Brown Butter Vanilla Bean and Nutella Swirled Rice Krispie Treats
Tis the season for browned butter.
Everyone can now do the happy dance!
No really, I am being serious. Do the happy dance, I promise it’ll make this Tuesday (that really feels like a Monday) a million times better.
So I accidentally have a line up of browned butter recipes for you guys.
I promise that it was not intentional and just happened, but I have to say that the timing is good. The month of September to me means the start of all things fall-like. Brown butter being one of those things. Although, I am pretty sure I managed to use some brown butter over the summer in this ice cream.
I made these bars for a certain now five-year old’s birthday.
The little cupcake, yeah that is what she has asked us to call her this month – in honor of her birthday. Next up, pumpkin (yep, you guessed it – Halloween), then on to “ornament” (I think you can figure that one out too). Over the summer it was butterfly. She is used to being adorned and she has her little names of endearment all figured out!
Anyway, Cupcake needed a treat to bring to school for her class. I racked my brain all week as to what I should make. Cupcakes, decorated sugar cookies, homemade doughnuts and pretty much every other dessert you can think of. I was highly considering the doughnuts, but I did that last year and I would have done some “cupcakes”, but then all of the sudden it was the day before her birthday. Time goes too fast!
You see, I’d had quite a day in the kitchen. Err, more like a morning, but gosh it felt like a whole twenty-four hours and by the end of the morning I smelled like one giant pot of caramelized onions. Yeah, those are coming your way soon. They are good.
But I have to say, my onion hating family was not all that pleased with the smell.
Lame.
Anyway, I was not even close to being done with my never-ending “To Do” list, I had to think and make quickly.
Rice Krispie Treats are every kid’s best friend. Marshmallows and butter. Nothing simpler, and in a kid’s mind nothing better. Of course until they meet these Rice Krispie treats and realize Rice Krispie treats actually can get better.
So much better.
Me being me, I could not just leave a recipe as is. Simple, original and classic.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the classics and am even a die-hard for them, but sometimes they are fun to mess with and we all know I really like messing with food.
Plus, I really wanted to make something Asher would love and the girl loves Nutella more than anything.
Ok, so the title is a little misleading.
These are not really swirled with Nutella. They are more liked stuffed, but originally I really wanted to try to create swirls.
Yeah, obviously that did not really work.
But the holes on the top layer of Rice Krispies that let the Nutella poke through sort of look like swirls and that is what I was going for. Oozing Nutella!
Typically I am not the biggest fan of using Nutella in dessert since I prefer straight chocolate, but in these it works.
And I honestly think every kid has a thing for Nutella. It’s weird.
Or maybe it is not. I never had Nutella growing up. Is that weird? Did everybody have Nutella growing up or is this Nutella craze a new thing?
Whatever, all I know is that everybody loved these. Kids, teachers, brothers – everyone. Extra bonus, they are EASY and the ingredient list is SHORT. Which if you guys have been reading for any amount of time, you know that is somewhat of a rare thing with me. While I generally cook easy and quick food, sometimes I can throw in a lot of spices, veggies, herbs and cheese. I get a little excited.
Sometimes, it’s a problem.
The only problem with these though is finding the will power to stop eating them.

Brown Butter Vanilla Bean and Nutella Swirled Rice Krispie Treats

Rice Krispie Treats are every kid's best friend. Marshmallows and butter. Nothing simpler, and in a kid's mind nothing better. Of course until they meet these Rice Krispie treats and realize Rice Krispie treats actually can get better.
Ingredients
- 1 cup butter 2 sticks
- 1 vanilla bean the seeds scraped
- 2 ounce bags mini marshmallows 10
- 8 1/2 cups rice krispies
- 1-1/2 cups nutella
Instructions
-
Grease two 9x13 inch pans.
-
In a large, heavy-bottomed pot add the butter and vanilla bean seeds, melt butter over medium heat until just browned. Butter will melt, foam, and froth, then begin to brown along the bottom. Whisk browned bits off of the bottom of the pan. Just as the butter begins to brown, add the marshmallows and turn off the heat. Stir the marshmallows around until completely melted, about five minutes. If the marshmallows are not fully melting turn the heat back on to low and stir until smooth and melted.
-
Add the Rice Krispies and coat them completely in marshmallows.
-
Press 2/3 of the mixture into the prepared 9×13 pans. Press the remaining mixture into the other 9x13 pan, it will not fully cover the entire pan. This is fine, you want those holes!
-
Now take the Nutella and spread it all over the full 9x13 inch pan (the one with 2/3 of the Rice Krispies).
-
The remaining un-full pan of Rice Krispies should be firm by now, pop it out of the pan and lay it over the layer of Nutella. Press down so some of the Nutella oozes through the cracks. Let sit for at least an hour at room temperature before slicing.
Good luck!
I love RKTreats and yes, I had Nutella growing up, 20 years ago. So it’s not a new thing, but let’s pretend it is and have it on everything we can 🙂 I make my RKTs with browned butter too – it’s the BEST. Except for what you did..adding Nutella! And that dip of yours on FG yesterday was killin’ it. Nice work 🙂
Thank you so much, Averie! I know you love RC so I hoping you would like these!!
Thanks so much for your kind words about that dip! I wish is did a little better on FG, but I have been having zero luck over there lately! ugh.
I’m so happy that brown butter season is almost here! That stuff is my favourite thing ever, I like it so much!
I never had nutella as a kid either, that must be why I can’t get enough of it now hmm! Anyway, these rice krispies look utterly awesome. Nutella and brown butter?? Now, that’s what I call perfection! x
Thanks Consuelo!
Love how sticky and gooey these look and those swirls of nutella just take them completely over the top!
Thank you so much, London!
I can only imagine how delicious this treat is!! Great post and photos, thanks for sharing!!
Thank you so much, Dan!
I rarely ever had Nutella as a kid growing up as well! I remember once being at a friend’s house and having a slice of wonder bread generously topped with it–total eye opening experience, haha. Needless to say, I’ve never had wonder bread again in my life.
Your sister and her friends must have loved these!!! So much fun.
Thank you, Laura!
I am not sure I have ever had wonder bread! LOL! That is probably weird, but my mom always bought the whole grain seedy breads or bagels and I LOVE both of those!
These look fantastic! I am sure these were a huge hit for the birthday festivities!!! (Love the nicknames chosen for the seasons – too cute!!!)
Thanks Roybn!! They were a hit!
Tis the season for these bad boys to get in my mouth!!
Haha! Yes, it it!
Nutella with rice krispie treats! Yum. I have a very bad obsession with Nutella.
Thanks Melanie! I think most people do!
These look yummy! I haven’t made Rice Krispie treats in awhile…I’ll have to get on that. No, I didn’t have Nutella when I was growing up, I discovered it when I was in Italy during grad school.
Thanks Kelly! Oh and Italy for grad school? That sounds amazing!
holy molly. these have me speechless. I love every piece of these!
Thank you so much, Alaina!
Totally doing the happy dance over these beauties.
Yes! I love the happy dance!
Woah!! That’s an amazing mouthful!
Thanks Rachel!
I think Nutella is a new craze. It seems so, anyway. I’m a way bigger fan of straight up chocolate myself, but these rice krispie treats look awesome!
I love browned butter and I never would have thought to put it in krispie treats. So creative! 🙂
Thanks Abbie!
“Tis the season for browned butter” – I could not agree more, it seems to be all I’m using these days. These are my kind of rice krispies and I love that Nutella swirl!
Thanks Laura!!
Oh my… these sound beyond delicious. I wish I could taste them right now!
Thanks so much, Aimee!
OMG these look so yummy! Your photography is amazing!
Thank you so much, Kelley!
I never had Nutella as a kid either! I buy it every so often for my kids because it disappears pretty quickly. I can wait to try these….I may just have to hide them from the kids! 🙂
Ha! Thanks Liz! Hope you guys love these!
I need these in my face, right now!!
Wish I could send you a pan! Thanks so much, Julie!
Yum! Love the combo of Rice Krispie and Nutella! I grew up with Nutella in Europe! I do make a healthier version though, by grinding roasted hazelnuts in the food processor, adding melted dark chocolate, and just a touch of sweetness, with honey or similar!
Hope Asher and her friends enjoyed them! How could they not!!
Oh wow! I love that you make your own homemade nutella! That sounds awesome!
Thanks so much, Louise!
Holy moly. These look amazing. I’m kind of at a loss for words.
Thank you, Kim!
I want to drink browned butter, so I’m on pins and needles. These are fabulous!
Thank you so much, Dorothy! I have been going a little brown butter crazy for some reason!
I want to live inside that thing!
Haha! That would be amazing!
Oooh I love the idea of placing one layer of Rice Krispies over the other! And that Nutella oozing out is GOLDEN. These are gorgeous and I bet they’re pretty damn delicious!
Thank you so much, Mimi! The Nutella oozing out is the best part!
Is there anything Nutella isn’t awesome with? And Rice Krispies.. don’t even get me started. They’re one of my favorites, and these treats would not have been possible if I lived with you as I am known to inhale the entire gooey bowl before you can say “grease the pan.”
Haha! Geez, your comments always make me smile. They are the best and so freaking truthful. I love it!!
Thanks Hayley! I would totally send you a giant pan it I could!
I never thought I’d say this, but I’m craving rice krispie treats!
Haha! I know what you mean! Plain rice krispie treats are not really my thing, but add some chocolate and they get a whole lot better!
Thanks Carrian!
These crisps contain all my favorite products, especially Nutella! They seem to be rather easy to cook and they look really delicious. And I`m sure that kids love it, so I will try to bake them for my sons!
Thanks Maria! Hope you guys love these!
I think these are calling to me!! Forget the kids, I want these for MY birthday! 😉
You need these for your Birthday!! Just make sure someone else makes them for you! 🙂
Hi! I’m from Saudi Arabia and I like this recipe so much, must try it soon. I have a question about the vanilla bean, what does the seeds taste like? Sorry this is my first time knowing that I can use the seeds of the vanilla bean. Thank you dear.
Hi Haifa!
The vanilla bean taste just like vanilla the flavor, but a bit more intense. If you like vanilla you will love the bean!!
Cant wait to try this recipe! Salted or un-salted butter?
I used salted, sorry I will add that to the recipe! 🙂
Hope you love these, Danielle!!
These were absolutely AMAZING! The browned butter adds a sophisticated flavor to the recipe. Great recipe – definitely going on the “recipes I will make again board”!
Yes! So happy you loved these!! Thanks Danielle!
Hi,
I was wondering if I add the vanilla bean AND vanilla extract. I may have overlooked a step, but I can’t seem to find where the extract goes!
Hey Jordan, you can add one or the other, not both. So just use whatever you prefer. Please let me know if you have questions. Thank you! 🙂
Delicious!!! Made with puffed kamut cereal and homemade Nutella ?. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thank you!
I see vanilla extract in the ingredients but not used in the recipe, where is this added?
Thanks!
Hi Noelle! So sorry, that is a typo. Recipe all fixed. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you! xTieghan
Is it 2 ounce bag of mini marshmallow or 2 10 ounce bags of marshmallow?
Hi Bora,
Sorry for the confusion, it is (2) 10 ounce bags. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
In the recipe do you mean 2 10-ounce bags of mini marshmallows?
Thanks!
Hey Noelle,
Yes, sorry for the confusion! I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! Happy Holidays! xTieghan
So sorry, saw my last question answered above. Thanks!
