Garlic Naan Grilled Cheese.
Sharing a fun twist on everyone’s favorite cheesy sandwich, with this Garlic Naan Grilled Cheese. Homemade naan bread, garlic butter, fresh herbs, and cheddar cheese are all cooked together to create a simple, but delicious grilled cheese sandwich. It’s garlicky and buttery on the outside, full of cheesy goodness inside, and takes just 15 minutes to make. This twist on the classic is truly SO delish. Best enjoyed with your favorite bowl of tomato soup, or simply eat as is. Great for lunch…or dinner…any day of the week!
You guys remember last week’s garlic herb butter naan? You do, right?
Well, I turned that naan into a very simple grilled cheese, and well, I am very into it. This may just be one of my simplest recipes yet, but when I thought it up last week while hiking, I knew I had to make it. Sure, someone out there in the world has probably already made a grilled cheese using naan bread, but I personally have not. So I checked that off my list, and am now sharing the idea with all of you.
Also, I might have a slight addiction to naan. I’ve been incorporating it into so many recipes the last few weeks. It’s currently my favorite bread recipe…for sure.
With life being as busy as it’s been the past few months, I’m on the lookout for delicious easy recipes. Sometimes that means big salads, instant pot pastas, and sheet pan dinners. Other times it’s just a good ole grilled cheese. Preferably with some tomato soup, but honestly soup or no soup, grilled cheese is always the best.
Especially when made with naan. Which really just feels like a fun, garlicky, herby twist on a childhood favorite.
Here are the details.
Find yourself some naan bread. This is obviously my favorite recipe, but store-bought naan works great too.
Now, mix together a little garlic herb butter with fresh garlic and fresh herbs. Spread the butter on one side of the naan and top with cheese on the other. I used a mix of sharp cheddar and buttery Havarti, but you can really use whatever cheese you love most. Anything works as long as it’s a melting cheese.
Heat your skillet, pan cook the naan until the cheese inside has melted, and the outside is golden and slightly crisp. As the cheese melts on the inside, the garlic on the outside slowly begins to caramelize. The butter turns toasty, and the herbs fry in the butter.
I always finish my grilled cheese sandwiches with a drizzle of honey and a pinch of flaky sea salt. It’s my little trick that makes a grilled cheese better than any other you’ve had before. Trust me, the honey + sea salt is a MUST (it’s honestly beyond words how good it is).
As I mentioned yesterday, the whole reason for the creamy Moroccan tomato soup was because of this naan grilled cheese. But soup or no soup, this grilled cheese is going to be amazing!
If you’re looking for some greens, I recommend a very simple side salad. Arugula or kale with fresh lemon would be delicious. Something like this lemony arugula.
The best part? If you have naan and cheese on hand, this can be made in 15 minutes or less. Just 15 minutes!! I mean, it does not get better.
Bottom line here? If you have not yet made this naan, make it soon. Then make this grilled cheese with the leftovers. It’s truly heaven on Earth. Dramatic? Yes, very, but so true.
If you make this garlic naan grilled cheese, be sure to leave a comment and/or give this recipe a rating! Above all, I love to hear from you guys and always do my best to respond to each and every comment. And of course, if you do make this recipe, don’t forget to also tag me on Instagram! Garlic Naan Grilled Cheese.
Homemade naan bread, garlic butter, fresh herbs, and cheddar cheese are all cooked together to create a simple, but delicious grilled cheese sandwich. It's garlicky and buttery on the outside, full of cheesy goodness inside, and takes just 15 mins to make.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons salted butter, at room temperature
- 1 clove garlic, grated
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh herbs - such as parsley, cilantro, chives, and/or dill
- 2 pieces naan, homemade or store-bought
- 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup shredded havarti or fontina cheese
- honey, for serving
- crushed red pepper, flakes for serving
Instructions
-
1. In a small bowl, mix together the butter, garlic, and herbs,
2. Spread one side of each piece of naan with garlic butter. Flip the naan over and layer the cheese on one half of the naan. Fold the other half of the naan over the cheese (like a taco). Repeat with the second piece of naan.
3. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Place the naan (the buttered sides should be on the outside), one at a time, in the skillet and cook until golden on each side, about 3-4 minutes per side. Serve topped with honey, chili flakes, and sea salt, if desired. Enjoy!

I made your naan bread the other day and really, the recipe is one of the best doughs I have ever used. Loved it as the herby, buttery, garlicky naan, but used the leftover dough as pizza dough the next day. Wow. The best pizza ever!
Thank you!
Thank you so much Virginia! xTieghan
Naan and cheesy cheese … it just doesn’t get any better than that!! And what a GREAT idea to drizzle some honey on the sandwich at the end. I have never thought of a grilled cheese naan … but now it is gonna be a must for me. You always have the most interesting take on recipes. Thanks for sharing.

This looks delicious and so different! Can’t wait to make it. May I ask what knife that is that is in the pictures? I’ve been wanting to purchase a great knife like that but not sure where to find one. Thanks! Lisa
Hey Lisa! That is actually a vintage knife so I do not have a source. That said, I love Zwilling knives. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you! xTieghan

Thank you Laura! xTieghan

The honey MADE it!
Thank you Ginger! xTieghan
I just made this and the creamy Moroccan tomato soup- sooooo good. I left the harissa out of the soup because I don’t like heat but it was all fab! I can’t wait to have leftovers tomorrow. Thanks you for these simple and fast recipes.
Thank you so much Kristen! I am so glad you loved this! xTieghan
I was lazy and used store bought naan but this was still incredible. The honey drizzle at the end is a must. I was skeptical but the slight touch of sweetness that it adds brings this dish up to a whole other level. The heat from the red pepper was the perfect finishing touch. Easy to make and sooo satisfying!!!
So glad you enjoyed this Marissa! xTieghan
This was great and a nice twist on grilled cheese/quesadillas! Was very happy to find this recipe as I had nothing planned for dinner but had all of these ingredients. Thanks for the recipe!

My husband said it best “flavor just exploded in my mouth” just a beautiful combination of salty sweet and savory! I don’t know if I’ll be able to do regular grilled cheese again. So so good!
Wow that is so amazing! Thank you so much Ashley! I am so glad you loved this! xTieghan
Sorry, I am not clear on the recipe instructions and I am also confused by the photo. If there are only 2 naan (naans?), and each is folded over, why do they have to be cooked one at a time? It seems like there should be enough room in a large skillet for both. Then you don’t have two people’s sandwich cooling down while you are cooking the other sandwich. Also, the recipe serves four, yet the sandwich pictured is cut into thirds. So the two sandwiches together would be cut into a total of six pieces. That doesn’t serve four evenly. I’m picturing everyone eating one piece, then they have to arm wrestle to see which two diners get a second piece. 🙂 It seems like each sandwich should be cut in half, not thirds. Or if you want to be fancier, cut each sandwich into fourths so each person gets two smaller pieces instead of one bigger piece, which makes the sandwich a little easier to eat gracefully.
Hi Marcia! The pieces of naan are quite large, so one only fits on the skillet at a time.. Also, it serves four, but feel free to cut it however you would like to to serve! Please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
I took the first bite and literally said out loud, “Oh wow!” It’s taking all my self-control to not eat another one immediately!
Haha I am glad you are loving this, Coby! Thank you! xTieghan
This was amazing!!! One of the best grilled cheeses I’ve ever had!
So amazing to hear! Thank you Grace! xTieghan
Don’t worry about the ambiguous future, just work hard for the sake of clarity
Thanks! xTieghan
I must be daft! How can one confused over such simple instructions? If the naan is folded over like
a taco why does it resemble a cheese pizza in the photo? Does it get unfolded at the end? And why does it have those yummy char marks on it like it was under a broiler? Please help cause I NEED to make this!
Hi Patti,
If you follow the recipe as is and the photos, I promise it will come out looking like them. The char marks are from the skillet, this is what your naan should look like. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
Ok I so want to make this but can’t figure it out. This doesn’t look folded at all. Stupid me needs a video on how to make a simple naan grilled cheese 🤦♀️
Hey Patrice,
This is a very similar fold to a taco, simply fold the naan over once:) I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
AMAZING! Followed this to the T and it was heaven! Never thought of sea salt and honey on a grilled cheese but GAMECHANGER status right now! My husband and I devoured it and made it for lunch a second day in a row! Thank you for your recipe and I cannot wait to try more of your recipes!
To anyone reading this…TRY THIS GRILLED CHEESE NOW!!! its NAAN-negotiable..lol 🙂
Hi Melissa! I am so happy this recipe turned out so well for you! Thank you for trying it and for the cute pun! xTieghan
This naan garlic butter bread grilled cheese recipe is the best! I used fresh chopped cilantro I got with my tacos from the Cuban drive thru last night, bakery fresh naan bread from Kroger, shredded sharp cheddar cheese, added some slices of honey ham, butter garlic, and of course the honey & sea salt at the end! Omg, seriously deliciousness!! Thank you for the amazing recipe!
I am so happy to hear that, Christine!! Thank you for trying this one! xTieghan
This is so flavorful and delicious, plus easy to make! I added some bacon bits and it was the perfect brunch meal. Thank you for another great recipe 🙂
Hey Brittany,
Thanks so much for giving the recipe a try, I am thrilled that it worked out for you! Happy Holidays! xTieghan
Is there a way to store dough so you can make one fresh every day? I love alone and love using your recipes for meal prepping and I think it would be so delish if I could make a fresh naan every day that I need one for a recipe without having to whip up the dough every time… is it possible to freeze the dough?
Hey Merrill,
You can absolutely freeze the dough! I hope you love the recipe:) xTieghan
I need your naan recipe!
Hey Julie,

I was wondering what is the cubed cheese? In the recipe it says shredded for both. Also what herbs did you use in the video on Instagram? And lastly where can I find your Naan recipe? Thanks so much!
Hey Emily,
You can use all shredded or cubed cheese, honestly whatever cheeses you enjoy will work here! The naan recipe is listed above with this recipe:) I hope you love it! xTieghan
Wow this was so good. The honey drizzle and fresh parsley MAKES it. Love this. New fav,
Hey Kayla,
I am so glad this recipe was enjoyed, thanks so much for giving it a try! Have the best week. xTieghan
OMG these flavors are incredible. I saw your video of this posted on IG the other day and knew I needed this! Since I didn’t have ingredients to make naan and was unable to go the store I improvised and used a large burrito style tortilla. The garlicky herb butter along with the honey drizzle and sea salt at the end really make this!
Hey Nicole,
I am so glad the recipe was enjoyed, thanks for making it! Have a great week:) xTieghan
Hiya, unfortunately I don’t have a dough hook or a big mixer. Can you mix by hand? Can’t wait to try and make this! X
Hi Nina,
Yes, you can mix with a wooden spoon and knead by hand. I hope you love the recipe. Let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
Saw this on Instagram and made it the next day. My 11-year old daughter who loves baking cannot stop raving about this. She said “I never thought naan, cheddar cheese and honey would taste so good together?!?!” We were oooh-Ing and ahh-Ing the whole time we ate it. Can’t wait to make another! Lol. Thanks for this recipe!
Hey Sarah,
Thanks a lot for giving the recipe a go, I am so delighted that it was enjoyed! Have a great week:) xTieghan
Delicious! The garlic + honey really hits the spot! I think my heat was too high though, I only ended cooking for maybe 2 mins each side so make sure you check the color so it doesn’t burn. I think next time I will just use two circle naan pieces and stack them on each other, instead of folding each one in half 🙂 Thank you for the recipe – Will be making again soon!
Hey Anh,
I am so glad the recipe was enjoyed, thanks so much for giving it a try! xTieghan
Grilled cheese just took on a NEW MEANING and I used my leftover HBH naan bread from the day before!!
The honey and sprinkle of sea salt was the cherry on top🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Hey Ingrid,
I am so thrilled this recipe was a hit, thanks a lot for giving it a try!! xTieghan
