Holiday Detox: The Mean Green Smoothie.
I feel like we are all on the same page today.

Like, it is detox time.
BUT my kind of detox time…the good kind, the delicious kind. Duh.

It’s been a full two months of extra cheesy meals, extra decadent desserts and I am guessing that for a lot of you New Years Eve may have also meant one too many drinks. It’s what happens every holiday season and I would not have it any other way. But just like clockwork when the New Years hits, I am ready for some health. Meaning, bring on the fruits, veggies and the greenest smoothies you can find.
Of course there will still be plenty of chocolate and cheese this year. I mean, when I say detox I use that word in the VERY lightest sense. Let’s be real, you know that I cannot go a day without at least one of these items. Thinking it’ll be a little more dark chocolate than milk though. I am a dark chocolate lover though, so this is cool.

Anyway, I am not really one of those people who buys into the detoxes where you only drink juice for like ten days. No, I could never do that. I am a solid foods person, I prefer chunky soups to smooth for this sole reason. So I could never drink just juice for ten days, kudos to those of you who can, but it’s not for me.
Smoothies however are totally my jam….with a side of toast or something because um carbs. What? They give me energy and keep my body warm on these freezing cold January days here in the mountains (AND it is COLD).

Now you guys, I just have to say one thing. DO NOT freak out at the sight of this very green smoothie. I promise, promise, promise this is DELICIOUS. It is most definitely the best smoothie I have ever made, or had (but I must admit, I have not had a lot of smoothies made FOR me… I need to go to more tropical places!).
The mean green smoothie passed the test of almost all of thirteen people in my household, and yes, that even included little Red, who was definitely highly skeptical. I think the peer pressure got to him so he tried it… and liked it! YES. Oh but Kai? Yeah, there was no way I was ever going to get him to take even the tiniest sip. He’s the brother that doesn’t eat fruits or vegetables, we are all not sure how he has made it this far in life. He was not swayed by peer pressure and claimed there was no way he was drinking a green drink. Whimp.

So even though this smoothie is crazy green, it actually tastes nothing like greens. It’s extra fruity and citrusy. I used a combo of banana, mango, pineapple and orange to mask out the flavors of kale and spirulina powder. I swear, it’s the perfect combo and there is no taste of any kale or grittiness at all. I have to admit that once I saw the color I was more than skeptical. I mean, that color, it’s intense! But I swear, this smoothie is beyond delicious. I have already made it three times this week, because well, some of our clan kind of needed the detox, but they all loved the taste.

It’s been perfect as a mid-morning snack!

The only odd ingredient in here is the spirulina powder. I bought mine at Natural Grocers, but you can also order it on Amazon. Use it in other smoothie recipes or simply add it to your juice. It is a superfood after all, so eat up!

Happy New Year, and here is to a fresh and clean start!
I JUST found some of those pretty oranges and took about 1 million photos of them!
That was totally off topic, but I had to.
These smoothies are exactly what I need…especially with the side of toast. We’re on the same carb-needage page!
Pinned!
Haha! I did the very same thing! 🙂
Thanks Taylor and Happy New Year!
I wish I could fast or do a juice diet BUT yesterday I couldn’t make it past 11 without eating–ugh.
At least your green drink would be healthy and filling. I see a whole lot of green food in my future–fruit and vegetable meals.
Like your choice of counter tops!
Haha! I would do the same! 🙂
Thank you so much, Nancy!
I am all about the green smoothie right now. I mean, I’m also still into extra cheesy meals and dessert – always. But a green smoothie in the am makes it all feel alright. I need to go check out this spirulina powder asap.
Extra cheesy and dessert? ALWAYS 🙂
Thanks Ashley!
The color is amazing. Doesn’t scare me off at all! Drinking this must make you feel like you are winning at life. LOVE it!
Thanks Liz! Happy New Year!
Tieghan, only you could make such a very green smoothie look so fabulous and tempting! I am in need of serious post-holiay detoxing, and this smoothie looks like the perfect place to start. Thanks, and happy new year!
Thank you and Happiest New Year to you too!
The color doesn’t bother me at all, I’ve making smoothies daily since August. I’m going to try this one too, looks fantastic!
Thanks Kathy! Happy New Year!
My crew loves green smoothies…even the intense ones! (usually) I love how you’ve sort of garnished these smoothies like cocktails….way to keep the celebration going!
This smoothie looks amazing, now I finally know what to use that spirulina powder my sister sent me!
Thank Emily! Hope you love this!
This looks delicious! This smoothie is GORGEOUS! Green smoothies don’t scare me, they actually make me feel like I have my life together when I am drinking them 🙂 Ha. Key word…make me THINK I do 🙂
I know what mean, I totally get that! 🙂
Thanks Erin!
This sounds delicious – and that color is beautiful! I love the addition of frozen mango…it always gives smoothies a creamier texture. Pinned for sure!
Thanks Alexa!
How often should I drink this bad ass? And how long? Happy New Year
Hey Arriane! Just drink it whenever you feel like you need a pick me up. There is no set detox plan. Hope you love this drink!
My spouse was really scared of trying this smoothy when I brought it to her, It really turned out great. not as green as yours because I am missing the spirulina powder but I’ll do it again for sure! Thanks !
Your thaï soup is also in my slow cooker as we speak 🙂
This looks amazing. Can’t wait to try it!
Thanks Sierra!
I’m not gonna lie. My first experience with Spirulina was bad only because I didn’t know how to balance the taste. With some ingenuity, you can enjoy a delicious smoothie like this one. I’m gonna have to try this one for sure. Loved the dark color too! Thanks for the recipe.
I am going to try making this smoothie tomorrow morning for breakfast. It will be my first time trying spirulina. I hope that the mangos, pineapples and the citrus of the orange help to mask the pungent, pond flavour of the spirulina. I have read that it can be quite fishy tasting, and the taste of it varies depending on where it has been sourced. I’m so excited to try it out though since its considered to be one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet!
Just made it, just drank it, LOVED IT! So delicious. Perfect flavour combination and love the deep green colour!
That is awesome!! So happy you enjoyed this! 🙂
Wow, what gorgeous photos! Oh, the smoothie wasn’t half-bad either. 😉
If I ever can’t make it out to the store to pick up ingredients and make this smoothie, then I have a green smoothie delivery from kalepower.com!
Just in case anyone else is short on time every now and then.
Hi from Italy! I just discovered your blog and I LOVE it! And I’m not a fan of food blogs usually, so this is saying something! I am addicted to smoothies (though I too am a solid food lover, I could probably go on just with drinking smoothies for a couple of days). Unfortunately, I have many allergies: all the -berries and pinneaple! Can I make this smoothie without the pinneaple? I don’t want to taste the kale…or maybe I can use something else instead of pineapple?
Hey Marta! Yes, you can swap the pineapple with equal an equal amount of banana. PLease let me know if you have any other questions. Thank you SO much for all your kind words!! 🙂
This is really great! I didn’t have the spirulina powder the first time i made this & just added more kale & spinach to get greener. but not green like you made. Then i ordered the spirulina powder from amazon & yep, that sure does the trick. Spirulina makes it the Mean green color. & yeah this smoothie tastes amazing. I made a batch & i had some left over so i made a smoothie bowl out of it, added some vanilla protein powder to make a meal ( that thickened it up too), sprinkled some banana chips, pumpkin seeds/ pepitas, sunflower seeds & whole cashews on top.
yum!
Lots of variations! All sound amazing! Glad you liked it Karen!
Oh my god! This smoothie is absolutely amazing! What a great combination.
I’m super new to your website, but I gotta say I’m in love with everything I’ve seen so far. I’ll definatley be coming back.
Keep it up, girl!!!
Thank you so much Jess! I hope you continue to love the recipes I share!
Hi! I’m not a fan of mango – would you recommend something else I can replace it with in this smoothie so that it still helps mask the taste of the kale & spirulina? Should I double up on pineapple or banana?
Hey Gabrielle,
I think pineapple would also be great here. I hope you love the recipe, let me know how it turns out! xTieghan
