Skinny Tandoori Butter Sweet Potato Fries w/Creamy Baked Harissa Feta.
So how do you feel about fries for dinner?
Because that is what these fries should probably be tonight. Maybe with a fried egg on top? Sounds pretty delish to me, but then again it’s carbs, cheese and eggs. Staple foods around here.
And you know, it’s totally cool that we are going to eat fries for dinner because one, these are sweet potato fries (ah yeah – health food!!) and two, these are oven fries, meaning no frying was involved, meaning we get to eat them all by ourselves, right? Yes, definitely… with a fried egg because I obviously think that’d be extra delicious, but that may because I have been egg obsessed ever since our chickens started laying eggs. It’s literally been eggs on everything over here.
Also, did I mention that I will soon be neighbors with my favorite little chicks? Yuppers! The chicks live right across from the barn, and you guys?!?!
The barn is really shaping up. Final floors are going to be poured on Friday, cabinets are being made, paint colors are being chosen and I am headed down to Denver today to pick out counters, kitchen sink + faucet, stuff for the bathroom and bedroom – to which I have thought nothing about because the kitchen is everything to me. I live in my kitchen, not my bedroom. I am excited to say the least. It’s surely a dream come true for me and I couldn’t feel more grateful.
But geez, I am overwhelmed. Keeping up with barn stuff, work stuff and life in general is ridiculously hard. It’s mostly the barn stuff and all the decisions though. I will forever hate serious decisions.
No fun at all.
However, I will forever love sweet potato fries. Like forever and ever and ever.
I feel like you either love sweet potatoes or you hate them. If you hate them, well I have to say you are kind of crazy, but people call me crazy ALL. THE. TIME. so what the heck do I know anyway. If you love sweet potatoes though, than you probably love sweet potatoes fries, and you’ll for sure love these. They are perfectly spiced for autumn and well, there is a heck of a lot of cheese to dip (or um, smother) them in. I went a little Indian with the flavors, but then kind of not, because I added some parmesan cheese and some butter and those together just take things right back down to American and all things fall. The harissa dip though, that is pretty Indian inspired. Oh but wait, then I added the brie.
Ah yeah, I did. It just sounded so good and it was staring me down. I couldn’t resist. So it’s a baked brie and feta dip with some spicy harissa stirred in.
HEAVEN.
Psst, try my homemade harissa if you have the time!
I made the fries in the oven to keep things healthy, plus when it comes to fries, I really just cannot deal with actually frying them. I have gotten to the point where doughnuts are manageable, but fries just take too much effort and way too much clean up.
And really, I have always loved oven fries. They are what my dad used cook and they will always be the best if you ask me.
Normally I would feel kind of lame about just showing you guys these Tandoori Butter Sweet Potato Fries. I mean fries are not much of a meal, but this is part of my whole “let’s get some sides + appetizers on this site” game plan that I told you about on Tuesday. PLUS, these are pretty picture perfect for this time of year and then hello, clearly these should be served at Thanksgiving. What could be better than spiced sweet potato fries and creamy dip on Thanksgiving. SO GOOD.
Ugh. I am sorry I am talking about Thanksgiving. I’ll stop now and switch to Halloween because these would be equally perfect for a pre-candy-coma snack. Or maybe even as some real food after all that candy. Or geez, maybe just have some before candy and some after candy. It’s all about a good balance on Halloween.
Oh and the color? It could not be more perfect for pre Halloween candy snackage. Or better yet, some Thursday night football eats? Yes, yes, yes.
See, so versatile for this time of year. Oh, and the cheese dip, you won’t regret making it. It’s the best kind of dip around.

Skinny Tandoori Butter Sweet Potato Fries w/Creamy Baked Harissa Feta.

Keyword: fries, sweet potato, Tandoori
Fries that are full of flavour, could be a meal on their own!
Ingredients
- 3 inch medium sweet potatoes cut into 1/4 wide strips
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
- 2 cloves garlic finely grated
- 1 teaspoon brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cumin
- 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon saffron optional
- 1/4-1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper depending on you taste
- 1/2 teaspoon salt + pepper
- chopped fresh cilantro + flakey sea salt for serving
Creamy Baked Harissa Feta
- 8 ounces crumbled feta cheese
- 4 ounces cream cheese softened
- 2 tablespoon greek yogurt
- 1-2 tablespoons harissa [homemade | https://dev.halfbakedharvest.com/homemade-harissa-spicy-red-pepper-sauce/] or store-bought (depending on you taste)
- 4 ounces brie rined removed + sliced into 1/3 inch thick slices
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
-
Place cut potatoes in a large bowl and drizzle with oil + melted butter. Add the parmesan cheese, garlic, brown sugar, cumin, smoked paprika, ginger, cinnamon, saffron (if using), cayenne, salt and pepper. Gently toss with your hands or two spatulas to evenly coat. Spread the fries among two baking sheets in one even layer. Bake for 15-20 minutes, then flip and bake for 15-20 minutes more at 400 degrees F. You want the sweet potatoes to be crispy, but not burnt. If you want perfectly crisp fries I recommend spreading the sweet potatoes on a greased wire rack on top of a baking sheet and baking them as directed above. But this way is a bit of a pain.
-
While the fries are baking, make the dip. Add the feta, cream cheese and greek yogurt to the bowl of a food processor. Puree for 2-3 minutes or until smooth and creamy. Add 1-2 tablespoons harissa (I used 2) and puree until evenly mixed. Spoon the cheese into a small oven safe dish. Place the brie overtop the dip.
-
Place the dish on a small baking sheet and bake at 400 degrees F. for 15- 20 minutes or until the cheese is hot throughout.
-
Remove the fries from the oven and sprinkle with chopped fresh cilantro and flakey sea salt. Serve the fries warm with a dollop of cheese for dipping.
Can you say addicting? Good thing they are healthy…ish.
Since I’ve been following your blog I find myself googling ingredients–you must have a wonderful pantry. I find myself running to Penzeys spices these days to get more.
Your kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom will be great–your pictures show really good choices.
I love Penzeys too!! Best place to get gifts for family and friends….don’t you think?
These fries are no explanation needed–amazing looking. For dinner. Heck, with pizza, why not make it that exciting. And yes, then the candy.
Wish I could have chickens where I live but they’re not allowed. Our yard is big enough but we have noise ordinances.
Laura–I’m really lucky to have a store to shop in because it’s so much nicer then doing it on a computer.
I have never been to Penzeys, but it sounds AMAZING!
Pizza, fries, cheese and candy, sounds perfect to me! Thanks so much, Laura! 🙂 Oh and what a bummer about the chickens. I am sorry!
I wish I had a Penzeys around me, it sounds incredible!
Thank you so much, Nancy!!
You need to Google it–they have a cute catalog that features personal stories and recipes. They have two stores in the Denver area.
I will!! Thank you!
Fries for dinner sounds perfectly reasonable to me…especially with that cheesy dip…so good. I lived on fries and gravy in college….this is a way better version of that..
Oh fries and gravy? I have to try that! Thanks Lisa!
I love harissa. I love sweet potatoes. I love cheese. So what is not to love about this? Nada. Making and face planting.
Hehe! Thank you so much, Meg! Happy almost friday!
I’m so happy I found your blog! The food is amazing. Thanks for sharing, I want to try these as soon as possible. They look sooooo goooood. 😀
THANK YOU! I am so excited to have you as a new reader and OMG, thank you for the kind words! 🙂
OMG, Tieghan! The dip, the FRIES! Whats next!? Love, love, love the flavor profile and that cheesy dip? I’ll never go back to just ranch again! And yes, this would make a lovely side, or main, any time! Even Thanksgiving! Thank you, Tieghan!
Thank you so much, Traci! Hope you are having a great week!
I am making these tonight! Sweet potato fries are one of my “go-to” snacks and I love harissa but have never thought to mix the two! Duh! I can already tell this is going to be a fav!
You will love these!
Thanks so much! 🙂
I can totally get behind anything that involves harissa and feta, let alone sweet potato fries! 🙂
It’s such a good combo for sure! Thanks Laura!
I could do fries for dinner all day, every day. Omg – the harissa feta sounds out of this world!!
Yes!! Fries for the win! Thanks Julie!
You are speaking to me! I would have never thought of sweet potato fries for Thanksgiving dinner, but the idea of pared down holiday with traditional foods gone casual is screaming my name. Thank you so much for this!
So glad you see my point!! 🙂
Thank you!
Those. Fries. OMG!!!!
Thanks Katrina!
I regularly eat fries for dinner, so I am 100% on board with this recipe! Yummmmmm
You totally know whats up! 🙂
Thanks!
I’m all in for fries for dinner, these look incredible!!
Ya!! Gotta love fries! 🙂
Thanks Laura!
ZOMG.
first of all, i’m all about this showing us more sides thing. i support that 103948504395%. just sayin’.
second, holy god these fries. my sweet potato oven fries never look that perfect. you are a magical kitchen fairy, i know it. i love the combination of flavors here and i really like that you paired sweet potato fries (which look awesome enough on their own) with a substantial dip to make a meal.
and… i guess third: eggs on everything yes. have you ever had chips and eggs? i enjoy dipping crispy oven fries into the yolks of fried eggs. i think it’s way more fun that soft boiled eggs + soldiers!
YA! So excited you are all for sides! 🙂
Thanks so much, Jamie! Oh AND so excited you are with me on the eggs too!
I looove sweet potatoes and people call me crazy all the time too. So maybe sweet potato lovers are crazy after all?! And I LOVE those Staub ramekins, I just debated with myself about buying some last week but they are ridiculously expensive 🙁
Haha! The crazies like sweet potato fries! 🙂
Thanks Nora! Oh and I love the Staub too…
Gosh this dip and those crunchy fries can totally become my dinner tonight!
Thanks so much, Ami! Hope you are having a great week!
Harissa feta? Yes please!
Thanks Sarah! Hope you are having a great week!
Tieghan, I saw this converted barn kitchen and totally thought of you – I love how the stove is kind of built into the wall. 😀

WOW! That is amazing! Thanks for sending along the link. Very inspiring! 🙂
Fries for dinner? Uh, yes please! I can’t believe these fries are oven-baked, not fried – they look SO crispy and delicious (I’ve been plagued by a long history of semi-soggy, soft oven fries). I’ll have to give this a try!
Thank you! I think the secret is not over crowding the pan. I always use two.
These are the most creative sweet potato fries…they look amazing! And that dip looks to die for 🙂
Thanks Denise!
That cheese dip looks phenomenal! And the fries! How do you cut your fries? They almost look curly. I love it.
Thanks Chelsea! I just cut them supper thin, no other special trick. Sorry, wish I had something more exciting for you!
These sweet potato fries and dip are perfection! I’d have a hard time not eating them with every mean (or as a meal 😉
Thank you! And yes, they are so addicting!
I have never made it or had it earlier… but today I am definitely going to make it. Thank you for this beautifully delicious post!
Thank you! hope you love these fries!
These looks INCREDIBLE! Trying asap! 🙂 By the way, I love your food photography! I just started my own food blog as I’m becoming an RD, and your photography is my inspiration!
THANK YOU!! Good luck with your site and let me know if you ever have any questions. 🙂
I am completely on board with having fries for dinner! Bookmarking this for my meal plan next week. 🙂
Made these delicious fries last night. Yes, my husband and I had french fries for dinner while we finished addressing New Years cards. We cheated and fried them in canola oil to save time. This dip is to die for – we didn’t have yogurt, so we added a bit of milk. We have some leftover an plan on baking it over some chicken this evening. Oh, and I made your homemade harissa and we loved it. Previously, I bought some harissa from a shop that sells middle eastern foods and it was unbearably hot. A teaspoon would kill you. I loved your version, which was much more tame. Glad I stumbled across this recipe from FoodGawker.
Just found your blog today. I tend to eat Paleo or clean… but I definitely am saving some of these recipes under Food Porn… because your photos are fabulous and truly pornographic! And I can certainly eat the sweet potato fries…. but I will also make some of your brownies because all of them look so good!!
Hi!! LOVE THESE FRIES been using regular paprika for them so far but I went to the store the other time to buy smoked…did you use spicy or sweet smoked paprika?
Thanks!!
While these fries look absolutely DELISH and I can’t wait to try them, Tandoori fries is a really inaccurate name for them! Tandoor means BBQ in India and Tandoori refers to anything cooked in a tandoor. However it’s also related to a very specific spice mix! From what I can tell there are no Indian spices here. I’m all for artistic liberties but it can be insulting to Indians when our dishes get twisted beyond recognition.
I adore your site! However, the video ads get in the way. They take up the space where the recipe calls for ingredients and directions, and there is no way of getting around it because the video scroll downs the screen as you scroll. Please change this!
Thank you so much for letting me know you are having issues. I will look into them right away! Hope you are having a great weekend! 🙂
How do you cut your fries to make your sweet potato fries so pretty?!
haha! Um, I am not sure. I just slice then real thin, like into matchsticks. I like them thin, so they get a little crispy. Please let me know if you have other questions. Hope you love this recipe! Thanks! 🙂
I didn’t have all the ingredients, but they still came out amazing! Highly recommended.
I am really happy to hear that Sarah! Thank you! xTieghan
