One Skillet Creamy Sun-Dried Tomato Chicken and Orzo.
This One Skillet Creamy Sun-Dried Tomato Chicken and Orzo is the perfect winter dinner…quick, easy, hearty, and delicious! Pan-seared Italian seasoned chicken breasts in a creamy sun-dried tomato and spinach sauce. Cooked together with orzo pasta for a complete dinner made in just ONE skillet. Truly one of those all-in-one dinners that everyone at the table will love. Great for a weeknight, but equally fancy enough to serve up at your next holiday dinner. You can’t go wrong with this warming skillet dinner.

It’s hard to believe that we’re entering the second week of December and are only just two and half weeks out from Christmas…and only three and half weeks from the New Year. Where is the time going!?
As I type this up I’m getting ready to take-off for NYC. By the time you all read this, I will be in the city. I have to say, I’m really excited for this trip, but equally excited to return home on Thursday, and finally be HOME for the remainder of the year. I know many of you travel for work weekly, but as you all know, I’m such a homebody at heart. So I’m excited to have some time to enjoy the remainder of December with my family. Anyone else in the same mindset?
With that in mind, I’m always looking for the easiest recipes this time of year. The days are incredibly short and things are busy between work and holiday prep. Quick and simple dinners that everyone at the dinner table will eat are what I strive to create.
Enter this skillet creamy sun-dried tomato chicken and orzo.

To make this all-in-one dinner…
Start with a skillet. I love using a cast iron skillet, but any oven-safe skillet or even dutch oven works great. You’ll want to season the chicken up with a few dried herbs and spices…oregano, paprika, and just a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes. Then sear the chicken until it’s golden.
PS. if you don’t have a cast iron skillet, check out the current Staub giveaway we’re hosting on Instagram!
Next up, remove the chicken from the skillet, add a bit of butter, plus some shallots, garlic, and orzo. I love toasting the dry orzo pasta in butter for additional flavor. The butter browns and the orzo takes on a delicious nutty flavor.
Moving along, add a splash of white wine. Then add pretty much everything else. Cream, a little parmesan cheese, fresh spinach and of course sun-dried tomatoes. Slide the chicken right into the sauce, then transfer the whole skillet right to the oven. Bake for about ten to fifteen minutes…
And then? Dinner is done. Yes, this is that SIMPLE.

So how does it taste?
I know simple skillet dinners can get a bad rap for being boring, but this is anything but boring. The sauce is creamy, hinted with lemon, garlic, and just a touch buttery too. The orzo is perfectly cooked and has a little nutty flavor.
And the chicken has a wonderful herbed flavor with a bit of heat from the crushed red pepper. It’s everything you’d expect out of a multi-step recipe, but made all in one skillet…and all SO GOOD.
What I love most about this recipe is the fact that it’s a complete dinner all-in-one. You have your protein, your carbs, and even your vegetables. I can serve this up on busy weeknights, but it’s equally great for holiday dinners with friends and family. I’ll be remaking this as soon as I get home. My family members are slowly starting to make their way back to Colorado for Christmas, so this is going to be on repeat.

One Skillet Creamy Sun-Dried Tomato Chicken and Orzo.
Key Ingredient: chicken
The perfect winter dinner...quick, easy, hearty, and delicious...a cherished all-in-one dinner!
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts or small thighs
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/4-1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
- kosher salt and black pepper
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 medium shallot, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced or grated
- 1 cup dry orzo pasta
- 1/3 cup dry white wine, such as Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
- 1/3 cup grated parmesan cheese
- 2 cups fresh baby spinach
- 1/2 cup oil packed sun-dried tomatoes, oil drained
- juice of 1 lemon
- fresh rosemary, for serving (optional)
Instructions
-
1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
2. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large oven-safe skillet set over medium-high heat. Rub the chicken with 1 tablespoon olive oil, the oregano, paprika, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. When the oil is shimmering, add the chicken. Sear on both sides until golden, about 3-5 minutes per side. Remove the chicken from the skillet.
3. To the same skillet, add the butter and shallot, cooking until fragrant, about 3 minutes. Add the garlic and orzo, cooking until lightly golden, 2-3 minutes. Add the wine and de-glaze the pan. Add 1 1/2 cups water. Bring to a boil, cook 3-5 minutes, then add the cream, mustard, parmesan, spinach, and sun-dried tomatoes, stirring until the spinach has wilted. Slide the chicken and any juices left on the plate back into the skillet. Transfer to the oven and cook, uncovered for 10-15 minutes, until the chicken is cooked through.
4. Serve the chicken topped with lemon juice and rosemary, if desired.

Hi There. Just to be sure…..are the chicken breasts/thighs skin on and bone in ??? My kind of recipe.
Thank you so much.
Yvonne Adams
HI! I like to use boneless chicken, but please feel free to use bone in. Just make sure to cook the chicken longer as using bone in chicken will require additional cooking time. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you and happy holidays! xTieghan
This looks so amazing and I have almost all of the ingredients so I may try to make this tonight!! Would subbing heavy cream with full fat canned coconut milk work? Or would the flavor be weird? Thanks!!
HI! Canned coconut milk will delicious. I use it often too! Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you and happy holidays! xTieghan
Hi!! This recipe looks amazing, and I have just about all of the ingredients so I’m hoping to make this tonight! Would subbing the heavy cream with full fat canned coconut milk work as a non-dairy alternative? Or would you suggest something else?
Canned coconut will be great! Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you and happy holidays! xTieghan
What would be a good gluten free substitution for the orzo, risotto?
Hi!! Yes, I would recommend using gluten free orzo OR using risotto rice, but be sure to adjust the cooking time as rice will take longer. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you and happy holidays! xTieghan
Looking forward to making this one. I love ?a skillet dinner such as this. Perfect for any night.
Thank you Joyce! I am so glad this turned out so well for you! xTieghan

I hope you do! Thank you so much Paige! xTieghan
Looks so good! Would this be possible in an Instapot (you have converted me to this amazing device)?
HI! I have not tested this for the instant pot, so it is hard to give you any accurate cooking times or methods. It could be great, but I am just not sure. If you try, just follow this recipe and cook for high pressure 8 minutes after adding the liquid. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you and happy holidays! xTieghan
Made for dinner tonight! Thumbs up!
Thank you Donna! So glad to hear that! xTieghan
I just made this for dinner for my husband and myself , we thought it was fabulous! He is very hard to please.Wonderful cold night dinner!
I am so glad you both enjoyed this Vicki! Thank you so much for trying it! xTieghan
My family loved this recipe!! It was delicious and came together quickly. I didn’t have white wine so I used chicken stock and I added half the sun-dried tomato with the stock–I was nervous that they wouldn’t be soft enough for my 12 year old. I also used about two pounds of both thighs and white. Super delicious!! Thank you for always sharing your wonderful recipes and making me look good!!!
That is so amazing to hear! Thank you so much for trying this Jacque! xTieghan
What would the timing be to make with rice instead of orzo?
HI! Rice takes about 15 additional minutes and I would add at least 1 cup water. I have not test this with rice, so it’s hard to give exact times and measure, but this is my best guess. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you and happy holidays! xTieghan
I made the sun dried tomato chicken orzo skillet dish tonight. My husband does not eat dairy so I swapped out the heavy cream for one cup of cashew milk. It was still creamy and no hint of cashew flavor. My husband loved it!
That is so great! Thank you Nancy! xTieghan
Made this for dinner tonight. It was delicious. Subbed fat free half/half to lighten the fat.
Thank you Andrew! I am glad you enjoyed this one! xTieghan
I made this last night and it was so delicious! I haavd been trying recipe after recipe on other websites on the internet and have always been disappointed but this recipe hit is out of the park. Bone in or boneless chicken?
I Use boneless. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you and happy holidays! xTieghan
Made this tonight – fantastic – it’s 15 degrees in Nebraska so it hit the spot! We will be back to Potato Chip Chicken when the kids come home from college (it’s been in heavy rotation since your first cookbook came out).
A warm “hello” to your Mom & Dad.
Ahh that is definitely on rotation when my brothers come home as well haha! I am so glad you enjoyed this recipe Victoria! xTieghan
This was so good! My son took a bite and all he could say was mmmm…… mmmm……. mmmm…… It was so creamy and such a wonderful flavor. Thank you!
Thank you so much Sue! I am so glad this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
Wow this recipe was delicious!! I made it for my roommates and everyone loved it. So easy to make too!!
I am so happy to hear that it turned out so well for you Caroline! Thank you so much!! xTieghan
I tried to sub quinoa for the orzo to make gluten-free but i wish I had tried risotto instead.
Hi Katie! Are there any questions I could help you with? I would love to help! xTieghan
It would help tremendously if when you specify chicken in your recipes if you indicated the type–bone in, skin on, boneless, skinless, etc. I am looking at pictures and it looks like skin on, which I believe makes the chicken more moist. Bones? I’ll ‘wing’ it. ?
Haha I will try to remember to specify! Thank you so much Sharon! xTieghan
I made this last night and it was a-mazing.
Only one suggestion on the recipe is to turn down the heat before adding the shallots mine got crispy super quick I knew better but was following the recipe so closely. Duh on my part. Sooo good though.
Thank you so much Mary Anne! I am so glad this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
Made this last night and loved it!! It tasted great and was so quick/easy to make!! I’m looking forward to the leftovers for dinner tonight.
I love that! Thank you so much Steph! xTieghan
First, there was no mention of Parmesan cheese in the ingredients so I didn’t put it in….STILL my husband told me this was a restaurant quality dish! Yesssss! The prep was longer than 15 minutes or maybe I am just slower cause I’m over 60… and I used boneless, skinless chicken thighs…. my favorite go to chicken meat, I used 3 C of spinach and next time will definitely increase that amount as we love spinach and it cooks down so well. The combination of flavors and textures is incredible and makes for a very enjoyable eating experience! Thank you for this recipe and it’s also a great way to use up ingredients you have in the refrigerator and pantry, or that is what inspired me…..I had cream and orzo, and sun dried tomatoes and the rest were staples in my kitchen so there was dinner! Happy Holidays!
I am so glad this still turned out so amazing for you Karen!! Thank you so much for trying it! Happy Holidays to you and your family as well! xTieghan
I made this tonight for dinner, subbing chopped red bell pepper for the tomatoes and half a box of rotini I had in the cupboard for the orzo. Loved it! So tasty:)
Thank you Lauren! I am really glad this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
I made this with risotto tonight (wanted to keep it GF) and it’s SO good! I added a little more liquid for the risotto because it usually needs a 1:3 ratio. Delicious!!
I am so glad this turned out so well for you Ashlee! Thank you! xTieghan
Hi Tieghan! I made this recipe last night and it turned out delicious. I made it with split breasts which I removed from the bone before cooking. The only thing I will do differently next time is add maybe another half cup of orzo (and adjust liquid accordingly) because it was the star of the dish (do not skip the toasting step!!!) and my teenagers were jamming on it so much there was chicken left over but no orzo. Thanks for a great and easy recipe – more one skillets please!
YES! I am so glad you loved this! Thank you Angela!! xTieghan
Made this last night. What a great recipe. Turned out totally delicious.
Thank you so much Bruce! I am so glad you loved this! xTieghan
Superb. Wonderful flavors. Another HBH recipe that will appear regularly on our table. Thanks.
That is so amazing to hear! Thank you David! xTieghan
Made this for dinner the other night. Delicious!!!
Love all your recipes and made several of them, although this is my first time commenting.
Thank you for always coming through with tasty dishes that leave us totally satisfied and inspire me to continue to cook!
Thank you Alex! I am so glad you loved this recipe so much!! xTieghan
You did it again! Another recipe my family said is a KEEPER and want repeats! Made this last night for dinner – just delicious. I increased it to 8 chicken thighs, and upped the amount of orzo, liquids and spices, just a bit (we like full flavor!)
Just a delicious meal. Thinking it would taste really good with coconut milk next time, instead of cream. Add a touch of sweetness, and maybe add a little more heat.
Of course… as I was making this, almost made a huge mistake. After sautéing the shallots in butter, I went straight to adding in the wine and water… forgetting to put in the ORZO & Garlic! HA! So I poured all the liquid from my skillet into a large measuring glass, then added in the orzo and garlic to the shallots. Maybe gave it some extra flavor! Then added the liquid back in and proceeded.. (and no one suspected a thing).
Thanks again!
haha I am glad it still worked out amazing for you David! Thank you for trying this! xTieghan
Made this tonight while home solo with my two year old. It was quick enough to throw together during an episode of Mickey Mouse Club House and was super yummy. Taunted my husband with photos of the finished meal and he can’t wait for the leftovers! My two year old enjoyed this dish as well! Thanks for sharing!
That is so great! Thank you so much Bethany! xTieghan
Amazing recipe. Husband raved!
That is the best! Thank you Sheryl! xTieghan
would you please answer the question bone in breasts or thighs$ thank you
Hi Donna, I like to use boneless, skinless chicken breasts or small thighs. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you and happy holidays! xTieghan
HI! I use boneless, skinless chicken breast. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you and happy holidays! xTieghan
SO good! It was a cold rainy day and this popped up on my Instagram feed and I knew it would be perfect for a warm cozy dinner. I’ll definitely be adding this one to my recipe book!
Thank you!! I am so glad you enjoyed this Cait! xTieghan
Recipe states, boneless and skinless.
This was good. I had sour cream in the house and used that but was probably not the best replacement for cream. Can you lll I use coconut milk? I think it could have used more sundried tomatoes and next time I was thinking of adding artichoke hearts. What is your thought on that?
HI! Yes, coconut milk works really well. Love the sound of more tomatoes and artichoke hearts. I would add the artichokes with the tomatoes. Yum!! Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you and happy holidays! xTieghan
Delicious and always love a one-dish meal! This recipe is a wonderful winter night’s meal and would also be good for guests or a pre-Christmas meal.
Thank you so much Lori! I am so glad this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
Made this the other night, it was spectacular! My husband raved about it!
That is so great! Thank you Leanne! xTieghan
Made this tonight and it was delish!
Will definitely make again!
Thank you Mary! I am so glad this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
1 lb chicken is only two breasts… are you sure you didn’t mean 2 lb? I ended up cutting the breasts in 1/3 pieces in order to be able to serve four people.
HI! I use only about 1 pound of chicken (my breast are usually pretty large, so I cut them in half), but feel free to use 2 pounds if that feeds your family/guest best. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you and happy holidays! xTieghan
Made this the other night and it was fabulous! My guy loved it and this will definitely be on my rotation of regular dishes! Thanks so much Tieghan!
That is so great! Thank you Linda! xTieghan
My husband and I enjoyed this recipe and it was super easy to make! We will make it again! Thank you for sharing this easy, one skillet recipe!
Thank you so much for trying this! xTieghan
Made this with rice instead of orzo to accommodate my gluten free husband. This recipe was actually perfect for a fridge/pantry cleanout day! I thawed some frozen chicken breasts and had all the other items on hand! It was delicious and easy! Enough for dinner and a couple lunches for the week!
Thank you so much Grace! I am so glad you loved this recipe so much! xTieghan
Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you so much for this recipe! This is about to be a new staple in our house
Thank you so much Rebecca! I am so glad this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
This was crazy delicious. Took about 45 minutes and was something I would have been thrilled to eat at a restaurant. Husband and toddler loved it too!! Huge win.
Thank you Lauren! I am so glad this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
Oh my gosh, definitely going to give this recipe a go.
YES!! I hope you love! Thank you! xTieghan
Do you think I could make this using Salmon instead of chicken and lessen the baking time?
HI! I am sure salmon will be delicious! Great idea! Yes, just reduce the baking time and that will work so well! Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you and happy holidays! xTieghan
This was INCREDIBLE. I subbed Arborio rice for the Orzo (it’s all I had), and it was SO good! I also added mushrooms–other than that, followed exactly and it was a top 5 meal EVER. And I cook a ton 🙂 . Thanks for the amazing and easy recipe!
Thank you Kami! I am so glad this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
Not a fan of dijon mustard, but wondering if I would even be able to taste? If so, is there something to substitute it with or just don’t add it in? Excited to make this (might do risotto instead too), thank you!!
HI! You don’t taste it much, but you can easily just omit the mustard. Not a big deal at all. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you and happy holidays! xTieghan
What could I use in place of the wine? Just trying to avoid the store ?
HI! You can use an equal amount of chicken broth or apple juice. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you and happy holidays! xTieghan
So easy and delicious. I took the advice of a friend and made it in my foodie which was awesome because the oven was baking christmas cookies. I also didn’t add the spinach until after the cook, just my preference on how i like spinach.
I am so glad you loved this recipe so much Maribeth! Thank you so much! xTieghan
Made this tonight and it was delicious! I doubled the orzo based on comments about how good it is, and I was happy I did. When I started cooking I realized I didn’t have any wine, so I subbed in dry vermouth, and it was so good. I used coconut milk and doubled the quantity to take care of my doubled orzo.
Will definitely make this again!
Thank you so much Josie! I am so glad you loved this recipe so much! xTieghan
I made the sun-dried tomato and chicken dish in my iron skillet today and it turned out delicious! I used skinless bone-in chicken thighs instead of boneless and added more time in the oven at a lower temp(375). The flavors are great especially if you use a smoky paprika. It’s important to use a high quality paprika and not just a generic paprika. Thanks for a great one dish meal. The spinach and sun-dried tomatoes are wonderful with the orzo and chicken.
That is so amazing to hear! Thank you so much for trying this Melissa! xTieghan
HiTieghan, I’ve been a great fan for many years, bought your first cookbook for my daughters and love your work. Any suggestions for your best dairy free recipes for Christmas. Not necessarily vegan. One daughter is nursing and her baby has a dairy allergy. (Another daughter has Chrone’s and I still like your recipes and use them for her when I can when I visit her.) love your journey.
Hi Laura!! I would recommend my roasted Brussels sprouts, winter salad, and beef tenderloin. I just share my full holiday menu today. Linked below! Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love everything you make!! Thank you and happy holidays! xTieghan

Super easy and extremely delicious. I’d love a way to lighten it up a little just because I’m kinda chubby right now and don’t need all that cream! Very flavorful, loved the combination of the mustard, sundried tomatoes and spinach with the toasted orzo. A keeper for sure.
Hi Lynda! I am so glad you loved this recipe! Everything in moderation as well! I am sure you look amazing! xTieghan
Made this in my Staub braised for dinner last night and it is now in my top 10 dishes! So good. For us it would serve 4 rather than 6, maybe because it’s hard to stop eating it! Thank you!!
Thank you Beth! I am so glad this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
As with almost all Half Baked Harvest recipes, this was outstanding. Entire family enjoyed it. The sun dried tomatoes give it that extra special something. Thanks!
Thank you Katherine! I am so glad this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
I just made this and my husband loves it. It went together fairly easy and the flavors are fresh and complementary. I’ll definitely make this again and soon!
Thank you so much Vicki! I am so glad this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
Home run! I made this tonight and it was delicious and so quick and easy! I subbed pearl couscous for orzo, because that’s all I had, and frozen chopped spinach- which turned out great because it blended right into the sauce instead of having large pieces of spinach! I’m hoping your new cookbook is under my Christmas tree! If not, next Amazon 🙂
Haha that is so great! I hope the book is under the tree for you as well! Thank you so much Lesia! xTieghan
Just finished eating this for dinner. It was delicious. Thank you for sharing. I asked Santa for Super Simple. 🙂
That is so great to hear! Thank you so much April! xTieghan
This was amazing! I subbed the heavy cream for coconut milk because it’s what we had on hand and this was DEFINITELY a winner. Served it with some homemade bread and leftover Pinot Grigio I used for this recipe. This was super simple and will definitely be on repeat here.
That is so amazing to hear! Thank you so much Miranda! xTieghan
Made for dinner last night and it was delicious! My chicken breasts were huge and took about 10 extra minutes to bake, so next time I will slice in half or smaller pieces. Will definitely make this again!
I am so glad you loved this Emmaline! Thank you for trying it! xTieghan
Also another side note- this dish fed four hungry adults with no leftovers. I would say that this would feed six if children were at the table or if you weren’t very hungry.
Love to hear that!! Thank you Miranda! xTieghan
Do you think adding some white beans to this would work.
HI! White beans will be delicious. I would add them with the spinach. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you and happy holidays! xTieghan
Made this for dinner last night and wow was it a winner! I used risotto rice and coconut milk to make it GF and DF, and added an extra cup of spinach. I had large chicken breasts so I cooked them about 5 minutes longer. Also loved how simple and fast this was to make!
Yes! That is so great Melisa! So glad you loved this! xTieghan
Will try this without chicken/meat of any kind, as I’m a vegetarian cook. Looks good!
Thank you Todd! I hope you enjoy this!! xTieghan
Made this tonight for my husband and he loved it. Thank you! Simple, well written recipe. Felt and looked like a gourmet dinner. You are amazing!
Awh you are too kind! I am so glad this turned out so well for you two!! xTieghan
This was amazing! I added the lemon juiced and rosemary about 5 mins into baking to incorporate the flavors. The rosemary added such great flavor.
Thank you so much Cassie! I am so glad this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
Made this for dinner the other night and my husband insists I bring it to Christmas dinner with his family. It was THAT good. Any make ahead tips, could you prep up to the point of where it needs to be put in the oven and let set for a few hours?
What a hit! I am a big fan of all your recipes but this was fast, easy and “like a fancy dish you’d get in a restaurant,” according to my boyfriend. We both went back for seconds, and this will be a staple comfort dish on rotation!
That is so amazing! I am so glad you and your boyfriend loved this dish. Thank you! xTieghan
What a hit! I am a big fan of all your recipes, but this was fast, easy, and “like a fancy dish you’d get in a restaurant,” according to the boyfriend. We both went back for seconds. This will be a comfort dish in rotation! Thank you!
I just made this recipe for some friends as a holiday dinner get together and it could not have been better. It was a warm and delicious dish… took me about an hour in total and really wow’d my friends who thought I had incredible cooking skills!!! Thanks for the recipe!!
Awh thank you for trying it!! I am so glad this turned out so well for you and your friends Colin! Happy Holidays! xTieghan
Hi! I don’t really love sun dried tomatoes. Do you have any substitutions you recommend or can they be left out? I am planning on making this soon! Thanks! Love following you! Happy holidays.
HI! You can simply omit the sun-dried tomatoes. The dish will still be delicious with the spinach and orzo. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you and Merry Christmas! xTieghan
This was a quick and delicious recipe that everyone in my house enjoyed! That is always a trick.
I would like to make this for a group of 11, could cook the chicken in batches, then do the liquid, orzo and spinach and finally put everything in a few glass dishes to cook in the oven? Thank you!
hi! Yes, I think that sounds like a great idea! I would just cook the orzo mix in a large 12 inch skillet or dutch oven, sear the chicken, then add to the orzo. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you and I hope you had a Merry Christmas! xTieghan
Delicious ? easy and quick, not a morsel left ??♥️
That is so amazing! Thank you Sharon! xTieghan
I just finished eating this meal for dinner and it was lovely! So warm, creamy and comforting. I will definitely make this again. Thank you for sharing the recipe!

delicious!! my entire family really enjoyed it! will definitely make again.
Thank you so much Maureen! xTieghan
I knew I needed to make this when I saw the recipe on the blog. Definitely one of our new favorites!! The sauce is absolutely incredible. We recently traveled to Italy, and this sauce rivals the best of them.
Wow!! Thank you so much Cassandra! xTieghan
This was SO good and super easy!! Just made for dinner tonight :).
Thank you so much Meagan! xTieghan
I’ve made this multiple times already. My husband and I love the flavors, quickness, and easiness of this dish! Plus left overs for an amazing lunch.
I am so glad to hear that Kati! xTieghan
Hi! Currently making only to discover my oven is broken! Can I do All on stove top? Newbie chef here 🙂
Hi Sarah! Yes, you can finish cooking on the stove-top. Just simmer the dish, covered for 15-20 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you and Happy New Year! xTieghan
Just had this for dinner tonight and it’s so delicious! I used arborio rice, and I really appreciated the notes that you and others left about adding at least an extra cup of water as well as extra cooking time to help the rice cook thoroughly. The dish came out so yummy!
Thank you so much Marilu! I am so glad you loved this recipe! xTieghan
Delicious!!! I couldn’t found orzo but I used a soup pasta called “Lengüitas” from Barilla, which has almost the same shape. It was creamy and OMG the chicken!! I used chicken thighs with skin and they were crispy. I only missed the salt in the recipe, since the Parmesan didn’t made all the job, but it was really good!! Thank you very much for sharing your recipes Thiegan!! I have both books and I love them too!!!
I am so glad this turned out so well for you Alejandra! Thank you so much for trying this! xTieghan
Delicious. I’m going to add mushrooms and a little more wine next time.
I am so glad this turned out so well for you Diane! Thank you so much! xTieghan
Delicious one skillet meal I prepared for my family this first evening of 2020- everyone loved it! And I loved having a meal to prepare in one skillet! Win-win!
Thank you so much Kristen! I am so glad you loved this recipe! xTieghan
SO GOOD! I subbed quinoa for the orzo 1:1 with no problem. I’ve made it twice in 10 days–this will be on steady rotation.
Thank you Sara! So happy to hear that! xTieghan
Delicious! I substituted coconut milk and it was soooo good. The skillet is key. Thanks for this awesome recipe!
Thank you so much Susan! I am so glad this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
Probably one of the best recipes I have tried out lately. Wish I had remembered to take a picture cause it was amazing. Going to make it for a dinner party when I finally have an apartment big enough to have people over. Seriously awesome recipe!
Awh that is so great to hear! Thank you for trying this Tai! xTieghan
Dear Tieghan,
My life is now complete. Thank you.
I just finished eating this with my husband and 3 young kids. It is absolutely divine.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. This recipe is a keeper and will be used very often. It’s my first of your recipes, and definitely will not be the last. I can’t wait to dive into all of your other recipes.
I used canned coconut milk in lieu of the heavy cream. Everything else, as is. So delicious.
If you’re on the fence about making this recipe, hop on over to the delicious side!
Thanks, Tieghan!
Thank you so much Christiane! I am so glad you enjoyed this recipe so much!! xTieghan
I left a great review but forgot to rate with stars.
5 stars!!
Hi, made this tonight for dinner and it was fantastic! Easy to make and the flavors are just perfect together. We used both chicken breast and boneless chicken thighs as that’s what my family prefers. Once again, your recipes never fail to impress. Easy and full of flavor!
Thank you so much Amy! I am so glad this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
Very easy and delicious. Thank you!
Thank you Carmen! xTieghan
Do you think this would be good with chicken and shrimp mixed? I’m not sure I have enough chicken In the freezer for four of us, but have frozen raw shrimp.
Hi Danielle! I am sure adding some shrimp would be delicious. Great idea! Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you! xTieghan
My husband said it was one of the best meals I’ve ever made and my 2 year old loved it too. Thanks for providing consistently delicious meals.
That is so great! Thank you so much Alison! xTieghan
I’ve made this twice now!! Amazing both times and everything cooked up exactly as it was supposed to. For once the chicken actually didn’t stick and browned perfectly. I think I’ve always flipped it too soon. Wish I could post a pic cause it’s so beautiful and looks exactly like the posted one!!! ❤️
Thank you so much Stacy! xTieghan
I just discovered your blog a week ago. This recipe is the third one I have made in a week. My husband and I loved this! I had half a jar of roasted red peppers so I added those to use them up. I used chicken tenderloins and they were perfect. Thank you so much for such a great recipe!
Thank you Jonette! I am so glad this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
This. Is. Amazing. I doubled it since my husband and I always have dinner for lunch the next day and it still fit in one pan! Barely ? subbed regular milk instead of heavy cream and added a little extra cheese. Its unreal good and super easy. This will be in the regular rotation for sure!
Thank you so much Lyndsey! I am so glad this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
I am SO not a cook, but a friend and I tried this for dinner tonight (literally my first time cooking dinner) and it was so delicious! It was so easy that the hardest part was figuring out how to trim chicken lol!! Plus Salted Carmel Pretzel Snickerdoodle cookies for dessert which were just heavenly! We were so proud of ourselves and are now both feeling the cooking bug!! Thank you so much! love all your recipes and cannot wait to try more!
That is so great! I am so glad you loved this recipe and I hope you continue to enjoy others! Thank you Elisabeth! xTieghan
I made this last night and my family loved it! My husband called it “restaurant good”. I used coconut milk in place of the heavy cream and used a little more spinach just because. Thank you! Can’t wait to make this one again.
Thank you so much Martha! I am so glad this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
Hi Tieghan! I’m an avid HBH follower but have never commented before! I LOVED this recipe! Flavor was amazing and it was so easy to whip together! I do have one question. When it was all done, there was a significant amount of oil sitting on top. Did I add too much of something? Or should I add less of something in the future to avoid the oil excess?
Thanks again! I truly love your recipes and they have gotten double Thumbs up from all family/friends that I make them for!
Hi Kristen! Hmm, not sure why there would have been oil. Next time, try really drain off the oil from the tomatoes. My only though is that your tomatoes could have had a lot of oil on them from the jar. I think that might help! Please let me know if you have any other questions. I am so glad you loved this recipe! Thank you for all your kind words! xTieghan
Hi – trying this tonight – question – should the cream be boiling? Or do I turn down the heat after boiling the water then add the cream?
Hi Joy! The cream can boil, but turn the heat down to medium. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you! xTieghan
This was DELICIOUS!! Directions and cooking times were perfect. Thank you so much.
Thank you Donna! I am so glad you liked this! xTieghan
Just found you on Instagram so this is the first recipe I’ve made of yours…absolutely delicious!! I look forward to trying many more…thank you!
Welcome! I am so glad you loved this recipe, Diane! I hope you love all others you try of mine! xTieghan
One of my favourite HBH recipes yet! My parents and sister DEVOURED it. It has such a lovely, unique brightness, its not nearly as overwhelmingly rich as you would think. Lemon works miracles for that! And the sun dried tomatoes were so perfect.
Thank you so much Tammi! I am so glad this turned out so well for you and your family!! xTieghan
Easy, delicious, and full of flavor. Made it using boneless, skinless chicken thighs. Will be making this again.
Thank you so much Susan! I am so glad you enjoyed this recipe! xTieghan
Making this recipe for the third time tonight. This is absolutely delicious!
Received your two cookbooks as Christmas gifts- Enjoyed looking through them and now ready for cooking & baking!
That is so great! I hope you love all of the recipes in the book! Also, so glad you have been loving this recipe Lora! Thank you! xTieghan
Dinner tonight and it was FANTASTIC! I used chicken borth instead of water, because I had it on hand. I used about 1.5 lbs of boneless thighs. Everything else was pretty much as written. I used my cast iron skillet and could probably shorten some of those stove-top times …
I recommend tasting the sauce for seasoning right before you slide the chicken back in, and don’t skip the lemon! It adds the perfect zing. Thanks for another keeper 🙂
Thank you so much Vanessa! I am so happy you tried this and loved it! xTieghan
This was so good! I was hesitant to try these recipes. They looked good but I was hoping they tasted good too and they definitely do!!! I had 10 of my closest friends as my Guinea pigs for a going away dinner and these recipes did not disappoint! Everything was delicious!!
Thank you so much! xTieghan
Hello – this is a question – Can I substitute Evaporated Milk for the heavy cream in this recipe? I’d love to make it but I need to lower the fat content for my husband. Thank you! MW
HI! Yes, I think that will work. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you!! xTieghan
Hello and question – Do you think I could substitute Evaporated Milk for the heavy Cream?
HI! I think that could work well. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you!! xTieghan
I always love your recipes and can’t wait to try this one! Can I ask about what size your skillet is?
Hi Kathy! My exact one is linked on my shop page!! xTieghan
I have made this recipe probably four times in the last month….so very good! My daughter is gluten free….could rice be swapped for the orzo? If so, would the other ingredients and timing be different? Love all your recipes I have tried so far…especially the cast iron skillet ones!
Hi Karin! Rice will take longer to cook, but I am sure it will work well. You could also use GF orzo.
If you use rice, just add 10 minutes of cooking time. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I am so glad you love this recipe! Thank you!! xTieghan
This dish was so delicious, we were scraping our plates!! It was also beautiful and super easy. I wouldn’t change a single thing! ❤️❤️❤️
Hi Melissa! Wow! That is so amazing to hear! Thank you so much! xTieghan
I just made this and it is off the hook! Crazy easy! Super flavorful. I love your blog and recipes!
Hi Claudine! You are so sweet! Thank you so much! xTieghan
Made this for dinner tonight and it was delicious! I ended up using risotto instead of orzo bc that’s what I had on hand, and just adjusted the cooking time accordingly. I’ll definitely be making this again!
Hi Jess! I am really glad this turned out so well for you! Thank you so much! xTieghan
Oh. My. Goodness. This is the second recipe I’ve made this week from this site and it was literally one of the tastiest meals I’ve ever had. So satisfying and simple!
Hi Nicole! Thank you so much for trying this!! So glad it turned out so well for you! xTieghan
Oh
My
Gosh
This chicken is freakin’ AMAZING!!!
Thank you so much Laura! I am so glad you enjoyed it! xTieghan
Hi! Would it be possible to make this with different pasta? I would love to make with fresh linguine. Would that cook too quickly and get mushy though? Looks delicious!
Hey Katie! If using fresh pasta I would recommend only adding 1 cup water and cooking the pasta for 3-4 minutes in the water. I have not tested this, but this would be my recommendation. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you!! xTieghan
So easy to make! Tastes soooo good!! Thank you!!!! i am really enjoying all of your recipes and i just purchased your latest book.
Thank you Lisa! I hope you are enjoying my book! Have you tried any recipes so far? xTieghan
I love this recipe! I made it with chicken for our New Years Eve dinner, but I am going to try and sub shrimp tonight because I have a lot of frozen shrimp taking over my freezer!
Amazing! I hope this turns out wonderful for you! So glad you already have enjoyed it! xTieghan
Tieghan!! Your recipes are literal perfection. When my boyfriend and I don’t have anything in mind for dinner (or lunch the next day) we immediately come to HBH. Every recipe we’ve made is to die for! They are all so good. Made this on Thursday – ate it all – and are already making it again today (Saturday!!!). The only thing we did is subbed sundried tomatoes for burst cherry tomatoes because I’m not a huge fan of sundried. But seriously, perfection.
Wow that is so great to hear! I am so glad you and your boyfriend have been loving my recipes!! I hope you continue to! Thank you! Hayley! xTieghan
This is my new favorite recipe! I made it Christmas Eve for family, for a dinner party with great friends, for my nephew and his new girlfriend and this week I’m making it for an old high school friend who’s visiting. It’s been photographed, the recipe’s been requested, you have a new follower because of it and most importantly…simple to make and enjoyed by all! Thanks for helping me look like a great cook!?
I am so glad you are loving this recipe!! Thank you so much for trying it Amy! xTieghan
Wow!! I just made this and it’s amazing!!Thank you for all the wonderful recipes.
Thank you for trying them Paula! xTieghan
I made this for dinner last night and it was AMAZING. I made it exactly as the recipe said except I used red onions instead of shallots. I used chardonnay because it is what I had on hand. SO delicious and perfect for our -15 degrees Alaska evening. I will make this again and again!
Oh wow!! Yes, I hope this warmed you up! Thank you so much for trying this Erin! xTieghan
I made it today , it came out as described delicious !
Thank you Dina! I am so glad this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
This was delicious! I had chicken stock on hand so I used it instead of the water and I chopped up some rosemary and added it with the cream and Dijon instead of adding at the end. I loved this one pot meal!!
Thank you so much Corrina! xTieghan
flavorful, easy to make
Thank you Karin! xTieghan
Made this twice and my family and I are obsessed. Thank you so much for this one!
Thank you for trying this Michaela! xTieghan
I made this for a board game night and a friend made Zuppa Toscana. The paring was excellent. I chose a combo of white and dark meat; that was perfect for picky eaters. I found a lactose free heavy cream that worked fantastic. I wasn’t too keen on the coconut cream as I felt the flavor would not be true to what you originally had in mind. Nobody noticed the difference! I chose chicken stock instead of water to not compromise the existing chicken flavor. Thanks for the recipe! I would totally recommend and make this again!
Thank you so much for trying this Steven! So glad it turned out so well for you! xTieghan
This is probably my favorite of your recipes! It’s so simple to make and the flavors are wonderful. Hearty and perfect for the cold. Can’t wait to make it again 🙂
Wow that is so great to hear! Thank you so much! xTieghan
This was the first recipe of yours I’ve made and now I may make every one of them. The best one pot recipe I’ve made and I can’t think of anything else I’ve made that’s this easy, fast and delicious.
Thank you so much Erica! I am so glad you enjoyed this! I hope you love all of the others you try as well! xTieghan
This was amazing! I added in some broccolini and we all loved it!! Thank you!!
Love that! Thank you Ali! xTieghan
This recipe was fantastic! We made it dairy-free with a can of coconut milk and it tasted great.
Thank you so much Danny! xTieghan
I am planning on serving this to 5 people tonight so have 3 breasts (about 1.5 lbs) For serving I was thinking of slicing the chicken breasts in diagonal strips and placing them back in the orzo. Do you have a better suggestion?
Hey Regina! I think that is a great idea and I imagine it should work well! Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you!! xTieghan
Incredible recipe
Thank you Court! xTieghan
This was amazing. Restaurant quality meal! Quick and easy. And LOVED that it was in one pan!
I am so glad this turned out so well for you Kristen! Thank you so much for trying this! xTieghan
Made this last night. Insanely delicious! Very simple to make. Have oven preheated, everything chopped, prepped and measured before starting and this dish comes together just like in the video! Really! My husband, who says he dislikes orzo pasta for some strange reason (???) really liked this. He loved that “the flavourful, creamy sauce coated all the little pasta noodles”
I am def going to make this again but maybe try it with Chicken Meatballs seasoned with oregano, lemon zest and capers next time! Thanks for your insipirarion Tieghan!!
Haha that is so great! Thank you so much for trying this recipe, Cher! So glad you both loved it! xTieghan
Easy and delicious! My husband was about three bites in when he said “We should definitely add this to he rotation.” Yum!
Wow yes!! So glad you both loved this recipe, Lindy! xTieghan
Love this recipe. Made it 3 times already. Was considering trying it with shrimp. Any recommendations on Cook time adjustments.
HI! I am sure that will be great! Just sear the shrimp for 3-4 minutes per side, until cooked. Then add to the orzo and skip the oven portion of the recipe. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you!! xTieghan
Amazing! My son who is 9 said, “Something smells good!” He asked to have to it for lunch the next day. I thought it was amazing too. Great recipe!
Wow! That is too cute! I am so glad you both enjoyed this recipe, Jennifer! Thank you! xTieghan
What a treat to make a recipe that turns out exactly as described! It was full of flavor, perfectly saucy (I was skeptical), chicken was moist and spinach was not over cooked! WINNER! I made 3 small adjustments; I cut my 3 chicken breasts into 6 pieces, lightly pounded them into ~1” pieces and marinaded them 30 min in 2T EVO, paprika, oregano, salt and pepper, then seared them in the sun dried tomato oil for extra flavor, and subbed chicken stock for water. Oh! And I garnished with pine nuts! YUM! It was gorgeous and delicious!
Hi Michelle! I am so glad this turned out so well for you! Thank you so much for trying it! xTieghan
This was great! I substituted kale for the spinach. We loved it. A new favorite!
Amazing! Thank you so much for trying this Jerry! xTieghan
This is my new favorite recipe! I tried it for the first time with company over and everyone raved about it! I made more than a pound of chicken (probably closer to two) and the recipe still worked great (and provides more leftovers). Amazing recipe!
Thank you so much Gracie! I am so glad this recipe turned out so well for you! xTieghan
This meal was easy-peasy to prepare and so delicious. I followed the recipe as is and didn’t change a thing. The meal looked beautiful just like the photo and everyone loved it. Definitely a 5 star recipe!
Thank you so much Cezi! I am really glad you enjoyed this! xTieghan
I’m wondering how asparagus might go in this dish? I don’t have any fresh spinach on hand, but I do have some asparagus that I’ve been wanting to use. I was thinking I could cut it into 2” pieces and add it when the chicken goes in, prior to going in the oven. Any thoughts? This recipe sounds absolutely delicious!
Hi Jennifer! That will be delicious and I love the idea!! I would do exactly as you suggested 🙂 Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you!! xTieghan
Delicious! I skipped the 1st step of browning the chicken since mine was already cooked, although I did sprinkle it with the spices listed. The only other change was using 1/2 & 1/2 instead I’d the heavy cream- so so so good!! Thank you!
Thank you so much Liz! I am so glad this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
I love this recipe! I’ve made it about 4 times now, only thing I added was more garlic. So simple and yet so good, thank you!
Thank you so much Cassandra! xTieghan
I want to make this for a dinner party but don’t want to spend time a lot of time in the kitchen when my guests are over. Do you have make ahead tips? For example do everything except the last 10 minute bake before guests get there? Do the whole thing in advance and then reheat in the oven?
Hi Tracey! Yes! I would just do everything up until the last bake, then bake for 20 minutes before serving to warm the dish throughout. That works wonderfully! Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you!! xTieghan
I used twice as much spinach. My family loved it. You are quickly becoming my favorite food blogger. 🙂
Aw that is so amazing to hear! I am so glad you are loving my recipes and I hope you continue to! Thank you Natasha! xTieghan
Made this for dinner last night! Had to leave a review. This was SO. GOOD!! I didn’t have sun dried tomatoes so I just chopped a regular tomato and used chicken broth (didn’t have white wine). Will be making again and again! A huge hit! =)
Thank you so much Jade!! I am so glad this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
Amazing, I made it last weekend and was so good I made it again this weekend ?
Love that!! Thank you so much for trying this Tina! xTieghan
This recipe looks amazing! Unfortunately my husband hates orzo pasta. And rice too! Something about the texture. Do you recommend another pasta that would work for this? Or I can always try a two dish meal and make a different kind of pasta separately and stir it in. Thanks!! 🙂
Hey Sarah! Any short cut pasta will work well here. I would recommend a small pasta shell! Also, quinoa would work too. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you!! xTieghan
I have made this a few times now. I love it! I added sliced mushrooms when cooking the shallots the last time i made it. Yumm! I love all of your recipes that i have tried so far. They are always easy and delicious! Thank you!
Thank you Mary! I am so happy to hear that this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
Ding ding ding! This recipe is phenomenal. We just finished walking this off and all we could talk about was how delicious dinner was! The only amendments I made were: chopped up the sun dried tomatoes, added more spinach and more paprika, used a combination of white and dark meat chicken. This dish was savory, acidic and absolutely perfect! I chose an Italian Pinot Grigio to use as our dry white wine and we drank the rest of the bottle with dinner. My husband says this is a Must Repeat! Thank you!!!
Hi Jennifer! I ma so glad this recipe turned out so well for you! Thank you so much for trying this one! xTieghan
Seriously my new favorite recipe. Easy to follow, easy to make, and the flavors are AMAZING. I added extra garlic and roasted some broccoli for a side and had food to feed 5 people. If you are looking for a new chicken recipe, THIS IS IT.
Yes!! I am so glad you are loving this recipe Angela! Thank you so much for trying it! xTieghan
I’ve made this several times- so easy and everyone likes it. Made it tonight during quarantine /social distancing and only thing I didn’t have was cream do subbed a little milk & a little cream cheese. Delicious. We love all your recipes!
Thank you so much Jill! I am so glad this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
Winner! Have recently discovered your site, and excited to continue trying your recipes. This one has wonderful blend of flavors, and so easy. Husband who is not a fan of orzo or sun dried tomatoes, gave this one a thumbs up. High praise! Thank you!
Thank you Jan! I am so glad this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
SO dang GOOD! Made this for the first time last week, it was a hit with the family and will be making again soon (maybe tonight.) Perfect rainy day, stuck inside meal that’s easy, but tastes special.
Ooo love that! Thank you so much for trying this Deb! I hope you love it just as much the second time! xTieghan
Fabulous. That’s it. I would trust this woman with my life.
Haha you are too kind!! I am so glad you are loving this recipe and others! Thank you Debbe! xTieghan
Will be making this all the time! So easy, creamy and filling and is the whole dinner all in ONE SKILLET! The best suggestion was to pair with crusty bread to soak up the sauce. Perfection!
Thank you so much Anna! I am so happy to hear that this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
My family’s measuring stick for new recipes is “Would we make this for company?” The first thing my husband said after digging into this was “We could totally make this for a dinner party.” It was incredible! So many flavors, but not competing or cancelling each other. Totally complementing each other. I was leery of boneless chicken breasts and worried they would dry out in the oven, but they remained tender and juicy. The orzo was creamy and saucy. Fancy dinner in less than an hour! Don’t skip the lemon squeeze at the end! We will definitely make this again. Thank you, Tieghan!
Amazing!! I am so glad this turned out so well for you! Thank you so much for trying it! xTieghan
This recipe was delicious and so easy to make! My whole family was really impressed with me! The flavours were so warm and comforting. I used chicken thighs and they were extremely juicy. Will definitely be cooking this meal again soon.
Love to hear that! Thank you for trying this Hannah! I hope you love other recipes of mine! xTieghan
Do you think this recipe would work with other types of pasta? It’s almost impossible to find orzo or rice at my grocery store right now.
Thank you!
Hi Erika,
Yes another super short cut noodle would be great!
If I want to do twice as much rice, do I add twice as much water and wine?
Hi Rioko,
I am afraid if you double this recipe it will not fit into the skillet!
Wow! Really yummy. I didn’t have spinach so I used asparagus, worked great! Thank you.
Thank you Nancy! xTieghan
This was absolutely incredible!
On average, I make at least 3 of your recipe’s a week. This was a wonderful and simple Monday night meal. I am a nurse and it is rough right now so having the ability to make a great dinner for my family after a long day without a whole lot of prep or cleanup is a blessing.
Thank you!!
Thank you so much Candice! That is so amazing to hear! Thank you for trying this! xTieghan
Hi! Making this now. So all the lemon juice goes on everything while its still in the skillet – after it cooked in the oven correct??
Hi Alisha! It can go on the skillet or on the individual servings! Which ever you prefer! I hope you love this recipe! xTieghan
My whole family loved this recipe! Made this recipe with the chicken cut up into bite size pieces for ease of eating.
Thank you so much Tara! xTieghan
Oh my word We are in love with this one!
Next time I will double the orzo, sundried tomato and cream sauce!
SO GOOD! Nailed it!
Thank you so much Anita! I am so glad this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
I made this tonight for dinner! It was absolutely delicious!!!! I shared the cooking process with my mom since we can’t be together (ugh…covid-19) and she was very jealous over the finished product! I will most certainly make this again…and again…and again! Thank you Tieghan!!!
Thank you! I am really glad this turned out so well for you Joseph! I hope your mother loves it as well if she gets a chance to try it! xTieghan
Very delicious! Loved it, thank you so much for the recipe! For us it was 3 servings hahah.
Amazing! I am so glad you all enjoyed this Eva! Thank you for trying it! xTieghan
I couldn’t find orzo at the grocery store with all the grocery stores being so scarce these days.. any suggestions on subbing the orzo?? Thank you!
Hi Shellie! I would sub the orzo for risotto! I hope you love this recipe! Please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
Just made this tonight. I used whole wheat orzo because that’s what we had in the pantry, added some extra asparagus to the spinach, and used apple cider vinegar instead of wine because I didn’t have any on hand. Recipe was very easy to follow and it came out deliciously! Would definitely make again.
Hi Meghan! I am so glad this turned out so well for you! Thank you so much for trying it! xTieghan
Hello, this is my kind of dinner and I have all the ingredients except fresh spinach. I do have frozen leaf spinach. What are your thoughts for using that and how much? Thanks.
Hi Jude,
You could skip the spinach or you could use your frozen spinach just be sure to drain any excess liquid! I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
I made this for dinner tonight. It was soooo GOOD! I followed directions (only change, was I added some roughly chopped baby bella mushrooms.
So easy to make in the one skillet! Definitely will be making again!
Thank you so much Catherine! That is so amazing to hear! xTieghan
Made this tonight with Barilla gluten free elbows since I couldn’t find gluten free orzo. Didn’t change a thing otherwise and SO GOOD. And now I have extra garlic and rosemary to make quarantine focaccia this weekend!
Thank you so much Smita! I am so glad this recipe turned out so well for you all! xTieghan
This dish is absolutely delicious! So easy as well. My husband said many times how good it was! Love your recipes!
Wow that is so amazing! Thank you for trying this one, Stephanie! xTieghan
Made as per instructions, however I did add some morel mushrooms that I had left in the cupboard. I rehydrated them and then added along with the spinach and tomatoes. It was to die for! Going to make for the second time tomorrow night. Wish I had some morels left, but will pick some other kind up from the store tomorrow and give them a try.
That is so great! Thank you for trying this one, Sandra! xTieghan
Could I make this recipe with chicken stock instead of the heavy cream to make it lighter in fat and calories? Would the amount be the same?
Hi Jessica,
Yes that would work! I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
This tasted great – thank you! I did use chicken thighs with the bone in, and it worked. I will certain make this again. Having a cast-iron skillet helped a lot.
Thank you so much Sar! That is so amazing to hear! xTieghan
SO good! Made twice in the past couple weeks. First time just as the recipe reads, except that I had honey Dijon. Next time I had already gotten started, thought had all the ingredients… Oops, missing shallots, cream AND parmesan. So, used yellow onion, feta & a bit of cream cheese. Still absolutely delicious, and my family still raved, not even noticing the swaps. Great recipe to follow the “method” and not worry about following exactly.
I am so glad this turned out so well for you with modifications! Amazing! Thank you Deb! xTieghan
Made this over the weekend and it was amazing! So easy and delish. Can’t wait to try more of your recipes!
Thank you so much Britt! That is so amazing to hear! xTieghan
Can you taste the Dijon? Would it make a difference to the taste if I omit it?
Thanks!
Hi Sarah,
There is a hint of it, but you could totally leave it out. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
Hi,
Any way to make this vegetarian, but with some kind of protein? Would tofu work?
Hi Sandhya,
I haven’t tested this with tofu, but I think that would be great! I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
So! Good. Made this for my family when I visited for a bit and they loved it. Am planning on making again this weekend! I made w bone in skin on chicken thighs so I had to cook in oven about twice as long, but it allowed for more moisture to be absorbed so the orzo was just amazing!
Thank you so much Katherine! I am so glad this turned out so well for you and I hope you love it more this weekend! xTieghan
We’re obsessed with this. Made it twice this month. It’s really easy to make, very little prep and tastes restaurant quality.
Wow I am so glad this turned out so well for you! Thank you for trying it Jared! xTieghan
Easy, Delicious, Perfect!
Thank you so much Teresa! xTieghan
Delicious! Husband says it’s a keeper! 😎
Love that!! Thank you so much DeeDee! xTieghan
Hi! We don’t have any sun dried tomatoes. Would it be weird to use a can of whole peeled tomatoes?
Hi Genevieve,
You could do that, I would maybe just do half of the can. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
I use your recipes every single weeknight! Thank you so much for sharing!
Maybe I’m dumb, or maybe it’s a good observation.. but I wish the recipe said to pat dry the sun dried tomatoes before adding. I don’t Cook with them often, and the oil from the tomatoes almost ruined my dish. It was so greasy.
.. it had an amazing flavor. I just needed to soak up the oils first
I am so glad this recipe turned out so well for you Tay! Thank you so much for trying this recipe! xTieghan
Absolutely delicious! Used coconut milk instead of heavy cream and chicken thighs…so delicious!
Thank you so much Carla! xTieghan
SOOOO GOOD!!! The perfect cold rainy day dinner.
Yes!! Thank you Rachel! xTieghan
Made this and tasted delicious. However, the orzo at the bottom of the pan burned in the oven. I followed the recipe but had to leave it in the oven an extra five minutes to cook the chicken through. Would you recommend just cooking the chicken longer at the beginning when browning? Or is it something about my pan (a nonstick oven safe skillet). I have made similar one skillet chicken orzo dishes many times on the stove top (greek manestra) but this is the first time I’ve finished in the oven.
Hi!
Thanks so much for trying the recipe! I would cook the chicken longer at the beginning, I do also think that a cast iron skillet works best. Please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
Hi! I’ve made this dish before and love it! I’m currently in a rural area and there’s no orzo. I bought ditalini as a substitute. Is there anything I need to change in the cooking method to ensure the pasta turns out properly? Can I still sauté in a pan followed by the other steps or do I need to boil first?
Thanks!
Candice
Hi Candace,
So glad you have been enjoying this recipe! I think the ditalini pasta will be just fine if you leave the recipe as is. Hope this helps! xTieghan
How do you suggest doubling the recipe?!
Hi Liza,
I am not sure doubling the recipe would work in a skillet as it would be too much food. I supposed you could do this in a lasagna pan in the oven. Hope this helps! xTieghan
I made this tonight with 2 lbs of chicken breast, which was 5 breast pieces. It took 20 min in the oven to cook. I used whole milk instead of cream, and deglazed with chicken stock instead of wine. I didn’t like how the spinach lost it’s bright green color in the oven. Consider wilting it in the hot pan with after finishing the chicken in the oven. Or skipping the oven altogether, and do entirely on stovetop. I am glad I prepared another cup of orzo with wilted spinach on the stove, the yummy orzo in the pan wasn’t enough for 4 people without it. I will make it again – perhaps butterflying the breast’s and finishing covered on the stovetop.
Hi! I am really happy to hear that this recipe turned out well for you! Please let me know if there are any questions I can help you with! xTieghan
Yummy! I made this tonight with 2 lbs of chicken breast, which was 5 breast pieces. (No way is 1 lb of chicken 6 servings as the recipe states.) It took 20 min to finish in the oven. I used whole milk instead of cream, and deglazed with chicken stock instead of wine. I didn’t like how the spinach lost it’s bright green color in the oven. Consider wilting it in the hot pan after finishing the chicken in the oven. I am glad I prepared another cup of orzo with wilted spinach on the stove, the yummy orzo in the pan wasn’t enough for 4 people without it. I will make it again – perhaps will butterfly the breasts and finish covered on the stovetop.
Another AMAZING recipe!! I cannot tell you how blown away I am that you use simple ingredients, and a lot of the time it’s the same ones in multiple recipes. HOWEVER, each recipe tastes wildly different! How do you do that?! This recipe is by far a new family favorite. My kids love, what they call, “pasta-rice” now (Orzo). The only tweak I made was that I added while sprigs of rosemary to the orzo, while cooking, and removed them before serving. Excellent!!
Haha I just use my favorite ingredients! I am so glad you all enjoyed this one! And pasta rice.. so cute!! Thank you! xTieghan
This was really really delicous and super easy to make! My only critique of it is that, unless this is served alongside something else (like a big salad or some bread) I’d say this is more like a “serves 3-4” rather than “serves 6”.
Thank you so much Amy! xTieghan
Fantastic recipe Tieghan, Thank You!
I made this for my wife (for her birthday) and our son and they loved it.
Will be making this again, and also trying a few of your others.
Cheers!
Bradley
Thank you so much Bradley! I am so glad this recipe turned out so well for you! xTieghan
Made a variation of this tonight that still turned out delish – I used cubed up leftover roast turkey! Added a little extra water, some blended diced tomatoes as I didn’t have sun-dried on hand, and kale rather than spinach, also on hand. Delicious, and my daughter loved it too! Only 10 min in the oven as I didn’t want it to get too dried out. Ended up like a creamy casserole!
Aw that is so amazing to hear! Thank you so much for trying this one, Karyn! xTieghan
We have a french au pair and she thought this was the best thing she’s eaten in the states. I loved it because the prep and cook times were spot on, it could be made in one skillet! it looked good and it tasted special. And the small kids devoured it too. This is great for family dinner or to have for company. A perfect recipe in my book!
Wow that is so amazing! I am really glad you all enjoyed this recipe, Miller! Thank you! xTieghan
I made this and loved it. Diced the tomatoes and warmed the chicken in oven while preparing other steps. It was delicious, and leftovers were too.
Thank you so much Cynthia! xTieghan
I made this and loved it. Used boneless breasts. Diced the tomatoes and warmed the chicken in oven while preparing other steps. It was delicious, and leftovers were too.
Amazing! I am really glad this turned out so well for you, Cynthia! xTieghan
Made this tonight for dinner and it was delicious! I added in some cremini mushrooms and used mozzarella instead of parmesan cheese. Everyone had seconds – this will be in our dinner rotation for sure. Thanks for the great recipe!
Wow that is so great! Thank you so much Saya! xTieghan
I love this recipe. Fourth time I have made it and it just gets better. All my guests love it. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you Tracy!! That is so great to hear! xTieghan
Hi- I want to make this recipe however, I don’t cook with alcohol. What can I substitute the white wine for?
Thank you!
Hi Fatima,
You can use chicken broth in place of the white wine. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
This was delicious! I love this flavor combo and of course orzo is amazing.
Thank you Emily! xTieghan
Hi Tieghan,
I love this recipe, so much so that I am making it for my wedding this August. I plan to make it a few days in advance and heat it up on the day served with a salad and fresh bread. Do you have any recommendations for a summery salad that would pair well with this meal? Also, do you have any reheating recommendations?
Your big fan,
Gail
Hey Gail!! For a salad, what about my watermelon and tomato salad? Or peach salad? Links below!
I would reheat in the oven at 350 for 20 or so minutes, until warmed throughout. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you!! xTieghan

Hi Tieghan ! I was considering using rotini instead of orzo, which I can’t find anywhere. Do you recommend boiling pasta first then adding to the dish, or cooking it in the pan like the orzo ? I also planned on using frozen spinach, but I’m afraid it’ll release too much water and soak the dish. Should I sauté the spinach in a separate pan, drain it, then add it to the skillet ?
Hey Laura,
As far as the pasta I would recommend using a smaller noodle like a macaroni and then you can follow the recipe as is. For the spinach, I would let it thaw, squeeze out the extra liquid and then add to the dish. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
Absolutely incredible! I didn’t have any wine on hand like I thought I did so I just substituted chicken broth for both the wine and the water. Absolutely fabulous! My husband loved it and it will be added to our rotation for certain!
Love to hear that! Thank you for trying this one, Jen! xTieghan
This dish is absolutely fantastic and is sure to become one of our main “comfort food” dishes we keep on rotation. I wouldn’t change a thing about this–the flavors meld perfectly!
Thank you so much Kat! I am so glad this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
I just put all the ingredients in the crockpot except the spinach.I will add it at the end of cooking . I’m cleaning out a bedroom all day. Dinner will be ready when I’m done.
Aw that is so perfect!! I hope this is amazing for you, Tina! Thank you! xTieghan
My daughter made this for me last weekend, and I loved it so much that I made it again tonight. This is the most flavorful dish ever! She used coconut milk instead of heavy cream because she doesn’t do much dairy, and it was perfect. I’ve also been wading my way through your cookbooks, received 2 as birthday gifts. Everything I’ve made so far has been a winner:)
That is so great! I am really glad this turned out so well for you, Stella! Thank you for trying it! xTieghan
This is my all-time FAVORITE HBH recipe – and I’ve made 50+ HBH recipes, so I really mean it! One time I made it, I did throw in some artichoke that I had leftover in the fridge and it didn’t take away from the recipe. This is an absolute go-to in my house!
Thank you so much Christina!! I am really glad this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
Made this tonight and it is always amazing. The hint of Dijon mustard is just delish. I only had arugula and threw that in instead of spinach and it was super tasty! Also didn’t have heavy cream but did have my “nutpods” which is a dairy free creamer.. couldn’t even taste the difference and was still super creamy. I think within the next few months I’ll be able to make this without looking at the recipe bc I want to make it so much!!
Thank you so much Kelsey! I am really glad this recipe turned out so well for you! xTieghan
I have made this recipe so many times now that I have It memorized. I tell everyone about this one!! So easy, so delicious. It is a weekly staple in our home!!
Thank you so much Natalie! I am so happy to hear that!! xTieghan
Hi tieghan! I can’t find orzo anywhere. If I use medium shells instead, do I need to precook the pasta before adding to the dish or just follow the recipe as is?
Hey KL,
I think you would get the best results by using a smaller cut pasta, like elbows, and you can just follow the recipe as directed. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
Definitely a hit!! It was my first time to cook orzo. I look forward to trying it other ways too!! Great recipe! <3
Thank you so much Sarah! I am so happy to hear that! xTieghan
Any chance you have freezing instructions? Looking to bring this to a friend who recently had a baby and they may eat right away or freeze. thank you!
Hey Alexa,
I honestly don’t think this would be the best meal to freeze, the orzo could easily become mushy when reheating. I would suggest a lasagna or soup! I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
I made this recipe a few nights ago for a friend and I, and it was INSANELY good!! The chicken turned out so juicy and the orzo was covered in that delicious sauce. Amazing!!
Thank you so much Jordan! xTieghan
I have some the julienne cut sun-dried tomatoes – i.e. not in oil – that I’d like to use up. Should I make any changes or rehydrate them to use in this recipe?
Hey Ruth,
Those should be fine to use as is. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
I’ve made this recipe twice now and it’s a huge family hit! Both times I’ve made it though I lose the creaminess after baking in the oven. There seems to be hardly any sauce left and it’s oily instead of creamy like in your photos. Any thoughts on what I’m doing wrong? Maybe the oven temp is too high or I’m baking for too long? Thanks for your help and all the awesome recipes!
Hey Olivia,
So sorry you are having issues with the creaminess. Are you adjusting the recipe at all? If you feel like it is over-baking, try reducing the baking time next round. Please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
SO good!! I’m making this weekly it’s so good! I had a question about the replacement of heavy whipping cream! I’ve read the comments about coconut milk can – does that change the flavor? I’m new to the whole sub dairy thing, but needing to. Is the coconut flavor very strong? I’m nervous to try if it is!
Hey Erika,
I am so glad you have been enjoying this recipe! Honestly with all of the other flavors you really cannot taste the coconut:) Let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
Delicious! One tip – use half the juice of a lemon versus whole. We served with warm homemade breadsticks. It was a hit and easy!
Ooo yum!! I am so happy this recipe turned out so well for you, Katherine! xTieghan
So so good. Incredible flavor. MINIMAL CLEAN UP. The mustard and the tomatoes just shine in this. Mine wasn’t as beautiful as these photos but what else is new. I can’t wait to make again
Thank you so much Margaret! I am really glad this recipe turned out so well for you! xTieghan
Hi, this looks amazing! Could this recipe be made in advance and kept warm in the oven or would it dry out too much with the orzo?
Hey Desiree,
Unfortunately this isn’t a recipe that I would recommend making in advance. You could assemble in advance, but I would bake when you are ready to eat. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
my all time favorite HBH recipe- have made many times and shared recipe with family/friends. love!!
Thank you Shannon! xTieghan
Can I transfer this into a deep 9 x 13 baking pan if I don’t have a iron skillet or Dutch oven?
Hey Steph,
Yes that will absolutely work! I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
Hi! This dish looks amazing. Do you think I could substitute the heavy cream for half and half?
Hey Sarah,
Yes that will work! I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
Made this tonight after hearing non stop hype about it and it far exceeded my expectations! Used coconut milk and it was creamy and delish. Also quite easy to make. Obsessed!!!
Thank you so much Brittany! I am really glad this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
I am amazed that I have been able to make this recipe and have it come out so perfectly, Tieghan’s instructions just made it so easy to make a success of this recipe. Even cooking in the pan this looked like a professional chef was cooking! The only problem was that a lot of the Parmesan cheese stuck to the pan, so the second time I made it I added the cheese just before serving and stirred it gently into the orzo.
Wow so happy to hear how well this turned out for you, Colleen! Thank you for trying it! xTieghan
Wow!! I had everything I needed for this recipe except sun dried tomatoes (why can’t they be in the same place in every store???). Added mushrooms but otherwise followed the recipe exactly. Perfect! I live alone and cook on Sundays for at least three upcoming meals. This dish (I used a pound of bone-in chicken thighs) made 3.5 proportionately appropriate meals. Served with roasted carrots. Delish.
Hi Eed! I am so glad this recipe turned out so well for you! Thank you so much for trying it! xTieghan
I just made this, and it was excellent!!! So flavorful. I used low sodium chicken broth in place of water because I had some in the fridge. I also used half and half in place of heavy cream because I bought the wrong thing at the store. Everything about it was perfect, and I will definitely be making again.
Thank you so much Emily! xTieghan
This is one of my most favorite meals, I love all the flavor cozy notes
Thank you Natasha! xTieghan
Love this dish So creamy so easy with everything in one pan Another winner I always post the recipes I make on Facebook Lets just say your fan base is increasing Well deserved
Thank you so much Marie!! xTieghan
This was the most flavorful dish I’ve made in a long time! Followed the recipe exactly as written and it came out perfectly! My husband and I are looking forward to putting this into the rotation as a regular.
Thank you so much Christa! I am so happy this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
So delicious! Creamy comfort food. Love one skillet meals.
Thank you Sarah! xTieghan
This recipe has so much flavor!! Another keeper recipe. Sooo delicious!
Thank you so much Jessica! xTieghan
I’ve made this recipe twice already! It is delicious! if you love dijon I recommend adding more for that extra zing. I do not have a cast iron so I transferred my dish into a baking dish and it still came out perfectly.
I am really glad you have been loving this recipe, Victor! Thank you so much! xTieghan
Wonderful! Amazing flavor. This is a new go-to recipe in our house.
Love that! Thank you Katherine! xTieghan
This recipe was OMG delicious!! For the most part i had all the ingredients and it was easy to make! Another great recipe 🙂
Thank you so much Jessica! xTieghan
Hi! I made this last night and it was SOOO good! Thank you for such amazing recipes. I did sub the heavy cream with Oat Creamer (3/4 cup Oat creamer and 1/4 cup half and half) to lighten it up a bit. Still so very good. The one pan meals are the best. Keep posting them!
I am really glad this turned out so well for you, Jen! Thank you so much for trying this one! xTieghan
What size cast iron would you recommend using?
I have a 10″ enamel cast iron skillet…
Hey Alissa,
That will be great to use! I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
Love this recipe. Made for my family last month and I’m going to make tonight.. Question. Can it be made ahead of time? I think with the cream it might be a little difficult. Any suggestions?
Thank You,
Patti
Hey Kathleen,
I am so glad you enjoyed the recipe! Honestly I would not recommend making this ahead:) Please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
I made this last night for my husband and a guest. Everyone devoured it. It was easy to make and loaded with flavour. We will for sure have it again soon. Thanks for another terrific recipe!
Love that! I am really glad this turned out so well for you, Lauren! Thank you so much! xTieghan
I have never, ever reviewed a recipe which is crazy for the amount of cooking and baking that I do, but this one….oh, this one needs to be shouted from the rooftops. It is quite simply, delicious. It has been making the rounds on Montreal mom groups for a reason – its simple, easy to find /easy to make ingredients come together so beautifully…the prep time is minimal, the cost of the ingredients is minimal…and the taste is out of this world! I can’t say enough good things about it!
My friend made this first and suggest some minor tweaks and so I will pass hers and mine on:
– Double the amount of spices and add about 1 tsp of garlic powder…this is just something I like do for all recipes as I like my chicken super well seasoned
– 1 cup of heavy cream is a lot…I mixed 1/2 cup water with 1/2 cream and it was still super creamy
THERE IS NOT ENOUGH DELICIOUS ORZO! The next time I make this I will double the amount of Orzo and everything that comes with it.
Thank you so much for this amazing recipe! I can’t wait to make it again.
Wow thank you SO so much, Wendy! I am really glad this recipe turned out so well for you!! I hope you continue to enjoy all of the recipes you try! xTieghan
This meal is by far one of my favorites. It’s so creamy and the sun-dried tomatoes add so much flavor. So, so good.
Thank you so much Samantha! xTieghan
This is another fab chicken recipe (keep them coming!). I made this last week, and it was delicious.
I used bone-in thigh fillets with skin on, my choice for most dishes. Unfortunately, orzo was impossible to find, even in well-assorted Norwegian stores. I used risotto instead, still a great option.
I was generous with all the spices and the (dry) white wine in the risotto. And don’t skip the rosemary and lemon juice before serving!
Thank you so much Henny! I am really glad this recipe turned out so well for you! xTieghan
I made this last night and we loved it! The recipe is very straightforward and the results were delicious. Perfect for a busy weeknight but definitely “fancy” enough for company(but who has them anymore???)!!
Thank you Susan! xTieghan
Great dish! The orzo comes out perfectly cooked. I love the lemon juice at the end. Adds so much flavor!
Thank you so much Betsy! xTieghan
Could you use quinoa, barley or couscous to replace the orzo?
Hey there,
I would use couscous! I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions. Happy Holidays! xTieghan
Your food blog and recipes are hands down, my FAVORITE! I’ve yet to make anything you’ve posted, that wasn’t amazingly delicious without being too time consuming! I made this chicken orzo skillet dig last night and it will be a new household favorite for a long time! I added mushrooms (same time as the sundrieds) and used bone in quarters instead of breast’s (as that’s what I had). Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! You are my go to foodie!
