Honey Mustard Grilled Salmon with Avocado Basil Sauce.
Starting the week off with the perfect Memorial Day BBQ recipe, Honey Mustard Grilled Salmon with Avocado Basil Sauce. Spice rub grilled salmon drizzled with sweet and tangy honey mustard. Serve alongside a deliciously addicting avocado basil sauce and top with sweet basily cherry tomatoes – so simple, extra colorful, and super flavorful. A great healthy salmon recipe to throw on the grill for Memorial Day…and every other warm summer night to follow.

It’s crazy that Memorial Day is just a week from today. I say this every single year, so I don’t mean to sound like a broken record, but to me, Memorial Day is the unofficial kick off to summer. I think most of you will agree with me on that. It’s exciting, right? I’m ready for the chill days of summer and all the delicious food that comes along with the extra sunshine and long days.
As close as we are to summer, back at home there’s actually a winter storm warning in effect. There’s 8-18 inches of snow predicted in Summit County – ugh. May is one of our “ugliest” months, but come June things will turn the corner, and I cannot wait!
The good news for me is that I’m spending all of this week in LA, and escaping the cold, dreary spring mountain weather. Pretty happy about it, such a fun week ahead!
Anyway, in prep for Memorial Day next week, I’ll be sharing all summer cookout recipes this week! Starting with this colorful and delicious salmon.

Do you all remember a few weeks ago when I made these black pepper chicken fingers? If you happened to have missed that recipe, I highly recommend giving it a scroll through. It’s become everyone’s favorite dinner this past month, mine included. What I love most about those chicken fingers though?
The honey mustard dipping sauce. Ever since I made that sauce, I have been obsessed with it. I’ve used it on everything from chicken, to salads, to this salmon recipe. It’s one of those sauces that’s just so easy make, and so good, that you make it all the time.

I started by rubbing the whole salmon with a mix of spices to create a bit of a rub. I love flavor, so seasoning the salmon before it hits the grill is a must, you know?
Once the salmon is grilled on both sides, drizzle the honey mustard over the warm salmon. The sauce melts overtop creating a luscious sauce that glazes the salmon. It’s almost buttery, but without any butter. It’s slightly tangy, a touch sweet, and all around delicious.

I like to serve this salmon topped with sweet cherry tomatoes and a spicy jalapeño avocado and basil sauce. The avocado sauce is the perfect creamy, spicy sauce to balance out the sweetness from the honey mustard. It’s almost mayo like, but so much better…and kind of addicting. Tip? Leftovers are great on a salad, toast, or even used as a dip.
And the tomatoes? They’re the best topping! Summer is so close, and soon we’ll be needing ideas for all those tasty tomatoes. Just trying to prepare us all!

What’s truly great about this recipe is how simple and easy it is, but yet it has so much going on. So yes, this will be great for grilling over Memorial Day. But it’s going to be equally great as an any night of the week summer dinner. Simple enough for Monday through Friday, but elegant enough for a dinner party with friends.
And healthy…major bonus!

This grilled salmon looks so good. I will definitely try this soon.
I smile when I read that you are in Summit County. That makes sense in your area. I also live in Summit County in Ohio! I never think of us living in a high altitude but I guess we do. Just not as high as you!
Enjoy Cali!
Wow that is so awesome!! Thank you so much Robin! xTieghan
I am crazy about this time of year and the grilling season. I can finally get out on my deck and enjoy the warm weather. I can’t wait to try this salmon recipe on my grill. It looks and sounds beyond delicious. Also the avocado basil sauce sounds “out of this world.” Thanks for always sharing such inspiring recipes.
Yes!! That is the best feeling! I hope you love this recipe, Linger! Thank you so much! xTieghan
This recipe looks amazing!
Thank you Darina! xTieghan
I’m so excited to make this tonight! One question – does the lemon juice get drizzled on the salmon with the olive oil or is just the zest used? Thank you!
Hey Laura! I usually just use the zest, but you can certainly use the juice too! Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you! xTieghan
About to make this. I don’t see where to add the lemon juice? Can’t wait to try yet another amazing recipe of yours.
HI there! The lemon juice is used in the mustard sauce. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you! xTieghan
Made this tonight. Put lemon juice in spice rub, was that right? Didn’t get the taste of avocado Basel sauce. . . Maybe if salmon was dry but not so much. Liked honey mustard drizzle.
Hey Pam, I am sorry, not really sure what you are saying/asking. The lemon juice is added to the mustard sauce. Hope I can help!
I live in Los Angeles and It is supposed to be high 80s now esp this memorial weekend but forecast is mid 60s and some showers. It’s not going to stop me from firing up the grill and enjoying this recipe. This is going to be the 3rd salmon recipe I’ve tried so far from HBH, super excited. We love basil, salmon, cherry tomatoes and ? avocados! Can’t wait! Enjoy your time in (hopefully soon) sunny California Tieghan!
Wow sounds like the perfect weekend! I hope you enjoy yours, Imee! Also, I hope you love this recipe!! xTieghan

In the middle of making—lemon juice?? It only mentions where to put the zest, not the juice.?
Hi there! The juice is added to the honey mustard, recipe is all fixed! Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you! xTieghan
This was the best salmon I’ve ever tasted! My guests all agreed, the mix of flavors was so incredible. The avocado basil sauce was so fresh and tasty (one guest smiled and said it smelled like a garden), a perfect complement to the spices of the rub and the sweetness of the drizzle. I made sauté sugar snap peas and herbed quinoa to go with it – the perfect dinner!! Thank you so much for such an excellent, and easy, recipe! My guests were impressed!
This is so amazing to hear, Stephanie! Thank you so much! xTieghan
Hi tiegan! I love your recipes, I always come to your website when I’m cooking for company. I would love if you recommended some sides to go with your recipes! Making this salmon tonight!
Thank you so much Natasha! I hope you love this recipe! I usually love to add vegetables and a carb! Or maybe a side salad ? xTieghan
Hey! What if your salmon is frozen? Should it be thawed first?
Hi Kara, yes you should thaw the salmon before using. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you! xTieghan
This was great! We grilled it on a cedar plank and everyone, including kids, loved it with the rub and avocado/basil cream.
We served with the roasted asparagus and the honey mustard sauce. A few thoughts 1) the mustard sauce was pretty sweet. I will cut back on honey next time. 2) if using a vita mix to make the avocado creme and have the newer, wider containers this won’t work well, too small a volume. Consider a smaller blender or food processor.
Great recipe! It will be on repeat for us.
Yum yum yum! I am so glad you loved this Tricia! Thank you! xTieghan
Made this tonight over mixed greens and corn cut from the cob (might grill it next time). Drizzled a bit of the honey mustard dressing on the greens. Huge it! The family loved it.
Thank you Kristin! xTieghan
Had this for dinner with friends, grilled it on a cedar plank, it came out AMAZING. We have other favorite salmon recipes from you (i.e. the one in your cookbook, oh my gosh!) but honestly, this one takes the cake! So delicious! Thank you for all the deliciousness you create! 🙂 Keep the recipes coming!
Love that! Thank you Melissa! xTieghan
I made this and results were great. The sauce for salmon was exceptional.
The avocado one didn’t seem that great.
Thank you Phil! xTieghan
Any tips for doing this stovetop? This looks absolutely amazing and I currently have some wild Alaskan king salmon that needs to be cooked!
Hey Nicole! Sure! You can first season the salmon as directed, then pan sear in a skillet. If you need, you can cut the salmon into smaller fillets to make it easier to sear in a skillet. Then add the honey mustard after cooking. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you! xTieghan
So yummy! A def showstopper. Fun to make and eat for a crowd. A summer bbq must! The sauces were so.yummy!
Thank you so much Kasey! I am so glad you loved this! xTieghan
We so enjoyed this. That avocado sauce is delicious and I’ll be using the honey mustard again this week on some veggie side.
Such a nice combo of sweet and spicy. Thanks for another hit!!!
Thank you Stefanie!! So glad you liked this! xTieghan
Hi, is there a way to bake this instead of grilling?
Hey Steph! Of course! You can bake at 425 degrees for 12-15 minutes or until the salmon is cooked to your liking. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you! xTieghan
This was a hit with the whole family, Also made it with chicken breast for my mother who dislikes salmon. It was just as good. Thanks for the great recipe
Thank you so much Emilie! xTieghan
I had to make this in the oven but the combo of the honey mustard and the avocado basil sauce was awesome! The tomatoes were great but I’m not sure they were necessary (I served it with a salad and roasted veggies). I think it would have been easier to mix the spices and put them on the fish and then add the lemon zest and garlic because it got a little gloppy.
Overall it was amazing!! I got so many compliments at my dinner party!
I am really happy to hear that Tricia! Thank you so much for trying this recipe! xTieghan
How would this be room temperature? Having some ladies over for an end of summer dinner and want to serve salmon, but don’t want to be grilling last minute. Seems as if it would hold?
Hey Betsy! This is great room temp and hold up well, just don’t leave it out longer than an hour or so for food safety reason! Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you! xTieghan
This salmon was amazing! I had actually made your pineapple shrimp tacos earlier in the week, so I used the jalapeno sauce from that recipe instead of the avocado because I had some leftover. It worked so well! Will try the avocado sauce next time though. Thanks for bringing us delicious dinners!
So glad you enjoyed both of those recipes, Lauren! Thank you so much for trying them! xTieghan
Had lots of compliments on this
Amazing! Thank you Tami! xTieghan
I am very picky when it comes to seafood. Normally sticking to white flaky fish. We tried this dish tonight and it was amazing! We took our first bites and decided it was going to go in regular rotation. Thank you for all of the amazing recipes. We cook at least 2-3 from your collection weekly!
That is so amazing!! I am so glad you loved this recipe, Mary! Thank you! xTieghan
Tried this today but we baked it and still got that crispy skin. Phew! It’s already good on its own but pairing it with the honey mustard and avocado sauce makes it a thousand times more delicious! There’s some leftover salmon and I can’t wait to finish it! ??
I am so glad you loved this Kim! Thank you so much! xTieghan
i only made the salmon. It was delicious..
Thank you so much Jo Jo! xTieghan
This was so good!!! It had amazing flavor and so easy!
Thank you so much Claire! That is really great to hear! xTieghan
This was unreal! I just made this for my family in Denver, and it really was one of the most unique, beautiful salmon dishes I’ve ever made – and we eat salmon weekly. Easier than it looks, the flavors were so incredible, and the presentation was so pretty. I felt like we were (finally!) back in a restaurant. And because I always love to know what people do, we kept it super simple and just served it with quinoa (+ rolls for the kids).
I’ve been making your recipes almost daily during quarantine. You are such a talent! Thanks for sharing with us.
Oh wow that is so amazing to hear! Thank you so much Kathryn! xTieghan
I made this recipe tonight for my family and it was incredible! A friend introduced me to your blog a couple of month ago, right before the stay at home order, so it’s given me the opportunity to try a lot of your recipes. I’ve been enjoying them all – the cocktails and the meals more do than the baking as I’m not a huge sweets person. This recipe inspired me to comment, as it was surprisingly delicious. My whole family was racing. I wasn’t sure about the flavor combinations – is it southwest or Italian? But everything worked. Can’t wait to make it again. Thanks for sharing such great recipes!!!
Hi Kim! I am so happy you have been loving my recipes and I hope you continue to! Probably the best time to be introduced to the site haha. Thank you so much! xTieghan
I have never commented on a recipe in my life. This was INSANELY perfect. The best dish I’ve made (and I’ve made one every night) during the pandemic. Each night, my ex-husband (yep) and my 25-year-old daughter put a price tag on the meals: “In a restaurant, this would be $xxx.” Last night, with this dish, it was, easily, $38 per plate. It’s not a lot of work–and it is heaven for the tastebuds. Thank you so much! A keeper!
Wow that is so amazing to hear!! Thank you so much for trying this one, Lizabeth!! xTieghan
The sauces were both great! Made the salmon fillets on a traeger smoker. I added extra garlic to the basil avocado sauce as well as salt because it was sort of bland before.
Thank you Ariel! xTieghan
super yummy! made it for my family and they loved it!! would definitely make again
Thank you Jessica! xTieghan
Another winner from HBH! Looking it over this may seem labor intensive but all comes together quickly and well worth the effort. My family dubbed it their favorite seafood dish to date. All flavors and textures are covered. Will definitely serve when hosting guests – presentation is gorgeous. Thank you!!!!
Thank you so much Kristen! I am so glad you enjoyed this recipe! xTieghan
This was soooo good! Highly recommend and have saved to make again soon. We made the avocado basil sauce (which was delicious in its own right) but found that the salmon was perfect without it!
Love to hear that, Casey! Thank you for trying this! xTieghan
So delicious! The leftover honey mustard made a great salad dressing too!
Thank you Kathryn! xTieghan
Can you modify this to be baked in an oven?
Hey Margaret,
Yes, that would work well. You can bake at 425 degrees for 12-15 minutes or until the salmon is cooked to your liking. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you! xTieghan
This is the best salmon I’ve had (home, restaurant, otherwise) hands-down. Loved the rub, the honey-mustard drizzle, and the avocado side-sauce. Absolutely delicious, thank you!!!
Hey Cari,
Thanks so much for making the recipe, I am so glad it was enjoyed! xTieghan
Awesome recipe! Thank you again!
Thanks so much Sandy! xTieghan
Can you please let me know if I can do this with CHAR instead of Sa
Hey Amy,
So sorry I am not sure what you are asking. Please let me know how I can help! xTieghan
