It’s Friiddaayyy!! And today we’re talkin’ scrumptious brown butter scones!! 🙂
So hey! I am so happy and excited to be finishing up the week on high note! My week kind of started off in not the best way, but fortunately, it just got better and better each day. And I have a really great feeling that today is going to be the bestest of them all!
So how did your week go? Good, bad, somewhere in-between. I’m pretty sure no matter how your week went that we can all agree that we are glad it’s Friday! My week was jam-packed, as am I am juggling just a few things right now, but it was, all in all, a pretty good one. I love when I can end the week feeling like I got a ton accomplished, and all is good. Anyone else feel the same?
Plus, I’m super excited because I actually have a 4 day vacation coming up and it’s going to be so awesome. I am finally taking Asher to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter a week from Saturday. Literally we have been planning this trip for months… and pushing it back for months… BUT it’s finally happening, we are going!
So very excited.
But umm, you guys! I know we are just coming out of summer and I should be tan as ever and all, but I am beyond pasty. My legs look like they haven’t seen the sun in years (cause honestly they have not seen the sun since the last time I was in Florida, which was well over a year ago…totally serious right now). I am highly considering going the self tanner route. Any beauty experts out there want to recommend their favorite products?!? I would be so very grateful! 🙂
PS. Another reason I am beyond excited for this trip is because Asher doesn’t know that I am surprising her at the airport with two of her most favorite people! My brother Kai and his girlfriend Caitlin are flying in from LA and are going to surprise her at the airport. I am making Kai wear a Dumbledore costume and then he is going to give Asher, her official “Hogwarts Acceptance Letter“. YESS. I mean, I know it’s so dorky, but she’s going to freak out. Hoping all goes as planned!
Okok, so well I could probably talk about random life things all day today (so much to share for some reason!), but I’m not going to bore you guys to death, and will move on to talking about these scones!!
Plus, I’m planning a fun little post for Sunday where we can talk all things life. 🙂

Do you guys remember when I made these blackberry scones? Yeah, well before those scones I’d actually never made scones… nor eaten them either. I know, craziness! Anyway, I made those scones and fell in love, so I figured a buttery fall scones was something I just needed to do.
I mean obviously.
Enter these Brown Butter Maple Glazed Cinnamon Apple Scones!!! Really, all I can say is YUMMM.
…brown butter? toasty, golden, warm, buttery, perfection.
…maple? the perfect pairing with crisp fall apples.
…cinnamon? again, can you really do a baked apple treat without cinnamon? my thinking is no.
I know that I may not have had a whole lot of scones in my lifetime, but I’m declaring these a favorite, and for all the reasons listed above. They’re just beyond delicious. They’re the perfect treat to welcome in the first weekend of autumn!
Oh and also…these scones are really easy too! They take just under thirty minutes to make. And eating them hot, right outta the oven, drizzled with a generous amount of that brown butter glaze, and then sprinkled with just a little cinnamon sugar (you know, for good measure), well it’s kind of an out of this world experience!
Um yeah, literally it’s heaven. Perfect for breakfast, brunch, snack…and man, even dessert. Especially if you’re a fruity dessert lover. Can we all agree that our weekend is going to include these scones??! Hoping so! 🙂

Brown Butter Maple Glazed Cinnamon Apple Scones.

Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 8 tablespoons unsalted butter grated on a box grater just like cheese
- 1 egg
- 3/4 cup buttermilk + more for brushing
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 2 small or 1 large honeycrisp apples chopped
- cup cinnamon sugar for sprinkling (mix 1/4 sugar with 1 tablespoon cinnamon)
Glaze
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1/4 cup maple syrup
- 1/3 cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- pinch of flaky sea salt
Instructions

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.

In a mixing bowl, combine the flour sugar, baking powder, cinnamon and salt. Add the butter and toss with the flour. Add the egg, buttermilk and vanilla. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overmix. Fold in the chopped apples. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and then pat into a 1-inch-thick circle. Cut the dough into 8 wedges. Place pieces, about 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets. Brush each piece with buttermilk.

Bake until golden brown, 15 to 18 minutes, rotating sheets halfway through.

Meanwhile, make the glaze. Add the butter to saucepan. Allow the butter to brown lightly until it smells toasted, about 2-3 minutes. Stir often, butter will foam and then settle back down. Remove from the heat and whisk in the maple syrup, powdered sugar, vanilla and a pinch of salt.

Let the scones cool slightly and then drizzle with the maple glaze and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Serve warm and enjoy!

Yeah I wasn’t too crazy about scones as well because it seems like the ones I’ve had were too dry so I just started liking them when I first made it last month. Definitely will try this! Tieghan, you have the most amazing fall recipes! I’m soo in love with all your flavors! And these scones sound soo amazing. And oh my gosh, so obsessed with the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. I went for the first time to the one in Hollywood over Labor Day weekend, and it was just sooo incredible. Make sure to see it at night too! The atmosphere changes, I feel. And try the butterbeer frozen. Then come back and recreate it for us =)

I am so so pale too and have been trying different self tanners for years. My current go-to and favorite is the original St. Moriz. I think it works better than its more expensive competitors. Vita Liberata is also nice. Just be sure to buy the applicator mitt too if you try them- using bare hands is a mess!

I just made these and while the scones are great the glaze is awesome. I think that I just found my new favorite glaze for all kinds of baked goods. I make an applesauce cake that this would be fantastic over. I can’t wait to try it!

For fake tan I recommend the st tropez bronzing mouuse!! And get the glove that comes with it to apply it and make sure u exfoliate beforehand, you’ll be good to go 🙂

Made these for breakfast Sunday, and YUM. I love that the scones themselves aren’t too sweet, just perfectly spiced. They actually reminded me of apple pie…apples, obviously…sweet, gooey glaze…warm fall spices…buttery scone standing in for pie crust…you might have just tricked me into dessert for breakfast and I love love love it!
Actually ran out of maple syrup and ended up throwing in a little molasses, which suddenly somehow made me think of pumpkin-y things…something to look forward to on HBH, maybe?? 🙂

Made these last night and have to say they are delicious! A few questions / comments: before the scones cook, you say brush with buttermilk — should the recipe say “then sprinkle with cinnamon sugar”? I felt like that might have worked better. The glaze IS absolutely delicious, but wondering if it ever will set. I made the scones last night and the glaze this morning (to bring to work) and the glaze stayed rather liquidy. It didn’t matter for taste, but for presentation, they would have looked so nice if they glaze hardened.
Hey Jen!! So you can certainly sprinkle with cinnamon sugar on before baking, but I made it optional incase some might not want to use it. So I just sprinkled on after baking, before might be great though! As for the glaze, it will not harden, BUT if you would like it to, just add 1/4 cup more powdered sugar to stiffen it up a bit. I made these on Saturday and all I can say is wow! They are so quick, easy, and delish. The glaze didn’t really thicken like yours did but they were still incredibly tasty! My fiance devoured them. Can’t wait to make them again!

Just tried these… They’re delicious, but I think I did too much buttermilk over the tops since mine were definitely cooked through but didn’t get golden brown on top. Also, my glaze wasn’t nearly as opaque as the gorgeousness in the recipe photos (too much maple syrup?) I think the instruction of grating the butter was a great way to incorporate it, and I’m going to definitely use it in other situations, but my butter melted pretty quickly into clumps inside my grater while I was getting the rest mixed up. I should have let it sit in the freezer before grating. I guess I’ll have to try again! Yum hahaha. I posted my sort-of success on Instagram! I usually find scones to be too dry and crumbly, but these were just right.

I’ve been on an apple kick and want to bake everything with apples. Made these today and they are SO GOOD. I used 1 cup of whole wheat pastry flour and 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour. I brushed them with heavy cream and sprinkled them with the cinnamon sugar mixture prior to baking. I used an ice cream scoop to portion them into 10 mounds rather than patting them out and slicing them, that’s just how I prefer my scones. The icing is delicious!! My fiancé declared these are the best scones he’s ever had. They are definitely on my “to make again” list. Thanks for the lovely fall recipe!

Way to go, Tieghan! We lived in England for awhile and usually scone recipes are too fussy for me. These, however, are not only easy to make but PERFECT. Just made them for my family and extra kids who slept over and it got very quiet when everyone started eating. Will definitely make them again and again
Side note – I cut the baking powder in half for high-altitude (we are also in Colorado). I assumed you adjust your recipes for main-stream baking? It worked fine for me.

These scones were incredible! The maple brown butter glaze was the perfect addition. The apples gave a natural sweetness inside the scone and kept them from being too dry. Simple and quick to make, too. The only change I would make it to add the cinnamon sugar before baking while the scone is still dough, and to increase the amount of powdered sugar in the glaze (mine came out thin). Absolute new favorite recipe though, and my friends loved them!

These were delicious and I added grated cheddar cheese to mine as I wanted more protein for breakfast. I will be making these again. I made them in my Thermomix which makes them very easy and quick.

These were delicious! I love the suggestion to grate the butter into the dry ingredients – it is way easier than the normal “cutting it in” routine. Next time I’ll freeze the butter before shredding. Otherwise, the only thing I did differently was add about three times as much cinnamon and put the scones in the freezer for about 10 minutes prior to baking in order to firm up the butter! The scones were so moist and soft, and the glaze was a perfect compliment. Will make again!

I just made these last night with the apples I picked from my local orchard! The only variation I made was I used whatever apples I had, I think one was Granny Smith and the other was pink lady. Anyways, so delicious! I think next time I am going to use the glaze from the apple fritter recipe (vanilla coffee glaze) on the scones to give me an extra pick me up in the mornings!

I just went apple picking and have since been trying to get creative with all the apples I have! Made this recipe today and WOW. It was surprisingly simple and scones turned out sooo moist. The glaze is all kinds of brown butter-toffee-flavored goodness. 10/10 would recommend.

This is tough because the flavor was delicious, but the recipe is problematic. The texture is all wrong for scones – cakey and fluffy, not flaky and buttery. Ultimately I would guess it needs about twice as much butter. The glaze also was not thick enough and slid right off the scone. Unfortunately it was the best part, and most of it ended up on the sheet below the scones. The flavor is so good and we enjoyed them, but I was disappointed it was not a scone like I was craving.

So, I absolutely LOVE these scones. I’ve made them twice this week already and my whole group of girlfriends and my husband cannot get enough. I also made my own clotted cream to go with them. These scones not only have WONDERFUL flavor but are also so moist, where most scones seem to be soooo dry. Tieghan, what makes these scones so moist? I’ve been wanting to make these scones for a while now. But I was unsure of how they would be substituting GF flour for regular. They are absolutely amazing. Best scones I’ve ever made! I used King Arthur’s GF 1:1 flour. I also used salted butter because it’s all I buy. Thank you for working so hard to perfect your recipes, this one is a winner and new family fav!
