered giving up on HBH?
a: shockingly, no. I honestly can’t recall one. There have been so many times that’s it been really hard and all I wanted to do is crawl into bed and hide for days, but giving up on HBH has never been an option. I just can’t imagine it!!
q: One place you’d love to travel to?
a: Paris! Just because it’s on my “bucket” list. I’ve got to make it there someday! But also, Rome! And Greece! So many places I have never been. Oh, and Hawaii!! And NYC! I really, really miss the city!
q: How do you shop for ingredients living so remotely?
a: I am up in the mountains, but we’re lucky enough to have both a Whole Foods and a Kroger. So getting ingredients is not as hard as you’d think! Anything specialty I order on Amazon or Thrive Market. And I get my edible flowers from Gourmet Sweet Botanicals.
q: Do you wear perfume and if so what is your scent?
a: Nope! I actually really do not like perfume. It gives me a headache for some reason, so I stick to candles.
q: How do you film your Instagram stories?
a: just with my iPhone! It’s nothing fancy at all and half the time I’m balancing my phone up with something to hold it in place to get shots that require two hands. I finally invested in a tripod for my phone, but other than that my setup is not professional in any way.
q: What’s your sign?
a: virgo! But I don’t really read too much into signs…though I do fit the Virgo “profile”.
q: what’s always in your fridge?
a: carrots, broccoli, beets + Brussels sprouts, apples, pineapples + avocado, butter, cheese, goat milk, and too many condiments.
5. How to Revive Your Sad Looking Hydrangea Flowers.
We all know how much I enjoy having fresh flowers on the counter. And with spring approaching (and the snow not stopping) I’m left craving fresh blooms now more than ever. Sometimes I’ll get lucky and Whole Foods will get in ranunculus’, which are one of my favorite flowers, but it’s usually pretty hit or miss. Therefore, my favorite flowers to pick up from our local grocery store have become Hydrangeas. They’re pricier, but I’ve always loved their pretty blooms.
The not-so-great thing about Hydrangea? They can wilt pretty quickly. As in we put them in water and not even an hour later they look lifeless and so sad. After a little frustration on my end, I finally googled how to revive Hydrangeas and was taken to this article. The article tells you to soak the entire flower in water. At first, I was completely skeptical and never thought it would work. But because Hydrangeas take on water through their flowers and not just their stems, the trick actually works. I was AMAZED. It took a few hours to revive the blooms, but they currently look just as pretty as the day I bought them.
I’m not sure if any of you will be interested in this, but for those who are flower obsessed like me, read on!
Here is how I did it….
Step One: trim the stems on a sharp angle to allow more water to be soaked up.
Step Two: fill the sink with water and submerge the stems and flowers. Fully submerge them too! I know it feels odd but just try it.
Step Three: let the flowers soak for at least 15 minutes, but ideally longer. Mine took about 3 hours to fully come back to life, so give your flowers time. Patience is key here.
Step Four: shake the water off the flowers, then put them in a vase filled with warm water. Enjoy your fresh perky blooms!
To maintain their freshness, I’ve been spritzing them generously with water twice a day and it’s working like a charm. We’re going on a week now of fresh-looking Hydrangeas…yay!

Good luck and have fun with the upcoming trip! A little vitamin D sounds so good right now in the middle of this storm! Describing HBH is hard because there’s so much content from the years. Overall I would say whole-ingredient comfort food packed with unique flavors with cozy mountain lifestyle thrown in. 🙂
And future recipes: loving the quickbreads! Maybe easy camping food for summer, like 1-skillet cast iron meals.
Hey Ashleigh,
Thanks a bunch for reading today! Yes, can’t wait for a little warm weather:) Love the camping ideas! Happy Sunday! xTieghan
I just want to tell you that I love drinking my coffee and reading “nine favorite things” every Sunday. It’s a fun way to start my day. Thank you for taking the time to put it together
Thanks so much for reading along:) Happy Sunday! xTieghan
My daughter and I LOVE all your recipes!! You are so generous with sharing them on-line. I find your videos so helpful!! We do own two of your cookbooks. We are on a mission to make as many of your recipes as we can since we are eating at home due to COVID. Everything we’ve tried is amazing!! The highlight of my week is reading your Nine Favorite Things. I saw your link for air fryer recipes. The recipes looked good. I received one recently, but not sure if I’m going to keep it. What do you think about air fryers? Thanks for inspiring us to cook and bake!
Thanks!
Hey Amy,
Thanks so much for reading along! I am so glad you and your daughter have been loving the recipes. I actually just recently got an air-fryer, so still experimenting, but I’ll keep you posted! Happy Sunday. xTieghan
Love to see something using white beans, maybe in a dinner salad, maybe with crispy prosciutto. I so enjoy so many of your receipts, I cook at least 2 every week – and oldie and a new one. Look forward to what comes next!
Thanks so much for the recommendations Mary Jane, love these ideas! xTieghan
I love starting my Sunday with your weekly newsletter! I also love your family – the photos of Oslo are so adorable, Asher is my fashion icon and your brother Creighton is hilarious – keep it coming!!
I would describe the HBH brand as your one-stop-shop for rich, delicious, cozy recipes with a side of decorating and style inspo, beauty product recommendations, and a great dose of family.
Thank you for all that you do to make HBH awesome!!
Hey Paige,
Thanks for reading every Sunday:) I am so glad you enjoy the photos as much as I do. Thanks for making so many recipes and following along! xTieghan
half your “Favorite Spring Asparagus Recipes” are for spinach and artichokes. You do realize the difference, rignt?
Hey there,
I sure do! Just offering some other of my favorite spring time recipes as well. I hope you have the best Sunday! xTieghan
My daughter who is 9 asked what meal I had made, and I responded with one from a woman named Tieghan Gerard. She said “I know a snowboarder named Red Gerard” It made me chuckle, because first, she was 6 at the last winter olympics and remembered his name, and second, we hardly watch tv and she hasn’t watched any snowboarding since then, so the fact that she remembered him after all these years cracks me up!
Hey Jess,
Lol thanks so much for sharing this story, how cute of her to remember:) Have a great Sunday! xTieghan
I’d say the HBH look is clean and fresh (natural lighting, flowers as decorations, neutral colors besides the bright colors from food). And the brand perception is accessible- anyone can cook! I used to feel like I was a terrible cook and would never try to make half the things I’ve made with your cookbooks and website. But once I found HBH, it was different! The pictures of every step on the blog and with every recipe in the cookbooks is SOOOOO helpful for visual learners. And the easy to follow steps. Plus the variety of flavors and cuisines provides something for everyone.
Hey Mariah,
Thanks so much for reading along and your kind message. I am so glad you have been enjoying the recipes and find the pictures helpful. Happy Sunday! xTieghan
OK, to answer your question, to me, HBH is filled with wholesome and approachable recipes – and also very much about the photography! While I tend to stick to the healthier recipes here, I love me some food porn.
Going to watch Ginny & Georgia with my 13 year old and LOVED Firefly Lane. If you haven’t yet, Never Have I Ever is awesome, too- my 14 year old daughter and I loved that one. It was hilarious and relatable. I love shows that are about the not-so-popular kids because that’s so much more relatable for most. (Um, me.)
And I think you’ve just convinced me that I need more butter in my life.
Thanks for always brightening my Sunday mornings!
Hey Cassie,
Thanks for reading today! So glad to hear you loved Firefly Lane, definitely want to give that one a try. Also, thanks for the recommendation on Never Have I Ever. Have the best Sunday! xTieghan
Oslo is precious and I can see he is thriving with your family’s love. You always say your mom is amazing and I totally believe you!
Thanks so much for your kind message:) xTieghan
Tieghan I love your site and am constantly recommending your recipes and your brand to all of my friends and family–your cookbook is my go-to gift! I would describe your brand as colorful, cozy, simple and rustic recipes. I love that you have a mix of recipes and love what “healthy” means to you. Excited for everything that’s to come for you!
Hey Susan,
Thanks a bunch for your super kind message! I am so glad you have ben enjoying the recipes and appreciate you sharing the cookbook with your loved ones:) Have the best week! xTieghan
Broccoli should be stored the same way you prep flowers. Cut off a bit of the dried up base, then stand in a bowl of an inch or two of water. Celery should be wrapped in foil and placed in the crisper drawer. And yes, reuse the foil, it’s fine.
Thanks Kim!
HBH – you have such a fresh, youthful and comforting approach to life and cooking. I think your “brand” is awesome! I love your calm but enthusiastic approach to everything! Sometimes with other brands it feels like there is too much marketing involved with their partnerships but I never feel that way with HBH. Plus you make me want to fill my home with things I see in your studio. Thank you for all that you do and the way that you do it!!
Thanks so much for your feedback Mary Ann, I appreciate you reading along! xTieghan
The next time you purchase hydrangeas, try sprinkling some Alum in the water. You can find Alum in the spice section of the grocery store. It will keep your hydrangeas looking fresh and beautiful for a long time.
Thanks for the tip Patricia! xTieghan
Love, love, love the dress for the wedding. No to tights and boots. It will ruin the look.
Thanks so much Kim! xTieghan
My partner and I have patiently been waiting for March so that we could start planting seeds, which we have now done. I have planted tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, fennel, sage and sunflowers. I ordered a couple of dahlia tubers last month which arrived yesterday so I will be planting them in pots and keeping them indoors until April, then they can go outside. My partner has 3 seed trays containing a variety of vegetables. We don’t have a big garden so I’m not sure where he is planning to plant everything hahaha. I am also planning on getting a David Austin rose soon as well, as I love roses.
As for TV shows, I am planning on watching Fire Fly Lane and I have seen Ginny and Georgia advertised so I may watch this as well.
I hope that you enjoy your trip to CA later this month, the dress that you’ve chosen for the wedding is cute and very you. Will you accessorise with a bit of sparkle to finish the look?
Thank you not only for your wonderful recipes but also the tip for keeping cut hydrangeas fresh, I have a pink hydrangea growing in a planter outside my back door and I love when it blooms in the summer, so I will remember this advice also.
Have a good week 🙂
Hey Colleen,
Thanks a lot for reading along today. I love that you have already started on your garden, how awesome! I am very excited from Julian, thanks for your feedback on the dress, still working on the accessories! Have the best week:) xTieghan
Love reading your posts and trying your recipes- or using them as inspiration for my own version. Question- I have a nice Dutch oven that I love because it was a wedding gift to my parents (so it’s from the 60s) and looks great on my range but I find that it is often too small to use for many recipes. Can you tell me what size I should buy that will be a better size? I love the Staub one in your links this week but I need to check the size.
Hey Michelle,
Thanks for your kind message and reading along. I love my Staub 7 or 9 quart dutch ovens, I find usually the bigger the better, because you can always cook let in them if needed. I hope this helps! xTieghan
Hi and Happy Sunday! I would describe HBH as uplifting, down to earth, real meals for real families. I love getting to know you and your family through your blog. I love seeing your Instagram stories and posts. I love that your blog isn’t dedicated to one particular diet. The recipes that I have made are ones that I want to share with family and friends. I have read both of your cookbooks cover to cover and you have been a huge inspiration for me to start my blog (which is in the works!).
Hey Lynne,
Thanks for reading along today and sharing your feedback:) I appreciate you being here and making so many recipes. Have the best week! xTieghan
Love that dress for you! Only you could pull that off. I’m from San Diego, and Julian is a great spot! Gets quite chilly at night, though!
I just want to see more healthy-ish chicken recipes – something that I can whip up when I have boneless chicken thighs I need to use up with pantry ingredients.
Thanks so much Sara! I am very excited to visit Julian:) xTieghan
Fun to have a trip to plan and wedding to attend. Enjoy it all!
The HBH brand to me is fresh, natural, delicious, easy, pretty, cosy, approachable, with healthy recipes with a touch of decadence, which makes them doable. Xx
Thanks so much for your feedback Kelly-Jane! xTieghan
Oh my! I’m totally excited (beyond overwhelmed) by this latest March 14th HBH post! Let’s start with that dress for the wedding! It was made for you, and you’re going to look knock-out totally cool-chic! (Please post a picture for all of us!) I could see your beautiful hair tossed to be side, wearing a great pair of earrings! And for that ‘chill’ you might be feeling while wearing that hot little number? I could see you wrapping a shawl with a splash of color ver your shoulders.
Ok—- the foods and menu you posted are to-die-for—as usual.
The skin products and makeup – wonderful! And the way you write about everything going on in your life- and things you’re working on, suggestions and requests from your adoring fans—-well, you are one of the most sincere, down-to-earth, hard-working, talented and beautiful young woman I know.
Hey Barb,
Thanks so much for reading today! Lol your positive vibes on the dress are amazing! I loved your feedback today:) Have the best week! xTieghan
Happy Sunday, Tieghan! I would love your take on Beef Rendang. No idea if it’s truly springy, but you are so good with Asian food and spice blends, it seems a perfect match.
Thanks for the hydrangea tips! I picked some up from Trader Joe’s today thanks to your tips.
Hey Amy,
Thanks for the recipe suggestion, I will absolutely look into this! Have a great week. xTieghan
Hi! I love your cookbooks and just started following your website. I have been meaning to ask…I am allergic to barley and can’t drink beer. What can I substitute for the beer in your No-Knead Bread and Pizza Dough recipe?
Thanks!
Michelle
Hey Michelle,
Thanks so much for following along! Sparkling cider is a great substitute for the beer in those recipes. I hope this helps! xTieghan
Love your sunday post! OK but I’m so excited for you to go to Julian, Sacred Mountain is an awesome venue, but listen, YOU HAVE TO TRY THE PIE IN TOWN, at MOM’S, ok?? that’s it.
Hey Nelly,
Lol I have heard great things about the pie, so it is definitely on my list! xTieghan
I used your method and recipe for the tortilla portion of your tostadillas while making a Hello Fresh meal this week. It really added something extra to the meal. Thanks for the great idea!
So glad to hear this Sarah! xTieghan
I am an 80 year old young Grandma, who loves your website. I think of it as being titled “The Uplifted Life” because you aim to make the purpose of the subjects you cover so beautifully to uplift people. It doesn’t matter if it is a breathtaking picture of a recipe you have made, gorgeous plants or flowers, some special find you post about, Asher and Oslo’s precious pictures, great books to read, movies to watch, reminders to feel grateful, encouragement, appreciation and value of family, etc.Your website hits all the needed “feel-good” buttons! Thank you so much!
Hey Judy,
Thanks so much for reading along! I am so thankful for your feedback. I love that you enjoy my Sunday content as much as I do! xTieghan
I spy the mark of a true, get-in-there-and-really-cook, cook! The dreaded forearm burn/scar. Got a little too close to the heating element in your oven? Lol
Thanks for another great post!
Lol just a little! It happens far too often🤦🏻♀️ Thanks for reading Marianne! xTieghan
You asked about the brand. Here are the brand qualities I think of with HBH:
Outdoors; healthy; contemporary family; fun; mountains; creative. We live north of you near Kremmling and I talk you up all the time to people.
Hope that helps!
Thanks so much Pam:) xTieghan
Great content. So much to ponder! Thanks!!
Thanks so much Janet!
put hydrangeas in hot water in a vase, they will revive quickly
Thanks so much!!

Thanks Danelle
Hey Danelle,
Happy almost birthday!! Ohh so many ideas, but it helps to know what you like/don’t! You are welcome to send me an email and we can come up with some ideas! xTieghan

HBH Brand- happy, comforting, inspiring, encouraging, natural, positive, creative, community. Those are the words I think of 🙂
Thank you so very much Mary Caitlin! xTieghan
Hi Tieghan,
I also look forward to your THB newsletter.Have tried many of your recipes and they are just delicious.
Can’t wait to try some of the asparagus one’s you’ve just listed.
One thought for you…. You and your brand would be an excellent fit for Chip and Joanna’s new Magnolia network! You should pursue that.
Have you watched The Lost Kitchen yet? Just fabulous!
Hey Julie,
Thanks so much for reading along and your message! I’ve never watched The Lost Kitchen, but I will add to my list! xTieghan
I LOVE Drunk Elephant – I have some really crazy allergies (including essential oils, fragrance, cinnamon (I know, ahhhhhhh!!!!!) and sunscreen (yipes!)) and Drunk Elephant has been the only clean brand that keeps my skin from going completely off the rails. Love their Marula Oil and the Protini Cream – the Babyfacial is also super good!
Hey Susan,
So awesome that Drunk Elephant has worked so well for you, I am definitely loving their products! Have a great week! xTieghan
Little Otto is thinking: “Do I smell chocolate chip oatmeal cookie bars? If not, can we change that?!”
I would describe the HBH brand as AUTHENTIC and HOLISTIC. I have never thought you were creating an aesthetic just for likes or fans. I always felt you were true to who you are at your core. What you see is absolutely what you get, and that is so rare to come by today! Holistic bc HBH takes into account so many factors — time, ability, cost, location — and that is so necessary. It’s not just a recipe thrown out there.
And from one Reese’s cup lover to another, do yourself a favor and skip the all PB cups. Reviews have not been kind. Apparently the alleged PB coating doesn’t taste like PB at all. I’m going to stick to the good stuff — regular or dark chocolate. Have a great week – looking forward to the updated website soon!
Hey Jen,
Thanks for your thoughtful message and reading today. I love your feedback on HBH. Good to know about PB cups!! Have a great week:) xTieghan
Happy Friday! What comes to mind regarding your brand: Go-to comfort food, inspirational, homegrown, relatable, stylish and cozy … like having access to a lovely, rustic Inn all to myself for the weekend where I can cook delicious food and just enjoy the beauty all around. 🙂
Enjoy Julian! I live in San Diego and enjoy the scenic drive to Julian at least once a year!
Thanks so much for your feedback Joyce, this means to much to mean! Very excited for Julian, so I will keep you posted! xTieghan
I am definitely planning my garden already. I can’t wait! Something new to me, I am planning to try growing heirloom bean this year. I’m looking forward to all of your summer herb and vegetable recipes for inspiration.
Hey Megan,
Love that you are planning your garden, I hope it goes well! xTieghan
Would love to see more recipes using different types of fish other than salmon!

The dress you ordered for the wedding is soooo beautiful and it fits you and your style to a tee! Chic and simple but elegant and charming and you will look gorgeous wearing it! Heads will turn when you walk into the room!
Your brand for HBH is one of comfort food, clean and whole ingredients in each dish you prepare, savory and tasty. You share so much more with us beside the food. The gorgeous Colorado mountains and your surroundings, a simple beautiful kitchen with your eye always to the detail. Your family brings everything together and warms my heart to see how you are all so close. That sweet little Oslo is so precious and that spunky Asher I get such a kick out of her. Your oldest brother is a Hoot! Thanks for being so open and sharing them with us.
Hey Susan,
Thanks so much for reading today! Thanks for your kind feedback on the dress, I am excited to wear it! Your feedback on the HBH brand is truly so thoughtful, thanks for following along. xTieghan
Happy March Tieghan!
For me, this newsletter was EPIC. I loved all the content and wishing you Safe & Happy travels to Julian for the wedding. I’m a native San Diegan, it’s truly a great city.
Cheers,
Millette
Thank you so very much Millette! xTieghan
