Peanut Butter Burgers with Slim Jim Fries and Chocolate Malted Milkshake.
Also known as the peanutburger.
What’s a peanutburger you ask?
Well, if you live on the west side of Cleveland, Ohio than you probably already know the answer to this one. But for those of you from any other part of the world, let me tell you. Bearden’s is a diner style restaurant straight out of the 50’s. Ok, well technically it was started in the 40’s but it looks like it’s from the 50’s.
Anyway they serve exactly what you would think they serve. Burgers, chicken fingers, hot dogs, onion rings, fries and milkshakes. Alright, and they serve some salads, but no one goes there for the salads. Let’s just say it is not a restaurant for vegetarians, unless of course your are ok with eating you weight in onion rings. Which actually might not sound all that bad to some. Me?
I don’t know.
I have never had one….
Nope, I have never had an onion ring. Is that weird?
My parents are not big onion people or at least they thought they weren’t onion people. Trust me they are, they just don’t know it. Anyway, we never got the onion rings and since I have never had them I have never had the urge to try them anywhere else. I am thinking this maybe needs to change though, I hear they are good.
Wait, I am getting off topic. I can not do that today.
Today I have not one, not two, but three recipes. Burgers, fries and a milkshake. Cause honestly they just go together and I can not split them up. That would be just plain wrong. And mean.
My mom and dad grew up eating peanutburgers during their lunch break at school. Yeah, can you believe that, they had a whole hour and a half to go home, or wherever, for lunch. So since Bearden’s was across the street from their school that’s where they went (not together back then, that didn’t happen until high school) for a treat. I guess Bearden’s used to be the “cool” place to go back in the day as well. My grandma actually used to go there on Friday and Saturday nights when she was in high school in the late 50’s. The waitresses used to serve your food on roller skates. No seriously. If you were getting your food to go or just eating in your car the waitresses would roll your order out to you on skates and then attach a tray full of food right onto your car door/window.
Which makes me think of National Lampoon’s Vacation when the waitress brings them their food and their window shatters. Yeah, for some odd reason I love that movie. And for me that is really odd because I do not normally like comedies. Typically I am all about the dramas, love stories and a little action mixed in, but mostly I am really into the dramas and happy ending movies.
Really though, why do waitress not do this anymore? Um, hello? Roller skates! That is awesome!
Sorry, sometimes I act like I am five again and sometimes I secretly wish I was.
Ah wait, that’s not a secret. I totally wish I was five and care free again.
Alrighty then, back to the burgers.
They are maybe the weirdest sounding burger around, but trust me they are so good. Peanut butter slathered on a burger is amazing. So amazing it does not even need cheese, or even the bacon that you see sitting on top in a few of the photos! And that is coming from a “everything is better with cheese” person. Typically when we used to get Bearden’s we would just get the peanutburger with no other toppings, but since I have started writing this little blog I have discovered that venturing out of my food comfort zone can equal delicious things.
Now personally my family still loves these burgers straight up. Just plain peanut butter and nothing else, but we are boring and typical. So if you thinking you want some cheese go for it, cheddar is delicious with the peanut butter and burger. And the bacon, well for some that is probably just a no brainer. Either you love bacon or hate it. It is a personal preference thing.
If you love it go for it and if you are a true peanut butter lover just do the peanutburger straight up. Bun, burger, peanut butter, bun. Done.
You can’t go to Bearden’s without getting the the Slim Jim Fries. You just can’t, they’re too good. They are slim, crispy and salty.
Everything a fry should be and what every burger needs sitting right beside it.
My slim jim fries are a little different though. I baked them, cause ya all know I hate frying. Promise they are just as good.
Your burger and fries? Yeah, they are still not complete. They absolutely, no questions asked, need to be washed down with a chocolate shake. Really, it’s not up for discussion.
Just do it.
It’s malted and it’s good and it is what your peanutburger and slim jim fries need. Plus, I might have a mental break down if I knew you ate this meal without shake.
So just give your peanutburger the full Bearden’s tribute and wash it down with an icy malted milkshake and slim jim fries. Your burger will never be the same again.

They are maybe the weirdest sounding burger around, but trust me they are so good. Peanut butter slathered on a burger is amazing.
Ingredients
Burgers
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon pepper
- 3/4 cup creamy peanut butter
- 4 ounces sharp cheddar cheese sliced (optional)
- 8 slices cooked bacon (optional)
- 4 whole wheat buns toasted
Slim Jim Fries
Chocolate Malted Milkshake
- 4 cups chocolate ice cream
- 3/4 - 1 cup milk
- 1/2 cup chocolate malt powder
- 1 tablespoon vanilla
- whipped cream and hot fuge sauce for topping
Instructions
-
Pre-heat the oven to 425°F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper and place a wire rack on top. Spray the rack with nonstick spray.
-
Add ground beef to a large bowl and season with salt and pepper, then let sit at room temperature while you work on the fries. Preheat the grill to medium-high heat.
-
Cut each potato into very thin fries, lengthwise no more than a quarter-inch thick. In a large bowl, toss the fries with olive oil. I think I used about 2 tablespoons. Add the seasoned salt and pepper and arrange the fries in single layer without crowding them on the wire racks (this is very important - I used two baking sheets).
-
Bake for 20 minutes, remove and toss, then bake for 15-20 minutes longer. I like to start checking them at 15 minutes and make sure none are burning or getting too crisp.
-
About 15 to 20 minutes before the fries are ready form the beef into 4 equal patties and grill (or you can fry them in a skillet as well) until they reach their desired doneness. I cook mine about 4 minutes per side, but it will depend on how thick you like your burgers. In the last 1-2 minutes of cooking, top each burger with a few slices of cheddar cheese if desired (I do not do this for our peanut burgers, but some people love it!). Remove from the grill and cover with foill to keep warm while you make the milkshakes.
-
In a blender, combine the ice cream, malted milk powder and vanilla. Add the milk, a quarter cup at a time, blending between each addition, until the desired consistency is reached. Divide between four glasses and top with generous amounts of whipped cream and hot fudge sauce.
-
To assemble burgers warm the peanut butter in the microwave for 30 seconds. Place the burger on its bun and spread a generous amount of the warmed peanut butter on top of the burger. Top with 2 slices of bacon if desired and add the burger bun.
-
Serve the burgers with a side of slim jim fries and the milkshakes! Dig in!
Oh and yes, you should make these for Memorial day.
I’m allergic to nuts, but I’ll definitely make the fries and milkshake! Great pictures!
Ah man! Bummer, but eat least you can make a cheeseburger and still eat the fries and shake!
Thanks Nessa!
I’m allergic to nuts too. I hear that the peanut butter acts like cheese. I would sub some soy nut butter on a burger in a heartbeat. Maybe.
WOW! I’ve never heard of a “peanutburger”! I’m so intrigued 😉 Everything about this meal looks delicious!! Pinned! Thanks for sharing :*)
Thanks Brenda! Hope you love this and thanks so much for pinning!
I’m so intrigued by this! Everything sounds delicious!
I’ve had a peanut butter burger with jalapenos in Texas before. Lovely 😉
Jalapenos! That sounds so awesome! I need to come live in Texas. You guys no how to eat!
If you’ve never had an onion ring, don’t start now, delicious and fattening!
I’ve never heard of a peanut butter burger, but it doesn’t seem weird to me at all, only tasty!
Ha! That’s not stopping me!
Thanks Kari! Hope you give these odd burgers a try!
I’ve never heard of a peanut butter burger, but I would love to try one – especially if it was served with fries and a milkshake! Yum, love diner food 🙂
I think you would love it Tracey! Plus, the fries and shake do make it 100x better!! Thanks Tracey!
I’ve never heard of a peanut butter burger either, but I bet my husband would love this (he is a peanut butter fanatic).
Any peanut butter love will love these! Thanks Eva!
Okay, this sounds as strange as avocado dessert, but if I like those, I’ll have to try this. 🙂 Love your photos!
Ha! I know, but if you love peanut butter you will love this burger! Thanks Dorothy!
This sounds & looks incredible! Found you over at High Heels & Grill linky!
Thank you so much Amber and thanks for clicking over!
I have never heard of this! Wow – I’m sure it is awesome. And I just want to say – your house is like the best restaurant I can imagine for a family. Kudos to you! : )
Ha! Thank you Monica!! You are too nice!!
NO WAY! Peanut butter burgers are a thing?? I’ve been missing out!! I could put peanut butter on just about anything, so why not a burger? That shake? YUM…bacon? YUM!
Yes way!!! You gotta do it Julia, you will love it!
Peanut goes so well in burgers especially with bacon! I generally like to go with a Thai style spicy peanut sauce in mine.
I love doing spicy thai peanut sauce on burgers! I actually have a thai salmon burger on my site with peanut butter that is so good!
Thanks Kevin! Oh and I love your Buffalo chicken burger you posted today!! So good looking!
Holy cow, what a fantastic idea! Definitely bookmarking these recipes and giving them a try 🙂
Happy Blogging!
Happy Valley Chow
Thank you!
This is definitely one of the most unique burgers I have seen! Must try those fries!
I know, but promise it is good! Thanks Nancy!
Yes, yes, and more yeses. I NEED this, Tieghan! I am all about adventurous burgers and one with peanut butter slathered on top sounds right up my alley. Of course, I would probably add the bacon and cheese because I am a firm believer in the “more is more” theory 🙂 and those fries! And the shake! This couldn’t be more perfect.
Hehe! I like your theory!! Thanks so much Hayley! You are awesome!
I am 110% believer in the magical powers of Peanut butter on burgers. It’s amazing! And I want it BAD!
YA!! I have a believer!! This is just awesome!
Thanks Megan!
I love everything about this meal!! OMG! Do you deliver?
Ha! Nope, but you can come and visit whenever!!
Thanks Lauren!
I think America is one of the few contries that uses peanutbutter in sweet dishes more than in savory, most places peanutbutter is just a savory ingredient. I love this idea! And those fries look insanly good.
Really?? We need to change that! I mean peanut is too good to use only in sweet things!!
Thanks so much Jackie!
I’m originally from Erie, PA and even lived in Cleveland for a year – how have I never heard of peanutburgers before?! I must say, I’m intrigued! Though I’m a vegetarian, I bet the peanut butter would still taste amazing on a veggie burger, and my meat-eating husband would looooove the real one, I’m sure! Will have to give a try – thanks for sharing!
I bet it would be awesome on a veggie burger!! I think I need to try that actually! Hope you guys love it!
Thanks Trisha!
This looks like the perfect meal when you’re really hungry! Love the added peanut butter in the burgers! Amazing 🙂
Thanks Liz!!
I can’t believe I’m saying this but MAN, that looks really good! Who woulda thunk? 🙂
Ha! I know, it is crazy, but it is so good!!
Thanks Gwen!
Haha! What a crazy and incredibly delish looking combination – I want one of those beasts of a burgers, and bad! Love hometown favorites like this. The tiny town where I grew up has something called “pub chips”… like fries but round and pillowy-soft. Still make me all googly-eyed to this day!
Hometwon favorites are the best and gosh those pub chips sound awesome!!!
Thanks Georgia!
I’m drooling over here! I’m a total peanut butter lover, and while this sounds so weird, it’s weird in a totally delicious way. And those fries and shake?! Oh man, I need to visit Cleveland…or just make this all myself, ASAP!
Hehe! Than Rachel! Hope you love them!
Now, that is interesting – I’ve never heard of a peanut butter burger – love that idea as an alternative to cheese and bacon.
Thanks Jeanette! Hope you give it a try!
holy peanut butter gods..this looks ridiculously amazing!! I’ve never heard of this but i’m so freaking intrigued because of what it’s loaded with!! loveeee!
Ha! Thank you Julie! It truly is an amazing burger. I swear it changers lives this one! LOL
I am simply in awe of your blog and your just 15? I will definitely be trying some of your recipes … I’m truly impressed and the couple that I’ve read sound amazing! Your photos are expert quality too … what type lens do you use if you don’t mind my asking (I’m a photography addict)?
I will certainly be recommending your blog to friends. Oh and by the way … I could be your Mom lol (just so you know this isn’t coming from a young person … well I ain’t old either lol) You go girl!!!
Wow! Thank you Debbie, but I am actually 19. Wish I was still 15 though!
I use a 50mm lens for most of my food photos and I really love it!
Hoe you love the recipes you try and thank you so much for all you kinds words!! You are too nice I am so happy and excited to have you as a reader!
Okay…Cleveland was not on my list of places to visit but if they are going to think like this I may have to check it out. I know some peanut butter lovers (myself included) that are going to love trying this! Thanks for sharing.
ha! Thank you!
Uh, I have never thought of having peanut butter in my burger. Never. Now I am SO curious, cuz I love my peanut butter, but with beef? You will never cease to impress me Tieghan. And that milkshake sounds so good right now. Ice cream is always good, right? Oh, and onion rings are really good every once in a while. Too often, too much:)
Yes, ice cream is always good!! Thanks for yet another kind comment Mary!!
Just wanted to take a second to tell you that your pictures are amazing! Your recipes as well, but your pictures really set the hook.
Also, I had my first peanut butter burger when I was visiting my husband at Keesler AFB in Mississippi. It was amazing! Everyone I tell about it in the Pacific Northwest is more then a bit skeptical. All I have to say is that if you are a little hesitant …just go for it.
I agree! Just go for it, you will not regret it!
Thank you, Alee!
Tieghan, I’m glad you left a comment on my blog, because it led me to yours:) I would definitely love this trio of yumminess for a meal:) I have had a peanut butter burger before ONCE, at a place called Hamburger Henry’s. I think the place is gone now, but it was on Belmont Shore in Long Beach, CA. and was there for decades. Thanks for conjuring up a fun memory.
Your photos are phenomenal!
Yay!! Thank you so much Sue for coming over! I am so excited to see you comment and so happy this burger brought back so fun memories! It has the same affect on me! LOL
Although I wish I had eaten it in Long Beach and not Rocky River, OH!
Thanks so much Sue!
Peanutburger – I love it! What a creative burger idea!
Thank you, Deborah!
YUM! I wanted to let you know that I am featuring this deliciousness on Saturday in my “What I Boookmarked This Week” post – stop by and see!
Thank you so much Danielle!
That diner sounds SO fun Tieghan!! And what? peanut butter on a burger? my fiance would LOVE that! I don’t eat much red meat, so I’d totally slather PB on a turkey burger now that I know it’s acceptable to do so. and PS: You need to try onion rings!
Hehe! Thank you, Sally! I actually don’t typically eat too much red meat either, but I had to keep this one traditional!! I bet it would still be awesome on a turkey burger though!
This.looks.amazing! I could lick my screen right now, but I won’t. Because that would just be wrong, right? Thanks for sharing these amazingly yummy looking recipes!
LOL! thank you Jocelyn!
Followed your link from the Whipperberry linky party, this looks delicious, I will have to give it a try soon.
Thank you so much for stopping by! Hope you love these!
Hmm… straight up peanut butter? Interesting.
The fries? Gotta try!
The onion rings? DO IT!! Growing up I never liked them – then I tried them and only ate the batter (onion taste), now? LOVE THEM! Do it…Do it…
Thanks for the ideas – Carrie
Haha! I wil, will. You have convinced me!
Thanks Carrie!
This. Looks. Amazing. Peanut butter truly does improve everything! 🙂
I agree! Thank you, Joy!
This is so different that I may have to try it! I have been known to eat peanut butter on crackers with onion and ketchup and bacon….try it, delish! Visiting from Marvelous Mondays and following you via Pinterest!
Whoa! Now that sounds crazy, but I think I do need to try it! LOL!
Thank so much for clicking over and now following me on pinterest!
Holy crap! never in my life did I think I would crave a burger covered in peanut butter. I spent 4 years in Colmbus and never heard of a peanut butter burger. I’ve been missing out!
h you have been missing out! Peanutburgers rule!!
Thanks Erin!
WHOA! When I lived in KC there was a drive in that had something very similar to this on the way down to the Lake of the Ozarks. You brought me back. Looks great!
Thank you!
What a classic meal! I grew up dipping my fries in milkshakes. And the burger – brilliant! I had an “Elvis” burger a couple years ago in Nashville and sometimes CRAVE that combination!
Thank you Cassie!
An Elvis Burger?? Now that sounds crazy awesome! I need to get myself to Nashville!
A local dive restaurant serves peanut butter burgers and they are beyond amazing. Yours looks right up there with them, that I will be making them tonight! thank you SO much for this recipe!
Oh yum!! I wish I had these for dinner. I hope you love them!!
I was a bit worried about putting peanut butter on a burger, but I’m glad I did. The sweet peanut butter and the salty bacon created an OMG burger. Thanks so much for the great idea!
Oh yeah!! So glad you loved this!! It is the best burger!
Thank you for posting this! Tomfooleries has peanut butter bacon burgers on their menu, and I get it almost every time I go there. The people with me usually end up making fun of me for liking it, but it’s just so good!
Ha! I say they are weird for not trying it! 🙂
Thanks Sammi!
I put PB on my fried eggs, but I never thought of this heavenly combo. Thanks for the idea! Great photos. Pinned!
Oh my gosh, that would be so good!! Hope you love this!
I literally did a double-take when I saw this on Pinterest. Looks so freakin’ good! I have never heard of putting a peanut butter sauce on a burger and I am really intrigued! Thanks for sharing this!!
And who doesn’t love ‘National Lampoon’s Vacation’? My husband and I argue over which is better: ‘Vacation’ or ‘Christmas Vacation’!
Nancy at Hungry Enough To Eat Six
I think I am a Christmas Vacation Girl! 🙂
Thanks Nancy!

You should have an email in your inbox now. Just confirm you want to be added to the list. Let me know if there are any issues. Thanks!!
I’m obsessed! Have made it a million times and will be doing so today as well…Absolutely delicious, all of it, and yes, don’t skip the shake or fries! Bonus tip: Dig into that warmed peanut butter and have extra on certain bites of the burger before devouring it- Yummmmmmm. Thanks Tieghan!!!❤️
I am so glad you loved this!! Thank you Gia!
The original peanut burger from Beardens had a “works sauce” which consisted of ketchup, mustard and relish. I always added onion and pickle. I actually confirmed the sauce with Joe Orange-original owner. Living 4 houses from Beardens it was my go to meal for 50 years. Slim Jim fries and a shake made it complete. Tell your dad I said hello!
I completely agree! Beardens was such a great spot to grow up around. I will tell my dad you did! I am sure he will be excited you commented! xTieghan
Our 1st date was at Bearden’s on Riverside Dr 3/17/56! They were giving Elvis Presley pix. We later in ’56 saw him in concert at the old arena. I have had a craving for their burger and malts and found this. Thanks for posting
Aw that is so amazing! I hope you try this Sandy, and it brings back those special memories! Thank you for sharing! xTieghan
This may be okay but recently I came up with a cheeseburger utilizing beef, white sharp cheddar cheese, a couple slices of raw onion, peanut butter, and air fried banana slices; the result is amazing and has become a staple food in our home. There is no need to leave the banana off of the burger.
Hey Devon,
Sorry you did not enjoy the recipe Devon. Let me know if I can help in anyway! xTieghan
