Thick + Creamy Chocolate Pistachio Chia Shake.
Time to jump on this whole chia seed bandwagon.
Actually, I have been eating chia seeds for years, but this is the very first time I have used them in anything other than yogurt.
I always make giant yogurt bowls (again, hyped on the bowl food) with pomegranate arils (or any other berry/fruit depending on the season), almonds and or pistachios and chia seeds. It is super simple, but I eat these yogurt bowls almost every single day. If you know me, than you know I am a nut and greek yogurt loving freak. I eat the two of them together all the time.
And yes, this means that I actually do eat snacks other than chocolate cake and brownies…….
Not that I have any problem with that.
Soo….
I feel like we should talk a little bit about this new look the site has.
I mean it has been live since Friday.
So yeah, I think it is time to chit-chat a little about it.
First of all, what do you think?
I am hopping you guys are loving it as much as I do. It is fun right?
I think some of my favorite parts are the cute little forks scattered throughout the site. Melissa + Erin did a great job.
I absolutely love Melissa’s designs. She is one talented women and if you ask me she is killing it in both the blogging and design worlds. And now, on top of all that, she is learning to master the new mommy world as well!
Somehow she totally got what I was going for and even showed me that I can like the color pink. Just so you know, I have never, ever like the color pink. Ask anyone and they will tell you I am a true tomboy at heart, so the pink was definitely a surprise, but I am kind of loving it.
Other than the design of the site, everything else should pretty much work the same.
Be sure to let me know if there are any issues you guys run into. There are always a few kinks to work out in the first couple days, so please leave a comment or shoot me an email.
Ahhh….. and isn’t the font the cutest? I love the font.
I feel like it is just refreshing. New year… new clean and pretty site. YES! I have been wanting a new design since I started Half Baked Harvest, so I am pumped.
Oh, and I am kind pumped over these shakes. Although they are honestly more like soft serve ice cream. It just depends on how much almond milk you use, but I left mine thick. I am a sucker for soft serve. DQ was my childhood favorite.

A thick and delicious chia shake
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk plus more to thin if desired
- 2 tablespoons black chia seeds
- 3 whole medjool dates pitted
- 1/3 cup roasted + shelled pistachios plus more for topping
- 3 frozen medium + very ripe bananas peeled and sliced
- 2 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/4 cup plain greek yogurt or use coconut milk yogurt for a vegan option
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
-
In a small bowl mix together the milk and chia seeds. Let this sit for 10-15 minutes.
-
Meanwhile add the pistachios and dates to the bowl of a food processor or high powered blender. Blend until the mixture becomes finely chopped and almost butter like, scraping down the side as you go. You want to get it as smooth as possible. I let the mixture blend for about 5 minutes.
-
To the blender add the chia seeds + milk mixture, the frozen banana chunks, cocoa powder, greek yogurt and vanilla extract. Blend until thick, creamy, and smooth, about 3-4 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the blender as needed. If the shake is too thick add more milk to your liking.
Recipe Notes
*If you would like a sweeter shake add 1 tablespoon (or more) of honey - to your taste.
Go ahead, be as indulgent as you like – they won’t hurt a bit!
I love chia seeds. They’re miracle workers, really! I bet they make this shake so smooth! Mmm! Gorgeous images and styling. That straw I think was tailor-made for this recipe! pinned
Thanks!! I thought the straw was pretty perfect too!
Oh and thanks for the pin!
Love it! Pinned it! Love the new look of the site, very fresh and new for the new year! And the forks here there and everywhere are pretty darn cute 😉 Love the pops of pink, not too girly at all, you should have no worries 🙂 LOL Keep up the good work, you have an amazing talent with food.
Thank you so much, Jennifer!!
Filled with yummy, healthy things! What a great alternative to the standard blueberry smoothie we make all the time around here. Chocolate anything, yes, please.
Thanks Annie!
Love your new site. I would love to try this recipe though 😀
Thank you!
I haven’t chia seed anything yet! I know…totally late to the party. But these look deeelish! DQ is definitely one of my favs and so is the choc/pistachio combo!
I guess better late than never right?
P.s for some reason your banana picture made me giggle.

Thank you! I love pistachios too!
I love chia seeds too. I pretty much put it in my bread and brownie recipes. The only challenge is how to get rid of them from you teeth because the stuck to your teeth easily, but this does not make me averse the seed because it is so healthy.
They do get stuck in teeth, so annoying!!
Hope you love this!
The site is super cute! It is very professional and has a very light airy happy feeling to it! Soooo there is so mych hype with chia seeds, if you are down with it I know I gotta try making something with them now. I hear they are really good to make jams and jellies with too! Will try this bad boy! They have all them omega 3’s right?!
Right! They are loaded with Omegas!!
Thanks Sophia!
I never make anything with chia seeds and it’s silly since they’re basically anti-everythingbadforyou in a spoon. Love this!
You have to give them a try!
Thanks Katrina!
I’ve been on the chia seed bandwagon for a long time, and I looooove pistachios….this shake is right up my alley!
Thanks Kelli!
Pistachios are my favorite!
Great looking recipe. I love chai seeds. I am lucky enough to have a vitamix, after soaking the chai seeds and milk, can I run the milk, chai seeds, dates and pistachios through the vitamix. Or should I still do them separately. Great looking site.
Hey Shayla!
I think that would probably work fine. I am jealous of you vitamix!!
Hope you love these, Shayla!
Um… I need this in my life. Like, asap. Why don’t I have almond milk right now?! o.O Sigh.
Haha, you can use any milk!
I agree with Kammie . . . this has to happen now!!
Thanks Todd!
This looks so good! I have yet to try chia seeds in this kind of shake (only sprinkled on yogurt or in chia water–which is a bit weird, but I kinda liked it). And all of your pictures are so sharp!
Again, the site is looking great Tieghan! The forks are my fave too 🙂
Thanks Laura!!
I’m so craving chocolate right now – my Tuesday afternoon needs this shake!
Thanks Laura!
Hi Tieghan!
I love pistachios and I usually just eat it by the handful. It looks delicious.
I’m not sure if it’s just me (probably is) but whenever I go to your site I don’t see your most recent post. I have to google it along with the date to get the latest recipe!
Hey Hilary!
It is not just you and I am working on the issue. So sorry about that and I hope to have it fixed really, really soon! Let me know if the problem persist!
Love the new look, seriously love it! I just got some chia seeds in the mail and I had no idea what I was going to do with them. You added them to chocolate, you win! I am making this!

Can’t wait to try these. One comment – I am assuming that you mean 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt (recipe only reads 1/4, no cup).
Yes! I do mean 1/4 cup and and I fixed the recipe. Thanks so much for catching that!
Hope you love this!
This looks more like a yummy dessert than a shake – gorgeous!
Love the site too. Like another commenter I wasn’t seeing your latest posts but I am now, so hopefully your issue with that is fixed!

Really want this for my snack tonight! I do not have pistachios but do have pecans, almonds and walnuts. Do you think one would be a good sub??

YEAH!! I am so excited you loved them! THANKS!
LOVE this shake, thank you so much! What nuts would you recommend instead of pistachios as hard to get them at a reasonable price here… Thanks!
Hello Halfbaked, Thanks for sharing this, however, please pardon my question – I know yoghurt has to feature in this recipe but is there any other option besides greek yoghurt(husband is averse to cow’s by-product) or coconut milk yoghurt(can’t find any at where I am now)…
Much thanks in advance and good day to you…
Hi!! Just try replacing the yogurt with your favorite non dairy milk. Would that work?
Thanks, I will try that out and let you know how it turns out… Have a great day ahead!
Sry, for my broken english, but thank you soooooo much. And not just for this recipe. I’m a big fan of your blog. You know, I’m vegan and I try some of your recipes (even some non-vegan and turned they vegan. My sister too.) and it was so delicious…. so, thank you for that 🙂
-Perry
Awe!! Thank you so much for these kind words, Perry!! So happy you are loving my recipes! Have a great weekend!!

Hi Sharon! I am really sorry, but I do not provide the calories for my recipes. Hope you love the shake and let me know if you have questions. Thanks!
Would you happen to know the calorie content in this?
Banana is the fruit that I like best.
Bananas are so good! Thanks!
WoW! That’s a really big carb and sugar load! A healthier lower car-zero sugar version would be great for those of us who cannot tolerate excessive sugars and carbs. But it look YUMMY YUM!
Thank you so much Rosary!
This is delicious!! I’ve made it several times over the next few weeks. I’m not hungry for ages!
Amazing!! I am really glad you are enjoying this shake, Isabella! Thank you! xTieghan
