My Favorite Slow Roasted Pork Carnitas.
Guys, we have serious, serious things to chat about today.
Number one is obviously these carnitas. These extra special, super delicious slow roasted pork carnitas.
And two? Well two is about what’s been on my mind recently. Let’s start with two, and then we’ll move on to the carnitas. Promise, I will try not to write a novel…
So lately I’ve been I wanting to do more with the blog. I need a little more of a challenge, something new, something different, and I feel like the blog needs a little update. I’d like you to let me know what you’d like to see more of on HBH. Is it super easy recipes? More quick how-to videos? Longer videos… where I talk and talk and talk? Do you like hearing all about my life and what’s happening behind the scenes? Or would you prefer for me to simply stick to content? How about some lifestyle posts? Would you be into fashion inspired posts? If so, what areas? I really want to know what you’d love to see me share? I want to go there, to add something new and fun and fresh and different! So please… give me your thoughts, ideas, comments… I want to hear them all!
PS. the fashion thing?? Anyone? You know my whole life I thought I was going to work in the fashion industry, but then my move to LA happened and I kind of freaked, and then this blog happened. Now I only buy dishes and surfaces, and only wear Lululemon tights and sweatshirts smeared with chocolate all day long…I wouldn’t mind bringing a little fashion back into my world. Would you guys be into it? My favorite trends? My wish list? Maybe some go-to working girl outfits? Maybe only as a monthly thing, or maybe more? Thoughts?!?!
PSS. What about entertaining posts!?! I’m really into these. Like dinner parties, summer get-togethers, cocktails… Would you be interested in seeing more of these types of posts?
OKok, and now let’s chat carnitas!!!
The pork gets slow cooked for two to three hours and when it’s finished, it literally just falls apart. The shredded meat makes for the most epic round of tacos, complete with all the toppings. The meat just melts in your mouth and the flavor is insane.
Like nothing better.
Also, while this meat is great for tacos, it’s also great for burrito bowls, nachos, pizza, quesadillas, sandwiches, ext…the options here are endless. With this carnita recipe, you really can do no wrong! 🙂
The one must? A side of guacamole and chips.

My Favorite Slow Roasted Pork Carnitas.
By halfbakedharvest
Course: Main Course
Cuisine: Mexican
Keyword: carnitas, pork, pork carnitas, slow roast
These are extra special, super delicious slow roasted pork carnitas.
Ingredients
- 3 pounds pork shoulder cut into 3 inch cubes
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- 2 teaspoons chipotle chili powder
- kosher salt and pepper
- 1 cup Mexican beer or low sodium chicken broth
- 1/2 cup orange juice
- 2 leaves bay
- juice from 2 limes
- cilantro for serving
Instructions
Classic Slow Roasted On the Stove
-
Toss the cubed pork with the garlic powder and chipotle chili powder. Season liberally with salt and pepper.
-
Heat a large dutch oven over medium high heat. Sear the pork on all sides. If needed, sear the pork in batches if your dutch oven is not large enough. Reduce the heat low and pour in the beer, orange juice and 1/2 cup water (there should be just enough liquid to cover the sides of the meat). Add the bay leaves. Bring the mixture to a boil and then reduce the heat, cover and simmer for 1 1/2 hours on LOW. After 1 1/2 hours the pork should be falling apart. Remove the lid and continue cooking another 30 minutes. The Coca-Cola will caramelize and the liquid will evaporate almost completely.
-
Transfer the pork to a cutting board and shred. Drizzle the carnitas with lime juice. Serve with warm tortillas, avocado and cheese. EAT!
Crockpot

I mean, obviously. ???
Hi tieghan!
I just wanted to let you know that I’m absolutely in love with ur blog !! Every morning at 10-11 am (Belgium hours) I get excited cause a new post pops up on half baked harvest. Hehe, I may sound like a freak, but I’m just such a fan.
Next, I would love to get to know more of ur life. Since I’m foodblogging myself (just starting), I’d really like to see how you come up with stuff, how you inspire yourself, how your days are planned and stuff.
Fashion and entertainment posts are definitely awesome as well !!
Don’t get insecure ?
Thats so amazing!! ?
I think I will try and include a lot more the behind the scene type stuff in future posts.
So glad to hear you’re open to fashion and entertainment posts as well (:
Thanks so much for your comment Eva!
Hi, I am a loooong-time reader of your blog, but have rarely commented *sorry*. Thus your post made me feel a little guilty. I love that you share so much of yourself and I have huge respect for what you have achieved with your blog. I hope you continue to share your life with us and post stories.
I would love to know (in either writing or even video) what inspires you and how you come up with ideas. It would also be great (not sure if it’s technically possible) to get a video of how you do a photoshoot. Maybe you do a lot of this on snapchat but I really don’t want to get another social media black hole 😉 Maybe upload them on your instagram account, too?
As for recipes I could always use some ideas for great, easy meals to take to work and that are tasty and perfect if you can only heat them up in a microwave. Not sure if it could work in practice but reader’s could submit like an “ingredients list” you cook something nice with it. Or do a meal of things that are right this moment in your fridge, so a spontaneous cooking session.
Anyway, whatever you decide on. I am extremely happy with your blog as it is but whatever you come up with I am sure I will love it as well.
Hi Kat!! I didn’t mean to make you feel guilty!!! I just hoped to hear from long time readers and get their opinions ? TOTALLY worked, and I’m so happy about it!!
I think it could be fun to write about some of my inspirations, I will try to include that in future post, great suggestion!!
I might possibly have to get my brother out here to do a video of the shooting process I go through?!
That’s a really cool idea!! Simpler recipes are already in the works and a submission type post could be really engaging and fun for me as well!!
Thank you so much for taking the time to read and comment!!?
Love, love, love your blog. I am NEVER one to comment but you asked for it! Would like some entertaining ideas because that is one of the main reasons we cook. Good food, good friends, family gatherings or just a romantic dinner for two. Keep up the good work!
Hi Brenda!! I know!! I wanted to hear from you!!! I am totally going to do more entertainment stuff so be on the lookout!!
Thank you!!!
Hi Tieghan,
Thanks for all the effort you put into your blog posts. Your recipes are intriguing and your photos are always top notch.
In addition to the types of recipes you already write, I would love to see some quick recipes with easy to find ingredients. I live in Germany and some specialty ingredients you like to feature like edible flowers and honeycomb are not easy to find here. As much as I’d love to try making those recipes, I just can’t find those ingredients.
Keep up the good work and stay true to yourself!
Hi Meredith!! This is perfect!! I think I do need more simpler post so I will absolutely be looking to do this in the near future!!
Thank you so much for the kind words?
Hey Tieghan!
I am not a long time reader, I’ve just started getting your emails this week after I listened to your podcast interview on FBP and I already can’t believe how MUCH you post…it’s amazing! I’ve totally stalked your blog this week and I am obsessed with your photos…I can honestly say I’ve never felt more inspired, so THANK YOU!! Even though I am still figuring out this whole food blogger thing and I obviously love recipe posts, I really enjoy reading lifestyle posts, especially from people who love on the other side of the world from me! And yes, entertaining, fashion, whatever you want to post about I am sure it will be fab, and if you are posting about something you are super passionate about we will all love it! Love your work, can’t wait to see what comes next!
Laura from New Zealand 🙂
PS I love your barn, I 100% would love to renovate and live in one too #lifegoals
Hi Laura!! So awesome!! Thank you so much!! I am so happy you found my blog??
It’s so nice to hear that you trust me with whatever I want to post about!! But when I do I’d also love to hear your feedback!!?
All the way over in NZ!? I’m so jealous! Looks amazingly pretty from what I have seen!!! Maybe we can trade for a bit? Ha ha. My brothers Red and Brendan loved it over there as well.
Thanks so much Laura!
Hey Tieghan,
I am following you blog for a while now. I usually don’t comment however. I keep in the quiet. However, I am always excited to check my phone around 11 am (I live in Berlin, Germany) to see what new recipe you just posted. I really like your ideas. So do my friends and family when I try the recipes with them or translate them. Thank you for so many interesting and most of time easy ideas that taste great.
I am not so much into fashion blogs, but I guess a post on fashion from you once in a while doesn’t hurt. 😉 Especially since you seem to love fashion. I would like to read more on the development of your recipes. Do you get them while you eat in restaurants? Do you get them whilst scrolling through Instagram/Pinterest etc.? Also, I am interested in what kind of crockery you use for your pictures. I noticed “Staub” a few times. Another thing I would be happy to read about is entertainment posts. Like you suggested. How would you assemble some of your older/recent posts for special occasions? The kind of posts you have written multiple times already. I quite like seeing dishes put together, cos I find it hard myself to select “fitting” dishes for occasions.
Again, thank you for soooo many wonderful recipes. I have tried food because of you which I used to dislike and now enjoy once in a while (spinach!!) or have never tried before (Almond milk – I came to looove it!)
Keep up the great work! 🙂
Kerstin
Hey Kerstin!
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment, it means SOOO much!! I love all your suggestions and will try to do my best to bring them into my content in the next few months!! Again, thank you so much, your words and thoughts mean so much! 🙂 Have a great Friday!!
Dear Tieghan,
First: I think you are doing an amazing job and are incredibely talented, creative and hard-working. I can’t imagine how you manage to post new recipes with beautiful photography 6x a week while writing a cookbook as well. So, as far as I am concerned, you do not have to change anything – I enjoy your recipes (and have cooked many) and love the little stories from your world.
But someone once said that people ultimitely read for the ‘voice’, or the personality behind the words. Which means I am sure I will enjoy anything you choose to write about (entertaining sounds fun and I have enjoyed your themed posts in the past (Christmas or picnic on a hike…) and will continue to follow.
I understand about insecuritites and (as my husband often reminds me) tend always to see what I have not done yet, instead of being happy about all that I have accomplished ( I published my first gardening book last year :-)). So I know it helps to hear it from somebody else: Tieghan, you’re doing great!
Love from the Netherlands,
Vera
Hi Vera!!
Thank you so much!!
It’s hard once you get used to what your doing!! I feel like it’s not enough anymore!! I’m excited to hear that you will continue to follow with whatever I decide to do!! It really does help to hear that!! Wow, and all the way from the Netherlands! AMAZING!!
Hi Tieghan!
I’ve been following your blog for probably almost 2-3 years now, and you’re still my go-to food blog (over a lot of others!!) every time I sit down to eat a meal because I just like to look at your beautiful, appetizing pictures since it seems to make my food taste better! (Dorm food, ugh) But really, I’ve never come across a food blog so passionate or wildly creative. The other blogs I follow hardly post and this is kind of disappointing since I like waking up to a new recipe everyday. The fact that you’re practically my age makes me feel insecure about what I’ve been doing with my life since you’ve already accomplished so much at such a young age! You’ve chosen to work on your passions and it shows- you have the best food pictures out there I’m not even kidding. These could be in a magazine! And the fact that you photograph like a pro without having studied photography? In. Sane. And don’t get me started on how you come up with such amazing dishes- so classy and gourmet but soul food-y at the same time. Girl you are a force to be reckoned with, please don’t feel insecure!! Keep doing what you love and do best and I swear good things will follow. Your talents are awe inspiring. Love from the Philippines- yes you have reached us too!! (I recommend you to all my fellow foodie friends) xxx
I realize I didn’t comment on the new content ideas: Literally anything and everything you want to do. Lay it all here! I’d love to see all the things you mentioned, though I have to say I wish you had a YouTube channel sometimes so we can see you in action! That said, it would be nice to see you and hear your voice. Also, love hearing about your life. Xxx
WOW Andrea, this is so incredibly nice, and honestly so lifting!! ??
I seriously would not worry about anything!! I know you will find exactly what you want to do!!
Hearing this made me so so happy! And the fact that I have you following from the Philippines is SO so cool!!
I’m excited to try some of your suggestions!! So please let me know what you think because your input is very important to me?
Thank you Andrea
Tieghan, I don’t think you have anything to worry about with your blog, I almost want to say don’t change a thing cause it’s perfect what you’re doing. Just because maybe here & there you don’t get alot of comments , it does not mean that you don’t have alot of followers. Cause seriously… you do. look above & below my comment! …. and these are people from all over the world!, that’s saying something!!!
I love your combination of flavors, and all your food ideas, it’s so creative & different & really stands out from alot of other websites/ bloggers, that’s why this is the “one” website I keep coming back to. It’s like, i don’t want to try one or two of your recipes…. I want to make all of them. And of course you tie up the whole package with beautiful photography.
So, yeah… I’m gonna say it … don’t change a thing cause what your doing is perfect.
And we’re all waiting for your book!
All the best,
Karen.
It means so much to hear comments like this Karen!!
Hearing comments like yours is what motivates me!!
Don’t change a thing!!! So awesome! Literally the best compliment!
Thank you Karen?
Oh my, I don’t know what to say… I like your blog the way it is, I love the food – most of it! – that you post here and that has inspired me into trying stuf, or adapting stuff, or just plain cooking stuff differently – that cashew chicken, for instance, I did my own version and am I glad I devoured that post of yours! So, truly I come here for the food, you know… I’m very much into fashion – used to have a fashion blog! – but I am more into styyle as I have such a well set and defined personal style I really don’t care about trends. I don’t entertain anymore, so I would be at a loss with those posts, but some might be quite interesting, actually. I don’t always leave a comment as somedays I’m really pressed for time (my own blog, and trying to write two novels on top of homemaking and a small boy that needs seeing to) but I try to comment most days. Like these carnitas, I mean, they make me want to board the first flight there and eaaaaaaat. Non stop eating, you know?
http://bloglairdutemps.blogspot.pt/
Hi Miranda!! Thank you so much for the nice words!!
Food will always be the backbone of this blog!! But I think the fashion and behind the scenes stuff could be fun too!
I love when I see your comments!! Especially knowing that you made time to leave them with all that you have on your plate!! Thats amazing!!
Thank you so so much!
Your blog was the first blog I started reading, when I found out food blogs were a thing, and the one I go to everyday at 9am just to read what you’ve come up with (still wonder how you do it).
What I love about this blog is the dedication that you put into it, and the love for what you do and that’s what I think makes HBH special for me.
So I think if you’d like to talk about fashion you should, and I’m all for the entertainment kind of posts and some behind the scenes. The recipes are just perfect as they are 🙂
Oh and so excited for your book can’t wait!!
Wow!! So awesome thank you!!
I love that you appreciate all that I put into the blog!! So cool!!
I cant wait for the book to be done and to share with you all.I am looking into the best ways to incorporate fashion and a few other ideas into the blog to keep it fresh, but I love that YOU love the recipes!
Thanks so much Beatriz (:
Looks so good. I gonna try that one this weekend for sure. Can’t wait to taste it 🙂
I hope you love it!! Please let me know!!
Another huge fan of your blog right here! Every morning, around 11 in the UK, I check in for a new recipe. I love that you’re so consistent in posting everyday – a real inspiration for other food bloggers.
Would love more lifestyle posts especially about where you live – it sounds beautiful. And your food is perfect, keep it coming! Ooh, you could do a post about how you started blogging plus tips for other bloggers out there? Even some behind-the-scenes as to how you shoot those amazing photos? Have a lovely day! 🙂
Hi!!! Thank you!!! This means so much to me!!
I think lifestyle type stuff is something I am very interested in doing in the near future!!
A post about how I started is a GREAT idea that I think I will try to do!
Behind the scenes is something I would really like to incorporate in as wee!! So be on the lookout!!
Thank you!! Have an amazing day!!
Hey T,
I totally get self-doubt issues (I like wrote the book) but you should know that you have no reason to! I have been following your blog since I first started discovering the world of food blogging and it’s been at the top of my go-to list for inspiration. I’m not kidding girl, you don’t know how many people you inspire every single day.
Also, the possibility of you getting into some fashion stuff has me super excited! Do IT! Don’t hold back just because you feel insecure because we all love your work and it only keeps getting better!!!
Hi Tori!! I love seeing your comments all the time BTW!
Thank you so much!! It means a lot to hear this!
Ah the fashion! So nervous about it, but I think I’m ready to try it out!! So be on the lookout!!
Thanks!!!!!
Carnitas are my love language and these look amazing!
I would love to see entertaining/dinner party posts–those are always really inspiring to me. Also, it was super fun hearing you on the FBP podcast, and I’d love to see posts about your food photography & styling or maybe behind-the-scenes videos related to that :).
I agree! A behind the scenes of your photoshoots could be very awesome!
Thanks Holly! I think I am going to try and do some of the behind the scenes of myself shooting!! Thank you!
HI!! Thank you! I’m so happy you like the Carnitas!!
I am going to try and do more entertainment stuff!! And most definitely behind the scenes stuff!!
I’ve had a few comments about the podcast and I’m glad you liked it!!
Thanks Becky!!
I love your blog! This isn’t a side project for you it’s your life. You are absolutely the number one site I go to due to the frequency and quality in which you post. I honestly would love to see more behind the scenes content as well, it’s fun. Lifestyle and fashion is great. I’d like to see some pictures on your Instagram of your daily adventures too, I.e goat/Asher shenanigans!
Hey Cassandra!! First of all thank you so much!!
I am totally going to do behind the scenes stuff!
The Instagram is interesting!! I always wonder if people like it when I post personal stuff and not just food! So thank you for that input!!
Honestly, I pick your blog over others because I know I’m going to get a new recipe almost everyday and it’s ALWAYS SOOOOOO GOOOOD! I almost only cook what you cook. 🙂 I love reading about your life embedded in the recipes. Saturdays are kinda sad because I don’t start my day off reading your blog. Don’t give up! My cooking would be so boring without your recipes and I CANNOT wait for your book!!
Hi Katie!
HAHA! I love that you read every day and make most of my stuff! So AWESOME!!
Thank you so much for your support!
Hello Tieghan,
I am a native Los Angeleno. I was born and raised in Los Angeles until eventually, my father moved us up to the Central Coast where I lived for many, many years until my husband was transferred to Denver via his employer. So, here I am living in Colorado just like you!
For many years now I have spent whatever spare time I have scouring blogs i.e., food blogs, fashion blogs, entertainment blogs…and as you know, that’s A LOT of blogs!
Anyhow, I am a HUGE fan of your blog yet I too am someone who is guilty of looking at all of your STUNNING photography and reading your observations, stories, and opinions…without so much as contributing a single comment. GUILTY. I rarely subscribe to any blog however I just couldn’t resist subscribing to HBH and my curiosity continues to be piqued when I see HBH in my inbox!
Too often, those of us who do not blog forget how much work is required in order to be a SUCCESSFUL blogger! So…Tieghan, I would like to tell you that for someone so very young, you are leaps and bounds ahead of MOST bloggers out there today.
Consequently, just continue on making beautiful food, taking spectacular photography, and telling us (your fans!) amusing and good humoured stories!
Focus on your successes, all you have accomplished at such a young age, and reward and encourage yourself for your triumphs!
Whatever you decide to do or not do ie., fashion, entertainment, or both, I will remain your fan and I will always pass along the wondrous, marvelous blog that is HBH!
Thank you for all your effort and hard work so that I am able to enjoy HBH.
Here is to you and all that the future holds!
Wow Lauren this is seriously so nice???
Reading that continuing to do what I am already doing is so nice to hear (:
I love knowing that I have your support! Thank you so so much Lauren!
Tieghan I LOVE your blog. I haven’t been following long because I recently discovered you. Please don’t change a thing. I’ve made numerous recipes that you so lovingly presented and I adored them all. Of all the blogs I religiously follow, yours is the one I look forward to the most for many reasons – delicious recipes, gorgeous pictures of food and scenery and finding out more about your very talented life. Silence doesn’t mean no one is reading – they are all probably running to the kitchen to try and recreate your masterpieces. I prefer to comment after I’ve actually tried the recipe.
Hi Rose!! Thank you so much!! Wow! I’m so happy you like the blog!
I am definitely going to try to keep as true to my content as i can but maybe have some fun with smaller new stuff! Thanks so much!
Dude, I’m sorry you feel like that. Your content is, I swear to you, the best in the blogosphere. I’ve made so many of your recipes. My Pinterest pages are basically an ode to you.
But it always helps to ask for feedback, so here’s mine: slooooow down. You’re pushing out content at an insane rate, and you could definitely ease up. You must be working yourself into the ground.
It would be nice to know which recipes you eat most often from what you make. I like ‘Day in the Life’ style posts too. And the shots from your barn makeover were really cool – what about some interiors-led posts?
And I won’t lie, I have NEVER watched a video that a blogger has posted. I use an RSS feed and often read on my phone or procrastinate at work, so it’s just never the right atmosphere for a video.
My summary: you do you. People will flock to authenticity. Tell us the things that legitimately excite you, what you spend your time doing, and photograph the things you want to eat. xxx
Hi Rebecca, Thank you!! seriously so nice!
This is really helpful feedback!! I think slowing down could seriously help me and i could start including more in every post so this is seriously helpful!! Doing what i have fun doing is so important to me!(:
Thank YOU!!
I would love to see combo ideas…what happy hour drink would go with those carnitas? What app could I serve with it? Where could I visit to have the best pork carnitas in the world (I love to travel and try new foods)? If this was for a Cinco de Mayo celebration, what would you wear?
These are just ideas though- I think the best part of your blog is the photos of the food. Visuals are the best way to communicate to our generation!
I think those are very fun ideas!! I really want to try and start doing stuff like this so look out in the near future(:
The photos are here to stay soooo thats good!!
Thanks MAry Beth
LOL–I always think I’m annoying if I leave a message too often.
I so enjoy your blog and and all the adventures you and your family have.
I never have missed reading a blog since I found it a couple of years ago–I even went back and read it from the beginning.
I think you should add any topic that brings joy to your life and it will do well just like the food topics do now.
I don’t know if you can say this anymore–ok this will make me look old but “You Rock” as a blogger.
NO WAY!! you are so not!!
I love seeing your comments!!
Thats the best to hear! I will do exactly that!! Thanks Nancy
I have been following your blog since day one and have enjoyed it so mud. I have tried many of your recipes and have never been disappointed. But strange enough, last Tuesday or Wednesday I thought I might delete the blog, which I receive daily.
Everything was looking the same….pictures, although beautifully taken..all looked the same….plated with large pieces of greenery on top….not appetizing enough for me to make what lies below. I also think lots of hanks of meat while appealing to some, doesn’t aways encourage me to repeat the recipe.
Many eat lighter and I am sure you could hit it out of the ballpark if you shook it up bait…..You are truly talented…time to expand.
I never leave comments on blogs, but I read yours every day. Don’t let your social anxiety dictate what you do. Do what you love and what you’re good at. Food is very clearly it.
Hi, lindsey thanks for commenting!! And thank you(:
I would love to see entertain/dinner party posts! Recipes that are easy to make for a lot of people – maybe even party menus with suggestions of a few courses that would go well together and with what drinks! Your food is always beautiful and perfect for showing off to other friends!
Hi Vicky ive had quite a few comments saying the same!! So i am going to try and get more of it going!!
Thank you so much (:
Hi Tieghan,
I never, EVER leave comments on blogs, but this post encouraged me to do so… I look forward to checking out your new recipes almost daily (my obsession with your blog is slightly out of control). Literally everything that I have made is not just good, but an absolute hit, from the apricot walnut pesto and brie stuffed chicken breasts to the Italian chicken chili, I have never once been disappointed! I also love seeing your pictures, you definitely have a knack for taking the most beautiful food pictures. I don’t think that you need to change the blog at all! However, I understand the urge for growth so maybe try something that is not too far outside of what you are already doing. For example, a series that is once per month on entertaining or under 30 minute weeknight recipes or slow cooker Sunday recipes.
Hope this helps! Keep doing what you are doing- you are awesome!
I can’t wait for your cookbook!
HI devon!! wow! thank you!! means so much to me!
I think thats a really cool idea to not branch to far to keep people who are comfortable with what im doing still on the site! So thank you!! And i hope you love the cookbook!
I love your blog, I watch it everyday and I try to recreate most of your recepies 🙂
I love that you use bold flavors and spicy food.
It there was something more to wish for, I would like more food and starters and less baking.
Just love your spicy food and flavors and I really depend on them for my cooking.
You are the one that got me interested in cooking 🙂
Love your site
WOW!! So awesome that i got you interested into cooking? I can most definitely do more food!! Thank you so much!!
Hi does this taste sweet? Also I agree, just do you, and less desserts more healthy entrees! Thanks!
Perfect!! just what i like!! Thank Ginny
Love your blog! It would be great to always include a few quick and easy (and flavorful) recipes. I too love your photography. It would be even better if you included photos of the different steps of a recipe, instead of just the finished product. I would find that super helpful!
Hi sue!! Thats perfect! I can most definitely do more of this!! Thank you so much for the ideas(:
It seems you have been doing the right thing already. Your blog is a popular blog to say the least. I do love to read about your family and watch the videos. Maybe some behind the scenes of dad washing the dishes, mom and other family trying your recipes would be fun. HA!!
Thank you!! Im going to keep doing the usual and hopefully more videos!! Maybe some behind the scenes stuff too! My dad doing dishes!! hahaha!
Thanks Charlotte!
Wow, Tieghan, you’ve gotten quite a lot of positive feedback. Sure hope it’s what you needed to hear. With the number of posts you put out each week and the amount of recipes you’ve had to create and test for your cookbook I would imagine you might be feeling the need to shift gears from food occasionally. I love HBH just as it is. Your consistently unique and delicious recipes and brilliant photography is what keeps me coming back but that doesn’t mean I’m not interested in whatever else you might have up your sleeve. You’ve got to fulfill your creative potential. Test the waters if you’re feeling it.
Its Amazing and just what i needed! haha!
Thank you somuch!! I love hearing people are open to things I would like to try! I really think it so cool that you guys enjoy my work??
Thanks Jean
I have always heard about using a can of coke in carnitas but your post just gave me the encouragement to try it out! As for your blog, I would love to have some more lifestyle posts and read your thoughts on fashion. Also, I LOVE your barn pictures and I love reading what you have done in renovations. I love to see more of your kitchen….maybe some decorating posts? I’m sure anything you do will be fabulous!
What did you think!?
Those are all amazing ideas!! I think that i will really try to include more into my post that have more than just food! Maybe even the fashion!!
I really appreciate taking the time for your input(:
I am 71 yrs. old and a subscriber who reads your blog daily. My suggestion is to write about whatever makes YOU happy. You blog because it obviously fills you with joy. Your angst is part of life! I read recipes for fun! I don’t cook everything but I LOVE to read them and your photography is beautiful! Tieghan, the stories about your family, your goats, your barn and your food are interesting. Write about what you are doing and what is fulfilling to you. I love it all!!
WOW This is amazing! Thank you so much Jeanne! Hearing that you love what i am doing means so much to me! I love that you enjoy reading my post! I will absolutely continue to share more and more about everything i do!! Thanks for reading and commenting!!(:
Everything you make and shoot is beautiful, and this is no exception
Wow! Thanks so much Matt(:
I love the blog and your recipes. Like many have said, continue to keep it real and I will continue to follow! I’m a new mom and working full time so I love that you have so many dinner options for people to make happen in real life. I also like another commenters suggestion of combo ideas…what you would serve with a dish for drinks, appetizers, etc.
YAY I will continue to do what I am!! Also try and add in more combos!! so simple yet such a good idea! Thanks Renee!!
I love reading your posts with the mix of food-focused content and stories from your everyday life. I think it makes you more personable and real than just sharing a recipe. I truly look forward to reading your posts for that reason. I think it would be fun to see more entertaining/party posts, since I’m personally also interested in hosting parties and would love to incorporate some of your ideas and advice into my own get-togethers!
AWesome!!! I think thats going to be a big focus is more story and more party entertaining stuff!! So thank you Jessica!!
I’d love to see some fashion posts and hear more about your story pre-blog and what got you into fashion!
Hi Jenn!! Im excited and nervous!! but i think i am going to try the fashion stuff out and maybe they’ll include my backkground in it and what all happened there ??
Thank you!!
First, your blog doesn’t miss anything! Love the short stories in every blogpost, but as some others have mentioned, it could be fun to read some post just about what’s happening in you life. It could also be interesting if you looked back at some of your older recipes and showed some other ways they could be served e.g. these carnitas could be serve in a pita bread.
BUT seriously, nothing is missing!
Hi Patricia! First thank you!! Thats so nice of you to say.
I think i will try to include more of what is happening in my life!
Also a really cool idea to look back at my older stuff and find new creative ways to eat!! I may have to use it!!
Thank you!!
2x You’re welcome.
One of topic question, do you know circa when your book will be published? Can’t wait to buy it!
Hi Patricia! My cookbook will be out in the fall of 2017. So excited that you are excited to buy it, thank you!!
Do I have to wait to fall 2017?!
LOL!! I wish we didn’t! ?
Okay, first of all, YAAAAAAAY! Thank you for sharing this recipe! We raised our own pork last year, and I finally have the time now that school is done to start using it in lovely recipes. 😀
I think I am going to echo some of your other readers, but maybe that is a good thing. I would also love to see some behind-the-scenes of how you develop recipes. I would also love to see more highlighting of the cooking hardware you use, ie. the crockery, implements, cutlery, etc. You have such beautiful and unique items, and I am a kitchen-store maniac. I love your idea of sharing fashion, particularly work fashion for girls on the go, even if you tend to work independently and from home (what I am aiming to do too). I also love the idea of entertaining posts (would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see your take on an afternoon tea [the little tea sandwiches, cakes, etc. omggggg]).
I am one of the readers that absolutely loves hearing your family and farm stories, so I say keep that up! If you get an overwhelming sense that people only want the recipes, maybe it would make sense to keep track of the lifestyle stories and then every two weeks or so make a specific lifestyle-only post that people could read or not as they like.
I love everything you do, so more of everything! Woo! 🙂
Hi Kate, I am getting lots of behind the scenes comments so YES! Im excited to do them! i will try my best to include everything I use!! Also definitely going to do more entertainment stuff!!
For the fashion stuff, Im very nervous about it but I think people are interested it so i’m going to try!
I’ll have to look into doing an afternoon tea!!
I will absolutely keep up with the family stuff!! I love writing about it too!
Thank you so much Kate!
Hey Teigan! I’m sorry you are feeling kind of bummed about your lack of comments, I’ll bet a lot of people read all your posts on your app, like I do, and there just isn’t a place on there for leaving comments!
Personally, I love reading about your wonderfly crazy family and life. You guys are very cool. There is never a dull moment around your house is there? I am a blog nerd, so maybe some behind scenes posts? About your cookbook (I can’t wait!!!) ??? And more about the process you take, from brainstorming, to recipe developing, to shooting? And YES to your lifestyle and fashion posts ideas! You are at the very top of my must-read-everyday blog list, but I’m afraid that I’m not a very good comment leaver, so I’m sorry, just know that there are tons of people who love to see your work! That’s an amazing compliment in and of itself! Thank you for all the hard work, long hours, mountains of dishes (your Dad sounds like a super hero by the way!) and frustration you sacrifice every day, you really do have something increasing special here!
Hi brittney!! I had NO idea the app didn’t allow comments!! haha!
So rarely is there a dull moment!! The behind the scenes stuff is going to happen!! Fashion stuff has me nervous but i think i will try and incorporate it in!!
Its so nice to hear from you its the small moments of discouragement!! haha. just needed a little bit of motivation!!
Thank you so much Brittney!
Your blog is always visually stunning and I find myself coming back over and over again not only to see the innovative recipes, but to see how you style and photograph your dishes.
That being said, I wouldn’t mind seeing some behind the scenes posts or more posts centered around entertaining for different occasions. Your recipe archive allows me to piece together some gorgeous meals, but I would be doubly inspired to see a comprehensive post around a certain entertaining idea. XO
HI Gina!
Thank you so much for you kind words, I am SO flattered!! I am loving the idea of entertaining post as well, it’s totally my kind of thing and I am excited to jump in an work on a few post! Thanks again! 🙂
Hi, I have never really looked at blogs before and this is all new to me but your recipes kept popping up on pintrest so I decided to check hbh out. I love it, I check every day and always feel inspired so thank you. I love your blog but understand how sometimes we need to evolve, I like the idea of having entertainment ideas added as I too love having guests and making them lovely things, brunch has become a regular thing hont hint 🙂 I am sure whatever you do will be amazing, I can’t wait to see what you do
Wow! Thats amazing!! Thank you so much!!
The entertainment stuff seems to be a hit so i think thats one way i am headed for sure! Bruch ideas!! Got it!!(:
Thanks so much!!
Hey Tieghan,
I’ve only commented a few times, but I absolutely love your blog (like, daily in-bed morning obsession) and can honestly say I have NEVER had one of your recipes flop – and usually I get multiple recipe requests when I bring a dish to share with family :). Can I just say how excited I am for the cookbook?! Thank you so much for putting all the time and effort in necessary to make that happen, I know it’s no easy task.
I love the idea of posting “menus” with an end toward entertaining. I love cooking, but am still experimenting with putting together a mix of dishes that all complement/improve on each other when served together. Also, to include the timing of how to make it all come together would be so helpful! I find that one of the most stressful parts of putting on a meal.
One more thought – I love hearing about bloggers’ favorite kitchen tools. What would you absolutely spend good money on? What’s the tool you find yourself using over and over again? Favorite size dutch oven? LOVE hearing the answers to all these and more.
Thanks so much for the beautiful blog! My husband and I both come from big families and totally appreciate the craziness that entails. You always inspire to keep calm and cook on :).
Well first of all!! i am so happy you commented on this one! Second Thank you so much for the nice word(:
I love that idea of doing dishes that compliment i think that this could absolutely be something I see myself trying to do in the near future! And adding lots of detail in timing and all the goods!
I have had a few comments about the tools actaully! so i think i may need to get on doing something like that!
Thank you so much for reading my crazy blog!! Haha!
Keep calm and cook on ((:
If your fashion sense matches your recipe genius, I’d love see what you love in fashion! You are my favourite blog…thank you!
WOW Thank you!! I’m not so sure about the fashion stuff but i think i may have to test it out!! Thanks Cheryl
First of all: YUM. Will definitely be trying these out!
As far as mixing up the content, I would *love* some “dinner party” type posts! I usually gravitate toward one dish but have trouble rounding out the meal, so it would be great to see how you go about choosing all of the different dishes, what cocktails might go well with it, etc.
I’m also a total sucker for fashion/lifestyle type blogs, so I think it would be great to mix in some posts along those lines. Maybe how you balance all of this cooking with exercise, what your go-to daily meals are, how you go about decorating/organizing your kitchen, etc. And I’d love to see some fashion posts thrown in there, like seasonal trends, outfits for certain occasions, the core wardrobe pieces you can’t live without, whatever.
Well YAY Glad you like the Carnitas!
I like the dinner party post as well! So i think i will be trying to do more of them soon!
I like the idea of mixing them in.. not making their own post so that if people are interested they can enjoy what i have to say and if not then they can just keep reading the rest of the post! Really good ideas(:
Thanks Nikki!
Hi!
The inventiveness of your recipes and the incredible rustic presentations/photography basically ensure that you run the best food blog on the internet (in my opinion). I would LOVE to see more behind the scenes work (Whenever I want to organize my kitchen/pantry I go to your Crate and Barrel blog post for motivation :D). Fashion would be awesome and a definite yes to entertaining posts!! Ultimately though, do whatever you feel is going to give you the most satisfying challenge.
First Thank you!! That means a lot! I am surely going to behind the scenes after seeing lots of comments about it! Im hoping to try out a few fashion additions here in the future so we will see! I think i just needed some motivation to try new stuff!! Thank you!!
You have no idea how much my blog and I can resonate with your thoughts on your blog. Sometimes you just have this slump where your content seems to look entirely the same! The best that you can do is to find inspiration, and I find so much from your blog already! 😀 Anyways, I remember that you did a pantry tour which was really beautiful because we got a lot of insight on interior design AND what you keep in your kitchen! I think that if you do a fridge tour or a kitchen essentials post, it would be so helpful for those just starting their journey with health and with cooking!
Its funny that we are thinking the same!! haha! Thats a great idea!! Maybe I could try an incorporate more of that into a behind the scenes type post? OR more of its own post?
Thanks Cassie!!
You know how you have a favorite tv show and love it, but then they start changing the whole premise of the show? It’s because the writers get bored with the same old pattern, but the viewers hooked into the show because of that pattern they loved and then find themselves dismayed that their favorite show is no longer the same. People watch a show for a reason and when they change that reason they stop watching. You don’t realize how many people like the way your blog is already. It is like comfort food for us – you don’t mess with what works. Sure you can add a few fun variations but it has to stay close to the true base or it is no longer the comfort food that we know and like.
I like the awesome photos, the personalized narration you add of your life and your family (which makes you different from so many cooking blogs that just toss out recipes and that’s it) and of course your amazing creative recipes. I will say I rarely watch videos of you or anyone. But I do often wonder how you come up with your recipes. It would be great if you would add some simple recipes now and then for those of us with limited budgets and time. Maybe a “Simple Saturday” theme recipe day?
Don’t try to be everything to everyone. You will burn out. To me, fashion and cooking are two separate blogs, but helpful cookware and tools, unique serving dishes, beautiful table linens, herb and veggie gardens, and kitchen design ideas are subjects that interest most cooks. Again, perhaps you could have a set day per week where you provide several links to cooking stuff you love, instead of a recipe that day. It gives you a day off from cooking, writing, and taking pictures, but let’s us drool over kitchen eye candy we might want to have.
There are so many reasons people don’t comment. Many of us have small devices that require a Masters degree in patience to type on. And many of us are so in awe of your posts we just don’t have anything to add. Please understand that often our silence is merely a compliment to the Chef.
Hey Chris,
Thank you so much for your kind and honestly very smart words. Your advice/encouragement means a lot and has me thinking maybe sometimes change is not exactly what you need to do. That said, I love the idea of creating easier and simpler recipes, so that’s on tap for the future!! Again, thank you so much!! You comment has been so helpful!! Have a great Friday! 🙂
Hey girl!
I love your blog and always find some time during the day to read it without ever being bored (This is impressive for me because I don’t always stick with things!). I am in high school and I know that I’ve commented on some of your posts after I make your food. I have been reading for about 1 1/2 years and my family is really into the blog too always asking what your new recipes are and what going on in your life!
What made me fall in love with this blog (only one I read daily!) is your personality and how young you are. A lot of blogs are written by mom’s and they talk about their kids and stuff and I’m just not at that point in my life yet.
My advice is don’t overdue it! There are days when your talk about how long it’s been since you’ve had a shower and have good stains on your clothes from days before. I love being busy (on my way to a track meet right now) so I totally get it just don’t burn yourself out.
As for the blog, I know others have said but behind the scenes posts sound great, more videos (I get a sense of you!), and I would LOVE some fashion posts and I’m sure you would be great at it. 😉
A change is definitely a good thing and your loyal fans will stick with you through everything. Like others have said people like authentically so don’t be afraid to just be you. Thank you Tieghan for all your hard work!
(Haha sorry for the length! Just so much to say.)
Kristen
Hi Kristen!! I’m so happy you commented! Its seriously so amazing to hear you’ve been reading this long! and means so much to me! I know your right about not overdoing it! I just love being as busy as i can be! I complain but i secretly love how busy i am! lol!
I am totally going to try and include more behind the scenes stuff! Im so happy to hear you think its cool to see how my day to day stuff goes! And the fashion scares me!! But i think i am going to try and do some stuff with it soon! ??
Seriously so happy you commented! ? Thanks Kristen!! Talk soon!!
That big bowl of carnitas is so tempting! I just want to dive in with my fingers. I love the idea of party posts on entertaining! I think it’d be such a natural segway with your naturally gorgeous food and photo staging. I’d love to know how you arrange things & set the scene!
Thank you!! I loved the party posts! And i totally agree! Thanks for the photo compliments?? Maybe a little behind the scenes stuff to then?
You want to know something amazing? You can do this in a pressure cooker too!!! It’s crazy but I made an almost identical recipe in my pressure cooker for dinner last night….. oh my word crazy amazing! Like I wanted to lick all the utensils amazing AND my hubby with the New England Yankee palette loved them too!!! Now I’m off to heat up the leftovers and make a pot of pressure cooker rice with some lime and cilantro.
WOW no way!! Thats so awesome!! i Have to try that! Thanks Peggy!! Sounds amazing!
Just wanted to say LOVE your blog, and I just wanted to remind you to do you. If you want to do fashion because you love it, then do it girl!
Also, have you ever thought about having a podcast like a couple cooks? I love theirs!! Also party/event planning sounds so up your ally! I think that would be awesome!! Really though anything you do will be amazing!! One of my favorite things about your blog is how excited you always are!! Oh I also think life in a day post are always kind of fun! But above all else just keep doing you!!
THANK YOU!!! I Think I’m going to have to try the fashion out!! I haven’t thought about the podcast before but maybe ill have to look into it! Thats a great idea!! Such a nice comment thank you Steph!
Hello! I always enjoy hearing about your life and family!! I would totally be into entertaining posts and dinner party ideas! Also, I don’t know if I’m in the minority here, but I loved the way the blog looked before one recipe in a row, rather than a grid. When I visit the homepage, I feel like it’s sensory overload sometimes. Like each of your pictures is practically a work of art and I would love to see just one big picture with the intro and then the next picture underneath rather than three smaller pictures in a row. But other than that, HBH is my happy place!!
I am totally going to try and include more of my family when possible!! And I loved doing the entertaining post! So more to come!! Whats funny is i was never sold on the grid look but I was convinced over time! So hmm maybe a different layout again? We’ll see! Your happy place! I love that! Thank you so much!
Hi! I love your blog, and thought it was at its most interesting when you were doing the healthier recipes. It’s difficult to find blogs with healthy recipes that are as beautiful as yours! I think that’s a little niche in the blogosphere that you could nicely fill. Congrats on such a fantastic blog. It’s one of the ones I check most frequently.
WOW! Thank you !! I love the healthy recipes myself! (Mostly the ones i eat too) I Absolutely plan on continuing doing them!!
Your blog is hands down the best thing I have ever come across on the Internet. Your recipes have absolutely transformed how my husband and I eat! I would second that I’d like to hear about the tools and kitchen gadgets you use – what do you love, what do you hate, and why? I’d also be interested in fashion/lifestyle posts!
Keep up the great work!!
WOW Thank you Mia that means so much! I think I can try and incorporate that stuff in behind the scenes stuff! And absolutely talk about what i like/dislike! The fashion makes me nervous but seems like people wanna see what i think so i may have to try it out!
Thanks Mia!
Hey there, I love your blog! The photography is always on point and your writing is upbeat, making me smile whenever you post something new! I’d be interested in whatever content you post!
By the way, your crockpot instructions look convincingly like the dutch oven one. 😉
Ah that is so nice!! Thank you! And please let me know what you think when i do try some of these knew ideas!! ?
Fashion posts would be amazing! I’d love to see your style.
So nervous for these!! But i think i may have to try some!! Thanks Bella!
Hi there! I only just recently started reading your blog and I am in love! I want to try so many of these recipes!
I love your idea of dinner party posts! I have always wanted to get more ideas for things like that. Plus I love all your pictures of food and would love to see more pictures of how you serve the food and stuff. And as a fashion blogger, I think seeing some fashion posts would be awesome as well!
Keep up the great work! I won’t be getting tired of your blog anytime soon.
I’m so happy you like my blog!! More party post for sure! The Fashion makes me nervous! I’ll have to check out your blog!! Thanks for helping!! I need some more confidence! LOL!
please please please do fashion posts!! I would love to see something like that. Your recipes and photos are so creative already and I love the style of your props, so I would love to see more of your personal style!
Ah!! Im nervous to do the fashion but am seriously considering it! Lots of people seem interested ?? so we’ll see!! Thanks Chelsea
These look amazing! Huge fan of your recipes and would very much enjoy more posts on entertaining. We love having people over for dinner and I feel like I only have a handful of meal options I recycle amongst guests. Would love to read more about what you’d suggest!
Thanks Mary! Im really into the entertainment side lately so I will hopefully be doing more post that incorporate it soon!!
I don’t respond very often, but I always love reading your blog and have made many recipes from your site, and all have been excellent. You have a natural talent for this, so just keep on keepin’ on, and if you feel the need to expand your horizons on the site, then of course, do so. As long as you are enjoying what you are doing, that is all that truly matters.
Thank you for commenting on this one!! Thanks so much for trusting me to put out good content!! I think I may have to try some new stuff soon!! So please let me know what you think when i do☺️☺️
Tieghan! First of all, this looks delish! Second, I’d lovelovelove any behind the scenes/life posts or videos! I always really like to hear about the families of the bloggers I follow and their day-to-day life (even when you think it’s boring…), and even better when I get to see or hear it as if I were actually there, ’cause I’m a creepo like that. ? Thirdly, I like your long vids best. The ones where you talk us through the recipe, as well as chatting about random life (see above)…extra bonus points if a sibling makes an appearance, so we can see the people you talk about (again, and probably super-creepy and weird…). ? I also think fashion would be cool, too, as I’m always curious about styles that would look good together, what the latest “thing” is, etc. But whatever makes you happy and energized, that’s the main thing. ?
First of all Thank you!! Al the feedback is amazing!! I’m seriously thinking about trying to get some behind the scenes going! Because as you can tell from my stories… my family can be pretty funny?? As for the videos! At the moment i have a few more quick ones coming! But I want to shoot some more longer ones! I have been getting a lot of people saying they liked them! Im nervous about the fashion incorporation! But i may be trying to get some stuff in there here and there!! Thanks so much hannah!! I really appreciate it!☺️
Would love to see fashion posts as well as entertaining ideas. Thanks for all your great recipes.
Awesome! Thanks Celine!! I think its so cool you guys are interested in the fashion side of me!!☺️
I love my slow cooker and I love carnitas – I am going to have to make this. I have a bottle of cherry coke I bought to make ribs with, could I use that with these as well? Also do you have a recipe for cola ribs?
This looks so delicious Tieghan well done. I personally would like to see some entertaining style posts – I’ll be honest, fashion blogging isn’t really my thing and being in the UK I wouldn’t be able to source much of what you recommended anyway 🙂
Hi!! I think the Cherry Coke would work just as well!! Sadly I don’t have any ribs recipe with Cola):
I’m excited to hear that you’re interested in the entertaining posts!! I like them as well!! I’ll keep the fashion stuff little so it is not too bothersome!!
Thank you!!
Re: Cherry Coke substitute, ANY soft drink that contains REAL sugar – or honey – will work, but anything containing a sugar substitute will not only never caramelize, but will ruin the dish w/ its chemical off-tastes. I’ve used ginger ale with success on chicken, dolled up with leeks, onions, and just a touch of celery. I wonder how cream or grape soda would do???
Hey Mike! Thanks for the tips! I have never used cream or grape soda (nor have I ever even tried them), so I really cannot say. I think anything with a real sugar will work great though. Thank you!
i love your recipes, especially the burgers( best!!!) and desserts you make. as much as we all love helathy recipes, please keep the posts for luxury desserts coming too. i just love your desserts , also some hairstyle posts would be so awseome and makeup turorials if you are into it.
i also love that you post everyday. i look forward to them every morning.
HI!! Thanks so much!! There’s more of all of that coming!!
I’ve never thought about doing tutorials before!! Maybe I can try that out!!
Thanks SO much!! Have a good weekend!
I LOVE this blog! I check it every morning and have cooked tons of your recipes. Whenever I have a special occasion or some down time, I come here to find a new outside-of-the-box recipe. My favorites have been the carne asada chili and the salted caramel cookie tart. I really enjoyed the menu that you put together for Christmas – I would love to see more menus – with recipes of course :), and possibly some entertaining and home decorating tips. Keep doing what you’re doing – you have a unique spin on things and this blog and the recipes really stand out from the crowd!
AWH!! Thank you so much!!
I think the menus are great too so I will be trying to get more of those going again!!
Thank you again for taking the time to comment, and also for the kind words(:
I’ve mentioned this before, but I’ll say it again: I really believe you can do no wrong. Everything that you put on the site is gorgeous and tasty and I always feel like I get a glimpse into your life from the little tidbits you share in each post. This is my favorite blog that I follow (and I’m SUPER excited for your cookbook!!!!). However, more Tieghan would be a great thing! More fashion would be awesome! More entertaining, yes! Also, I always love to see “What I ate today”, “What I do in a day”, and favorite internet links posts on other blogs. I support whatever you end up doing with the blog… well, as long as you keep some vegetarian recipes! 🙂
Hi Rachel!! This is so nice! Thank you so so much for the nice words.
I’m super nervous about trying some of the things that have been mentioned! But at some point I think I want to jump in and try them! Especially the fashion and entertainment. This is the first I’ve heard of “what I ate” type stuff, and I think that could be super fun!! So maybe I can try that out to at some point!!
Thanks again Rachel!!
I enjoy your site because it’s well balanced between food and other talk. Though all of us here like to cook, we probably like to talk while we’re doing so, and gain new cooking expertise along the way. My only suggestion is more along the lines of a preference: more big, one-pot meals!
Re: Coke in carnitas – this is similar to using Dr. Pepper as a marinade for lamb, which is great BBQed, braised, or baked. Same idea: put those sugars to work on the meat instead of on you! There are infinite variations on this theme.
I’ll end w/ a question: boneless or bone-in pork for the carnitas? The bone-in crowd touts cheaper price and deeper flavor over ease of cooking, which makes sense to me. And, cut it into chunks before you cook it, or afterwards? Your thoughts?
Best wishes for continued success in all you do!
Hey Mike!
Thank you so much! I am so excited you enjoy the blog the way it is, but I love the idea of more one-pot meals! 🙂 I like to buy bone in typically and I cut it into chunks before cooking. Let me know if you have any other questions. Hope you love the carnitas! 🙂
I found your blog around Christmas time this last year. I think it is amazing! Your photography is magazine beautiful. And that you do 6 recipes a week……..awesome! I don’t know how you do it. Lest alone create new recipes, but then photo and blog about each recipe in the great detail you share each day. When do you sleep? I am in absolute awe of your photography skills and your presentation. I have made several of your recipes and my family has enjoyed every one. Deliousness! These carnitas will be on my husband’s plate as soon as I thaw out a pork butt. I would love some behind the scenes stuff, but really anything you share I will read.
Awh, Thank you so much Peggy!
It’s a lot of work, I think I manage it well cause in the end it’s fun to me!
I’m so happy you guys enjoyed everything so far!
I think that I’d like to get into some behind the scenes, so be on the lookout!!?
Your blog is one of my favorites…I love your recipes (except ones with chia seeds lol) and I love to hear about your life and your family..goats, chickens, snow Asher your brothers your parents…It’s all good and it helps us to know you better. Everything you do is just awesome.
THANK YOU!! That’s all the stuff I love to talk about!! Perfect!! ??
Amazing! I’m always looking for a new way to cook pork shoulder at home and this is making my mouth water!
YAY! I hope you love it Alexe!
First, you are so brave to ask!
Second, I’m all nooooooo on the videos! I even slept on the answer before commenting.
halfbakedharvest is such a comforting place. Like warm milk before bed (metaphorically!) literally, this is one of three blogs I read under the covers every night while husband is asleep next to me. Video would wake him, so I never watch it. And Saturdays I plan my meal prep and video sounds like a stumbling block. I’ve made at least a half dozen of your recipes in my tiny nyc kitchen already this year!
I think this blog is so lovely as is! Have you tried the “5 whys” technique to uncover why you are compelled to “do more”? (This is an actual ‘design thinking’ practice, I didn’t make it up!). Ask yourself “why” and when you come to an answer, ask why again. Question that answer as well, and so on 5x. This should help you identify the real challenge you are solving for, in order to help make any changes you DO pursue the most meaningful and authentic to you.
Btw when my design projects get to stressful, I dream about quitting and moving to the mountains and blogging about homemade marshmallows. Not that I have ever made a marshmellow in my life. If I ask why enough times: because blogs like yours are my perfect zen escape. ( alt answer: because spun sugar and air are actually more tangible than business designs most days! )
Hey Lauren!! You are so sweet! Thank you so much for your kind words I am so happy you love the blog just the it is, yeah!!! 🙂 While I personally love the idea of videos, it’s good to hear your point of view on them! Again, thank you for the kind and encouraging words. Hope you are having a great weekend!
PS. i hope you get to move to the mountains and make all the marshmallows! 🙂
Tieghan, you’ve already gotten so many lovely comments, I’m not sure you need yet another. Here’s how I found out about your blog. I was standing in book signing line to meet Jessica (How Sweet It Is). I had decided to start my own blog and was a week away from publishing my first post. I struck up a conversation with the woman in front of me and we started chatting about blogs. I asked her what her favorites were and yours was one of two or three she mentioned. That’s when I checked it out and that’s when I subscribed. I’ve been following ever since. Now that I’ve been blogging for about a year and a half and know what it takes to put out just one post, I am in awe of your content creation rate. I agree with a lot of the feedback you’ve received. Stay true to who you are and do what inspires you. Your core content is wonderful so if you want to retain your core followers I wouldn’t make a complete change. In retail, so often companies decide they’re going to do something completely different and they end up losing their core customer. I think you can test out different additions and see how they work. I love the idea of adding simple recipes. I love the idea of entertaining posts. I can’t remember if it was Harry Potter or Halloween, but that post with the whole layout was fun and really maps out a great way to entertain. It takes alot to put a compelling menu together and those kinds of posts make it easy. As a fellow foodie, I would love to hear about how you come up with your recipes and what inspires you. I love the idea of behind the scenes. A shot of your dad doing the dishes would be great…or when the goats arrive. You have such an interesting family, there’s so many visuals of what it’s like for you in daily life. Having worked in the fashion industry my whole career, I’m sure that would be interesting but only if it was something you really wanted to do. I also agree with the person who said slow down. Give yourself time to think and time to rest. Sometimes even the most passionate endeavors can burn you out if you don’t have some balance. I love the 5 Whys technique Lauren mentioned. I’m going to try that out for myself. In the end, trust your instincts and give yourself time to listen to them.
Hi Ramona! Thanks so much for taking the time to read and comment!!
That story of how you found my blog is awesome!!
I think you’re right, and I don’t want to do any huge changes, maybe just some new fun stuff to mix it up every once in a while. Things like how I come up with my recipes and a little behind the scenes stuff! A shot of my dad doing the dishes! YES!
Thanks so much Ramona! It really helps to receive all this input! ?
I did not read all of the above comments, but it did seem as if you had tons of positive feedback. I’ve read your blog from early on. I do not read it every day because there is never enough hours in the day. I don’t use social media (is that the correct term for a blog) on a daily basis. I do turn to yours for inspiration & you never fail me. I have no interest in fashion, but it’s your blog, & should be what You have passion for. Who knows, you might even inspire me to get out of my boot/flip-flop only routine…not likely thou:). I’m not sure why everyone wants the “behind the scenes” action. To me, that’s kinda like watching someone wash the dishes, I’d rather just see the beautiful end result. I do like the little snippets of family life, you have a really creative life, relax & enjoy it. This may be a hot button issue that you wouldn’t want to touch…what about adding some core, make people think, life issues occasionally? You do live in a “prohibition lifted” on Cannabius state, interesting. There’s also a lot of Fracking going on in the Rocky Mountains. It seems like your family travels all over the world, maybe some cultural exchanges? Keeping it light but a little controversy never hurt anyone. Just a thought. Stay true to who you are & the rest will fall in place. Best wishes.
I just wanted to add that some people would probably be turned off by the afore mentioned ideas. But you have such a large audience of world readers, who share a love for food, what better platform then to throw an idea out occasionally & see what type of response it brings. I think we have enough blogs on the superficial. Food is something that unites us, and you do that well.
Another idea…have you tried growing/raising any of your own food? It tends to change the way you eat and also the way you look @ the world. That would be an interesting journey to watch evolve.
Hi Sarah! I agree I think I will need to spread out the times I try some of this new stuff!
I do try and grow a few things when we can!! But living up in the mountains makes it very hard! I wish I could :/
Thanks Sarah!
Hi Sarah!! Thank you so much for taking the time to read and comment, it means a lot. I would love to possibly inspire you to get out of your flip-flop/boot routine…i need to do the same! As for the more controversial topics, hmm, I have never thought about that. Honestly that is not really my thing and I am not sure I want to get into touchy subjects like that, it could be very dangerous! I love the idea of chatting about cultural exchanges though and like you said, maybe touching on a few little controversial topics could be a good thing. I might to try do a little, but keep it light. Thanks again for reading and the great feedback! Have an awesome weekend! ?
Fair enough, totally understand. But maybe look into Permaculture alittle, you could grow there. Also, as meat eaters, raising our own meat (when possible) makes less demand for conventional/factory farming. Plus you get the added benefit of healthier meat. Not really what you were looking for when you threw this post out there…but just maybe it’ll lead you in a whole new direction.
Hi Sarah, thank you for taking the time to comment. I asked for suggestions and that’s exactly what you gave me, so thank you! I honestly don’t know much about permaculture, but now you gave me a reason to look into – THANKS! Tieghan
As a nonstop traveller I have to say your blog gives me LIFE and I’d hate to see it change too much…but you’ve got some great ideas that can’t go to waste!
Personally, I absolutely LOVE hearing all the behind the scenes and your crazy yet awesome sounding family and all that happens with you guys. I also am mega into recipe videos 🙂
Hope you see this and that it helps at all
Hi Natala, I not only saw your comment, but will definitely use your suggestions. A number of people have said that they would like more behind the scenes info and to hear more about my crazy family. Also, more videos are already in the works. Thanks so much for taking the time to comment! Tieghan
Hi! What’s the juice from two limes for? Thanks!
Hi Marilynn! So sorry about that, the juice from the limes should be stirred into the carnitas just before serving. Fixing the recipe now. Let me know if you have any other questions, thank you!
I fixed the recipe to reflect the changes, sorry! Just use the lime juice to drizzle over the pork once it is cooked.
I have a friend of mine (Hi Vicki!) who has been cooking her version of carnitas for close to 20 years. Everyone has loved them and she has fed many over the years. We have been following your blog ever since the whiskey blue cheese burgers(AWESOME!) She tried these the other day and they have now replace her recipe. I brought a taste home for my wife and now I have been ordered to produce a batch for her. They are perfection. Thank you.
Please don’t do fashion in this blog. Yes on equipment reviews and your preferences.
That is so amazing to hear!! I’m so happy you all liked the recipe that much:)
Thank you for for the feedback! It’s so good to hear what you are interested in coming to the blog!
Thanks Sterling!
Hello,
I was wondering what type of crock pot/slow cooker do you use/recommend ?
P.S. You have made me a favorite in the family for your four cheese mac and cheese recipe that I make every year for thanksgiving. I got in trouble one year when I didn’t make a double batch of it. haha Love your blog.
HI! I use a 6.5 quart All-Clad crockpot and love it!
That is AWESOME! Thank you so much! Have a great weekend! 🙂
Hello Tieghan……this is the first time I read ur recipe and have awestruck on the slow roasted pork…. Unfortunately I can’t try coz my family is vegan…..so I have 2 requests pls…..
1) if you are bringing a pork meat from shop(not frozen) but from a butcher shop how to identify if it’s healthy
2) Please can you post some vegan dishes which I can try it home
Hi!! So I am not sure what exactly you are asking about the pork, but I like to find a cut with some nice fat around the pork. Generally pork is a pretty simple and easy cut of meat to buy!! ☺️ and yes, I can definitely my post more vegan recipes, I love them! Thanks again!!
Made this tonight for the 2nd time in a week….delicious! And super easy. And Beth for the win! ?
WOO! That is so awesome! I am so happy these were great for you, twice!! Thanks Beth! ?
Hi T ! 🙂
Could you make this recipe in a caserole or a saucepan with a lid? I do not own a dutch oven or crockpot 🙁
Hey Camila! Yes, that would work great. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thank you! 🙂
Oh my I can’t wait to try these! LOVE your blog tieghan. It NEVER disappoints. I love how you cook with seasonal produce. More farm to table recipes would be awesome. Fashion..ain’t my thang, but if you love it, go for it. It’s so awesome to see all these happy readers! You have touched so many lives with your cooking. Food is love. Thanks so much for sharing!!
I am so glad you are enjoying these + I hope you love them if you get a chance to try! Thank you so so much Jenna!
Hi, Tieghan! Can’t wait to make this! It looks so good! Your recipe says total cook time 3 hrs 10 min, but your instructions only show it cooking for 1 1/2 hrs and then another 30 min? Thanks!
HI! So sorry about that. This is a typo. All fixed. Please let me know if you have other questions. Hope you love this recipe! Thanks! 🙂
this was a hit with my very mexican food snob son…i made jalepeno cilantro crema to add to the taco and OMG!! they were amazing!! the only part of the recipe that there was no measurement for was for the coke…wasnt in the list of ingredients so i assumed it was in place of the mexican beer and used that measurement?
Hi Lisa! No coke in this recipe, just beer. So sorry about the typo! Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you! xTieghan
HI Tiegen, I was planning on making these tonight but I don’t see where the Coca-Cola goes in. It’s not listed in the list of ingredients
Hey Judy! There is no coca-cola in this recipe. So sorry for any confusion. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you! xTieghan
What does the can of coke replace?
Hi Holly! There is no coke in this recipe. So sorry for any confusion. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you! xTieghan
Hi Tieghan,
I have used this recipe many times always with coca cola. You have changed something in the ingredients list right? I can see you are replying orhers that there is no coke in this recipe? But that must be a mistake because there used to be? Also, in the text you directly write:
“If you don’t drink Coca-Cola, and would prefer not want to buy any, you can also sub beer or just chicken broth. But I have to say, you should really give that can of Coke a try” – From this I understand it as if it is the coke that be substituted with beer or chicken broth?
I SO confused:-(
Hey Camilla! Yes, I changed the recipe to not include the cola as I don’t drink cola, so it was inconvenient for me to use. Does that make sense? You can certainly use cola if you prefer! Either is great! Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you! xTieghan
Great recipe! Love it. How would you make this in an Instant Pot? Thanks so much
I made this late in the afternoon and it was delicious! I served it on flour tortillas with thinly sliced raw cabbage, Jack’s salsa and avocado. I also used a cup of regular Coca Cola instead of beer. Thanks for a great recipe. It can easily be doubled to serve a crowd.
I am so glad this turned out so well for you Melissa! xTieghan
Hi Tieghan,
I have pork chops that I need to use for meal planning this week. They are 0.5-1 inch thick. Will they work for this recipe? I imagine the simmering time would be cut down?
Hi Caroline,
Yes you could use pork chops but don’t cook longer than an hour because the chops will be dry. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
Because of this covid-19 quarantine, I have finally had the time to really get into cooking for the enjoyment and taking my time. This is my first recipe from your blog that I’ve tried (2nd recipe I’ve ever tried from a blog in life!) and it was amazing!! I had more meat than I expected so I dropped some tacos off to my neighbors and received RAVE reviews.
I did the stovetop version and the liquid did not evaporate the way it was supposed to. I have an electric stove so maybe my “low” heat is too low??
Other than that, it was amazing! I can’t wait to try another recipe!
-Ashly
Hi Ashly! Thank you so much for trying this one, I am so glad you enjoyed it! I have never really cooked with an electric, but that could very well be the case. I hope you continue to love my recipes! xTieghan
Hi I just would like to know how to use the coke in this recipe? Do I use the whole can in place of the Stock or beer and still use the orange juice & water or is it a cup of coke , 1/2 c juice and water ? Thanks Dee

Hello, someone recommended this recipe to me but I’m not sure about it because the instructions say “The Coca-Cola will caramelize and the liquid will evaporate almost completely” but there’s no coke listed in the ingredients. Are you supposed to use coke in addition to the beer or chicken broth? If so, how much?
Thanks

Hello,
I came across this “my favorite slow roasted carnitas” recipe which looks amazing and I plan on making. I have one question. In the instructions for the Classic Slow Roasted Version on the Stove, it mentions, “The Coca-Cola will caramelize and the liquid will evaporate almost completely.” I don’t see that Coca-Cola is listed in the ingredients, so I’m a little confused. Can you help? Thanks so much!
Hi Martha! I apologize for the confusion! There is no Coca Cola in this recipe! Please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
Good morning Tieghan,
I am sure someone already mentioned this, but after scrolling the comments for quite a while I gave up looking and decided to post my question.
In the instructions it says the Coca-Cola will caramelize while cooking, yet the recipe it’s self has no mention of Coca-Cola. Help me out here and clear up the mystery. The final product sounds amazing!! Can’t wait to try it. Your recipes and pictures are an inspiration.
Shelly
Hi Shelly! There is no Coca Cola in this recipe! I am really sorry about the confusion! xTieghan
