Red’s 3 Favorite Winter Juices and Smoothies: Protein Packed Matcha Smoothie/Citrus Beet Juice/Tropical Carrot Juice.
Muahahaha…I am a little too happy and excited about today’s post.

For one, all this winter color has me full of energy. I love that in the deadest and coldest of seasons I can still find freshness and color to brighten my day.
The second reason I am pumped for this post??? I got Red (Redmond), hands down the pickiest eater in my family, to drink not only something green, but something red and orange too. I swear, he totally drank these… which left me shocked beyond belief. He said the beet juice was his favorite, since it tasted super lemony, plus the red color didn’t freak him out as much as the green. The green matcha however was the favorite of my other brother, Brendan, and his girlfriend Lyndsie. I’m with Red though, I loved the beet juice best, then maybe the carrot and then the matcha, but all three are delicious.
I promise, promise, promise.
Sooo. Let me tell you about this post title came about. Little Red may have one of the poorest diets ever. Ok, well that’s not entirely true, he does eat lots of fruits, but very minimal vegetables, and the kid gets Chipotle way more times in one week than anyone would ever need. He has about five foods he will actually eat. Mac n’ cheese, chicken, Nutella crepes, Chipotle and occasionally he’ll eat a California roll from a Sushi place (I know totally random). Yes, he eats other things, but I swear these are his main food groups. Oh, and he also loves Ramen…but the packaged stuff, not the homemade yummy stuff. Of course he loves all sweets too, but that’s a given, right? He’s also a HUGE snacker. Think potato chips, flaming hot Cheetos, pretzels and carrots dipped in bottled ranch dressing.
I think you get the point, he’s not the world’s healthiest eater. However, my mom and I are trying to change that this year. You see Red is kind of a cool kid and he’s totally not normal. He does not go to school (well he is supposedly enrolled in an online school through the US Team, but man I don’t know when he would have time to fit in schoolwork!), he travels the world and he snowboards all day long, all year-long… oh, and he’s fifteen! I know, I know, I’m jealous too. Kid has the life I wish I had when I was his age.
All the coolness aside, he can also be completely annoying at times, but hey, I am his big sis so that just goes with the territory. In general though he’s a super nice and fun kid to hang out with. I hope he doesn’t go through the dreaded “teenage years”, cause man, that would be a bummer.
Anyway, my point in all this rambling is that I’ve decided Red’s gotta start eating some veggies. He’s flying off these jumps like an insane person and you guys, he needs some veggies in his system to protect his bones and keep him strong and energized. Since I feel like it might be nice to put some images in your head for you to properly visualize just what I am talking about, I asked my brother Kai put together a quick video…
Red Gerard from Half Baked Harvest on Vimeo.
Yes, I know. It’s insane, right? And yes, that is our backyard in a couple of those clips, and yes, that’s what it has looked like for the last three weeks. Also, did you see the tow rope?? The brothers made that!! For a bunch of snowboarders, I would say that was a pretty genius invention. I think it was actually my brother Brendan’s brainchild.
So do you get what I’m saying now? Kid’s gotta start eating better… and MORE. He is the tiniest kid. No seriously, he competes with grown men in their thirties… and then there is Red, who looks like he has not eaten a meal in a week, weighs 90 pounds and is maybe 5 feet. I know, I know. YIKES!
Me being the best sister (he might argue that one) that I am, decided that I needed to make him a few veggie drinks!! some winter juices and smoothies to give him some serious energy for the next few busy months ahead.
Red has always loved fruit smoothies. Particularly strawberry and banana, so I thought I might – just maybe – get him to drink these super healthy ones too. The good thing about Red is that he can be open to trying new things. Key word – CAN BE. Over Christmas he ate a whole fish taco and then I convinced him the juices were next. We had a little chat and came up with a few flavors combos we thought he might like. I then added extra healthy things like beets, kale, spinach, ginger, lemon, Matcha and nut butters. Yum. yum!!

OKAY. So first, the Protein Packed Matcha Smoothie. This one was a HUGE hit all around. It’s subtle in flavor, but packed with all the good things in the world (slight exaggeration) and perfectly sweet. This smoothie consists of kale, pineapple, banana, almond or peanut butter, matcha green tea powder, an optional scoop of spirulina and almond milk (or any milk of your choice). This is the perfect green smoothie for the people in the world who HATE green things. If it were not for the color, you would think this is just another yummy banana smoothie!
The second is a Citrus Beet Energy Juice. No joke you guys, this juice literally wakes you right up. I think it’s all the winter citrus!! This one contains, red beets, spinach, apples, blood oranges (or any orange you prefer), ginger, lemon and honey. To me, this was kind of like a super citrusy lemonade. I LOVE this one and have been drinking it non-stop. I actually don’t own a juicer, so I included directions on how to make this juice with just a blender as well. SO easy!
Drink number three? Tropical Carrot Juice!! Bring on all the tropical eats… please!! OH I am so ready for a tropical vacation. Like clockwork, the holidays are over and I am ready to be shipped off to the Caribbean. Since I have zero plans to travel anywhere warm this winter, this juice will have to do. It’s packed with carrots, pineapple, mango, ginger, cinnamon, vanilla, orange and coconut. I know, I know. So tropical. Must be why I love it so much!!
And there you have it – Red’s 3 Favorite Winter Juices and Smoothies!!

The great thing about all three of these recipes is that they are completely no fuss. You just need a blender and about 5-10 minutes to make them. SIMPLE. You can use frozen fruits to cut down on prep time (which I highly recommend since it keeps the drinks colder!!), and any leftovers can be stored in the fridge for a few days. You could even make a big batch on Sunday so they are ready to go for your work week.
The matcha smoothie is great as a breakfast drink, and the juices are the perfect energy boost for the mid-day “ugh I am so bored and tired” slump.
PLUS, huge bonus points for these juices gorgeous vibrant colors. Just looking at them makes me happy!!

the colors on these are amazing, and they all sound so fresh! i was drawn to the citrus beet juice as soon as you described it as being a really tasty lemonade, and i love the sound of ginger in there for a bit of a kick.
Thanks Heather! Have a great weekend!
I’m usually not big on smoothies but these sound delish!
Thank you!
These look so good and thanks for putting the information about how far in advance these can be made! Time is so tight in the mornings (we have a puppy and he takes up so much of my attention), so anything I can make for breakfast the night before is such a help!
It’ll be nice to have this instead of overnight oats. What is spirulina and what are the benefits of it?
Thanks x
Hey Angela!! Here is a great article on spirulina: http://wellnessmama.com/4738/spirulina-herb-profile/
It is superfood and high in vitamins, protein and amino acids. Thanks so much hope you love these recipes!!
New juices to try after the gym 😀 The matcha smoothies looks inviting!
Thanks Toshi! Have a great weekend!!
Tieghan, these look so nice! Have you ever considered using the carrot tops in your smoothies? I always put them in my green lemonade smoothies and they give a nice healthy boost! Although I’ve been advised to only do this with organic carrots as regular ones may have lots of pesticides on them.
No I have not, but that is a great idea! Thank you!! Have a great weekend!
WOW!! The video was amazing. How to believe someone can do that. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Charlotte! Have a great weekend!
Oh my I have morning duty and Red looks like one of the sixth graders in front of me.
But I watched the video and he is one incredible athlete!
And you will win him over one day.
haha! Thank you so much, Nancy! have a great weekend!
Already sipping on that matcha smoothie, right now.. It is GOOD.
YEAH!! That makes me so happy, THANK YOU!! Have a great weekend! 🙂
Just wanted to say your little brother is way too cool and I super happy his big sister is helping him get more goodness on board. It takes a lot of energy to do what he does and I wish him lots of good wishes for a great adventurous 2016. I use to teach skiing and I watched these young people and was always in Awe of their talent.
Your smoothie recipes are being printed as we speak, thanks for your awesome recipes throughout the year.
hehe! Thank you so much, Cindy! Have a great weekend!!
I grew up in Lyons and really miss all the snow. We hardly get any in Missouri. Can’t wait to try these out with my new Omega juicer! Here’s to a juicier New Year! 🙂
Thanks Jenna! Happy New Year!
What a cutie! Your family is the best.
Thanks Sarah! 🙂
I’m thinking I need to start drinking healthy morning smoothies and these sound especially delish! Are the veggies peeled in your recipes or is the skin the healthy part? Do/can you add protein powders? I’m really the novice here. Thanx!
I do not peel the veggies, just leave them on. Yes, you can add protein powder. Hope you love these! THANKS!
Awesome smoothies!!! Video – wow!! he’s really an amazing snowboarder! P.S. Don’t let your mom see that video. 🙂
haha! Pretty sure she has seen it! 🙂
Thank you!
These look soooo good! I would really like to try the Matcha Smoothie and Tropical Carrot Juice. Yum!

This looks AMAAAAZING. May I ask where you got those gorgeous glasses??
Thanks Jamie! Those Weck Jars you can find them and Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=weck+jars
AND Crate and Barrel: http://www.crateandbarrel.com/search?query=weck%20jars
I love that these all can be made without a juicer. I love all of the different juice combinations but haven’t been able to bring myself to invest in that expensive piece of equipment! Going to give these all a try for sure.
Thanks Robin! Have a great weekend!
How did you know juice is foremost on my mind today?!?! I made green lemonade the other day. This morning I prepped a ton of fruit and veg so I can just turn on the juicer
and get to it. The prepped produce keeps really well in gallon freezer bags for several days…well most of a week any way. Juicing for a family around here means making 1/2 + gallon at a time! Thanks for the reaffirmation of Healthy January! P.S. Your beet combo is my fave.
Oh perfect! Thanks Tiffany and have a great weekend!
Beautiful juices! Once in a while I love a good smoothie in the winter. The video was gorgeous too!
Thanks Cassie! Have a great weekend!
There are so many crazy things on here! First….the juices. I totally agree with you that citrus ROCKS beets.
Second, um, your brother and his gravity defying skills. What the what.
Third…..I forgot because I was distracted with the gorgeous juices!
hehe! Thank you so much, Annie!! Have the best weekend!
Your family looks so cool!
hah, trust me we are not!
Thank you!
Love that back yard set up! We were watching the Dew Tour and pretty impressed Red was able to huck himself over the booters. My boyfriend wanted to start drinking green juice to get more vegetables, I nearly fell off my chair. We have enjoyed a few different combination but I am always scared to venture into these type of juices. I will have to try some time!
Thanks Julianne! Have a great weekend!
I LOVE smoothies and these are positively beautiful!! Gonna have to try one of them this weekend! Question: Could you PLEASE do a blogging tips/ho-to’s mini series? I love your pictures, recipes, and writing and would love to know some tips! I’ve had my own blog for a short time now and haven’t gotten very many visitors, but you have like millions!! Thanks so much!

I was curious so I went to your blog.
An amazing beginning for one who is 12–hard work and time and you will see results.
Like the kale recipe.

I absolutely love juicing and am always looking for new inspiration!
I can’t wait to try these juices out, looks delicious!
Awe! Thanks so much, Sara! Have a great weekend! 🙂
You are too cute you are like the little sister I always wanted. These juices look amazing!! I have a beautiful 15 year old daughter who also snowboards ( not anywhere as good as your little bro☺️) but she has fun. We often go to monarch and copper maybe we will see him fly by.
haha! Thanks you so much! Hope you are having a great weekend!
I’m obsessed with all those colors! These look beyond fab!
This is so GORGEOUS!
These juices look so healthy and delicious. Hope the cookbook is coming along well – your photography is one of my biggest inspirations!
Hi. Veggie drinks look great. Have you seen the Jan 2016 issue of Better Homes and Gardens? I would encourage your readers, and yourself, to check out the juices and smoothies featured in this month’s issue. Extraordinary!
such vibrant colors!
Thank you!
Love love LOVE the photography!! Ahhh so gorgeous! Colorful juices and smoothies are totally my thing too. <3
Hi, Tieghan.
I just wanted to let you know that I made your beet smoothie a few days ago and it was not my favorite. I love smoothies and thought that the blood oranges and apples would cover up the beet flavor, but the beets would make it look pretty and give it some nutrition benefits. The smoothie turned out with great consistently looked very pretty, but all I could taste was beets. My family and I don’t love beets so haha it was probably the wrong smoothie to make. I do want to give what I hope is constructive criticism and that I think this smoothie would be much better if you only added one beet because the color would still be there, but you would be able to taste some other favors besides just the beets.
Thank you for all the great recipes that I have made and I will definitely continue to make food from your blog.
Hey Kristen,
This is for sure a drink that has a beet taste. I added the beets not only for color but for health as well. You could totally adapt it though and just add 1 beet. Thanks for the kind words! 🙂
I’m so excited to try these recipes! I bought a high powered blender because of this post, haha. I guess it wouldn’t detract too much if I substituted the blood orange with grapefruit taste wise.
Grapefruit will be amazing! Hope you love the juices and let me know if you have questions. THANKS!
OMG.
I just got done making the Citrus Beet Energy Juice and the grapefruit worked! This is my first endeavor into smoothie making and I’m so glad I used your recipe :D!
I did add one more ingredient: cayenne pepper. It was the right amount of heat and sweetness.
SO happy you love the juice! THANKS!!
Remarkable! Its really remarkable piece of writing, I have got much clear idea on the topic of from
this post.
Thank you!
Any other type of orange you can recommend other than blood? We don’t have those in season right now…. looks refreshing ?
