Mom’s Simple Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies…Best Oatmeal Chocolate Cookies.
If there is one thing my mom can make, and make really good, it’s cookies. Today I have Mom’s Simple Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies for you… They are the Best Oatmeal Chocolate Cookies Around!
She makes them one hundred times better than I could ever make them. I am positive it is because of the love she puts into every single individual cookie. Cheesy? Yes, but it is true. She takes the time to hand place the chocolate chips just to make sure every cookie has an acceptable amount. And while she can burn a loaf of bread like nothing, she never burns her cookies. Ok well, almost never. This is my mom we are talking about.
I am pretty sure that all six of my siblings would agree that mom is the very best cookie maker. And yeah, I am aware of the fact that a lot of kids probably feel this way about their moms. I get it, mom’s food just always tastes better.
BUT these cookies ARE better. I have never seen an oatmeal cookie recipe like it.
I actually was not planning on talking about these cookies today, but ever since this post I have had a ton of requests for the recipe. So when I when I woke up to a good foot and half of snow yesterday morning (no seriously that is no exaggeration and now it is over two feet with another foot expected!), I knew it was a cookie baking kind of day.
I mean, I even had these really crazy milkshakes all ready to go for today, but cookies just seemed like a better idea. For one, they are warm and that right there just sounds way better to me right now.
In full disclosure this is not really mom’s recipe. Her high school friend Lora gave her the recipe a long while back and she has been making them for us since she was nineteen. <– Yup, my mom was one of those teenage moms, but I am happy to say that my parents beat the statics and have been together since my mom was fifteen. That is so crazy.
Oh, and by the time my mom was twenty she had two kids, a husband and was still going to school full-time. Can not even imagine how she did it, but she did and she still managed to make a new batch of cookies every other day. And I do mean every other day. Chocolate freaks over here.
If you know my parents than you know they have a system when it comes to getting food on the table. Dad does dinner, mom does dessert. It worked for them and for us kids, thankfully (if mom had her way we would have been eating angel hair pasta with butter and salt every single night).
So that is how it worked, but ever since I started the blog there has been endless amounts of desserts around at pretty much all times. Oatmeal cookies have sadly become a thing of the past. This is the down fall of always having to try new desserts, you never get to make the ones you love twice.
Except for yesterday of course.
I gotta say, it felt good just to make an old and trusty recipe. One that I knew was going to turn out and not explode in my oven leaving me with a mess that I would probably have just left there and let burn away instead of actually cleaning the oven. Yeah, I do that all the time which is probably why all ovens hate me.
This is a recipe that never fails. Never, ever, ever fails. No matter where I am or at what elevation (trust me, elevation can be a pain in the butt) and no mater what oven I use, it always works. You can make them into cookie bars and even make them a tinsy bit healthier like I did here. Either way they will turn out delicious. The bars tend to be a little more crumbly than the cookies, but it does not matter. The texture is always spot on. Ok, well I mean, you shouldn’t over bake them. Under bake them? Sure, that is good (love an under baked cookie). But just do not over bake them. Any over baked cookie is not good and while I do think these are magic, they do not have super powers that can make an over baked cookie taste good.
That would pretty cool if they did though, right?
I know that it is Friday and baking may be the last thing on your mind. Trust me, I know the feeling and the couch is so calling my name, but these cookies need to be made today. Especially if it is cold and snowing like it is here. Every time I glance outside, the snow just gets higher and higher. All the more reason to stay inside and bake cookies if you ask me.
Plus, these are the most no-fuss, homemade, from scratch cookies you will ever encounter. Dump all the ingredients (minus the chocolate chips) into one bowl all at once. Beat them together and then stir in the chocolate chips. Use your hands to squeeze the dough into balls, bake and ten minutes later you will have the most amazing oatmeal chocolate chip cookies ever. No chilling, not weird ingredients and barely any time spent to make them.
Honestly, you could not pick a better thing to make today other than my Mom’s Simple Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies.
Ok, well you could make them for Super Bowl Sunday too. Or better yet just do both. Yes, do both!

If there is one thing my mom can make, and make really good, it's cookies!
Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups old fashioned oats
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup canola oil use a little more if dough seems is too dry
- 2 large eggs
- 4 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips or chocolate chunks + more if desired
Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with a silpat or parchment paper.
-
In a large mixing bowl or bowl of a stand mixer add the oatmeal, flour, sugar, brown sugar, baking soda, salt, canola oil, eggs and vanilla, beat until the dough is moist and all the ingredients are combined. The dough will be crumbly. Mix in the chocolate chips.
-
Using your hands clump together a tablespoon of dough. Use you hands to really squeeze the dough into a ball. If the mixture is not holding add 1 tablespoon more of oil. Place on prepared baking sheet. If your balls are a little crumbly do not worry, they will come together while baking. Repeat with remaining dough.
-
Bake for 10 -12 minutes or until set and golden. These are best right out of the oven, so eat up!
Oh, and a lot of times I swap the chocolate chips for chocolate chunks… just because I can… and they rule.
Nothing beats a good old-fashioned oatmeal choc-chip cookie imo. Crunchy yet gooey.
Yours are awesome perfection Tieghan, and a big ‘Thank You’ to your mum for sharing her recipe (I know my mum would never reveal her baking secrets :/)
Thanks Mike!
These look so warm and comforting! My mom never made a homemade cookie and when I was little I didn’t know they existed. I thought cookies came from a grocery store in packages! Well, I make chocolate cookies for my kids a lot and want to try these. My favorite is oatmeal raisin, but these will satisfy all of us! Thanks for the great story about your mom making them. Lucky you! She sounds like a wonderful mother!!
Awe! Thank you, Nancy! I am happy you get to make cookies for your kids now! Hope you guys all love these!
Oatmeal cookies are the best, especially the ones that came from mom a long time ago. I love the hunk of chocolate smack dab in the middle of the cookie.
That hunk of chocolate is the best! Thanks Norma!
Oatmeal chocolate chip cookies are my favourite type of cookies ever. and these look better than any I’ve made before. Love how simple the ingredients are and the fact that they’re never-fail! Just look at those gooey chocolate chips. You’re killing me here!
Oatmeal cookies are y favorite too! Thanks so much, Nicky!
These cookies look huge and soft….and all the chocolate melting out is making my drool! Oatmeal chocolate chip cookies are a classic and sometimes you just don’t mess with that. I love how you don’t clean your oven explosions. Me either. That’s what self cleaning ovens are for!
P.s although I wouldn’t eat it every night, angel hair pasta with butter and salt = SO GOOD
I have a self cleaning oven, but you cant use them up in the elevation I live it. It breaks ovens! UGH!!
Thanks Taylor!
I have my own amazing oatmeal raisin chocolate chip recipe but I really like the looks of your mom’s recipe! Thank you – can’t wait to try it out.
Thanks Meredith!
I will be making these this weekend for sure! Glad you shared the recipe and I loved reading about your parents! Stay warm!
So happy you enjoyed this post! Thanks Kathy and I hope you love these!
I love oatmeal raisin and my hubby is the chocolate guy. These look great!!!
Thanks Charlotte! I am not a raisin fan, but I love chocolate!
These cookies look perfect! That last shot with all the chocolate melting in the center is killing me.
Glad you like the oozy shots! I was of course second guessing them!
There’s definitely nothing better than a tried and true recipe like Mom made – as I get older, I treasure my mom’s recipes all the more. These do look like the BEST oatmeal chocolate chip cookies!
Oh I so agree!! My mom only has a few recipes, but they are all amazing!
Thanks Jeanette!
Lovely cookies! Love that warm oozing chocolate!
Oozing chocolate it the best! 🙂
Thank you, Jenny! Have a great weekend!
I love this post! And how sweet that your parents have been together since your mom was 15 🙂 Now I know what to bake this afternoon!
Thanks Danelle! Hope you love these!
There is not a single thing in the world that compare to mom’s cookies!! Your mom’s look so outrageously delicious! Next time I go to chocolat chip cookieville, I’m taking your momma’s recipe with me!!
Yes, yes, yes! I do agree! 🙂
Thanks Julia!
Love those pics with the melty, gooey chocolate. I’m on a massive oatmeal cookie kick at the moment and these sound like they’d totally hit the spot.
Thank you so much, Kathryn! I think I am always on an oatmeal cookie kick!
Thanks so much for sharing your mom’s treasured recipe with us! And yes, what you say is true: Moms food always tastes better—my mom isn’t much of a cookie baker (she leaves that department to me 😉 ) but she can make a pretty dang good loaf of homemade bread. Is it weird that I want these cookies right now even though it’s only 8:30 am??
Oh homemade bread!! Lucky! That is the best!
Thanks Sarah!
YUM!! And how awesome that these are vergan! 🙂
THanks Hannah! There is actually some eggs…..sorry!
I have a thing for oatmeal cookies, love these!
I am a major oatmeal cookie lover too! 🙂
Just wondering, the directions say to combine all the ingredients including eggs, but eggs are not in the ingredient list?
Hey Casie! It is 2 eggs and I have fixed the recipe. Sorry about that!
Hope you love these!
Tieghan! These look so yummy! And I have all the ingredients at home so these are happening today! Just a quick question.. I saw eggs in the instructions but not in the ingredient list, so what are the amounts?
2 eggs! So sorry about that. I fixed the recipe. Hope you love these!
That oozing chocolate is CALLING my name!
Oozing chocolate is the best!
I’m a sucker for oatmeal cookies. These look so plump and packed with chocolate.
Who could not be a sucker for oatmeal cookies? I love them too!
Thanks Brian!
Oh man….I’m ashamed to admit that some drool may be dripping out right now. Im trying to contain myself and not run into the kitchen to start baking since I have school in a couple of hours! Tieghan, can you deliver them to me please? 🙂
Haha! I wish I could send you some!
Thanks Hilary!
Oh yum. This is the second chocolate chip recipe I’ve read this morning and in fact I have just eaten two cookies with my tea for breakfast. I can’t wait to try this recipe.
Cookie for breakfast? You are a smart women!
I have never been a big fan of oatmeal cookies, but these look pretty darn good! Especially with all that melty chocolate. 🙂
Melty chocolate always makes everything better!
These sound sooooo wonderfully simple and delicious! MUST try! I think I will try it with the coconut oil.
Thank you so much, Sophia! The coconut oil works great!
Love the chocolate oozing out! Oatmeal cookies are the best, must try your mama’s version. 🙂
Thank you, Nicole!!
These look perfect. Mom’s cookies are the best!
Thanks Katrina!
I’ve never made cookies with oil before! Definitely trying these…probably tonight! Thanks for sharing!
Oh I hope you love these!! Let me know!
These are gorgeous cookies and I love the idea of using coconut oil. Big yes to chocolate chunks too – I think you just solved my Friday night dessert dilemma! 😉
Thanks Laura! I cannot imagine you in a dessert dilemma!
I saw this recipe half an hour ago… now I am enjoying them warm from the over! Thanks so much for the yummy recipe! Hopefully I don’t eat all of them before I am able to share!
Ahh!! YAY!! So happy you loved them! Thanks for making them today!!
Sometimes Mom’s food is just the best and it’s always nice to make a reliable recipe every once in a while. Those fails take their toll! I love a good oatmeal chocolate chip cookies packed with chips.!
The fails do take their tolls!!
Thanks Cindy! Hope you are settling into your new home!
That extra love ingredient really does make a difference. 🙂 These look scrumptious!
It so does!
Thank you, Stephanie!
You mentioned brown sugar in the instructions but I don’t se them on the ingredient list. Can you advise?! Thanks!
Hey Laura, the brown sugar is in there, but you just need 1 cup. Hope you love these! 🙂
I am so glad I pinned this….and then actually read the whole post instead of just speeding to the recipe.
I had my oldest son when I was just 18 and his father 21. We are still together….working on year 16 at the moment.
Two more kiddos later and lots of learning in the kitchen, I am now the mom that makes so many cookies my kids don’t even ask to lick the beater anymore.
Congrats on coming from a rad family. It’s nice to know you come from a family tough enough to beat statistics, isn’t it?!
I’m making these cookies stat.
Awe! I have to share this with my mom. THANK YOU and congrats on 16 years that is amazing!!
Thanks so much for reading!
I love that this recipe uses no butter! I’m going to try it with coconut oil and big chocolate chunks.
Thanks hope you love them!
Baking is the FIRST thing on my mind on Fridays! And, actually, on all days. I love the texture of these. Super chewy delicious.
Friday baking the best. I love it!
Thanks Joanne!
I can’t resist a good oatmeal and chocolate chip cookie.
These look amazing. Have you ever tried making them with butter?
Thanks April! I have never tried them with butter, but only because I think oil is what makes these cookies.
Hope you get to try them!
Tieghan, these look delicious and just what I have been looking for in an oatmeal cookie! Do you think using the instant oatmeal would make a difference? Thanks, Rosemerry
Hmm, I am not sure. I have made them with instant in a pinch, but to be honest I cannot remember the outcome. I know we ate them, but I am not sure about the texture. I still think they would taste delicious though!
Let me know and I hope you love these!
hi, the difference with instant oatmeal is that they are cut up into tiny flakes and are not whole oats which are much bigger and give more texture and bite to the cookies. With the whole oats you get alot more crunch to it. Using instant oatmeal u will still get edible cookies but you wont be able to taste the awesomeness of these cookies!
I found this recipe today and decided I had to have these cookies right then. The only thing I didn’t have on hand was old fashioned oats, I used instant oats… Luckily, I stopped at half the amount of coconut oil to see what the texture would be like and it was actually too much! They were super greasy but actually baked alright and tasted delicious.
I wouldn’t use instant oats next time, they throw everything off. I will definitely try them again with rolled oats. Thank you for sharing, they were awesome!
So happy you loved these! Thanks Nadia!!
I made these earlier this week, very yummy! I just couldn’t make it through baking the entire batch though because the dough was so crumbly. I know you said that’s normal, but it was so crumbly and fiddly that my patience just couldn’t handle it! It was already oily enough so I didn’t want to add any more oil. The cookies that I did bake though were very delicious! 🙂
Oh man! Very happy you loved them, but you can also bake the cookies into bars and skip the rolling process.
Thanks so much!
These look amazing Tieghan – hugs to your mum and you for sharing these gems!
Thank you, Shashi!
Can I use unsalted butter?mrcds_ If so, how much?
I have never used butter with this, but I would use equal amounts of butter to oil. But melt the butter first. Hope it works for you!
Hi! I’m a little late, but I just made these and they are SO GOOD. I loooove the coconut oil. Also, I did add some melted butter at the end because I didn’t have enough coconut oil, and it worked out just fine. 🙂
So happy you loved these and the coconut oil works great doesn’t it?
Thanks Meg!
Made these for movie nite last night for Johnny & I watching blue jasmine after a Mars Attacks warm- up!
Did you ever try lining the oven floor with aluminum foil to catch food explosions?
Loved your blog! I am a former high school physics teacher — I am so impressed by you !! If you ever need fixiz help, I’d be glad to help.
Your blog pal,
Lydia
Thank you so much, Lydia!!
I just made these the other day and they were delicious! I didn’t have any chocolate chips so I used M&Ms and it turned out amazing! Thank you so much!
M&M’s! YUM! Thanks Margaret! So happy you loved these!
Ick! I don’t know what happened but I made these and they’re not good! It tastes like there’s something missing… They taste very flat. Could we sub butter for the oil?
Hey Ls, I am really sorry these cookies did not work for you. Are you sure you included everything? I have sub melted butter, but do prefer oil. Let me know if you have any questions, I would love to help get these cookies right. They truly are my families favorite.
Thanks!
Hi! I just made them and they are AMAZING!!! I was very curious to see how they would turn out-I’ve never made cookies with oil before. I was very pleasantly surprised!
YA!! So happy you loved these! Thanks Maggie!
Made these with Bob’s Red Mill gluten-free flour and half and half melted coconut oil and canola oil. The dough smelled/tasted funny (sort of sour/metallic). I added a little cinnamon because of that, but the weird smell/taste completely went away in the baking. They turned out great. Even the picky one in the house liked them (and never knew there was anything “different” about them).
That’s weird the dough smelled funny. I do not use gluten free flowers, but maybe it was that?
Very happy everyone loved these! Thanks so much!
sadly I followed the recipe exactly (and I am a pretty experienced baker) and the cookies were excessively crumbly (I used melted coconut oil) never flattened out with cooking and were a crumbly mess and almost impossible to eat. Not only that, but I definitely got double the cookies you stated in your recipe. Not sure what happened 🙁 I have double checked the recipe again and again and I did everything exactly as you stated!
Can you use vegetable oil instead?
I have never tried vegetable oil, but if you can I would stick with canola or melted coconut oil. I think the flavor might be off with vegetable oil. Hope you love these! Thanks!
I made these today and they were awesome! Indeed the best oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. I used only 2 cups of chocolate chips and i still found that it was abit too much. Next time i would start with 1.5cups and add more if desired. I also used 1/4cup coconut oil, 3/4cup canola oil just because i wanted to finish up the leftover coconut oil in my kitchen. But the dough felt really oily while i was making the cookie balls with my hands and there was a small pool of oil left in the mixing bowl when i was done. Do you think it will turn out as good if i reduced the oil to like 1/2 or 3/4 cup?
So happy you loved these!!
I would personally use all the oil because the cookies may turn out dry, but you can try!!
Thanks again!
These cookies were soooo gooood! I swapped out half of the all purpose flour with whole wheat flour (and added a touch of cinnamon) and they were amazing. Thank you for sharing this recipe!
Thank you so much, Cameron! I am thrilled you loved these!
Tried this out yesterday after dinner and my boyfriend really loved them, he ate two of these and fell asleep right after with a smile on his face, lol. We just ate them directly when they’d finished baking as you recommended and they were so soft in the middle and a bit crunchy on the outside. Although this morning they were very hard to eat, probably because I didn’t cover them with anything overnight… Didn’t have any brown sugar left so I just replaced it with marble syrup 😛
So happy you loved these! Thanks!
I’ll admit it. I was very skeptical but had the ingredients and gave the recipe a shot… and you are right, they are the best oatmeal chocolate chip cookies I have had. Very impressive, and thank you.
I agree that the dough is oily (I used coconut oil), and maybe I did not need all two cups of chocolate chips (and I’m addicted to chocolate), but these are simple and fabulous.
So happy you loved these!! Thanks Alison!
Do you really mean 4 tsps of vanilla? Jsut checking…..:)
Yup, but feel free to use less if you wish. Hope you love these!
I’ll never make these again because it was awful to work it before putting them into the oven.
Made these last week and even though the dough is crumbly and tricky, they did amazingly stick together with lots of hand rolling and are delicious! My husband loves them. I froze half. I used only 3/4 of the oil and they still worked. Has anyone put in raisins? I heard they could be made into bars, so would be great if you were short on time. Next time might try the raisins and/ or walnuts!
These are great as bars!! I am not a raisins person, but I am sure they would work great!
Thanks!
Oh and walnuts too!
Hi! LOVE these cookies, they are my go to cookie now – my whole family loves them! Sometimes instead of rolling them into individual cookies, I lay the dough out flat and bake it that way and cut them into square cookie bars after. Amazing!! Thanks for posting!
SO happy you loved these cookies! Thanks!
These were some of the most AMAZING cookies I’ve ever had!
YAY!! So happy you loved these. THANKS!
I’d have to say not impressed they fell apart followed recipe exact and cooked one batch fell apart while I was rolling them in my hand added more oil dry we’re not staying together and when they came out they fell apart all the dough and the cooked went in the garbage what did I do wrong horrible recipe
Thank you, and your Mom for such a great recipe! These are officially my husbands favourite recipe. Everyone at his work is always asking for them :). Sometimes they crumble, but they are still adored.
Made these today. Followed recipe except used 2 tsp vanilla instead of 4. Instead of rolling into a ball, I just plopped blobs of dough with a spoon on cookie sheet. They turned out perfectly and are delicious! Thx!
These are fabulous! The dough was a bit tricky, but I trusted you and as always you came through for me! I just went with it and you were absolutely right, the cookies ends up turning out perfect even though I was nervous when they went in the oven since the dough didn’t clump together perfectly. These cookies are amazing out of the oven and just as delectable the next day. They stay soft and chewy which I love. Thanks for sharing your family recipe. This one is a keeper. I may try making this into bars as well, as some other people have suggested. Cheers!
Hey Tieghan! I’m hannah from Hannah’s Gluten Free Adventure! I tried out your cookies but made them gluten-free! They are absolutely delicious! Thank you so much for the great recipe! Please check out my version!
https://hannahsglutenfreeadventure.wordpress.com/2014/06/20/oatmeal-chocolate-chip-cookies/
Made a batch-and-a-half of these last night. Less than 24 hours later, they are all GONE. Success!!!!
Haha! The same thing happens over here. So glad you loved these! Thanks!
Made these for breakfast this morning (it’s Canada Day – a holiday here – and plus I’m a grownup so I can do what I want!) haha. They turned out amazing but I followed exactly to spec and got over 50 small cookies using a tablespoon to measure the batter as directed. Next time I’ll just eyeball spoonfuls for bigger cookies like yours in the picture!
So happy you loved these and happy Canada Day!! Sorry about the tiny cookies though!
Thanks again! 🙂
By the way, I only had instant oats and that worked out fine. I also did 50/50 chocolate chips and peanut butter chips. This recipe rocks! Crumbly but it works when you squeeze them together in your hand.
Just had to comment to say, these are truly absolutely fantastic! Never really know when you find something on Pinterest, but I think I hit the jackpot on this one… Thank you so much for sharing!
Made these today and they were great! They were nice and hard on the outside and chewy in the inside. This was my first time making cookies from scratch too. I did use vegetable oil instead of canola oil simply cause I didn’t have any and I felt to lazy to drive to get some lol. Either way they came out great.
ABSOLUTE AMAZING!!! I bake a lot and have tired hundreds of different choc/oatmeal cookies and I saw yours and really liked how kid friendly it was. My daughter had a friend over and I decided on this recipe! My family and friends told me to never go back!!!! Thank you for sharing!!!! YUMMMMMMM!!
YES!! So excited you love this recipe. It is my families favorite!! THANK YOU!
made these cookies today and they turned out wonderfully!! very soft and chocolatey. kids absolutely LOVE them!!!!
i did however use wax paper accidentally instead of parchment paper, which left our kitchen smoky. switched with foil on the second batch. next time i will add some kind of chopped nut to it.
this will be my secret weapon at the next family function 🙂 thanks!!
YES!!! Thanks so much and I am so happy you loved these! 🙂
Oatmeal chocolate chip cookies are my favorite, but I’ve never made them myself before. I just whipped up a batch of these, and they will definitely be my go-to from now on! Thank you!
So happy your love these, Becca!! Thank you!
canola oil is a vegetable oil.
So I made these, but decreased the flour to 1 c and added 1/3 c flax seed, used the coconut oil and added shredded coconut, annnnnd had to fight my husband off them (and he is a cook!) They were supposed to be my lactation cookies. Needless to say, theyre amazing, hubby wants to bring the recipe to work. So so easy and so delicious. Next time I will add some brewers yeast and hide them very well.
Loving you swaps!! So happy you love these. Thanks!
Wow! I know there are tons a great comments here, but I have to add another- best cookie recipe ever! I live in Thailand and use a crappy toaster oven that usually results in mediocre baking- but not this time. I also used whole wheat flour because that’s all I had and they were still so good. Everyone loved these cookies. My partner says- “your cookies were perfect”–(novice baker here, I try sometimes)! Thank you!
So happy you love these!! Thank you!:)
Hey Tieghan — quick question. I want to “make” these cookies with my little cousin who is coming over in two days, but I want to have the dough ready the night before so we just cut out the dough into fun shapes and pop them in the oven. Does this dough chill well in the fridge overnight?
Hi! The dough does chill well in the fridge, but I would probably not try cutting these into shapes as the dough is crumbly. If you have a cookie mold that might work better. Please let me know if you have any more questions.
Thanks,
Tieghan!
I made these this weekend and they are just beyond brilliant! Thank you for sharing!
So happy you loved these!! Thanks! 🙂
Hi. I am so excited to make these cookies but I don’t have old fashioned oatmeal. Can I use quick-cooking instead?
Thank Janis!! Quick cooking works great too. Hope you love these!
This cookie recipe is a blockbuster! My friends keep on asking me to bake more. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! So thrilled you all love these!
wow, I must of done something wrong, it was dripping with oil and didn’t hold together. Yuck!
UGH. I am SO SORRY!! Did you fallow the recipe exactly?
I followed the recipe ALMOST exactly, except I was out of vanilla. 🙁 And knew I needed something more to help hold it together. So I added about a quarter cup of peanut butter, and it worked perfectly. My husband and I are enjoying these right now, and YUM! SO good! I did end up with about four dozen, and the balls were tablespoon/handful-sized. I was pleasantly surprised with how many cookies I got from the batch of dough! Thank you for this recipe!
So happy you loved these and great idea with the peanut butter!! 🙂
I’ve been on a quest for a long time to find the best (really the best) choc-o-chip oatmeal cookie and this is the bomb! Chewy, chocolatey, esp good when slightly undercooked. I didn’t have brown sugar so I substituted with white sugar, and I substituted 1/2 cup of ground flaxseed for 1/2 cup flour. Best I’ve made. Thank you, Tieghan and Mom!
SO AWESOME!! I am thrilled you loved these and great idea with the flax!
hi,
these cookies suck. thy crumbled everywhere and made a mess and they taste like rocks!!! wtf!!!!
Wow! These cookies are fan-freaking-tastic! Please thank your mom for sharing her delish recipe. I could eat these for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.. But wait, maybe I already have!
SO happy you love these and yes, I will for thank her for you! 🙂 Oh and these cookies for breakfast, lunch and dinner? Totally happens over here all the time!
Oh my gosh, these look sooo fantastic! I stumbled onto your blog and I am not much of a baker, so a no-fail recipe sounds like just what I need! 🙂
I cannot wait to try these – love that you use coconut oil! Have you ever experimented with substituting applesauce for some portion of the oil? I’m not afraid of a fat gram :), but thought the moisture and appley flavor might be a nice addition, don’t want to mess with the texture, though! Thank you for sharing this delicious-sounding recipe.
Hey Beth! A few readers have actually tried that with success, but I never have.
Thanks so much for the kind words and I hope you love the cookies!
j’ai cuisiné ces biscuits deux fois déjà et ils ont été un vrai succès! merci pour cette savoureuse recette! 🙂
I am shocked that these worked for so many people! They were such a mess for me. They would just not stay together and trying to form them into balls was awful. I felt like I was squeezing out loads of oil as I did so I definitely didn’t want to add more to help them stay together! And after they baked, the taste was only okay. Definitely not worth it. I followed the recipe exactly except I halved it — which I’m definitely glad for! I think there are just too many oats and choc chips for everything else to hold them together. oh well!
Hey Amanda, I am sorry these cookies where not for you. Thank you for giving them a try.
THESE ARE DELICIOUS! By far the best oatmeal chocolate chip cookies I’ve ever made. I added raisins and cinnamon to mine though. So fantastic. I will be making these again.
SO excited you love these! THANKS! Love the addition of cinnamon. Perfect for fall!
These cookies are so delicious! I used 1/3 cup coconut oil and 2/3 vegetable oil, since that’s what I had, and the cookies turned out awesome! One adaptation is simply to use two spoons to scoop the cookies out… my dough was really sticky and I couldn’t form it into balls with my hands very well, so I scooped the dough with one spoon and slid it onto the pan with another spoon. YUM! Thanks for this recipe!
Interesting recipe. I questioned the amount of coconut oil but rationalized that it could have just as easily been butter. They certainly are chocolatey and moist. Should I make again, I will mix in the chocolate chips by hand to more evenly distribute through dough. Too few chips in the first couple of pans and too many in the last two pans. I would have liked more of the oatmeal flavor to come through and instead feel I taste the coconut oil. I also felt I had to bake a little longer – could just be my oven though.
Happy you loved these! Thanks Susan and yes, adding the chocolate chips as you roll the cookies is a great idea!
Thank you so much for this recipe! I made them on Thursday night and they still taste as good as they did after I took them out of the oven, which I find to be rare for cookies. I added some toasted pecans and they compliment the nutty flavor of the oatmeal perfectly. Thanks for sharing!
SO happy you love these cookies! Thanks!
Things I love: the internet, cute blogs, the chance to read comments about a recipe before making it, gracious blog hostesses (you!) and your mom’s cookie recipe. Thank you, thank you…it worked perfectly. I came looking for an oat/choc. chip cookie that had no peanut butter or nuts required and hoped to find one I could sub coconut oil and gf flour—lo and behold here was just the thing. These will be lactation cookie treats for my daughter and are about 97% within her dietary guidelines and the only smidge bad part is the butterfat in the choc. chips. Loved the great, illustrative photos and tips you provided. I can see this recipe will be used again and again and can’t wait to teach my new grandbaby to bake it with me someday too. A very kid-friendly recipe. (Bonus for me was that handling the dough with the coconut oil gave me a mini hand spa treatment!)
THANK YOU! I am so excited you loved this recipe. It truly is the best! 🙂
Hi! Quick question about these cookies – I’m mid-baking them at the moment. I see so many comments, and in your notes, about how the dough will be very crumbly. Mine dough is actually quite sticky, not even in the realm of crumbly. I’ve double-checked the recipe a few times and I’ve seemed to do everything right…have they ever turned out sticky-not-crumbly on your end, or have I done something majorly wrong? Thanks! And can’t wait to eat them when they’re out of the oven!
Hey Brooke,
I would not worry, I am not sure what makes the difference, but I too have had batches that are not crumbly at all. It is the weirdest thing, but it does seem to happen sometimes. Hope you love the cookies!!
I was very skeptical at first – how could this recipe be so easy?! Dump everything into one bowl not creaming first?! What?! It was easy and it was delicious. I also found that refrigerating the dough for a couple of minutes before baking really helps to prevent too much spread that results in thinner cookies. Used coconut oil and these were wonderfully fragrant, chewy, decadent and delicious. Thanks so much for sharing!
So excited you love these cookies!! Thanks Juliana!! 🙂
So, as soon as i read your blog/recipe i just had to make it! But quickly realized when i went throuh my ingredients that i barely had enough oats to bake 1/2 the batch…so i did anyways just to fix the craving!!! And oh man, was it not only so easy to out together but tasted delicious when it came out!!! I can’t stop eating them!!!
Thank you!! I am so exited you are loving these cookies! 🙂
I used vegetable oil and they were a little dry but still delicious. Do you think the type of oil makes a huge difference? Also did you use kosher salt or regular iodized table salt?
I used 1 cup of raisins and 1 cup of chocolate chips. My toddler loved them, thanks for sharing!
Oh and I also used 1 tsp of cinnamon too 🙂
Yum! Love cinnamon!
Hey Kimberly, I always use canola or melted coconut oil, so I am thinking that vegetable oil might be the difference. These cookies are never dry for me. I use kosher salt.
Sorry they where a little dry, but so glad you all still loved them. THANKS!
Hi- I Googled “oatmeal and chocolate chip cookie” on Wednesday afternoon to find a recipe I could make with my two eldest daughters (6 and not-quite-4), and yours looked the nicest. It worked really well with them “helping” me, as well as being delicious. We used sunflower oil and far too many chocolate chips (yes, it seems that is possible). I’ll be re-using the recipe- and when my eldest took some to school today, two of her friends asked her for the recipe. It might become a staple here in Switzerland… 😉
Thanks so much!! I am so glad these cookies are hit!! 🙂
Hi, I love trying your recipe, but I just want 12 cookies, my question is can I divide the ingredients in half, is this going the change the flavor of the cookie?, thank you very much for you help.
HI! You can easily divide this recipe in half. Enjoy!
Tieghan, I just made these cookies with pure olive oil and these are the BOMB!!! Delicious delicious!!
So happy you love them!! THANKS!
Oh my! I just made these for my “birthday cookies” and they are so yummy! Only thing I did was add a little cinnamon and chopped pecans. I may never make butter based cookies again. Thank you!
That is awesome! Happiest Birthday to you! So happy you loved these! 🙂
These are the best oatmeal chocolate chip cookies i have ever had. I even had to substitute a few things(I ran out of oil so i had to use butter then i only had quick oats) the first time i made then. Still amazing! Thank you so much for the recipe!
do you think it would be alright to sub old fashioned oats for quick cooking oats? 🙂
I think so, but the texture might be a bit different. Hope you love these!
These cookies are our new favorites! Thank you so much.
My daughter found this (our new) GO-TO recipe and we make them in a 9×13 pan instead, to save time & handwork!
So happy you guys love this recipe! Making them into bars is so good, we do it all the time! 🙂
Thanks!
I made these today and they were awesome!
Thanks Kathy! So happy you loved them! 🙂
I made these today with my 4 year old. I did use vegetable oil because I did not have canola and was out of coconut. They taste great and my daughter had a great time mixing with her hands. I don’t see these lasting long around here but I do put a slice of bread in with my cookies. The bread hardens and the cookies don’t so they last a little longer. Fantastic cookies! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much, Mollie!! So excited you guys love these cookies!!
Hi! I would like to try your recipe coz it looks delish and amazing…I just have a question before I make this cookies is it ok if I use melted butter instead of canola oil? Thanks
Hi! I would like to try your recipe coz it looks delish and amazing…I just have a question before I make this cookies is it ok if I use melted butter instead of canola oil? Thanks
Hey Camille, melted butter will work fine. Hope you love these!
I have ALWAYS loved oatmeal cookies!!!! I came across your blog while I was looking for a new cookie recipe to try for my classmates, and this cookie did NOT disappoint!!! I love how the coconut oil almost makes an “Almond Joy” party in my mouth! I used all of the ingredients you listed, plus an additional 1/4 cup of coconut oil(my batch was too dry at first), and added dried cranberries. (I’m not a huge raisin fan, but can almost eat my weight in cranberries! Ha!) Needless to say, my instructors and classmates enjoyed every last one! Thank you for sharing the joy from your childhood to others!!!
YEAH!! SO exited these cookies are hit with you! 🙂
Thanks for all the kind words!
Hi Tieghan-
I have made these cookies a few times now and I love the extra flavor that the coconut oil brings. I am in Boston and we are about to get a blizzard of epic proportions, or so the the forecasters are telling us. I am using my snow day tomorrow as a baking day as long as we don’t lose power, as I’m cursed with an electric stove. Thanks for sharing this awesome recipe and the stories of your mom-love them both!
-Adele
OH how fun!! Enjoy your snow day and thanks for all these kinds words!! 🙂
Hey tieghan,
Your cookies where decadent! I just finished baking them and could not wait to write to you. Plus they were really easy to make for an amateur like me! My parents and my sister loved them.
These cookies are awesome in every way! Perfection…
Thank you so much, Anna!! 🙂
How would you substitute maple syrup for the sugar… would that work?
I made these once and they are AMAZING! Just want to try it out with less sugar!!
Michelle
Hey Michelle,
I am not sure. Maybe equal amounts, but I am worried the maple with make these a bit moist. Let me know how it goes!
Hi Tiaghan!
So happy to be trying one of your recipes again! I made these tonight! I was so bummed my dough turned out like a cookie dough though instead of your more crumbly mix. I either used too big of eggs or measured the oil a little sloppily, maybe I only added 2 cups oats instead of 2 1/2. Whatever it was it didn’t matter too much. They turned out great!! I still want them to look like yours. My cookies have a slight shine to their crispy top and so maybe they taste slightly different from yours but at least they still taste great and I’m sure they’re not too far off. I love this cookie and it’s so nice to tell friends they have coconut oil instead of butter. I little Ooooo factor:) By the way, I read someone commenting on your parents ages when married. Was that the case? They were married young? I’m so happy to read how young love can really last. I was married three months after I turned 17, my husband is five years older than me. We celebrated last December 21 years. Still madly in love too.
This is hands down the best recipe ever for oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. I have to admit I prefer this over CCC for this is so soft and chewy too! Thanks a ton for sharing this recipe. Looking forward to trying out other recipes from your blog. Oh, and did I mention that I’m in love with your photography skills? 🙂
AWE! THANK YOU!
So excited you loved them, THANKS!!
Made these again to get them perfect like yours. Success! My husband walked around the house while eating them repeating, “These are good! Man! These are good!”
Thanks Taighan
SO happy you loved them! THANKS!!
I made these with milk chocolate chips instead of semisweet and they tasted just a little more amazing, IMO. They were SO delicious!
So happy you loved them, Thanks!!
Can I freeze these? If so is it better to freeze the dough or the baked cookie?
These have become a family fave. I bake half and freeze the rest of the dough so we don’t go too crazy with the sweets. It is probably blasphemy to say, but there are maybe a few too many choc chips for my tastes, I’m always left with a bunch at the bottom of the bowl that never get incorporated into the dough. I’ve cut the chips by 1/2 cup and it is perfect for us. Great and easy recipe!
Just made these last night, used half butter and half oil instead of all oil ( i couldn’t get over the no-butter thing LOL!) and they came out amazing (judging by how many my boyfriend and I have already eaten) . Even better the next day. Really love this recipe!
Haha, I totally get that!! 🙂
So happy you loved them, thanks!!
I made these today and they are fantastic. I think my next batch I will substitute the chocolate chips for raisins. Do you happen to have the calorie count per serving?
Hey Emily,
So happy you liked these, thanks!! I am sorry, but I don’t know the calories.
I found this recipe on Pinterest and I just made these cookies. They are so simple and so delicious! Thank you for sharing!
I have made chocolate chip cookies a zillion times and this was the best chocolate chip cookie I have ever made, hands down.
For a minute, I couldn’t find this website again and I was gonna flip out because I didn’t save the recipe! Thankfully, here I am. I doubt I will try another choc chip recipe ever again! Yummmmmm!!!
Hi! Just wanted to let you know how much I love this recipe! I have been making them since you posted them and they have always been a hit!!! Thank you for sharing!!! 🙂
Absolutely the best oatmeal chocolate chip cookies I’ve ever had! And my family had a bakery! I’m going to make these on a regular basis now! Thank you so much for the recipe!
These cookies are amazing! How long do they last in the refrigerator?
HI! I never keep mine in the fridge, but maybe 3-4 days. THANKS!
I sent a batch of these with my daughter to take back to university a few weekends ago. When she called to tell me how amazing they were I knew that the recipe was a keeper. I used the coconut oil (which my daughter really liked and commented on) and followed the recipe exactly – except for the fact that I had quick oats. I wish I had cut back on the chocolate chips – as recommended by others – as we both found there to be too many chocolate chips for the batter. It made more than expected using the tablespoon measure – so I froze some of the batter. Just used it today to make up another 16 cookies. I did have a little bit of a problem with a few of them them crumbling and falling apart while baking, but for the most part, they were fine. I think had there been fewer chocolate chips, I wouldn’t have had that problems. Excellent recipe…thanks so much.
SO Happy the cookies are a hit! THANK YOU!!!
These are great cookies. I had some dark chocolate chips to use up,made only half batch which is good for us, serves the sweet tooth and yet fresh and hot. Oh ya nice melted chocolate over oatmeal. I’m in heaven right now. Do I dare to have another before dinner?
So happy you like them! Thank you!
Hi! I just want to ask if this recipe will work without the chocolate chips? I love them as it is but a friend of mine requested for a plain oatmeal cookie. I don’t want to try other recipes because I already love the texture and chewiness of these cookies.
Hi Margie! Yes, they will be great! Easier to roll too!
Hi, Tieghan! It’s raining over here in NJ right now and my boys know exactly what they want to make, so here I am again! 😉
Seriously… Thank you SOOO much for sharing this most wonderful, truly amazing recipe! I’ve shared your cookies with so many of my family and friends as well as my kids’ teachers over the last year, and every single one of them absolutely loved the cookies. They really are a total winner! (And you know teachers always know what’s super good, given the amount+variety of cookies they’re given throughout their careers! :o)
I can’t thank you enough, Tieghan!!!
AWE!!! Thank you so much! I am thrilled you love the cookies! 🙂
tried this recipe and it’s freakin” good! moist, and delicious and even my mom love it! 🙂
So happy you loved this! Thanks Jenna!!
I’m so happy I found your recipe again! It’s been my favorite for the last year, and suddenly it dropped out of the search results due to a spate of coconut oil cookie recipes. They don’t hold a candle to this one.
hehe! Thank you so much! SO happy these cookies are a hit!
New go-to oatmeal cookie recipe! We made these vegan by subbing the eggs for 1/2c applesauce. They came out perfectly! Soft, chewy, & just the right amount of sweetness. Instead of the regular chocolate chips, we mixed in 1 cup craisins into the whole batch and 1/2 cup white chocolate chips into half the batch. The cookies are delicious both warm or cooled. Thanks!
SO happy you love the cookies! THANKS!
Would the cookie dough chill or freeze well? I’m thinking of making the dough the night before, chilling them over night then baking them the next day.
Hi, I have never put the dough in the fridge, but I think it will be fine. Hope you love the cookies! Oh and same goes for freezing, just make sure to keep the dough covered.
I’m convinced, I’m making them tomorrow! These are my husbands favorite and I love the fact that it’s a one bowl method. Glad to have found you!
I love your post, Tieghan! I will definitely make these, but not with Canola Oil. The entire Canola oil crop is now GMO! I’ll try peanut oil, maybe half unsalted butter. One trick I use to make all my cookies healthier…I take away maybe 2 tbsp. of the flour and add in ground flax seed. This gives the cookies much more fiber, which is important to conteract the sugar! Thanks for the recipe!
Made them…they were a big hit with the family. You’re right. They are definitely a No-Fuss type of cookie. This recipe is a keeper in this home and I look forward to trying your “healthier” version. Thanks for sharing this.
Many Blessings!
…Also, I did use the coconut oil which I really enjoyed. We L-O-V-E our chocolate here so we did not cut back and I got, “These are the best cookies ever!”
I’ve tried this recipe for our breakfast, it’s really delicious to us. My children even asked me to make it for them tomorrow. Thank for sharing.
I’ve been meaning to thank you for this recipe from your mum. I love it so much, I’ve made it so many times since I found it here a couple of months ago because the cookies are so good. Thank you! Cheers.
THANK YOU! So happy you love the cookies! Have a happy New Year!
I was looking through your top 10 go to post and saw these. Obviously I had to make them immediately. Theyre AMAZING!! These are going to be a go to for me from now on!
YEAH!! So happy you made them and loved them, thanks! Happy New Year!
Hi, I’m Maria, from Portugal. Just to let you know that these are The. Best. Oat. Cookies. Ever! but you already know that 🙂
Thank you and your mum for such a great recipe.
My absolute favourite recipe for making choco chip cookies! So quick, very little mess, and, so delicious! Thank you.
Love these cookies 🙂 have made multiple times! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Rose!
Just made these today and they are amazing!! I added 1/2 a cup of peanut butter to the batter and it was amazingly nutty and good
So happy you love them! THANK YOU!
love these accidentally put 4 eggs and i used coconut oil and choc. covered raisin instead and they are still amazing I ended up with over 40!! cookies but that was a pleasant surprize
I have never tasted a better oatmeal chocolate chip cookie (and trust me I’ve tasted a lot!), I think it was the coconut oil used in the recipe that gives the awesome flavour. Thanks!!
THANK YOU!
THESE COOKIES MADE RAINBOWS AND CATS COME OUT OF MY OVEN. THEY WERE TRULY MAGICAL! THANKS FOR EVERYTHING! I AM GOING TO MAKE THEM FOR ALL OF THE RABBITS I KEEP IN MY BASEMENT
haha! YESSS!! So happy you love them, thanks!!
Hello from Singapore! thanks for sharing this recipe! I’m gonna try to make them into cookie bars (laziness.. ugh.. ).. may i know if i should still bake them at 350F, and for how long? =p i was thinking maybe 20-30min for 1/2 inch thick cookies bars? =) thanks again!
p.s. it’s awesome that you take the time to reply so many msgs.. *respect!*
HI!! I would say 25-30 minutes will be perfect!! Hope you love them and thank you!! 🙂
they turned out PERFECT! I’m so happy with them.. thank you so much for sharing your mum’s love around. =)
Omg…superb. Such a good standby chocolate chip oatmeal recipe!!! I used Bob’s Red-mill gluten free baking flour and 12 minutes was the perfect baking time.
Thank you! <3
Hi Sasha! So happy you like them!! Thanks!!
Useful information. Fortunate me I found your web site
by accident, and I’m stunned why this accident didn’t happened earlier!
I bookmarked it.
Woah!! Thanks so happy you found my site!! (:
Thank you, I have just been looking for info about this topic for ages and yours is
the greatest I have came upon so far. However, what concerning the conclusion?
Are you sure concerning the supply?
This recipe is so easy and DELICIOUS! Second recipe of yours I’ve made and both are amazing!
Hey Amy!
THANK YOU! I am thrilled you loved the cookies, thank makes me so happy! Hope you are having a great Memorial Day weekend! 🙂
Thats awesome! Thank you so much!! I’m so happy you like it Amy!
Been on a baking binge but my cookies keep coming out flat. I just mixed these up and have 3 testers in the oven now. I love how you just dump everything in the bowl an mix it up. No creaming sugar & butter… no sifting. Perfect.
I wish I knew how to fix the flat! Baking can be a mystery! I’m glad you liked them though, Thank you!!
These are great, they turned out perfect when we made them. Thanks for posting.
Simon
Awesome!! Thanks for making Simon!
So happy you loved them! Thanks!
I tried this recipe and these instantly became my favorite cookies ever! Made them a few times already and my sister-in-law went crazy over them as well and asked for a recipe and she made them as well and her family loves them! Simply the best EVER!
SOO happy you like them!! Thanks So much Sara!!
First off, I am not a good baker or maker of sweet things. However, I had the worst sweet tooth and I didn’t want to go to the store so I looked up recipes according to what ingredients I had in the pantry and your recipe popped up. They were not only the easiest, but tastiest cookie recipe I have ever tried. Thank you so much for sharing your mom’s recipe. This is a keeper for me!
So glad you found this one!! Thank you so much Samantha!
I just found finish baking and it is easy and delicious.
Any idea for a good easy bread?!
Thank you
Lilac
Thank you! I love this bread: https://dev.halfbakedharvest.com/5-ingredient-beer-bread/
Yum! I made them vegan by substituting a flax egg (1 tbsp ground flax seeds + 3 tbsp water, stir and let sit in fridge for 15 mins) for each regular egg. They turned out so good! I split the batter and baked half with chocolate chips and half with raisins. I may eat them all before deciding on a favourite version! Thank you!
Sounds amazing Marisa! So happy they turned out great! Thank you!!
I just found this recipe and made them….Sooooo good!!!! Can’t wait for my fam to come over and try them!! 🙂
Yay! I am so glad you loved these & I hope your family loves them just as much! Thank you Jess!
I make these. Omg! Delicious
Thank you!
Looks yummy!! Can I use quick cooking steel cut oats instead of old fashioned oats?
Hi! I don’t recommend using steel cuts outs. I am not sure what the outcome would be. Let me know if you have questions. Thanks!
Hello! Have you tried doubling this recipe? I’m always nervous to double a baked goods recipe. Thank you!
Double works great! Let me know if you have questions. Hope you love these!
One more thing! If you subbed half of the oil for butter – I assume you would use melted butter?
Yes, use melted butter! 🙂
is it ok if I use quick oats instead of regular oats?
Hey Sara! I like using regular oats, but quick outs are OK if in a pinch. Let me know if you have questions. Hope you love the cookies!
Hey! Love love love these cookies but question: mine never change shape to ‘fall’ like a normal cookie. They always stay in balls. Is this normal? Also, the recipe makes a lot of dough (awesome!) but I get way more than 28 tbsp. cookies! Normal?
Hey Sue! It sounds like you are mailing the cookies too small. I would try doubling the size. I think that should solve the problem. Let me know if you have questions. Thank you! 🙂
Listen, I cannot bake for sh-t. I tried these cookies because I had a whole jar of oatmeal collecting dust (not literally) in my pantry, and they were SO GOOD holy wow. My family gobbled it up in minutes. Crispy on the outside and super soft on the inside. I even used Quaker Oats instant oatmeal for this and somehow it worked? (Don’t ask me how) Granted the dough wasn’t so crumbly and the cookies were flatter, but it’s still the best cookie recipe I’ve ever tried. I’m gonna go make another batch.
Hey Anya! I am THRILLED you loved the cookies so much! They are my favorite too! Thank you! 🙂
Thank you for the recipe! I just tried them (have a dozen cooling and a batch in the oven as I write 🙂 I have two questions:
1. My cookies were made into balls as per your instructions, but they didn’t flatten out as much as your did in the pictures…mine are still somewhat plump. What could that be from?
2. I am in Peru and they don’t have “brown” sugar here. They do have white granulated sugar (which I used) and dark “sugar in the raw” type granulated sugar. In lieu of brown sugar, I used sugar in the raw. Is that an “ok” substitute or is there a better way to make up for a lack of brown sugar?
I apologize for my ignorance on this subject. For the first time in my life I’m trying my hand at baking…and having a blast doing it. I appreciate your time and consideration!
Adam Fowler
http://www.fowlersinperu.com
HI Adam! So sometimes you need to push gently down on the cookies before baking to help flatten them a bit. This just depends on how tight you are rolling the balls. As for the sugar, I think sugar in the raw sounds great. let me know if you have any other questions. So glad you enjoyed the cookies! 🙂
Super good! I didn’t use all the chocolate chips, and they ended up making 40 cookies. Couldn’t stop eating them!!!!!!!!
That is so great to hear! Thank you Kim!
Gotta be one of the best cookies I’ve ever had! Me & the kids couldn’t stop eating them!
Thank you!!!
I am so glad to hear that! Thank you!
Saw this recipe in your book and was happy to try it today! Thanks for sharing your mom’s cookies. The dough is so easy to make and while it took me a little work to mold the dough rounds, the results turned out great! Great texture!
I am really glad these turned out awesome for you, Monica! Thank you!
These cookies are great! I was looking for a economical cookie recipe (butter is so $$$) and found a yummy chewy moist chocolate chip oatmeal cookie that I will make forever. I also love that I can just dump all the ingredients in the KitchenAid, and mix.
I am so glad you found this recipe then! Thank you Lynda!!
I made these and they are super yummy, but mine came out… too crunchy? I kept adding more oil like you say to do if they’re too crumbly. What would be a better idea for me next time?
Hi Lisa! Hoe long did you bake them for? I find under baking is always best. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Thank you!
These were just OK. I was looking for a healthier alternative to the butter laden chocolate chip recipes and had high hopes for this one. I kept having to add oil b/c the dough was so dry. I really had to work at forming each cookie into a ball, and they were still crumbly when cooked, but tasted fine. I may have another go at this, but would add some butter next time to make them less dry. Happy to hear any suggestions besides butter though. Thanks.
Hi Mary, I am really sorry you did not enjoy these cookies. It’s hard to say what could be the problem without being in your kitchen. Do you live in a dry climate? What kind of oil are you using? I find using high quality canola oil to work best with these cookies. Are you using rolled oats? Hope I can help and again, sorry for the trouble!
Hi Tieghan!
I have been trying this recipe numerous times and they are absolutely delicious! But I do have one question: After a day of putting it in my dad’s wine cooler, the cookies had become more hard and thick and not as chewy. I also put only 3/4-1 cup of brown sugar because I thought it was too sweet. Is there any way I can fix the texture or is it just because I’m adding less sugar?
If its possible, could you reply to me as soon as possible because I will be baking these cookies on Saturday (again!)
Thanks!
Hi Emma, Is there a reason why you are storing the cooking in the wine cellar? I am afraid the cool air might be making them hard. Also, the cookies are already reduce suagr, so this might be affecting the texture as well. Please let me know if you have other questions. Thanks! 🙂
These look incredible! Would the cookies turn out if I used coconut oil instead of canola? Just wondering if you’ve tried this.
Thanks!
The cookies work great with melted coconut oil. Please let me know if you have other questions. Hope you love this recipe! Thanks! 🙂
You don’t mention to use a fork to flatten the cookies?
Because my ones did not look like they were going to spread in the oven, they stayed in balls so i had to use a fork to flatten them out a bit.
Hi Nicola! I hope these still turned out amazing for you!
Could you use steel cut oats instead or rolled? I already have a big bag of steel cut, so it would make more sense for me to use that. Would I just need to let the batter sit for longer, so the oats absorb the liquid, or should I bake for longer? Can’t wait to make these! 🙂
I don’t recommend using steel cut oats as they are prettier different texture wise and cook up very differently than rolled oats. Please let me know if you have other questions. Hope you love this recipe! Thanks! 🙂
SO GOOD!!! Love that you have breakfast, lunch/dinner, and dessert recipes that I LOVE! These are so good. I thought they were even better the next day once the cookies have settled a little. This will be my new go-to, easy, delicious cookie recipe. Love a recipe that only uses one bowl! I used half the amount of chocolate chips and used dark chocolate 🙂 I froze half of them, so hopefully they will thaw well! I can’t wait to share these with loved ones. Thank you!!
I am so glad you love these cookies! Thank you so much!
Saw these and made them immediately! Love a good one bowl recipe. I think the next time around I’ll roll them better bc a couple of them came apart in the oven, but great otherwise!! Thanks!
Thank you Avani!
seems to be my new favorite cookies…yummy! Thanks for sharing this one! my kids love it so much….
I am so happy to hear that! Thank you Judy!
This is the first time that i bake an oatmeal cookies and these one is great. My brother loves this recipe.
Thank you so much! I am so glad your brother loved this!
Hi! I made these cookies and was expecting them to turn out like the photo in the book (flatter) but they came out more like the pictures on website – actually they wouldn’t flatten and were still round. I followed recipe exactly. Any suggestions? Thank you!
Thanks very much for this recipe. Can l mix ingredients and refrigerate to use later?
HI! Yes, you can do that, but I would bake within 2-3 days of making the dough. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe. Thanks so much! x Tieghan
Thanks for this amazing recipe. Can l mix the ingredients and refrigerate it for use later?
I bake the cookies from the recipe with very good results. The chocolate chips a bit too much l will adjust it next time. The cookies taste delicious. Thanks
Thank you! I am so glad you loved these Marie!
For me, they needed more salt and butter instead of oil. I could taste the oil, and they just didn’t go Pow like a great cookie should. Liked the one bowl/no chilling part.
Hi Tina! I am so sorry you did not enjoy these cookies. I hope you love some other recipes on my blog!
Can I use vegetable oil?
I don’t recommend that. I would use melted coconut oil or melted butter if you cannot use canola oil. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe. Thanks so much! xTieghan
OMG .. Delicious! I just made these and they are fantastic! I love that I didn’t need butter (as I ALWAYS forget to leave it out to soften). This recipe was so easy to make and took hardly no time at all… I shall be making these more often as my go to recipe. I did use Avocado oil (as I didn’t have Canola oil) and they are fantastic! Thanks for sharing 🙂
I am so glad you loved these Marlene! Thank you so much!
Any chance I can sub GF almond flour in these? These look amazing!
HI! I have not tested these with GF so I can’t say for sure, but I would think it might work. If you do give it a try please let me know how it goes! Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe. Thanks so much! xTieghan
I never comment on food websites but these really are the best cookies I’ve ever made and had. Simply delicious. Thank you for sharing
Thank you Erika!
These cookies are awesome…my whole family loves them. I make them with coconut oil and the slight coconut taste is wonderful, texture great. We have even made gluten free with Bob’s Red Mill gluten free flour mix and xanthum gum! Try it. I love putting them in refrigerator and have the chocolate harden a bit. We freeze them too and put in lunches. Will try bars next! Killer!!
Thank you,Tieghan.
PS I noticed that most of your early posts are people who like the recipe and later posts are people who actually tried the recipe…I wonder if you have considered switching what comes first, because I want to read about people who have made the recipe before I try it, if possible! Just a thought.
Hi Liz! I am so glad you all loved these cookies! Thank you so much!
Amazing! I substituted coconut oil for canola oil and added a half cup of melted peanut butter 🙂
Love that! I am so glad you enjoyed these Emily! Thank you! xTieghan
Hey Tieghan! Made these yesterday right from the HBH book but the bake time listed there was 15-20mins. Found it a bit strange but didn’t question it. Little disappointed after the hard work but now see that it’s 10-12mins. Just thought you should know, the flavour was amazing though!
Hi Cass! Thank you so much for letting me know and I apologize for that! I am so glad you still enjoyed these cookies! xTieghan
These were good, but I wish they were a bit softer and flattened in the oven. I used coconut oil instead of canola bc that’s all I had avail, so I wonder if that affected it. I don’t like it when cookies remain balls after the designated baking time….or perhaps my cookie balls were too big. I dunno, but it def needs some tweaking on my part before I try these again. It’s a really nice use of oatmeal. =)
Thank you so much! xTieghan
I just made these they are good but they didnt completely flatten out but they are delicious oh well, how did you get yours to flatten out?
HI Lisa! Did you adjust anything about the recipe? If your cookies are not flattening, try gently pressing down in the cookie balls before baking. this should help them to flatten. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you! xTieghan
I love these cookies!! So yummy! I was wondering if it’s okay if i substitute butter for canola oil? Do you think they would come out just as good? Thanks!
HI! I actually much prefer oil, but yes melted butter will work too! Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you! xTieghan
These have just become our favourite cookie. I’ve already made them 3 times over the span of 2 weeks.
Delicious!!!
Wow that is so amazing! So glad you have been loving these cookies, Karen! Thank you! xTieghan
The recipe says canola oil, but several comments say they loved the coconut oil. Which oil is it?
Hi Olivia, you can use canola oil or melted coconut oil, it is your choice. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you! xTieghan
I halved the recipe because I didn’t ‘need’ so many cookies – and now I’m regretting it! The absolute BEST cookies!! All your recipes I’ve tried have turned out amazing (and I tell everyone about you!) but this recipe might just be my favourite. I’m sure it’s going to be a household classic 😉 Thank you!
I was looking for an oatmeal cookie recipe and found this; coincidentally I’m trying to reduce butter consumption, and when I saw your recipe called for oil instead, and had great reviews, it blew my mind.
I made these tonight, using light olive oil, and wow – best oatmeal cookies I’ve ever had! My husband isn’t a fan of oatmeal cookies, but was curious to try one. He then walked away with a plate of 6 and snarfed them down – haha! He wants me to make these again so that’s really something.
Thanks for sharing your Mom’s wonderful recipe, this has just been added to my special cookie recipe collection and will be made for years to come. Cheers!
Wow that is so amazing to hear that you both loved these cookies, Cynna! Thank you so much!! xTieghan
I made the cookies tonight, I thought they were fine, except that the texture was all oats and chips. There wasn’t any dough texture. Not a bad cookie just not what I was looking for.
Hi Susan! I am really sorry about that! Are there any questions I could help you with? xTieghan
I made these as mostly butterscotch oatmeal cookies, and then about 1/3 of them as chocolate chip butterscotch chip. They are SO GOOD! I did have to add at least 3min to the time to get them to cook through, but either way.. LOVE!
YES! So glad you loved this recipe, Lyndsey! Thank you so much! xTieghan
So delicious and super easy!
Thank you so much Meg! xTieghan
Loved these. Made them with raisins instead of chocolate chips one time and the next time with chocolate chips. Delicious either way and a bit different that the standard oatmeal cookie, which I loved. All eaten up immediately in our house. Thank your mama, Tieghan!
Thank you so much Sandi! I am so glad you loved this!! xTieghan
I’ve been making double batches of these at least 10 times a year for the past few years and bring them to every occasion and they are always a hit. I use half canola and half coconut oils. I also form them into logs and freeze them before using. I pull the logs out the day before and slice about 3/4 in thick slices and let them thaw slightly. Then I bake convection at 320 for about 12 minutes and they are perfect every time. Just got done making 4 logs this morning!
That is so great! Thank you for trying this, Mike! I am so glad you have been loving it over the years! Happy Holidays! xTieghan
These are INCREDIBLE! I have been making them 2-3 times a month. Sooo good! The recipe is super easy and they turn out just like the photos! Thank you for sharing. I love all your recipes but these cookies I keep coming back to!
YES!! I love to hear that these have been going so well for you! Thank you for trying them, Emily!! xTieghan
Is the brown sugar packed?
Hi Diana! I always do a loose packed brown sugar. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you!! xTieghan
I have made these several times and they are GOOD. I like that it doesn’t include butter because the butter get really crumbly and hard to combine and I don’t have a KitchenAid.
Thank you Jamie! I am so glad you have been loving these! xTieghan
I just made these tonight. I halved the recipe and added a dash of cinnamon to the dough. I also used less than a cup of chocolate chips (I used a mix of milk chocolate and semisweet). I measured the dough with a tbs and ended up with over 20 cookies… not that I’m complaining tho lol! These taste awesome (next time I’d leave out the cinnamon I added on impulse). These will be a go-to oatmeal cookie base for me! Thanks for the recipe.
I am so glad thee turned out so well for you Lillian! Thank you so much for trying it! xTieghan
Hi, can you make these into bars rather than cookies?
Hi Allison! Yes, that should work! I hope you love these! xTieghan
I hate to be critical of a family recipe but we really disliked these cookies. 🙁 I’ve been using A LOT of butter in cooking and baking while we’ve been home these past few weeks, so when I saw a recipe that didn’t use butter – and with such great pictures and reviews – I thought I’d give it a try. I followed the recipe exactly, and first of all, the dough was super-oily yet crumbly at the same time so it was kind of frustrating forming the cookies, pre-bake. Then they came out looking nothing like your pictures – they spread out and flattened. And most importantly, all we could taste was OIL. I guess I never realized just how much of their flavor cookies get from butter. We couldn’t get past the oil flavor. That was only one pan, so I stirred some cinnamon into the rest of the dough and put it in the fridge for a couple days because I really hate to waste food. Today I made another couple pans, and straight from the fridge after a couple of days the dough was easier to work with and the cookies held their shape better. I also sprinkled the tops with cinnamon sugar which helped mask the oil flavor, but I don’t think I’ll make this recipe again. It would probably have been better with coconut oil (wish I would have thought of that before I started) and I’m sure it’s a good option people who can’t eat butter, but since we can and do eat butter, I’m going to stick to my traditional oatmeal cookie recipe. Sorry, and thanks for this amazing site. This is the only recipe (of MANY) that I’ve gotten here that we haven’t cared for.
Hi Bethany! I am sorry to hear that this did not turn out well for you! Please let me know if there is anything I can help you with or any recommendations on other cookie recipes! I hope you have a wonderful Sunday and are staying safe! xTieghan
Hi there! Do you think I can substitute the canola oil for coconut oil by chance?
Hi Ana! Yes that should work great! I hope you love these cookies! xTieghan
Definitely the best oatmeal cookies I’ve ever made. After reading all the reviews about how hard the dough is to work with, I followed another’s suggestion to just drop the dough from a spoon and that worked perfectly!!! I made a half batch and I’m so glad I did bc I’d eat them all. Oink.
So glad this turned out so well for you, Caroline! Thank you for trying it! xTieghan
These were a hit with my family. Turned out great. I had to tweak the recipe a bit for dietary purposes. Used 1C grape seed oil and less of the sugars. Also used A mixture of dark chocolate and semi sweet. Lastly, used convection baking setting for less than 10 minutes. Will make again! Thank you.
Thank you so much Jessie! I am so glad this recipe turned out so well for you all! xTieghan
So so tasty and easy! Added walnuts as well and loved the way they turned out.
Thank you so much Vanessa! xTieghan
Could you sub coconut oil for the canola oil?
These look so delicious!
Hi Holly,
Yes coconut oil will work. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
Umm, AMAZING. I have a pastry degree and these might be the best thing I’ve ever made. Super easy to make. I made them into bars like your other recipe, vacuum sealed, and froze the leftovers. When someone needs a cookie, I reheat one and have a fresh cookie bar in just a few minutes!
Thank you so much Johanna!! That is so great to hear! xTieghan
I’ve made this before and it’s one of my favorite cookies. But during this pandemic I could not find vanilla extract. It’s as scarce as toilet paper. So had to use what I had. Half rum and half maple extract And wow was really great!
Well I am glad these still turned out amazing for you, Karen! Thank you for trying! xTieghan
Yum yum! These cookies are delicious and exactly what I was looking for! Your instructions were also very detailed and helpful so that I knew it was okay for the dough to be a little crumbly. Thanks for sharing this tasty treat!
Thank you for trying this Kelly! I am really glad it turned out so well for you!! xTieghan
I wanted to let you know that I have been using this recipe for 4 or 5 years now. I have a batch in the oven as I type this. This was the recipe I needed when my son was allergic to dairy but they really are the best so we continue to make them even though he’s outgrown his allergy. I also make them in a 9×13 because I’m too lazy to scoop out individual cookies! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you Leia! I am really glad you have been loving these cookies! xTieghan
I’m frequent flyer on your website and know that most of your cookie dough requires refrigeration. I just want to double check if this needs refrigeration also or not? Thanks so much!! I absolutely love using your recipes— especially your cookies!!!!
Hey Bethany,
You do not need to refrigerate this dough. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
These are SO good. I was skeptical that there was no butter but they are amazing. I tried them today with half butter and half oil and I think the flavor is a little better but they don’t hold their shape as nicely as the all oil recipe. Both are delicious!!
Thank you so much Michelle! I am really glad this recipe turned out so well for you! xTieghan
So delicious and so easy! I used coconut oil instead of canola oil and I also substituted 1 cup of the chocolate chips with 1 cup of chopped apples. I think for the next batch I may add a little bit of cinnamon for a real fall cookie!
Thank you so much Michelle! I am so glad you enjoyed this recipe! xTieghan
Please thank your Mother for sharing her recipe! I have learned so much from her through you! The most important thing I learned is to keep at least three bags of chocolate chips in my pantry at all times. I was also pretty stoked to realize I had all the other ingredients in my pantry.
I loved how easy these were, my confidence in my baking abilities soared.
These turned out great….they have definitely earned their place in this years cookie box.
Thank you Tieghan
Thank you so much Cindy! I am really glad this recipe turned out so well for you! xTieghan
My dough was NOT crumbly. I added another cup of oats and it was still wet.
Hi James! I am sorry about that! I will look into this again! xTieghan
Hi!
Just made these. They don’t flatten well though unless I take a fork to them afterwards. Do you flatten your dough first?! Can’t wait to try them!!
Hey Tobi,
Next time try removing the pan from the oven and “slamming” the pan on the counter while baking. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
In the end, these cookies tasted good, but I didn’t find them amazing. I’d never made a cookie recipe that only had oil (in lieu of butter or crisco) and they turned out extremely oily. They were so oily they would not hold together as balls. So much so, I’m fact, that after the first batch of cookies I added some extra oatmeal and pressed the remaining dough into a 9×9 baker and made them into bars. I would not make again.
Hi Shelly! I am really sorry these did not turn out as expected for you. I have not had this problem of them being really oily.. Is there anything that could have changed while making this? xTieghan
Hi Teagan. I have your cookbook and I just love everything that you post. I did make these cookies the first time and they did not spread out. I followed the recipe and they baked flat. Mind you they are the best tasting cookies ever. What did I do wrong?
Hey Vicki,
Thanks so much for giving the recipe a try, I am slightly confused because you said they did not spread out but they are flat. Please let me know how I can help! xTieghan
Can I add pecans? Instead of chocolate chips? Cannot wait to try this recipe! Also would it be possible to make them as a bar?
Made these cookies a few years back and I couldn’t stop making them! They are extremely addictive!! Vowed to not make them for awhile. Hubby not so thrilled. Lol. Well, today is his lucky day! Please tell your mom THANK U for gifting us all with her delicious cookie recipe!
Thank you so much Jackie! I am really glad this recipe turned out so well for you! xTieghan
Can the flour be replaced with gluten free flour?
Hey Protima,
Yes, and equal amount of GF flour will work well here. I hope you love the recipe. If you have any other questions, please let me know! Happy New Year! xTieghan
Omg another great recipe from you. You were right they were fantastic right out of the oven. Thank you for all your hard work providing everyone with your fantastic ideas!
Hey Kathi,
I am so glad this recipe was enjoyed, thanks so much for giving it a try! Have the best week. xTieghan
these cookies are so good! they’re soft, chewy, and slightly crispy on the edges! i reduced the sugar a bit and they were still pretty sweet, so if you like less sweet cookies i would recommend cutting the sugar down a bit.
Hey Catie,
Thanks so much for making the recipe, I am delighted it was enjoyed! Have a great weekend:) xTieghan
These cookies are delicious! Thank you for sharing your mom’s recipe. Sorry if this was asked before but have you ever added nuts?
Hey there,
I am so glad you enjoyed this recipe. Thanks a lot for giving it a try and happy Sunday! You could certainly add nuts to these! xTieghan
Made exactly as written. Used cookie scoop to scoop dough, really easy. I might sub 1/4 butter next time for better flavor.
Hey Jessica,
Thanks for giving the recipe a try! xTieghan
I’m wondering if they would be good if you substituted crisco for the oil?
Also, thanks for posting a crock pot section of recipes, Tieghan. I’m always looking for them.
Hi there! I have not tested that, but I do image it could work! Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you! xTieghan
Could you substitute applesauce for the oil?
Hey there,
I haven’t tested with apple sauce, but you could certainly give it a try! I hope you love the recipe! Let me know how they turn out. Thanks! xTieghan
I made this recipe today and it totally slays! I did a big cookie delivery after making them and everyone I gave them to were fans. I will definitely make these again. Possibly with raisins next time. The only thing I would change it the amount chocolate chips. I would only add one cup instead of two. Heresy, I know. I had a hard time making the dough balls. They were like 70% chocolate! 😀
Anyway, they taste great and I can tell my friends that this is an old family recipe (just not my family’s! haha). Thanks for sharing this awesome recipe!
Hey Andy,
Thanks so much for giving the recipe a try, I am thrilled that it was enjoyed! Happy Valentine’s Day❤️ xTieghan
Hi Tiegan! If I don’t have canola oil, would coconut oil work the same?
Hey Amy,
Yes, coconut oil would work well for you. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know how they turn out! xTieghan
These are an absolute nightmare! I was super excited to try these, my 3rd recipe from the books. First, I had a puddle of oil in the bottom of my bowl. My hands were drenched in oil. So oily I have to toss out a bunch of chocolate chips because they wouldn’t even stick to the dough. Can’t even comprehend how it could state people might need to add even more. Then, baked my first batch for 15 minutes at the minimum time the book suggests. Only to find the website says 10-12. First batch was totally burnt! This has been a total waste of ingredients, really disappointed.
Hey Jessica,
So sorry you had issues with this recipe, was there anything you may have adjusted? Let me know how I can help! xTieghan
