Crockpot Philly Cheesesteaks.
You know, I’ve never been to Philadelphia. But you guys have to try these Crockpot Philly Cheesesteaks.

I hear it’s a pretty cool city. I know they are famous for their cheesesteaks, which I also hear they load to the top with cheese. We all know I like cheese… A LOT.
Since I can’t really pick up and fly myself to Philly to give one a try, I figured I would make my own. I also figured that this week would be as good a time as any to share this easy recipe with you. I mean, hello… talk about the ultimate Super Bowl sandwich. Speaking of which, are you ready for all the game day eats this week?? It’s going to be SO good, and these cheesesteaks are only the start.
Whoop, whoop!!
But first, we really need to chat about something that seriously excites me.
Did you guys see that Netflix confirmed the Gilmore Girls revival series?
I mean, I mean!!
I honestly cannot contain my excitement! No seriously, like I can’t. I know it’s totally lame to admit, but you guys, Gilmore Girls saved my life growing up. OKAY, that’s totally dramatic, but really, I lived for Tuesday nights! They were my escape from school, family and general pre-teen/teenage drama. And I cannot believe I am admitting this, but when I am having a bad day or I just need something that makes me feel all cozy, I will totally put Gilmore Girls on. Legit truth.
Want to know something funny? My dad cringes at this show. He sat through SEVEN years of me ritually watching this show every Tuesday night and hated every minute of it. He thinks they talk too fast or something, and he finds Lorelai 100% annoying. BUT, I could care less and the good news for him is that I don’t live at home anymore! However, he has been listening to me talk about this revival show for the last two nights during our massive “clean up” sessions. It’s safe to say he thinks I am legit insane… yep outta my mind.
But umm, Rory is coming back! YESS. SO PUMPED!
Oh MY GOSH, I just had the BEST idea. I think I need to do a week of Gilmore Girls themed recipes. Like homemade poptarts, coffee, coffee, coffee and pizza. Yup, totally happening.
Again, so pumped.
Ok, but on to today’s Crockpot Philly Cheesesteaks.
I’m kind of thinking cheesesteaks are something everybody needs to give a try at least once in their lifetime. Even if you’re vegetarian or vegan (have you guys seen the lentil and mushroom cheesesteaks?? YUM), at some point you gotta try (some form of) a cheesesteak, you know? It’s just a classic sandwich that you cannot go wrong with… saucy steak (or mushrooms/lentils), cheese and bread – you just can’t.
When I was thinking up Super Bowl recipes for this year, I had kind of a big list. So I did what I do when I can’t decide on which recipes to choose, I sent my list off to my cousin. She then chose her top five picks from the list and one of those picks were these cheesesteaks (yes, you will see the other four in the next four days!). I gotta say, I’m pretty happy she went with the cheesesteak. Sometimes you just need an easy recipe for a classic… and um, trust me these are SO easy, and SO delicious.
When I made these last week, I had to send a snapchat to my oldest brother Creighton who lives back in Cleveland. Rarely do I make food that Creigh thinks looks delicious, but I knew he would be drooling over these sandwiches. I almost felt bad torturing him with these photos… but then I didn’t, because I am his sister, and I can’t lie torturing him is kind of fun…wahahaha. Plus, he should probably get his butt outta Ohio and over to Colorado anyway. It’s time he joins the rest of the fam. Okay, and I really need another person to down all this food I’ve been making these days. With Kai away at school and Red always traveling (wait a min, I take that back Red eats next to nothing!) there’s kind of been A LOT of extra food. Seems like it’s feast or famine lately!
Anyway, the point is, I made “guy” food… and I made it so yummy!
Here’s the deal. Just throw all the ingredients into your crockpot and let them slow cook all day long. So super simple. When you’re ready to eat, just preheat your oven, stuff the saucy steak into a soft hoagie roll and LOAD it up with all the provolone cheese you can get your hands on. That’s it, then just wrap the sammie in foil and place it in the oven to let the cheese get all warm and melty.
You need to make sure you wrap these sandwiches in foil. The key is to melt the cheese while keeping the bread super soft and moist, so foil is KEY. Of course if you prefer crispy bread, then by all means, skip the foil, but I’m going to be honest, for this sandwich you don’t want crispy bread, soft is best here.
And then of course, fries are HIGHLY recommended as well. For me… and for my family, fries are a MUST, ketchup too.
OH and lastly, I topped my cheesesteaks with honeyed jalapenos. May sound a little odd, but if you like spicy, it is so GOOD!

Game day eats for the win.
P.S. what do you guys think of my Gilmore Girl inspired recipes idea?? Any suggestions or must makes??!?!? Tell me, tell me! 🙂
oh! yes please! A week of Gilmore Girls recipes! I know what you mean about Gilmore Girls being a really important element of teenage life! And my mother really didn’t like it either (something about it not being realistic parenting 😉 ) Looking forward to the recipes!
This looks great – I love using my slow cooker, but we have a puppy now and when I go out in the mornings, it feels a bit mean to leave a hunk of meat cooking in the same room as him 🙂
I need to move my slow cooker and put it in a different room to him because this steak looks lovely and I want to make it!
That puppy comment just made me laugh outloud. Except in my brain, I substituted husband and got the sam affect. And I don’t even need to say how mouth watering good this looks! Just everything. Oh yum!
My boyfriend is the same, he always comes to ‘check’ or ‘stir the pot’ when something is cooking, which generally means to eat half of it! 🙂
This is the BEST idea! We literally got a crockpot last week. And those honeyed jalapenos are so original!
You totally crushed it with these, Girl! So incredibly craving one right now!
SLOW COOKER! YES! Okay, seriously though, your pictures couldn’t be any more PERFECT! And this meal…. WOW! This meal looks dreamy and so so so mouthwatering 🙂 I would say you nailed this one… completely!
So excited to make this for dinner tomorrow! When do we add the soy sauce? It’s listed in the ingredients but not in the directions. Thanks!
THANK YOU! Sorry about the soy sauce, fixing the recipe now. You add it with the broth.
Okay Tieghan, you’ve got an open invite to Philly any time you want! And after Philly you can make a pit stop at the Jersey Shore! There is just something special about Philly cheesesteaks for sure! You’re right, everyone needs to try one! But once you try one you’ll be hooked! Yours sounds totally perfect for the Super Bowl, and in a slow cooker to make it way easy is just perfect!
So this post totally made my day! First…I just finished rewatching the entire series of the Gilmore Girls and loved every single minute of it! Just the rumor that they might be bringing it back sent me into binge watching mode….then, when I finished it…I was looking to see if they confirmed the Netflix deal…and sadly no confirmation…so I moved on…until TODAY!!! Thanks for the newsflash! Woohoo!
And second, living in Philly, a good cheesesteak is always appreciated! Oh and don’t even get me started on who has the best one…:)
After visiting Mary Ann you can swing up to Northwest New Jersey for a visit as well-maybe during your east coast book tour?! I grew up outside of Philadelphia and I need to eat a cheesesteak whenever I go back home. We are headed to Reading Terminal Market next weekend and besides all the other food we will consume cheesesteaks are definitely at the top of our list. Looking at your photos definitely has me chomping at the bit. I may have to make this recipe to get me through the week!
These look like the perfect Super Bowl food! So warm, cozy and cheesy 🙂 Also, I am SO excited that Gilmore Girls is coming back. I was just as obsessed as you were and I still watch them on Netflix all the time. I mean how can you not? Just so great!
Having grown up in Philadelphia and lived in the area until this past summer, I’m always skeptical when people from outside the area attempt to make a cheesesteak but your recipe looks pretty spot on. I’m a purist and just like the meat, onions, and cheese but I know some people like sweet peppers on their steaks. And thank goodness you used provolone instead of cheddar or some other delicious but inappropriate on a steak sandwich cheese. 😉
If you ever get the chance to go to Philadelphia, you must go hungry and thirty. There are so many great restaurants and micro-breweries and beer gardens.
Hi! Would this work with chicken? Chicken cheesesteaks from Philly are even better
HI! Chicken will be great! Thanks!
Yes to Gilmore Girl’s themed foods! Love that idea! My daughter says she and I are the real life Gilmore Girls – but that’s up for debate 🙂
BTW – these are mouthwatering – think I could devour those honey jalapenos alone and be happy!
Now you have my attention! But I was wondering, what is the purpose of the Brown sugar in the recipe? Just wondering?
HI! It helps caramelize the onions and adds nice flavors. Let me know if you have questions. THANK YOU!
What’s with the Cilantro and mayo? You put ketchup on a cheese steak, not mayo
This looks delicious and your Gilmore Girls idea sounds amazing! Ive got two questions, one – do you have a recipe you used for those fries cause they look amazing! And two: pickles are new to me… but I would love to buy some – do you have a brand you can recommend to try?
I am so excited this recipe popped up today! Will definitely be making this for the super bowl. Can you share your French fries recipe? Thank you!!
My favorite part of these is that they can be prepared in the crockpot! I love make ahead food!

Still looking and Drooling over THIS! It’s a must on a game day!!!!
I’m fascinated by the honeyed jalapeños. Can you tell me how you make them? Just toss them in a saucepan together?
HI! Yes, I do 1/4 cup honey to one jalapeno. Thank you!
Jesus. You know how when you meet someone at a party and they just start talking and they keep talking and talking and talking and never really say anything but they keep babbling incoherently without taking a breath and you want to scream STOP! JUST STOP! IF YOU HAVE A POINT THEN GET TO IT BUT OTHERWISE JUST STOP!
Yeah.
And by the way, it’s *couldn’t* care less, Worcestershire, and garlic *powder*. Not to mention “next,” “sliced” and “gets.”
They’ll let anyone on the Interwebs.
If you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say it all…Thanks for reading! 🙂
I’m not easily impsesred but you’ve done it with that posting.
Wow, sorry you have to deal with rude people. I love your recipes and your cookbook. Keep up the good work, girl!
Thank you Cassie!
I’m from Philly and this sounds pretty darn good!! I like provolone cheese but you can also use Cheese Wiz, that’s what Jim’s Steaks on South Street uses and that’s the first cheesesteak I ever had.
This looks and sounds amazing! I’m definitely saving this to make soon. I’d love to meal prep this to have for lunches! Thanks for sharing such a delicious crockpot recipe!
Thank you so much, Chelsea!
Ohh, these sound so delicious. Perfect for days that are still cold.
Also, I am right with you there with the Gilmore Girls love. It has been my coping mechanism for many a trying day. There are some episodes I have watched far, far too many times. The Reigning Lorelai? Yup, love off-the-rails Emily. Gilmore Girls inspired recipes would make me soooooo happy. 🙂
hehe! SO excited we feel the same about Gilmore Girls! Thank you! 🙂
Perfect excuse to bust out the slow cooker!
Thanks Matt! Hope you are having a great week!
I enjoy far too few cheesesteaks. We have our annual one at the MN State Fair, and maybe make them once a year at home. So good. LOVE your chipotle tahini mayo addition!!
THANK YOU! I bet those cheesesteaks are KILLER! 🙂
I’m not sure I’ve ever commented but I’ve been reading for a while. I would love some Gilmore Girls inspired recipes. Love, LOVE that show!
hehe! THANK YOU! 🙂 Already planning it!
Absolutely love your blog Tieghan I even got my sister hooked as well! Made these yesterday! Probably the 15th recipe of yours I have made all of them have come out perfect with raging compliments from my guests! This one was of course a huge hit as well!
YEAHHHHH! This is so awesome, THANK YOU! 🙂
I totally think you should do some “diner” inspired meals, referring to Luke’s Diner 🙂 That’d be awesome. I actually named my son Luke because I loved that name so much partially thanks to GG 🙂 Love that show, and I love Philly cheesesteak sandwiches, so I’m going to make this recipe next weekend. I’m excited!
I made these tonight to have for lunches this week! Oh my goodness girlie… you nailed this recipe! My house smells amazing and I CANNOT wait to have this for lunch this week. Thanks for such a wonderful recipe! I shared your recipe on my blog tonight and I’d love for you to check it out. Wishing you all the best :).
Oh my gosh!! Thank you! I will check it out!!
Any thoughts on freezing the sandwiches in the foil and then cooking them in the oven later? How long would they need to be in the oven for and at what temp?
HI! I think freezing would be great. I would say 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes in the foil and then maybe 5 minutes out of foil to help them crisp. Let me know if you have any other questions. Hope you love these! THANKS!
I made these a couple nights ago finally! I wanted to make them a month ago but never got around to it! Super tasty! My husband and I loved them! I made the recipe exactly as written, but I never ended up adding that extra 1/2 cup beef broth because there was already plenty of liquid. Will make again. Thanks!
Awesome i’m so happy they were good!!
Proofread!!
Good morning! We’re making these tomorrow, but prepping this morning. Do we cut the steak up first, or just put the whole steaks in the crock pot and cut after they’ve cooked?
Hi Allison! Cut the steak before cooking, just make sure to thinly slice it. Let me know if you have questions. Thanks!
Love the site– extremely individual pleasant and lots to see!
Thanks!
You can order REAL PHILLY CHEESESTEAKS delivered right to your home by Philly Food. Two versions are precooked to heat ‘n eat or raw for your to cook.
Sounds awesome!
Take it from a Philly boy. This is nothing more than a recipe for hot roast beef sandwiches.
Thanks Philly boy.
The hardest part of a cheesesteak is taking the time for the fried onions. Good to see someone is smart enough to use real beef sliced thin instead of that frozen junk. Once the onions are done. Your cheese steak can be ready in under 3 minutes. Crockpot? that’s just plain crazy!
Glad they turned out great for you! Thanks!
Gilmore girls recipes sounds so fun! I will have to watch it! I was just going to say that here in Dallas, Texas we eat our Philly Cheesesteaks with tortilla chips and ranch or queso. Thought you might like that since you like jalapeños.??????(those are pics of you the artist chef)?(and that’s me Cowgirl Smileyface).
Thank you Lisa!
I have heard of round steak and sirloin steak, but not round sirloin steak. Is that a typo, or do I need to ask my butcher for round sirloin?
I can’t find anything called “round sirloin” steak. Is it the same as top round? Or top sirloin?
Thanks!
HI! You can use top round, top sirloin or ribeye steaks (which are especially great with this recipe)! Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe. Thanks so much!! xTieghan
I have made these in the crockpot a few times now and although they are totally delicious, it always ends up making the bread soggy when it comes out of the oven. Is there a secret to draining the meat from the crockpot? I usually just use a slotted spoon.
Hey Kate! Try pulling the meat out of the crockpot with kitchen tongs and letting the excess liquid drip off. Also, what kind of bread are you using? If you use a dryer, firmer bread they will not be soggy. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I am so glad you love this recipe! Thank you! xTieghan
If I don’t have a meat slicer can I cook the steak longer in a crockpot so it can be so moist you can shred it?
HI! No need to cook longer, the steak will already be falling apart. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you! xTieghan
Great recipe, ty! I made these for my husband last night. He absolutely loved it. This is a keeper recipe. Had to share that my picky eater wants me to make these for his lunch more often. ?.
Awh that is amazing! Thank you for trying this Bobbi! xTieghan
Made these for our super bowl party last night and it was DELICIOUS! Such a huge hit! Good thing I tripled the recipe! 🙂
Haha yes! So glad you all enjoyed this recipe Marcy! xTieghan
Delicious recipe ..like all your others! but it’s Worcestershire sauce…a county in the UK, where I live……
Thank you so much Camilla! My bad on the spelling, its never been my strong suit.. Really sorry if it was offensive toward you! xTieghan
Any recommendations on making this in an Instant Pot? (Sorry if this was previously addressed in the comments and I just overlooked it)
Hi Erica,
I would sauté all the veggies in the IP first and then cook on high for 10 minutes. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
[email protected]
I made this before a few weeks ago, and I’m STILL thinking about it. It was perfection. I have to make it again tonight for some friends. I’ve been waiting for an excuse to make it again! Such a punch of flavor!
Thank you so much Kate!! I am really glad this turned out so well for you! xTieghan
Would this work with Chipped steak from the butcher?
Hey Jasmine,
Yes that would work. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
I love all of your recipes and have loved every one so far. This one disappointed me a little. Philly cheese steaks are comprised of carmelized onions, cooked steak, with sides of mushrooms and peppers. The results I had were more like a peppered steak or a pot roast. It was delicious, don’t get me wrong, but just not what I had hoped. Next time I will try your alternate method of pan cooking and not adding the beef broth.
I am always telling people about your great recipes! I really am just sharing my preference and results.
Keep creating!
Hey Suzan,
Thanks for giving the recipe a try, so sorry you did not enjoy this one, please let me know if I can help in anyway! xTieghan
