Chocolate Lovers Greek Yogurt Chocolate Mousse Cake.
Chocolate lovers…this one is for you.

There really are no words for this cake other than incredible.
The base is like a brownie, the center is the silkiest, creamiest, chocolate mousse, and the top is pure chocolate heaven. And as if all that wasn’t awesome enough, this cake is one hundred percent HEALTHY! Not only is it loaded with PROTEIN and ANTIOXIDANTS, but it’s EASY to create. I mean, really could it get better? I am thinking no.
As you may or may not know, my mom’s Birthday was Wednesday. We actually did the main celebration a week ago, while my family was all in town still, but we never did cake. This meant that for her actual birthday we definitely needed cake. Now, my mom is a serious, serious chocoholic. If you’ve been reading a while than you’ve heard me say she drinks hot chocolate in the morning like most people drink coffee, and pretty much always has chocolate after every meal…actually sometimes it is her meal. <–Truth, she told me she had this cake as her lunch yesterday!
This last year or so however, she’s decided to drastically cut down on the processed sugar. She has been doing a lot of cacao based desserts and sweetening things with raw, organic honey or pure maple syrup. SO for her birthday cake this year, I decided to take one of her favorite desserts, chocolate mousse, and turn it into a super healthy and delicious cake!

The timing worked out really well, seeing as we are in the middle of Healthy January, which by the way, I am foreseeing these super healthy recipes flowing over into February. Most of the comments I am receiving seem to express that you guys are really liking the healthy, quick and easy eats? yes? no?
Anyway, I think my mom’s favorite dessert is my chocolate birthday cake, and I’m not going to lie to you guys, pretty sure she still likes that cake better than this one, BUT she loved this Greek Yogurt Chocolate Mousse Cake as well. This one just feels a little lighter, and it’s definitely much less sweet. Still completely delicious though, I promise!

The first layer of the cake literally tastes like a fudgey chocolate brownie. It’s insanely good and insanely good for us! Made up of heart healthy walnuts, coconut, antioxidant and fiber packed dates, cacao powder (or use unsweetened cocoa powder), and a pinch of flaky sea salt (my fav). Basically, healthy food, but in chocolate form. Also, if you’re looking for an easy to make, easy to eat, healthy dessert, you could make just this base and roll them into balls for little bite size snacks. That would be awesome!
The second layer is the mousse! Around here, we love chocolate mousse. Whenever I make chocolate mousse, I pretty much always make it the super simple way, meaning no eggs and lots of heavy cream. When I was sitting (on the ground in front of my oven cause I am always cold) thinking about this recipe, I wondered how greek yogurt would work in place of the cream. I love greek yogurt, so I was thinking it might be a good combo. I think the key is to use whole milk greek yogurt. It’s thick and creamy and has a consistency very similar to mousse. But…one, it’s so good for us, and two, it’s as easy as mixing cacao powder and yogurt together in a bowl and calling it a day. Ahh, yes please. I used a little raw honey to sweeten it up, but not a lot. If you like a sweeter mousse, just use more honey to your liking.
For the third layer, I went pretty much all chocolate (very dark chocolate). After all, I was making this with my mom in mind, so heavy on the chocolate was obviously a must!

This is hands down one of my favorite cakes. Honestly, you would never know how healthy it is if I didn’t tell you. The bottom tastes like a chocolate brownie, the center is light and creamy, and the top is chocolate heaven.
I finished the cake with a pop of color in the form of roasted pistachios and a few dried roses for fun. Perfect birthday cake…or Friday night treat!

Chocolate lovers...this one is for you.
Ingredients
- 1 cup raw walnuts
- 1/2 cup raw unsweetened coconut flakes
- 1 1/2 cups pitted packed dates (about 10 ounces)
- 1/2 cup cacao powder or unsweetened cocoa powder
- pinch of flaky sea salt
Greek Yogurt Mousse
Chocolate Ganache
- 3/4 cup full-fat canned coconut milk or heavy cream
- 5 ounces dark chocolate chopped
- chopped pistachios for topping (optional
Instructions
-
To make the crust. In a food processor, combine the walnuts, coconut, dates, cacao powder, and a pinch of salt. Pulse until finely ground and the mix forms a ball, about 5 minutes. Press the mixture into the bottom of an 8-9 inch spring form pan, making sure to pack it in tightly.
-
To make the mousse. Add the heavy cream to the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment or use a hand held mixer. Whisk the cream until stiff peaks form. Using a spatula, gently fold the greek yogurt into the whipped cream. Add the cacao powder, honey, and vanilla and stir until combined and creamy. Spread the mousse evenly over top the brownie layer. Cover and place in the fridge for 1 1/2 hours
-
In a microwave safe bowl, combine the coconut milk and dark chocolate. Microwave on power lever high for 30 second intervals, stirring after each until melted and smooth. Let cool five minutes, then pour the ganache over top the mouse. Sprinkle with pistachios. Chill 30 minutes or until ready serve.
-
Run a knife around the inside of the spring form pan and then release the cake from the pan. slice and serve!

The most perfect bite. For real.

Absolutely love this Tieghan. A totally guilt free dessert! Gorgeous. x
Thank you Debs!
My husband is allergic to tree nuts. Do you have a suggestion for a healthy substitute for the walnuts for the base layer of this dessert? It looks so yummy and healthy. I really would like to try it. Thank you.
Hi! Can he eat pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds? If so, I would use and equal amount of one of those. OR use and equal amount of coconut. Let me know if you have questions. Hope you love this!
You are a good daughter.
Thank you Nancy!
I’m not really into sweets, but for this, I’m with your mom. This cake looks incredible!! I want it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and several times in between. WOW! That batter looks incredibly rich. I will make this cake — FOR SURE! Have a great weekend.

Oh gosh…it probably wouldn’t be healthy for me because I would want to eat the whole thing! I would have to make this to share, or else I would be in trouble. That crust sounds amazing. I bet you could do a million things with it.
I also sit in front of my oven….toasty warmth is the best.
Happy Friday, T!
Haha I lobe that you sit in front of your oven as well.. it seriously is the best thing!! But anyway, thank you so much Annie!!

When I first saw this my initial reaction was “common! It’s January!” But now that I have read your ingredient list I am super happy because I have been specifically looking for some healthy sweet options as I craving them, badly. Sorry for getting mad!
Haha no worries! I am glad you are liking it now that you saw the ingredients! Thank you Stacy!
Bookmarking this for my own mom’s birthday! Thank you!

This looks awesome! And YES PLEASE to more healthy recipes in February!!
Thank you Rhian!
Another gorgeous recipe I’ll have to try, but first I’m heading to Amazon to pre-order your cookbook. I can’t wait! Sometime could you share secrets on how you stock your pantry/ fridge? I’m intrigued about how you get inspired on your hikes & come home and create! I live 10 miles from a grocery store & could REALLY use some tips. Thamks!!
Wow! What an incredible dessert! Perfect for all of those of us trying to be a little, ahem, healthier right about now 🙂
A great healthy treat! Thank you Melissa!
Do you ever put your recipes through a calorie counter before you say they’re “HEALTHY”?
This recipe is high in saturated fat and sugar. If you cut this “cake” into 8 servings and made it with coconut milk, each serving would have 530 calories. If you use heavy cream; 513 calories.
Hi Gigi, No I do not. I go by the ingredients I use and their health benefits, not by calories and the amount of fat. Dates, greek yogurt, honey and dark chocolate are all good things for us. Or at least that us my way of thinking. I also have no problem with coconut milk and see it as healthy as well. Sorry if you feel differently.
Wow! That looks so decadent!
Thank you Kari!!
UGH I WANT THIS RIGHT NOW!
Haha thank you Sara!!
Wow, this is so gorgeous!
Thank you Kate!
Your mom is a lucky woman…this sounds amazing! Happy Birthday to her!
Thank you Deb!
I just can not get over how gorgeous this cake is. Love this blog and your recipes!!
Thank you Jen!!
Layering chocolate on chocolate is always the right choice. Nice work!
Agreed! Thank you Kevin!
This looks amazing Tieghan and I will defiantly make it soon. I don’t have a microwave and was wondering if I could use a double boiler for the ganache. Love to look at how you express your creativity through food! Bravo!
This looks absolutely amazing! I can’t wait to try it! In replying to what you mentioned re: getting good feedback about the healthy recipes, I would have to agree I appreciate them as well. I absolutely adore most of the regular recipes you post, but I have to be careful & not serve them all the time or my pants would definitely complain, lol. Your desserts are pretty much always drool-worthy. Keep it up & thank you for sharing your culinary genius!
I hope you love this cake, Liana! Thank you so much!
This is something I will try.
Since you asked, I prefer your Fall comfort food.
Thanks
I hope you enjoy this cake, Bob! Thank you!
This cake looks fabulous! I’m definitely going to try it. Beautiful photography, as usual.
I believe in all things in moderation for a healthy diet, and would have no qualms about eating a slice of this cake. I do, however, wonder at you proclaiming that it is “100 percent healthy.” It is “healthier” than a cake made with white flour and white sugar, but a piece of fruit, say, would be a healthy dessert.
(Please don’t be offended at my comment. I’m not trying to criticize, but rather to participate in discussion, which I believe blogs invite.)
Hey Denise! I completely agree, I think blogs do invite discussion. Anyway, to me personally, the ingredients I used are healthy. I am not telling people that this is healthier than a piece of fruit, but if someone was to choose this cake over one made with refined sugar and flour, I would consider it a healthy dessert. With that being said, I do hope you try it & enjoy it! Thank you!
I will for shure have to try this!!! <3
I hope you love it Sanja!! Thank you!

I made this last week and boy is it rich! It’s really chocolatey and not too sweet. I didn’t use full fat greek yogurt (I think it was 2%) and the mousse came together fine. Love the date crust idea – nice and toothsome.
I would say you can easily make 12 servings out of this if worried about calorie counts. Thank you for the recipe!
Thank you so much Claire! I am glad you enjoyed this!
I love your creative mind! Love the layers here…putting this on my list to try for sure. And your garnish- so beautiful.
Thank you Emily!
Healthy cake?! Love this so much. And that mousse!
Thank you Matt!!
Thank`s for share information Love the layers here…putting this on my list to try for sure.
I hope you love it, Elton!! Thank you!!
Going to make this for my friend for his birthday tomorrow. Quick question: do you suggest unsweetened chocolate for the ganache? Thanks!
Catherine
Hi! I like to use semi-sweet or dark chocolate for the ganache. Hope everyone loves this. Thanks! 🙂
Love this chocolate dessert!
Thank you1
Hi, I live in Eastern Europe where no heavy cream for whipping is sold. It’s just not common to use it… Do you think that I can substitute it for anything in order to make the mousse? And do you think it will turn out OK if I make my own heavy cream with milk and melted butter? I REALLY want to make this cake 🙂 Thanks a lot!
Hi! Can you use more yogurt? I think that would work best. Let me know if you have questions.
Hi, this cake came out beautifully but we found the mousse portion to be too bitter – I used 2 TBSP honey (and I dont like sweet desserts)…any idea why mine was too bitter? Cocoa or the type of greek yogurt?
Hi Lauren, do you typically bake with cacao powder? If not, this is why you feel it was bitter, cacao is very bitter and you need to add a lot of sweetness to balance it. Next time, add 1/4 cup of honey and see how that goes or just use cocoa powder. let me know if you have questions. Thank you! 🙂
This is not easy to do, but it looks delicious, I’ll try.
Thanks, hope you love it!
This is great, That’s a great website, it really is what I was looking for, thank you for sharing!

This looks like another great recipe that I will make for Easter. My husband is diabetic but Chocolate Mousse Cake is his favorite dessert and he hasn’t had it in years. How early can I make this? Is it one of those desserts that tastes better with age?
Hey Rose! You can make this 1-2 days in advance. Hope you guys love this and have a great Easter!
This looks fun! My SO isn’t a cake person, so this might be a perfect dessert for a fancier dinner. Thanks for sharing!
Ah bummer, hope you get to try it at some point! Thanks!
Hi do you know the macro nutrient breakdown for this? Carbs, fats and protein? Sugar? Anyway you can email me the break down (bodybuilder here). Thank you!
[email protected]
Hi! I am sorry, I don’t know the nutrient break down.
look at delicous
Thanks !
Really? Honestly, you would never know how healthy it is if I didn’t tell you.
Not only is this recipe exciting because it’s a mostly raw dessert, but the ingredients are all kosher-friendly for Passover! My S/O’s birthday will occasionally fall right in the middle of it, and while I have a fool-proof recipe for him during that, sometimes it’s nice to shake things up. I’ll definitely be trying out this recipe! 😀
So excited your going to make it Angelina! Sounds like a fun time and I hope he enjoys it (: Thank you!
I want you to thank for your time of this wonderful read!!! I definately enjoy every little bit of it and I have you bookmarked to check out new stuff of your blog a must read blog!
Awh thank you! This is so sweet!
Can I substitute something else for coconut flakes?
Sure! Use an equal amount of nuts. Please. Let me know if you have questions. Hope you love this cake!
Wow, nice recipes. I want to try it. Thanks for sharing
Thank you Cara!
wow, the pancakes are amazing.
Made this for dessert last night. What an easy, no-bake recipe that looks and tastes fabulous!
Thank you Maureen!
Made it, really was disappointing. Love all the INGREDIENTS, but didn’t trip my trigger..
Hi Sharon! I am sorry to hear that! I hope you love some other recipes on my blog!
I made this for one of my daughters for her birthday cake as she had requested chocolate and I was trying to avoid refined sugar and flour. This was delicious, enjoyed by all. The ganache didn’t come out as smooth looking as yours did but tasted fine. Also, it didn’t run down the side of the cake but was completely set on the top as I had chilled it in the springform pan as the recipe says to do. We recently moved and the food processor is buried somewhere so I just used a sharp knife and a cutting board, then mixed up the crust in the Kitchenaid mixer. We will keep this recipe for future special occasions.
I am so glad this turned out amazing for you! Thank you so much for trying it! Also, Happy Birthday to your daughter! xTieghan
What can you substitute for the coconut I’m not a fan of the coconut flavour or texture?
Hey Morgan,
Try using extra walnuts in place of the coconut! I hope you love the recipe! Happy Holidays! xTieghan
I’m guna make this for my own birthday cake!!!
I hope you love the recipe Tara!! xTieghan
